The biggest tip for new artists I can give is to actually do projects. Dont wait till you are good enough at drawing. Draw that manga, draw those things you like, make a video game with your drawings. Nothing kills a beginner artist faster than the one that only studies. You are suppose to be getting into drawing because you enjoy it. Who the frick can enjoy drawing when you treat it like an academic, professional job right out the gate. If you ask me, the drawing for fun should take up 80 percent of the days you are learning to draw. Naturally you'll learn alot just by trying to do stuff. Remember to use references and to not be afraid to use any tools available. Nothing is wrong if the end product looks good. Just don't cheat yourself.

Recently I started to get tired of drawing, because I pushed myself to hard of always doing gesture drawings and line drawings first, before I could draw what I wanted for 4 months... I got better at drawing from my starting point, but Is really starting to get tiring to do the same thing. Maybe I am lazy.

"If only we could pull out our brain and use only our eyes." "Bad artists copy. Good artists steal. ” "The chief enemy of creativity is 'good' sense.” "It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child. ” -Pablo Picasso Picasso always cuts me to the bone.

Sorry Im new to drawing art. When looking at references like dynamic body shapes. Dont you copy it at first when you are learning? Is that a bad thing to do? Then again, in the video here he says to draw it with as less lines as possible to get the general shape of it. And i guess the good way to learn is to absorb the information of looking at the reference and drawing it into your perspective? im not too sure if i'm properly getting this right sorry lol
@XraynPR
@XraynPR 3 года назад
I really dislike that Picasso quote, it sounds like drawing realistic is easy, when it's not and requires tons of studying and practice. That quote is so often used to brush aside realistic artwork in a way of saying "it's much better to draw like a child, it has so much more meaning"
@XraynPR
@XraynPR 3 года назад
@Punch Line yes, but that doesn't mean that it's perfectly fine to not learn any fundamentals - like children don't really know. Also, the thing with really famous artists is that they don't necessarily only become famous due to their skills, but due to other factors like what circle likes them or what the story behind them is.
@yoshikhurazi1769
@yoshikhurazi1769 3 года назад
@Punch Line To some extent I agree. However, I do not believe Picasso would have been nearly as great of an artist if he did not already have a strong grasp of the fundamentals. It takes proficiency to be able to break the rules without ending up with a mess. Despite superficial similarities, no child's drawing would show the confidant and expressive line work of a Picasso. Matisse is no different. Einstein would have never come up with the theory of relativity if he had no prior study of calculus and the Newtonian physics that he would later supplant. Every advancement in any field stands on the shoulders of it's old giants - art is no exception.

I've drawn a lot when i was 15/16 yo (im 20 now), but due to muy own pressure, depression, and anxiety, as the years passed i stopped drawing.. my brother pressured me aswell to just practice to get better, Any other thing that i showed him wasnt good enough or he just didnt want me to draw What i felt like drawing.. and that killed my Drive to draw in digital, i was tired of disappointing him and myself as a result of It.. but this man is making that Drive come back, a part of me wants to cry for losing time and being useless for the past years, but other part of me wants to be great, to make money and be proud of myself and my proyects. Probably no one Will read this entirely, but thank you Marc, you are a great person for inspiring and teaching so much people.

I know this well. On my last drawing (copy of a manga panel) I forced my self to slow down and it came out better than it usually does. Characters were a little wider than the reference,, perspective was a little tilted, but overall it looked better than what I usually am able to do. Patience. One of the best comments I ever saw was saying that if you have to erase that part and redraw it 100 times that's okay.

Man, I found this video at just the perfect time. I recently got back into art after giving it up 10 years ago when I was 10 years old. I used to love drawing anything and everything but of course, as parents usually do, they discouraged me in fear I’d fall deep in love with it because they didn’t see it as something that’d make me successful in the future. But recently (about a month ago), I kind of just started doodling around and before I knew it, I was drawing again! Sure, right now my skills are VERY poor but I’m determined to go above and beyond with this because honestly I’ve always loved it. Even if it takes me years upon years, I WILL get good at art! It helps your videos are so inspiring just seeing you effortlessly draw stuff. At the same time that I get jealous, I also get motivated! So I’m going to keep at this no matter what. Thanks for this video, Marc. And thanks for reigniting that spark.

