The Beautiful Blue Pullman on the Cumbrian Coast 12th June 2024

Hard to believe that this beautifully maintained and ultra-modern looking train is almost half a century old. In 1978 they were introduced on the Western region of British Rail. I lived near Newbury at the time and often used them for evenings in London when they were absolutely brand new - arguably the best train BR ever built.
The Cumbrian coast line remains one of the most spectacular in England, albeit slow, and deserves to be more widely known. So - how could I resist the opportunity to film a beautiful train in such glorious surroundings?

Thank you. All being well, I'll be back there tomorrow. I'm determined to get aerial footage of the token swap at Whitehaven, though whether I'll be able to get close enough to see what's really happening - - we can but try! Best wishes.

Excellent video footage. I was onboard the train that day, a fabulous trip. I spent the entire coastal route looking for the Isle of Man and eventually assumed I must have missed it. I now learn from your insightful commentary that actually it wasn't even visible at all. At least I didn't miss it I suppose!
@schoolshorts

Glad you enjoyed the day. I ride the line frequently and it's always disappointing when the island isn't visible. However, it's still a wonderful journey - and all too little known.

Lovely drone footage and great narration , the HST entered service on the WR from 1976 and we visited Swindon Works on a school trip in August 1977 which was our first ever HST ride !

Thank you. Although I grew up in Darlington, another great railway town, in the 1950s, my school never did anything like that. Lucky you!

Great shot I can remember seeing the blue Pullman travelling through Southall from Paddington 1959 at speed what a sight! Along with the D800 warship Diesel’s and the Evening Star brand new just out of Swindon there was a good mix of locomotives to be seen there, I can recall sitting on the foot bridge wondering what was coming down the track? As it was Blue. Great times

Living in the North East of England at that time, I never saw the original. I'm more than happy to see and film the present "Blue Pullman" - and if I can catch it in such glorious surroundings then so much the better!

@@schoolshorts I'd guess that battling the blustery coastal weather here sometimes might be very hard work for a drone - with risks of it being lost at sea!

@schoolshorts
@schoolshorts 28 дней назад
Carlisle signalmen do this all too often so the regular photographers will usually position themselves so that they can move rapidly to an alternative spot if necessary. The drone is supposed to be able to handle a Force 6 wind so it wasn't particularly pressed on that occasion.

Lovely video Tim. Out of our scenic coastal routes they often rate Dawlish highly, but for me this is certainly my favourite as well, the low sped limits giving time to take it in even better. Carlisle up to their tricks again even catching the driver out this time, at least you spotted the change in time to get some video of the arrival. The HST really was one of our best trains especially when brand new with the lower seats giving a fantastic panoramic view as you glided along. Nothing we have today comes close to it for comfort.

The only coastal railway in Britain to rival it is the Morar section of the Mallaig line, with its stunning views of the Small Isles and the Cuillins of Skye. I use the Cumbrian coast line frequently and never tire of it. The IC125s - pity they couldn't have just built an upgraded (tilting perhaps?) version of it.
@cedarcam
@cedarcam 28 дней назад
@@schoolshorts I went on that line years ago when loco hauled trains ran up there The class 37 with a short train of MK1 and a 45 ton tanker on the back, I think carrying diesel for fishing boats. Yes a shame the HST were not upgraded and built in more numbers. The class 91 were designed to tilt but never did. They are good trains but not quite as smooth as the HST.

I have had over two miles in the past but it needs a totally unobstructed line between aircraft and controller. It doesn't take much to degrade the signal.

The Cumbrian Coast Line a lovely route for sure - ideal for a day trip on a nice day. I've used it to get to Barrow-in-Furness from Dumfries a few times, ignoring the National Rail ticketing system insisting I travel the more expensive route via Lancaster involving 2 changes. I buy two day return tickets Dumfries to Carlisle and Carlisle to Barrow involving one change and somewhat cheaper (if taking slightly longer). Nice to see this line utilised for special excursions too, though it would be great to have a few scheduled locomotive hauled services again on the line alongside the DMUs.
