My thoughts about the new mixes Andrew, i like the Red album mixes, well most of them anyway, the blue album a few on there are a bit......, i still prefer most of the mixes for "The Yellow Submarine Songtrack" over the 2023 mixes to be honest.
I own a first pressing Red & Blue album from 1973 on the green Apple 🍏 label .Unopened until this week. I opened both and played them on a turn table using a brand new record needle. SOUNDS GREAT 👍 BETTER THAN ANY CD 💿. 😊
I think the new mixes are phenomenal. I've neen around since the very beginning of the Beatles. I've always preferred the original mono mixes, but these are better and make the songs, sounds, singing, lyrics, playing... sound really crisp, fresh and wonderful; like removing centuries of dust and grime from a painting. It sounds like the band's still alive and well and recorded this stuff the other day.
What can I say? The Blue Album wasn't too much of a surprise having the Deluxe Boxsets. Though lovely to get new mixes of Revolution, Hey Bulldog, Old Brown Shoe. But the Red Album was wow! ! The depth of the audio picture was stunning. Not just the vocals and the instruments, but the space between them all to. Ringo's drumming on Can't Buy Me Love is like a metronome, superb. Lennon's harmonica coming to the fore. George Harrison's vocals coming out of the fog on You've Really Got A Hold On Me. McCartney's bass is now a real force. Words just fail me for how good these mixes are. Surely the remaining albums deserve this treatment. I'm grinning like a Cheshire Cat 😸
What I'm enjoying most this morning is hearing Lennon's beautiful vocals on the Red album, song's such as 'Please Please Me', 'You've Really Got a Hold on Me', 'I Feel Fine', 'Nowhere Man' and 'This Boy'.
Just finished listening to both albums and I love it!!! Those albums are how I first heard their music first when I was 9, and the second album was when I was 10. Brings me back to the first times I ever heard the songs and this time, they are so much more fresher and sounds so new!!!
Thank you for this review. I enjoy seeing your passion for their music. I ordered my Dad the CD's and the vinyls for myself. His have come, mine are yet to arrive so im glad I have something to really look forward to when Royal Mail pull their finger out.
Just streamed the red album on Amazon and it is now become my favorite album of all time. Sounds incredible, I have gone from listening to the Beatles using a cheap little transistor radio to this incredible sonic experience.
Had you ever heard the 2009 mono masters before this? I still think these stereo mixes are thinner than the mono. Vast improvement on the 60s stereo mixes for sure though.
Love your videos Andrew. I am intending to get the Red and Blue CDs soon. Never owned either of these before. I am going through another Beatles phase, long may it continue. I think Now and Then is fantastic.
I've done a little comparrison, and it's nice to have an option. I quite like hearing a little more. Noticed a nice amount of guitar noise on Yesterday, that wasn't so evident on other mixes. I love all that sort of stuff care of remixes like this!
From Me To You, I Want To Hold Your Hand, You Really Got A Hold On Me, Can't Buy Me Love and If I Needed Someone are Red album highlights, and for Blue, just two....Magical Mystery Tour with the "new" electric guitar in the right channel is a revelation, and Hey Bulldog sounds great.
Not in the earlier songs.. I could hardly hear the bass or the bass frequencies on most of the 1963 - 1964 songs and yet I actually had my subwoofer on.
@@Jimmie_Rudolfsson That's weird. I've got the digital versions from itunes and yea, it's very bassy. Hearing instruments now that were drowned out in the original mono versions.
A short comment for now. "OLD BROWN SHOES" Sounds AMAZING! Everything about the instruments is stunningly clear. Bass, Guitars, Drums, Vocals amazing. One of the best remixes 👦👍🎶🎶
'Magical Mystery Tour' wow, what a great new mix! So powerful now, the guitar attackes are so fantastic! You hear a new guitar too! I also agree with Walrus new mix. great great, but the ending is strange....
Thanks for your initial findings on the Red and Blue albums. I found them very interesting and intriguing, will be looking forward to your other reviews as they come up. Myself I will be getting them on CD once my winter fuel allowance comes through (I know naughty me lol)
Just want to point out "Old Brown Shoe" is one of my favorites. Terribly underrated George song with some really creative lyrics and an insane beat, with some great bass playing by Paul!
You are correct. I did not know that. In a 1987 interview for Creem magazine, however, Harrison recalled that he was the bass guitarist on the track, rather than McCartney. When the interviewer, J. Kordosh, suggested that the bass part "sounds like McCartney was going nuts again", Harrison replied: "That was me going nuts.