"Damn right boiiiiii" laughed so hard at this one :D Still, I bought the full ART School a bit over a year ago and didn't even finish the very first Term... I was struggling with LoL addiction and everytime I sat down to my desk, I would rather play some League than learn to draw, which is a bummer since I drew a lot as a kid/teenager and becoming a concept artist/illustrator is still my dream (27yo). I was surrounding myself with tons of books and drawing materials, thinking it would motivate me to draw, but they ended up gathering dust on shelves, as League was still my number one priority. Yesterday I uninstalled this crap and your video couldn't come up at any better time. I'm going back to ART School. I hope that I will find drawing my new addiction! Would you have any advice as to how to stay on this path this time? I think that I only need a daily motivation boost, like this video, to keep me going - but where do I find it every day? Oh damn, sorry for such a lengthy comment, see you on Saturday's stream with my first submissions! (I won't have any submission for today I guess, but I'll still come to watch :D)

Put art everywhere, your wallpaper on your phone and or laptop, on your desk, in your bedroom, just everywhere! Daily sketching, put something on in the background like videogame playthrough or whatever to keep you going and not make it a chore. A schedule or lesson plan helps ofc tutorials help but the real milage is put that stylus to tablet every single day. Can´t be bothered some days? Commit 5 minutes atleast. You ll want to keep going, its addictive once you start. Set a timer. Sketch lots and lots, fill up many pages with small sketches on them, thumbnails etc. size of the drawing don´t matter, the skillbuild is the same! Set a goal like ok if I can do 10 sketches today I am good. Make that sketchbook your zen. Make the goal a quantifiable goal like draw 10 everyday or practice x, do lesson x this week. Skip the rendering, its practice! (unless you practice rendering). Ideas and brainstorming visually is very much a key concept. Finish sketching first, then go back and tear it to pieces lmao How bad do you want it? If you really want it, you´ll MAKE the time. I sketch daily 5 hours+ ontop of my fulltime dayjob. You will fit it in there somehow if you really want this thing. I get up early morning and after work and chores sketch, sketch and sketch and learn. Its a good habit at this time and it´s fun as heck as its just sketching! As a upcoming concept artist, you´ll also want to practice construct your own "mission" art briefs. Play it like a videogame, its fun. Learn to create them and the workflow, how to design and problemsolve visually like its the back of your hand, it will benefit greatly in your future if you already start to think like a concept artist even as you practice art fundies. Already imagine yourself at home like you´re in a game studio, replicate that environment as much as possible. Set deadlines, crunches, production workflow..client contact simulations (get a friendo to send you briefs or revisions or make it up yourself lmao). The more you can simulate or feel like you´re in there, the more prepared you will be once it gets like that for real. Atleast you won´t be totally lost when someone asks you to "hey give me 100 concepts end of the week or redesign this make it cooler etc". Look at where the bar is, try to reach that bar the pros set in their work, look at their workflows, sketches....how they present themselves. They reveal a ton of info on how to present stuff, whats in or how to break down things etc. I wanted to become once a concept artist but my life took a different path, but I learnt alot trying at one point to reach there. These days I just use what I learnt for fun and habit ;) I did a mentorship where I worked fulltime job at the same time. It entailed getting up 3:00 at night to work every single day, then fulltime job, then draw and paint for hours again. It was brutal but I never regretted it. Tho, it´s not something I recommend, try to balance stuff lol get like a parttime job or live on savings or something... all depends on how much you want it. Do mentorships too with actual conceptartist if you can, their inside info is the bomb to gain a foothold. Xia taptara, a concept artist (I think he´s been in there 10+ years at this point!) has a great 8 weeks mentorship that doesn´t cost an arm and a leg. Worth its weight in gold. Artstation has so much inside info in their e-learning on the reality of working as a concept artist too. But most of all, remember to have fun on the way too. Only compare your progress to yourself. Focus on you and where you want to be. It doesn´t have to be fast.... let it take the time it needs, only you decide the pace. It is possible but you have to have discipline and be ready to commit and work hard, especially if you are selftaught. Getting the art right is just the first step...there´s so much more than just the art too working in that industry. Its very hard work.

Damn guys, I didn't expect such commitment in the answers section! Thank you a lot, now I feel like to get a daily motivation boost I only need to read these comments :D So far it's going great, turns out that LoL took so much of my time, that now I even start to draw because of boredom, having too much free time to spend out of a sudden :D

Thanks brother! :D The best way to stay on track is to go on this journey with other people. Find some nice communities/discord/forums and make yourself a big part of it any way you can. The ART School discord is very nice for that, get in there ;) And yep, showing up every week for the streams and interacting with the others in chat is a big one too! You got this!

I like your vid very much because I can easily understand what are you talking about, I’m not from any English speaking country. Therefore some of the art guides are too complicated for me because they use some hard words which I can’t comprehend. Secondly your videos provide soooo much details that I need. Anyway I just wanna tell you , your video helps me to understand this industry and my career pathways a lot, I really enjoy watching your video🥰🥰🥰

Learning through digital medium presents its own challenges, but it sure makes fixing mistakes easier and maintaining motivation has been easier as a result. I just need to find more stuff that assumes I'm starting from scratch again.

Remember when getting art tablets: Expensive doesn't always mean better! I started off with a $400 art tablet display, then I stopped using the display part, and then it stopped working right. Now I have an $80 no display smaller art tablet, and it is SO MUCH BETTER. I don't have to plug it in, and I don't have to charge my stylus! Bonus: It's also very light! So my current art tablet is an XP-pen Star 06
