The BEST 1Zpresso grinder? My Verdict

In this video we take a close look at 1Zpresso Q2, Jx, J-Max and K-Max.
1Zpresso Jx Pro is still a part of the brand's line up, but in the video I argue that it has been somewhat cannibalized by other models.

Thanks for your thorough reviews! There is a lot of nuance in comparing different brands and models of gear, and I appreciate all the time you put in to this. I was specifically looking for a grinder that could do both pour over (my main daily coffee) and espresso (the occasional coffee for frothed drinks or and extra zip for long days or nights I'll be up. Yours is the only that made it really clear that I could have a good grinder that does both and without going way over my intended budget. JX it is (chosen over the Timemore C3 and Chestnut Slim Plus). Thanks!

I spent last night binging on your videos, trying to choose a 1Zpresso model. I have to say, your reviews are amazing. You really give a clear idea of the products. The usability, the flavour, where and how they sit compared to other products. You have a gift for determining the information that we need in order to make an informed decision. So many reviews are lacking in info and overflowing with ego and superfluous commentary. Yours I find to be very thoughful and thorough and balanced (just like a fine cup haha!). I adore watching Hoffman videos but when it comes to reviews...I'm going to say you've got the edge. I sure hope you keep up with this pursuit and that your endeavour can grow. You deserve it and we need people like you. Cheers! I was leaning towards the JX (to grind espresso for 2 months until I receive a Niche, and to be my forever pourover-dedicated grinder). But now I'm thinking the K-Max will provide a nicer workflow, but more importantly, a different flavour profile compared to the Niche and the JX. I'm not really certain of which flavour profile I prefer at this point so I thought this would be a good path of discovery to go down. Otherwise, if I knew I really prefer huge flat burrs, I might just be tempted into a Wilfa with SSP. But for now that seems a bit much and potentially not necessary.
@coffeechronicler
@coffeechronicler 2 года назад
Thank you so much for the kind words! Really encouraging to read :) I think K Max would be ideal for your setup. I would not suggest Wilfa with SSP for espresso, since the motor is a bit too weak to handle more than filter coffee with those burrs. But I think you will be quite happy to start out with conicals. If not you can always sell the Niche and get a Eureka or DF64 with SSP.

Love Love Love your videos because of you I bought my first hand grinder as (JX-Pro) and a year later bought the JX because I got tired of changeing between settings for poor over and french press all the way back down to espresso. But I have to say the JX-Pro is always producing some tasty espresso and before bought the JX it was making amazing cups of coffee. Again thank you for your videos they have given so many of us the information needed to go ahead and drop the money to buy a life long grinder. Thanks again Happy new year and God bless (:

I've had the espresso focussed (and now discontinued) JE-Plus with coated Italmill burrs for about 1.5 years now and it's been really great for my Cafelat Robot, I couldn't be happier. The magnetic blind shaker fits perfectly on top of the Robot portafilter and the adjustment steps are great for espresso. I also used it for pour-over, however, recently I added the JX for pour-over/Aeropress, so the JE-Plus is now my dedicated espresso grinder. If I had to find an espresso grinder in their current sortiment I'd probably opt for the J-Max because of the tiny 8 microns adjustment steps. My JE-Plus has 12.5 micron steps and a single click can make a noticeable difference, so for espresso I think it's worth to get a grinder that is primarily an espresso grinder. I just wish the J-Max had a blind shaker option, I really got used to that in my workflow. On the other hand, the K-Max with 22 microns is very appealing as an allround grinder, but it's probably slightly more pour-over/Aeropress focused. The more expensive K-Plus appears to be a K-Max plus blind shaker, but I think the blind shaker is mainly an advantage for espresso, I wouldn't bother too much about it if it's primarily for pour-over. On the other hand the blind shaker also fits perfectly on top of an Aeropress, so it can still be a plus for this use case. I love my new JX grinder, too, it's really super fast. The only drawback is that I've been spoiled by the JE-Plus' magnetic receiver. Also, for most beans 30g is the absolute max for the JX, I sometimes have to start grinding with the handle not fully attached for a few rounds and then push it in completely. It's not a problem, but the larger capacity of a JE-Plus which I think is identical to J-Max and K-Max would be better. Still, I couldn't justify to myself to spend quite a bit more money for a receiver and slightly more capacity. I was considering the Q2 as well, but I couldn't find the heptagonal one anywhere when I was looking a few weeks ago. Regardless of heptagonal or pentagonal versions, ultimately for me the capacity of the Q2 appeared too small. It looks perfect for a single dose, but probably couldn't handle 2 in one go, so I gave it a pass.