Hi Andrew; I got my CD boxset from the Beatles' store today (10 Nov) which was nice, and first quick listens are very favourable (through Bose Headphones).... I like the new mixes on the Red album, but need to hear them through my speakers as well, however, the separation of all the instruments and voices throughout is just stunning! I've heard things in the orchestrations that I've never been able to pick out clearly before, and little 'twiddly' guitar parts too; these were always there, but kind of buried in the previous mix.... 😃 I think Giles Martin and his team, along with the Peter Jackson/Wingnut MAL software on the early mono tracks, have done amazing work on both album sets; the clarity is stunning, and the mixes are very nicely done... 👍 I look forward to getting more in-depth listening on days off next week.... 😉
Bang on about magical mystery tour. Always felt the previous mix of that album was quite buried. I’ve only listened to hi res streaming today on decent headphones. Waiting for my coloured vinyl to arrive.
Top video thank you, I’ve just started listening to the red album and I’m impressed, I’m yet to download the blue album, all the Beatles albums are just fantastic anyway and when you get all the remixes it’s all just a different level 😊
As someone who’s always enjoyed the new alternate takes and demos that come with the deluxe editions, I was a bit disappointed that we got the red and blue albums rather than a rubber soul deluxe - but having now heard the new mixes, especially on red, I must say I’m not disappointed anymore! Giles Martin has done it again.
Hi Andrew. I really enjoy You Really Got a Hold On Me with John's vocal and you hear George so well on the backing vocal. Also, rather than the cymbals crashing, I love the two guitars with George and John, such a fantastic sound. The whole song is much improved and one of my favorite early tracks. I Am The Walrus, much like you, I love this song more with John's vocal and Giles turning up the juice on the radio mix. That, to me, is a stunning work. I love the fade out, rather than the boring symphonic mix, this dynamic mix of sounds are so much "John and Paul" at their best ! This is the mix that they will be talking about for many years to come. Genius ! Can't wait for more of your talk on the new albums. Take care.
Thanks Andrew for your content (this and the previous video). I like your presenting style and the pacing of your video. You include a lot of information but no excess verbiage. Why do you think they have put a 2023 song on a 1967-1970 compilation?
I'm glad they included new material to the new releases, especially "Now And Then". Only thing now is I have to re purchase both vinyls again for the new additional material.
i got it on color vinyl ... but yet waiting to arrive !!!! ... so i havent listen to it ... but i cant wait for it ! Thanks for sharing your thoughtg w us ... its great as usual Greetings from Portugal Filipe
Received my red vinyl and blue vinyl editions today, look good but will start to play them this afternoon. Also delivered was the 7” clear vinyl single, the obvious elephant in the room, the red and blue in plain inner sleeves, yet the single has a poly lined inner! Go figure🤷🏼
Hello Andrew, great review. Been listening to the Red vinyl version today. Sounds great, records are flat and quiet, and the packaging and sleeves are high quality (2 albums in one sleeve notwithstanding). I still play original Capitol red and blue albums from the 1970's that I've enjoyed since about age 11. I am VERY disappointed the "James Bond" soundtrack intro was removed before Help. While I also listen to British versions of the Help album without the intro, it was still quite jarring to drop the needle onto Side 3 and hear "Help! I need somebody..." without that great intro which is embedded into my brain from playing the Red album the past 45 years. Thanks for the review! - Tony
It’s a shame Free As a Bird and Real Love aren’t included as the both could benefit from remixing and cleaning up (I still love them though, mostly for taking me back to the incredible Anthology era.
It would make no sense to include those songs. This is a 2023 reissue of albums released in 1973. They have added a song that has been released in conjunction with this reissue, which is typical in the music industry. Free As a Bird and Real Love were made and released in 1995/1996 and have no connection to either 1973 nor 2023. If anything, they should remix the whole Anthology release.
Those two songs were "single" handedly responsible with the documentary for a full on Beatles renaissance in the mid-90s. It's a huge part of the Beatles story and very meaningful for a lot of people who were kids/teens/20s in the 1990s. The 1 album would not have sold the insane amount it did without FAAB, RL and the Anthology documentary a few years before really ramping up Beatlemania again. So I agree, they should be on such an expansive "best of" collection like this. 75 tracks and no room for two top 5 hit singles? Crazy.
