From VCR box: "From Honus Wagner to Pie Traynor to Roberto Clemente, from Exposition Park to Three Rivers Stadium, the Pirates have filled a century with heroes and heartbreaks. Just as the city of Pittsburgh has seen good times and bad times over the last 100 years, so too have the Pirates. This is the story of the Battlin' Bucs, a vivid account of dramatic moments and revealing interviews that recapture all the memorable names and games of 100 Pirate seasons."

to me, the greatest Pittsburgh Pirates Season was 1909 because of Honus Wagner, and they win 110 games that season and won the World Series. Great Video.

You can't forget Chief Wilson, who still holds the record of 36 triples in a season & Tommy Leach was very underrated, then of course Player-Manager Fred Clarke. Their pitching was also dynamite with Vic Willis, Howie Camnitz, Deacon Phillippe (his grandson is an actor, Ryan IIRC) and the young phenom Babe Adams who won 3 games in that World Series. A great team who beat the powerhouse Cubs and Giants this year.
@SarahWestTheAmericanTailQueen
@@TheImapotato yep, without them, the Detroit Tigers would have won their first series in 1909 instead of 1935

This is amazing. It's sometimes hard to remember our legacy in the modern era. Nutting hates the team and its painful. That being said - our history is impressive and one of the coolest in the league.

The Pirates are very underrated as a historical franchise. Honus Wagner, Clemente, Stargell, Blyleven, etc...5 World Series Titles, retained the same name since 1891.

I think what's hurt the history of the Pirates is what they've done in the last 30 years. Penny-pinching ownership, poor drafting and player development, and being content with mediocrity. The fans deserve better than what ownership and management have put out on the field.

1) 1903 wasn't the only 9 game World Series. 1919-1921 were also 9 game Series. 2) They should have mentioned Roberto earlier than they did! Drafting him from the Dodgers in 1954 was one of the best things that ever happened to the franchise! Still, on the whole, I enjoyed this documentary. I would have liked to see them keep Syd Thrift longer than they did. Yeah there are finances to contend with, but the early 90's Bucs could really have been great. As it was, they were good, but losing the NLCS 3 times in a row and then going into oblivion was really frustrating.

Think of how many home runs Kiner would have hit ef he hadn't played in the longest outfield in baseball.
@TheImapotato

It was pulled back in to 335 feet for Hank Greenberg in LF in about 1947, Kiner came later and took advantage, so he had the same distance as most RH sluggers. It was called Greenberg Gardens then Kiner's Korner, after Kiner left they pushed it back to 365. The guy who got robbed was Willie Stargell, as soon as they moved to Three Rivers, he hit 31 and then 48! He could have hit 550 or 575 without that 375 and 408 in RF although the line was only 300. But then again without that large OF we would never have the great Roberto Clemente.

The 1970’s was most definitely The Pirates Greatest Time of Their Franchise. It was just too bad that The 1970’s Decade was pretty much dominanted by “The Big Red Machine”(Cincinnati Reds) as they defeated the Pirates 3 Times in the NLCS(1970, 1972 and 1975), but the Pirates got them back in 1979 en route to Their Last World Series Championship. Since 1979 the Pittsburgh Pirates haven’t had A Sniff of the World Series, with the exception of 1991 and 1992 when they lost to Atlanta in 7 Games Both of those Seasons.

The Pirates made a crucial error I always thought by not putting Owner Barney Dreyfuss (1865-1932) in their first inaugural HOF class in 2022. They made a point of having all the Pirate HOFers (incl NL Crawfords & Grays) in that class. Barney Dreyfuss albeit long overdo was finally elected to the Baseball Hall Of Fame in 2008. They didn't rectify that slight last year either. He belongs there. No Barney Dreyfuss = no Pirate team history at all.

You can actually hear the producers of this say when they couldn't get around Clemente: "...just do not call them african american, call them latin!" Yes, this here documentary is pretty dated, but you US americans are still the same or maybe worse on dealing with your history. When will you finally accept that those products of slaveship are the true foundation and soul defining your nation? There is so much to talk about, all bits and bytes in this world could not cover your issues. And if kneeling during your national anthem finally shakes your world, so be it!