I bought the K-max after watching this as my first grinder and it’s currently my only grinder. I make more in my V60 than anything, but wanted the ability to make above average espresso as well. So far it has not disappointed! By far the tastiest pour over I’ve ever had - but to be fair I went from pre-ground Starbucks to whole bean specialty coffees. It was like going from a Civic to a Ferrari
@naturestrail2296

Is any whole bean a specialty coffee? Or what's exactly meant by specialty? My wife's about to bring me some green non roasted whole beans from Mexico to play with. All hand grown hand picked stuff from southern Mexico. Always loved coffee but I don't keep up with all the terminology so I wasn't sure if there's something specific that makes one a specialty coffee or if it's just a way of saying whole bean or more natural? Anyway, any input be great. Can't ever learn too much
@Naokarma
@Naokarma 2 года назад
That's probably the best way to phrase it with these types of things. All the major components involved in making coffee seem to have tiers to them, where it's not worth getting anything on a similar tier of quality, but if you jump by 2 or 3, you'll really feel the difference.

It's never just 1 thing that makes great coffee, it's all the little techniques, bean choices, tools, etc used for the job. The more you hone it in and adapt all these things, the more you'll dial it in for your personal perfect brew or pull. It's a fun thing and can create some really amazing and unique cups of coffee. What a tasty hobby haha
@camaperture8116
@camaperture8116 Год назад
@@naturestrail2296 specialty coffee is not defined by being whole bean. Whole bean simply means it's not pre-ground. Regardless of what you get, you want whole bean coffee and you don't want to grind it until you're ready to drink. Grinding beans exposes more surface area to oxygen which leads to stale coffee. Hand grown and hand picked also does not necessarily define specialty. If it's low quality robusta, hand growing and picking it ain't gonna make it a fine coffee. Specialty is basically defined as 100% arabica that meets certain standards of quality. I don't know what those standards are in a way I can define them but the more you learn about the source of your coffee, where it's from, who processed it, how it was processed, and if a trusted source can provide a cupping score that falls at least in the mid-80's range, you know you're playing in the world of specialty. And there ain't no reason in hell to come back from that.

@@camaperture8116 Is there actual differences in the plant between robusta and Arabic? Can you tell visually by looking at the bean or plant at all? What makes it one or the other? Is it the ground and or weather it's grown in or an actual variance in species?

There is already a Q2 available with hexagonal burrs on the China market (same existing outer body). It’s hard to find at the moment. You’re right that 1Zpresso appears to have adopted the East Asian smartphone manufacturer philosophy of: 1) “There’s a model for everyone” 2) frequent new model or update releases 3) varying models and availabilities for different parts of the world Fortunately, their products are of excellent quality and performance.

We begin our morning with drip coffee (65 grams of beans). Based on your video, and your demonstration of the speed at which this grinder can grind, and the ease of changing grind settings, I just purchased the K Max. This will now be the ONLY grinder in my kitchen. I'm sure I will notice a richer more flavourful cup of drip coffee with this high precision grinder. Consistency of the grind size is paramount, and it sounds like the K Max is now the gold standard of performance in this regard.. Thank-you again!!

Both are awesome. Amazing grinders that compete or even beat the most expensive hand grinders, all facts considered. These two grinders, while quite very similar, hold their own pros. The JX-PRO comes with the center burr attached to the shaft which brings ultimate stability and granular consistency (not WAY superior, but still an upgrade) and this also allows for a much finer step control. The JX being a bit cheaper does great for simplicity, ease of cleaning and can do espresso much better than comandante red clix and this alone is an strong selling point!

I have some version of the K-Plus. It is expensive but honestly fantastic all around. The convenience of the magnetic catch cup and the outer adjustment ring are things I would never ever give up on another hand grinder. They probably do release way too many models which can be very confusing for the customer , but at least they innovate heavily with these sorts of features. It is this innovation and convenience which leads me to keep recommending them to people over other popular grinders such as the Commandante.

I just got the K-plus, upgrading from a cheap electric burr(Sboly). So much more consistent, no big surprise there. What really impressed me (and sold me on it) was the grind time. I thought I'd get this grinder as a way to get great pour-overs with espresso capabilities every once in a while. My thought was I'd get a flat burr electric for espresso later on and therefore have dedicated grinders for both. Now that the K-plus is in my hands, I still think I'll follow that plan, but solely to have a flat burr. I really don't think that there is much to be gained in workflow speed from an electric, the K-plus is wicked fast, consistent and virtually no retention. Grind effort is pretty easy, even with light roast at 3.5 clicks. I'd need a pretty fast recovering espresso machine to outpace the grinder workflow. I have zero regrets, for anyone considering, buy one (any of the line from what I gather in this video and my experience with the one product).