Probably the original plan was to simply reissue 2LP editions of the classic Red and Blue, but with remixes, and Now and Then/Love Me Do was going be a stand-alone single. Then someone at Apple or Universal said "Wait, if we put Now and Then and bonus tracks on Red and Blue, we can make a lot more money!", but the LP1 and LP2 for Red and Blue were already pressed, so the bonus tracks had to go on a LP3, and they just shoved it into the slot with LP2, because they didn't have time or the want to redesign the package for 3 vinyl discs. But the CDs had not been pressed yet because the turn around time is much shorter for CD, and there's space on the 2 CDs so you don't have to add a third and change the packaging style, so they had time and capacity to re-order the tracks chronologically and properly for the CDs. That's the only thing that makes sense to me.
I enjoy and appreciate your videos. I'm not a collector. I have their entire catalog in my itunes and that's pretty much the only way I listen to music these days. The one thing I would probably buy if they ever became available at normal prices would be the mono versions of all the albums that were released originally in mono, because often I'm listening through a single ear pod (on my bike). I've really enjoyed the Sgt. Pepper and Revolver mono discs, even heard some stuff I've never heard before. Even so, I've never been the kind of person who needs to have the best audio equipment or release. But I agree that the Red and Blue albums are great for new fans - that's how I got into them at 13-14 and I mostly agree with the additional songs on the new versions, which are very welcome. Cheers.
The Mono CD box can still be had for a reasonable price but you have to watch out for counterfeits. A sealed 2014 mono pressing of the White Album goes for more than the entire CD box.
I ordered the CD sets from Beatles website as soon as they became available. They just mailed them out today, and since they are shipping from UK it could take up to 4 weeks for them to arrive! I don't want to wait a month to get my hands on these CD's, so my wife is currently at Wal-Mart purchasing them for me. Lol. I will just put the other ones on ebay when they arrive. Next time I will just wait until the day of release to purchase new beatles releases, like I have every other release.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts! I listened to the new mixes. They are great except for She Loves You (it sounds really bad) and a couple of other songs. The rest is amazing!
My CD's arrived this morning, and like yourself I put them onto my computer and then onto my phone and my I-Pod (Yes I still use my beloved I-Pod) I bought a pair of Bose headphones in the Jan sales and have never really used them, until today, and they are amazing. I have been dipping in and out of both the red and the blue all day on my breaks at work and I have to say on first listen I love them both. The ones I'm liking so far are Hard Days Night, Day Tripper, She Loves You, all of the newly remixed Rubber Soul tracks, Yesterday, Hey Bulldog, I am The Walrus and Dear Prudence. What can I say about the Rubber Soul tracks except to say that this bodes well for the Rubber Soul Super Deluxe Box, these mixes to me sound superb. But I must stress that at the moment I've only been listening through my new bluetooth wireless headphones. But these mixes are bringing out some great stuff that has always been there, but not as noticeable on other mixes, like Ringo's Bongos on A Hard Days Night. I've always loved how during Gorge's solo on Daytripper Paul seems to take his bass onto another melody completely and it's always blown my mind a bit, and on this mix it seems so much sharper and clearer. There is so much to take in and enjoy, and over the weekend I will be listening to all of these albums through my speakers. I have the CD'S at the moment and will look to invest in the vinyl copies in the new year, and give them a listen through my speakers. Overall I'm happy with these albums and really liking what I'm hearing.
I think everything sounds really good. I guess my only complaints are not including Free As a Bird and Real Love. They also should've added Rain to the Red Album in place of Girl. I also personally would've added Helter Skelter in place of Glass Onion or added I've Got a Feeling. I know they didnt want to drop anything from the original albums but the b-side Old Brown Shoe feels even more out of place now and could've been replaced by another song or to make room for the Anthology songs. Hopefully this leads to new mixes of the studio albums we have yet to get new updated mixes from especially Rubber Soul.
The new red album sets, contains 9 of the 16 tracks released on the Rubber Soul album & single in 1966. Doesn't leave as much left to wait for, apart from the outtakes etc, if ever the SDE is released in the future. I think it's pretty obvious, that the whole album is already fully remixed 2023 style, sitting waiting . Will I buy a Rubber Soul Deluxe Box in the future , YOU BET I WILL. Thanks Andrew for another great video.
Hi Andrew got mine today from official beatles site, red album is great one here, please please me, saw her standing there ,wanna hold your hand, you can't do that, can't buy me love are prob my fav your right the drums sound amazing you can hear ringo all over basically every track, paperback writer to me sounds louder than the one that came with the revolver box set, thease are gona be the go to beatles albums for me now can't wait to listen to the blue one now, have a good day ill look forward to your next video...
brought them and will be using my HD650 headphones with a Chord Mojo 2 am looking forward so much to hear these new versions of tracks have heard many times before
Great stuff ,I am really loving your videos ,A quick question maybe I could get you advice on ,Would you think the "Now and then " 7inch would in the future be more Rare in the Clear or the Marble Vinyl?
