I’m not gonna lie, I disagree with you about the Sideline story. You make out to be a 4 bar loop but the piano pattern changes pretty regularly and the bass line is actually pretty dope (especially the bass like scaling down to the chorus) the drums have more to be desired but the overall beat for the song is what it needs
I understand this guy train of thought because Cole's overall production has gotten better & improved but the Sideline Story joint vs Hello is a weird comparison. Sideline Story is a much better song both lyrically & beat wise

I agree about his debut album being off the mark for him. But he found his footing on Born Sinner and completely put it together by FHD. That being said...Bruh, what??? Sideline Story was a perfect song and probably the best one on that album
Sideline story is by far my most favorite J Cole song. Simple beat maybe but his words give me chills til this day, and you can feel the emotion coming out of every word said. The talent this dude has is insane because listening to it I never really thought about how simple the beat is.
I feel like if you like Coles older ALBUMs you are also partly a fan of the generation it came in. That particular sound I personally loved Born sinner I feel like that one is where we could actually hear some of his greater qualities be show cased in the commercial realm
Cole has definitely improved a lot over the years. As far as production & rapping meshing together, The Off-Season is the perfect blend. He finally leaned into what made him popular in the first place with soul samples but also made sure to have the right trap drum grooves behind them to make his most accessible & fun listen yet
Good breakdown of J Cole's work. And yes, I agree about the last point, I had the same thing when I stopped worrying about what people would think about my music, I had a breakthrough, I started to create in the flow and a lot of new experimental ideas came to me🤗
That was my issue with his first 2 albums frfr. His production was pretty bland and safe. Especially coming from Friday Night Lights which is in his top 3 craziest projects imo. I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that

I know you’ve touched on it in other videos with songs like Pump It Up but I would love to see a video that goes more in depth on songs with odd time signatures like that. Or just unorthodox sample beats in general. And more Madlib/Alchemist stuff!
This is just confirmation bias. That sideline story beat sounds perfectly solid and there are plenty of beats that are way more simple and “straightforward” than that. Youve made beats that are just as simple as that😭 the bassline is pretty good too
I loved Born Sinner. That’s my favorite album from Cole. Not sure if you’d heard both Truly Yours EP’s, you should give them a listen. Along with tracks like the cure and grew up fast. All love
i feel like that first beat you made of his that you played on fl studio @1.55 was honestly dope af i wish you kept vibing with it and this video was about how nice that beat was. Love the content tho but that beat was remade really well. I wish i coule make a bassline that sounds like that!

I've been a fan of Cole's work since his earlier mixtape days (i.e Friday Night Lights). That said, I would be lying if I said he hasn't improved over time. He's gone from a promising up and coming artist with occasional misses to a solidified goat of his time in the span of a decade
I definitely think he got better over time. And I think that’s most of what you’re talking about in this video. It’s just overall progression on his part and subjectivity on the listener’s part.
A lot of story telling rappers like Cole, Eminem, Kendrick, etc use low key “boring beats” so you pay more attention to the lyrics and story rather than the beat. The opposite is true when you want to make a club record/radio hit. Banging beat with a catchy hook. It’s a choice and I think some do it intentionally
I heard work out recently and was legit shocked to learn it was a j cole song. Used to hear it on the radio all the time but I never would have made the connection knowing j now
~ Even tho, I can agree with most of the songs you mentioned, I can't agree with the beat of Sideline Story. He replayed the piano and used the guitar riff from a sample ( Rhythm - The World is a place) and yeah, the drums are pretty straight forward but it perfectly fits J.Cole's flow. My 2nd favorite song from him, the first is 4 your eyez only. But it's the beauty of making beats, we can't agree all the time as producers and I respect your opinion on the subject of this matter but still. Great beat imo ~ 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Honestly maybe it’s the nostalgia but his first two albums weren’t that bad to me. But dear god that 3rd one ? Yea 2014 forest hills drive is easily my favorite album of all time. Right next to graduation
Regardless how you see it, the entire objective of music is to make you feel something. Straight forward beats are literally the pinnacle of rap music, as the music is generally easily digested. What musician doesn't want the world to hear what they make? And when it comes to hello and sideline story, sideline story is the better song. At the end of the day vocals, soul and story make the music a package. Doesn't matter how complex or how simple.
Usually I would agree with what you say in the majority of your videos but as a massive Cole fan I think his early production matched his style pretty well although it obviously wasn't as good
Difference between him and other is he made it pretty much without jay cosigning on his songs like wayne did with drake for many records, he still made it through🔊🔊🔊
it really isn't so much the beat in the case of j cole as it is his chorus and verses that go along with it. the beat may give him an idea of what subject matter to write about but we also overlook intangible things such as the environment that he is in at the time of hearing that could have influenced him to take it a certain direction. As well as other collaborators on the musical ideas. Personally I think he has gotten better along with the production that goes into his music. I do know he produces quite a bit but he isn't the only one. A common theme in catchy music is having a team behind the creation as the catchier it is to 10 people the more chances it has to be well received versus just one person thinking its hot.
I dunno that first beat was like perfect imo , not too much & not too little. Just the right amount of everything. There could be some more unique sounds in it but it might change the entire feeling
so he went from solid nice sounding beats to .... eh....we used to chill at a friends place and while we smoke and drink he be on the headphones making beats on FL and then after a while he was done and he put it on speakers and it was the most dysphoric pots and pans shit ever.. and we just try to hold in our laugh cause he had passion. Maybe my friend was a visionary... or a J cole producer...
EH sideline story sounded better than hello. I get the comparison but it missed the mark because each had the opposite effect that you were trying to demonstrate. At least to me, the he landed correctly and was matched well with the conservative song and missed the mark ith the risky one but he was def mismatched and Workout and matched well witrh tale of two cities
cole's had good beats early on, it's a mixed bag though like any other artist. some songs work really well, others don't as much. but yeah, i don't listen to cole for the beats particularly, i listen to him because i like his raps, his writing, his technique. also, trying to find your way up in the industry is bound to come with some missteps and finding yourself. No sense in judging someone for the things they did along the way to get to where they wanted to be if their intentions were good.
I don't think every well produced album needs to bring something new to the table Illmatic by nas is a great example The sample are pretty straight forward looped and the drums are not very special but the production was made near to prefection.
Alright i agree, his beats are what make him boring. But this wasn't always the case. Imo his best produced and most intriguing album is Born Sinner. 4YEO was a major setback.