Great video! I'm a 1Zpresso reseller. We still sell way more JX-pro's than JX or J-max, I guess it's just the right price/feature balance for a lot of people. I agree you don't always need the 12,5 micron resolution of the JX-pro with manual espresso, but having a top adjustment compared to the JX's bottom adjustment is still appealing to a lot of our customers apparently. The J-max isn't that more expensive than JX-pro if you take into account that half of the price difference is in the cylinder case that comes with it. (and you get the outer adjustment and magnetic catch cup too...) The K-series are identical, the only difference is the catch cup. K-pro has a screw-on cup, K-max has a magnetic cup, and K-plus has a wider magnetic cup with the 2 bottoms, flat or grounds shaker. For espresso, the grounds shaker fits perfectly on a 58mm basket, a Pro2 basket, etc so (to me) really worth having. The K-plus also has the nicer square case. The pentagonal Q2 has a burr that's similar to the Timemore C2 in design, but AFAIK it's not the same.

I had the same decision to make and went with the k-max. Across all taste test opinions online The stainless steel burr set design and engineering seems to have a much better interaction with beans than the coated titanium in the j-max. Resulting is a more refined flavour experience, a quality in the same direction set by the commandante’s set up. And with over 400 plus steps the j-max just seems overkill if you only need to experience espresso with in twenty clicks. That just seems much more practical.

I see it is slower to grind than the other models, but it’s fast enough for me, and I have no issue with it because the feel of grinding coffee with it is so nice and pleasing. Another nice part about is that the grip part unscrews so you can easily brush and blow fines out from the top chamber for a quick cleaning. Bought the J-max after coming across your review while researching for my first grinder. This is my first foray away from Nespresso and the like, and I’m enjoying the learning experience. I’ve a D’Longhi Dedica which, again, takes a bit of getting used to. I’m still hit-and-miss with the fineness of the grind and weight I put in the basket… not to mention I haven’t a clue on what beans I should really be using. If you’re bothered, I’d love to hear of any pointers you could give me? Thanks

Beans from a coffee roaster, fresh. James Hoffman has a video about dosing. A coffee scale is a must so you can measure how much coffee grinds you put in, and the amount of espresso you get out. This is how you work out your ratios. Experiment and good luck.

Hey great video! thanks! May I know what was your grind setting for JX (non-pro) when you did this video? 12g at 13-15 seconds. With light medium roast, I did 15g (63 clicks) at 23 seconds and 20g at 30 seconds, and I was turning the handle at your speed. Wondering why it seems slower instead of 1g per second.

I've tried them all and to me the JX-pro is still king, all-rounder grinder. Amazing flavor and smooth operation. There's NOTHING I would want from its bigger brothers in terms of performance, flavor or quality. In fact, I love the JX-pro adjustment knob which is hidden under the handle lid. This is cool because you just can't touch it accidentally and change your setting while grinding. Also the wider body and upper opening makes it easier to fill the beans without making a mess. JX-pro is superbly adjustable (only second to the espresso-oriented Jmax, and not by much) and makes absolutely delicious and sweet filter and pour over coffee. Less parts, easy to clean and calibrate. You may think that it's no longer easy to recommend given that price wise the newer Jmax or the Kpro aren't quite far. And I agree, most people would just pick the freshly released models for a similar price BUT if you look closer, the JX-pro is still the best option as all rounder, technically speaking and it's also cheaper
@mrYodacop

Great point , thanks ,...I am also thinking about JX-pro , I found it even cheaper then standard Jx , in my country for 142 euros , ...and want to upgrade from my Coffee tales grinder ( basically something like Xeoleo or Timemore C2) , I would like to have a lever espresso on future , so that is the reason for upgrade.i was only curious about the speed of Jx pro , i think Chronicler mentioned that it is slower than standard Jx ....but if you are saying it is that smooth , then I am leaning towards Jx pro....thanks for your opinions
@manuelpenaruiz3694

@@mrYodacop all grinders from 1Zpresso are very fast and JX isn't any faster than the JX-pro TBH I would even say that speed isn't a relevant factor here. As said, these grinders are really fast and really precise. Some people may argue the JX-pro is better for espresso, and this is true ONLY if you're using a real espresso machine. But for lever units like the Flair, it doesn't matter and you'll be OK with any model. K-series is a bit easier to crank too, as the burrs have 7 edges instead of J series 6 and are bit sharper too