Thanks. I don't believe they've announced numbers of how many of each colour have been pressed so I don't think we can know the answer to that at the moment.
Been listening to both CDs..... stunning is all I can say on the 62-66.....Blue is great too but we've already heard a lot of those mixes, which is fine......
Still haven't received mine yet. I've been tempted to immerse myself in the original versions until they arrive but I want to keep my meager brain cells fresh, lol.
to me the track that benefits the most is Magical Mystery Tour. its much fuller overall and that guitar being brought out makes the track really rock. Im getting the red and blue in red and blue vinyl
Speaking of delays, I ordered the Red and Blue box set from Amazon (U.S.) within an hour of the albums being announced and it instantly said it wouldn’t be delivered until December 24th! So, a few days later I ordered both albums separately. Yesterday Amazon said all three orders are being delivered today. If I knew someone with a turntable I’d give them the records for Christmas but as it is I’ll keep the box set and send the individual albums back. In the meantime, I regret not buying the colored vinyl set. 🤦🏻♂️
I noticed from the hype sticker it said "Half Speed Master" will that make a big difference on the sound compared to the CD sound ? Enjoyed your video, looking forward to your live stream.
I really enjoyed this Red Blue 2023 Remix Vinyl first view and your CD version preview. I hope they would also remix the Anthology albums and make the songs at optimum clarity and other sound improvements using the MAL and as Giles Martin mixing to complete all The Beatles Album Discography. The same for the Past Masters compilation album.
These mixes are killer. I wasn't excited at announcement, but after blaring these through my speakers,I'm so happy. I think it's giles best work. Magical mystery tour...the end piano, sounds like it's in a subway.totally killer. Headphones don't suffice. Laptop and phone speakers, no way. 12' speakers pushing from across the room. Absolutely killer.the thump on a song like Michelle is awesome. Girl...amazing. fool on the hill and I am the walrus, the amount of space for all the instruments and piano and acoustic guitars and vocals and symphony is just beautiful. Paul's bass performance on old brown shoe is probably his most fat, beefy, and ruthless performance on bass he ever did. That song is amazing and always was. There's so much to say, honestly. Like I said at first I was like yea whatever. But now I want the cds and vinyl. It'll wait a year till they're priced down. I just got the let it be deluxe vinyl set from Amazon, for 15$. No lie.somebody posted it for sale for like 70$ something, I ordered it and two days later it was cancelled.and the price went back up to 109.XX$ so I contacted em, and they said if I bought it for that price, they'd honor the original price I got it for 2 days before.they typed it all in ,all i had to do was type to support, and than rather than refunding me like 40 something, they gave back like 91$. And I paid 115 with tax so yea I got the 5lp for like 14-15$ scooreee
I had one listen so far to the new mixes on RU-vid (waiting for the cds to come). So far my reaction ranges from "good" to "amazing!" I'm sure there will be some people who gripe or nitpick on things but overall these remixes are a success in my opinion.
I suppose... I'm an 'old un', but that's just on the surface. These mixes make the Beatles sound like a new band, in my opinion. What playing, what vocals, what incredibly songs! It's kind of strange and unerving that they sound like the best band in the world all over again. It hard to think of any other band, today, that comes anywhere near them.
I'm happy with my original vinyl and my fatbox CDs of these. Bought the CD single of Now And Then. That's enough for me regarding this release. Love Now And Then.
Like the red and blue cd 💿 albums are still new to me when I put them on my jukebox I’m watching myself I started to sing 🎤 along with let it be I’m likeing them a lot 😉👍a lot of people in my apartment building can’t get over how well I can harmonize with the Beatles songs please don’t laugh the reason I can sing 🎶 because of I used to stutter when I was young growing up in the 1970’s that’s one of the reasons I love ❤️ music 🎶 I’m always singing 🎶 along with my records & cds 💿 all the time 😉👍
Love these new mixes and just like The Kinks did with “The Journey PT1&2 , these are for the kids getting into these great bands. Just brilliant stuff😊
Great video Andrew, thank you. It would have been easy to put the Red LP in chronological order, as they are all basically three minute songs, any six-seven per side would work. I bet the Blue LP was the problem. The wide range of songs length makes that a difficult jigsaw puzzle to assemble a different way. And if the Blue LP had to have a third "new" disk, it makes sense to do the Red LP the same way. CDs one order, LPs another, the kids will stream and randomize them anyway, I'm just glad to have the new mixes.
