In an interview Paul said he woke from a dream hearing this tune. He got up and wrote the song. Edit: sorry I just saw this was already mentioned. I’ll add a personal note. I first heard this song after a car wreck left me a paraplegic. The line “ I’m not half the man I used to be...” connected me with Paul’s writing for the rest of my life.

Within the 7 yrs they were actively writing they went from writing songs sounding similar to convention to revolutionising the entire music industry. It's like going from the first flight by a human to Concorde in the same span of time. Another fact is their songs were short because it was a requirement of the record companies at the time to have this time limit on songs. This makes it even more difficult to write because every moment has to have great voice leading and harmony.

The song was first released on August 6, 1965; just 8 days before I was born. Truly a timeless piece of music. And the fact that it is only 2 minutes long is a testament to life itself. It's here and then it passes so quickly and we are left longing for the past, and wanting more.

On September 18, 1964, the Beatles in New York met Bob Dylan ... and switched to marijuana from amphetamines used since the Hamburg period (and the frequentation, in the club where was performing, of the US military who received them "supplied") . Dylan told the Beatles: > ... ... and it is enough to know the evolution of their discography after that US tour to understand how much that episode influenced ... 1965 - Help! Guys, I was 7 years old when they came to America, (or, as I often like to say, "When they landed on this planet") I simply cannot convey to you how earth-shifting it was!..It was just a few months after Kennedy was shot, so the nation needed a diversion, and they hit as just the right time..Even at 7 I knew this was an unusual thing that was happening..I was so influenced, that I wanted my hair to grow long, and begged my Mom for Beatle boots..Then, for the next 6 years we watched them grow, musically..This is what made them so special..They never sat still, and kept getting better, and more and more interesting...They changed everything, in worldwide Pop Culture.

I reckon the Beatles songs were a huge impetus for young people all over the world to learn English. I taught English as a Foreign Language years back, and sometimes used song lyrics as part of lessons for my students. I remember teaching a class of teenage Finnish students the lyrics of 'When I'm 64' - but it turned out most of them knew the song quite well anyway - we all sang it together at the end!

Paul McCartney says that he heard this song in a dream, and when he awoke he immediately began writing down the notes. He asked people he knew if it was music that had been played before (whether pop or classical) and nobody recognized it. So, he worked on the song from there. I think John Lennon helped with the lyrics, but it's essentially McCartney's composition.

@@shahaffiq5860 You're entitled too your opinion. I'm not interested in hearing about "Led Zeppelin" "Pink Floyd" "The Rolling Stones" or "Queen" All great bands but not these four guys. Are you aware that this song as of 2017 has been covered by more than 2,200 artist and I don't know what it's up to now and by many many miles the most covered song in history. That's not just some kind of genetic accident or something, it's because it's generational and loved by all age groups, that's what Beatles were and still are. The most beloved band in history and that's not because of hype or that people are stupid. They have sold more than 800 million albums worldwide as of 2014,who knows what it's up to now. They are still a top 3 to 5 selling band in the world every year. As you may be aware that vinyl is very big again. Guess who sold more than anyone in the US did last year, that would be The Beatles. Numbers and popularity alone say they are the greatest band ever. I would that you listen too every album, single and EP in chronological order and listen to the growth from their recording career from 63 to 69 and if you don't walk away saying "Greatest band ever" then maybe go to an ear doctor and get yours cleaned. 50/50 more like 99/01 dude. Although these debates are always subjective. Like the old saying goes "Opinions are like assholes, everybody's got one" Have A Happy New Years and I have nothing more to say on this matter. I am way, way, way in the majority camp. 🎉☮️✌️💕

@dougsusie2319 2 года назад
@@shahaffiq5860 I don't know what galaxy you live in but here in the US along with all free nations in the world record sales and #1 hits are kind of a pretty big deal and barometer. People don't buy a bands music for as of tomorrow 58 years because it's some fad or cool too buy it. No, it's because they're the most beloved band in history and that's for a reason. No other band ever, had two guys named John Lennon and Paul McCartney, the most successful songwriting duo in the history of recorded music. When people who study music theory ( You know, people who actually know what they're talking about) are asked where The Beatles fit into music in the history of the western world. One name and one only comes up and that's Beethoven and they will often joke that The Beatles had a hell of a lot more catchier songs and a lot larger catalog of great music. Stick that in your pipe and smoke it brother ! Argue with them not me. Some people will tell you that ABBA is the greatest band ever. Please, What? I've never heard heard any of these aforementioned bands mentioned I the same breath as Beethoven, sorry that's a fact which is something that you seem too be very uncomfortable with, kinda like with religion. Logic, something religion has always been uncomfortable with. I've been listening too The Beatles since 1964 and sorry brother, and I've listened too a hell of a lot of music in my 63 years and there has been a lot of great music, just not on these guys level and I don't need numbers or stats too know what my ears are hearing. Like I said though, it's all subjective although most of the free world would tend too be in my favor and I don't know, it kinda helps the credibility along a little. Ya know?

Wow, guys. Yesterday by the Beatles? Omg, this is one of the first songs I heard as a child that made me feel real emotion. And at that time, we had no idea of the genius of Beatles producer George Martin for supplying the strings and orchestra as background to Paul’s masterpiece of a song. You two are the BEST!

Some songs are timeless because the human condition, our souls and emotions, are timeless and universal. From the garden to today, love, pain, despair, joy, we have all felt and understand them. Music, art, literature etc, are vehicles of expression AND collective understanding of emotions and therefore, the arts are also timeless.

You guys have seriously never heard this song? It must be a different generation but this to me is a classic! You have heard them and realise they're importance, so apologies.

I'm pretty sure they have. He seemed to be humming some parts out during the first verse.

Think the reason why songs were so short is because that was the format at the time. Think queen with Bohemian Rhapshody and Led Zepplin with Stairway to heaven were one of the first bands to break that song format. Dont know if this is true but i assume that shortness of song (1:30 mins to 2 mins) is a partly a product of the recording technology of the time (aka the traditional kind of record).

There is the Beatles and then everyone else. As a huge YES fan try some of the 20 min songs.

I consider “Yesterday” to be the first modern rock song.

Also these well-known songs are about 2 minutes long. Please Please Me All My Loving Can't Buy Me Love Eleanor Rigby… They wrote songs themselves, played themselves, sang themselves. They were just the right band, I think.