I grew up with the blue album (but not the red) as my only Beatles to listen to. I of course heard numerous other Beatles songs on the radio but this was my collection from middle school on. I’ve recently started buying vinyl again and I’m excited to not only have this album again but to also have the new song included so I don’t have to buy the single for one song
I'm not finished listening to "Red" all the way through, but I got as far as Ticket to Ride - this collection is phenomenal. Now I'm hearing real drumming as opposed to dixie-cup light percussion. The only cut I don't like so far is I Saw Her Standing There, ironically one of my favorite of the early days - I don;t like what they did with George's guitar solo - it's good I have the mono versions.
Like your review. As with all your reviews you always mention the hype sticker, do you keep them, where and why? I don't normally keep mine, I do have a Venus and Mars sticker on a record case and managed to keep the wrap around band on the Get Back book until I got annoyed with it 😀
My thoughts about the new mixes Andrew, i like the Red album mixes, well most of them anyway, the blue album a few on there are a bit......, i still prefer most of the mixes for "The Yellow Submarine Songtrack" over the 2023 mixes to be honest.
The people involved with the Yellow Submarine Songtrack album should have remixed the Red and Blue sets. Giles Martin has been doing mostly a lacklustre job with the remixes so far, it’s hit and miss with his work.
Have only listened on spotify but all the tracks on 62-66 up to Rubber Soul are new mixes whereas from Revolver onwards they use the mixes from the remixed albums from the last few years. One thing I notice which I am not sure I prefer is on some tracks like Dear Prudence and A little help from my friends Pauls melodic bass lines are buried deeper and not so noticeable. However great to hear the remixed songs from Rubber Soul and before.
Hi Andrew, I bought the coloured versions of the LPs and I did notice something strange about the coloured LPs The LPs sound great especially the red coloured LPs. The LPs are also nicely flat and packed in a sturdy box. Only the weight of the blue coloured LPs is definitely not 180 grams. I weighed all six LPs on my kitchen scale and came up with the following weights: (RED) LP1. 197, LP2.198, LP3.200 and then it comes: (BLUE) LP1.173, LP2.173 and LP3.155. My kitchen scale won't be 100% accurate, but the blue coloured Elpees clearly weigh less than the red coloured LPs.
I have listened to the digital version and it will take another week of good listening, however I am hearing the usual things like bass being brought up on some tracks and all songs getting that power lift.
I ordered my vinyl set of both Red and Blue on black vinyl on Amazon the day it was announced (I live quite a long way from a physical record store). The day after I placed my order, my arrival date changed to December 24, but I noticed new orders were to arrive on November 11. I thought maybe it was a mistake and would be automatically corrected once the release date came, but nothing changed, so I cancelled my order and ordered another. It’s supposed to come this week.🤷♀️
The Beatles are the reason I started playing the guitar leading me to play with various groups over the years (this isn't relevant). I'm not a big fan of Giles Martin remasters as I prefer the 2009 versions of Beatle albums. I'm glad they made stereo version of She Loves You and I hope Thank you Girl gets one too. Great update. Thank you Andrew.
Lovely video Andrew! I find these new mixes are just decent alternatives, I still prefer listening to the original mono and stereo mixes. I do think the blue album remixes aren’t as good as the red album one (I Am The Walrus falls a part for me). Also them not remixing the Andy White “Love Me Do” for this album is lazy. I will say I’m disappointed in the lack of a proper triple LP jacket kind of in the style of Mono Masters and the reissues of Live at the BBC. Also interesting to note that the apple labels match more the style of the 2012, 2014 mono, and White Album 2018 reissues, and not the newer apple starting with the 2019 Abbey road reissue. But of course I’ll be getting it just because the collector in me is saying to, and it’s the Beatles, cmon!
My first thought when the announcement for these albums was made was 'Gosh is it that few shopping days until Christmas?' But I am glad that Apple/Ume prepared the ground well, and that 'Now and Then' is No 1 in the UK this week. I hope the song is No 1 in as many countries and as many charts as possible. As for the new AI refreshed mixes... From words you have said one of weaknesses of Beatles songs generally was how some of the songs ended. I hope Andrew that you have a full list of songs that previously had odd or botched endings that these remixes have improved on.
