I’ve only ever borrowed the S5 and it was excellent! I loved it. I haven’t tried the S5 II yet, but i have played with it at a convention and it will be amazing, maybe I’ll even buy one. The viewfinder is quite a bit improved as well.
This video needs to be shared more. Its one of the few videos that actually explains what AF you should use and why. There is a few Lumix S5ii who say the AF is letting them down. Its pretty much them not knowing how to use the AF the right away.
Really appreciate this - I’m glad the info in this video is useful, and I totally agree that if people understood the different focus modes more, they might actually have a much better experience using the camera :)
@@JoshCameron Spot on. I took it out last week to film Northern Ireland Gay pride. The sole prepose was to test the AF out. Run and Gun style. During the day I was shooting dancers on a stage. Using the 20-60mm. Had the lens to the full FL. Had it on HD AF. As i was filming i started laughing at just how good the AF was. The dancers on the stage were using the whole stage and the HD AF kept up. Using the All area HD AF I notice that the camera would pick up multiple people if they were close together. My friend uses the Sony a7siii. Before the S5ii came out I always joked 'imagine if Lumix brought a full frame camera that had AF like the Sony'. Lumix 5ii for me that camera. I would even say its better then the Sony.
Hi Josh, great video as always with clear explanations and useful tips. Many thanks! I can't wait for May to arrive to get the S5ll X. Keep up the good work
Talking about focus, if 'touch screen' setting is on : just touching the screen will move the focus rectangle to the part you are touching (no need fot the joystick), and if continuous focus is on, it will refocus. If you change Touch AF to Touch AF+AE it will also adjust the light. (I still need to find out what this does when all kind of face detection is on) Just noticed this works on the S5m2 and not on the S5, I wonder why, it looks like the same touch screen.
Be careful guys with the AF Speed and Sensitivity. I set it to the max to have quick sharp images but I got a lot of focus breathing and trembling in the image. The zero is indeed the best setting.
@@JoshCameron Josh - how does the S5II switch from photo to video - Ive yet to see a video that shows how fast or slow it is. For instance in my Nikon there is a dedicated switch that saves my last settings.
Hey there! You don’t need to remap the joystick to get the box up. All you need to do is long press and you will get the small box. That way you wont sacrifice the joystick as an FN button.
Hi Josh thanks for another great video, as a beginner they are really helping me to learn not only my S5ii but photography in general. One question please What does the AF ON button do? I have read the manual but still can't work out what its function is. Thanks again please keep the videos coming you have no idea how much they help.
Great tips, thanks so much! My question (to anyone reading this): what (if any) AF setting would you use to shoot street, so primarily architecture, cars, lighting, details as well as crowds - and the latter was a problem as I found during one of my shoots. I was filming busy nightlife and the focus would look for people, so in a crowded Chinatown, you can imagine it was jumping to and fro. Should I have focused on an area (with AF and lock it in or with MF)? Most of my footage is so focus-jittery I doubt I’ll be able to extract (by culling the pulsing bits) enough for what I need. 😢
I got my s5ii over a month ago , sold my a7s3 but kept all my Sony lenses and old A7r3. The Lumix s5 ii has unacceptably bad AF. It will confuse a coat hanger for a person, it will go ape sht if there's more than one person I'm frame. Best thing I've done is manually focus override when needed. Lumix has probably the worst AF when it comes to relying on it to make basic decisions. Face AF doesn't recognize faces allot of times. It's as bad as a first Gen Sony camera
Hi Josh, I've been saving for a year now with the intentions of purchasing a A7iv....that was untill I watched your videos. I'd appreciate it if you could do a comparison between the S5ii VS A7IV and which lenes they offer. I'm looking mainly for photography 📸 this would be really insightful, Keep up the great videos. 👊🏻
Hi Josh, Thanks to you and many others, I recently pre-ordered the S5II and started building my L mount lens collection. I recently bought the Panny 50mm F1.8 and was looking to add an 85mm. Debate between the Sigma f1.4 and Panny f1.8. Going by some older videos I saw; the Sigma struggled a bit with auto-focus with the original S5. Haven't seen a video testing the Sigma 85mm f1.4 on the new AF system of the S5II. Was wondering if the system allows the lens to perform to the same level as its E-Mount version. Awesome content and looking forward to more in the future!
Yeah of course! You can tap the screen in the wide AF mode and it'll bring up either a tracking box (for a subject) or an AF area box. But that can easily be selected :)
Hi! Nice video. Is it possible to set a custom FN button to toggle Detection ON/OFF by only pressing once? With the default way we have to press 3 times (AF mode button → UP button → half press shutter button)
Excelent video Josh :) Question: what would be the ideal autofocus mode for putting the camera on a gimbal and started walking on the street? There would be plenty of people walking around and passing by, I just dont want the focus to go crazy. What would you choose?
Hi Josh, many thanks for another useful video on Lumix cameras. I am get inspiration from you settings for my new Lumix S5 II as I had a doubt about Quick AF as the Lumix manual says that "The battery will drain faster". What is your feedback on that point ? Loved the tip on the Joystick allocated to Focus Area... Many thanks
Hi Josh, great video, very helpful as always! Concerning settings: have you tried loading settings file (Camset) of the MKI into the MKII? The manual says, it is only possible with the same model, but nothing said about variants. Thanks.
(FEATURE REQUEST) PLEASE HELP Over the years while using competitor cameras (Sony and Canon), I have grown accustomed to having the ability to pause the AF when recording video with the touch of a button. Touch to pause AF and touch again to reengage AF (creates a hybrid Auto Focus and Manual Focus system). This eliminates unwanted AF hunting, where essentially you let the camera do the heavy lifting and you as the operator pause it for a while and finesse the focus in those tricky areas or simply just to lock focus for extended periods to ensure no AF focus hunting etc..... Currently, to my knowledge, on my Lumix S5iix you can only assign an AF Lock button which means you have to keep holding the button pressed (Which isn't very useful for video work). The workaround is to disable the Aauto Focus using the switch on the lens which is annoying, creates unwanted sounds, and introduces camera shake making my use case unusable ): If this feature is introduced to the S5iix Id probably put my other cameras in the bin! This is the only feature I see missing ps If anyone knows a place to suggest feature requests to Panasonic please let me know Thanks a bunch (:
Same boat here. Sold my a7s3 for the s5ii but kept all my Sony lenses and my old A7r3. The AF on the s5ii truly is horrible compared to Sony, canon and even Fuji. Very disappointed as it is a brilliant camera otherwise
hey, I was wondering what lenses do focus the best? Lumix lenses or sigma? because as far I know the Lumix lenses got 2 focus motors and the sigma only one. great video!!
Thanks for the video, Josh. I think the face and eye detect af mode would be good if you are reviewing a product and hold the product up in front of your face (hence, blocking your face) to have the camera switch focus to that product. Otherwise, I am not sure of the benefits of face and eye over the human detect mode.
aramv Awesome Video! Were you able to check if the HDMI-out keeps the image desqueezes on anamorphic mode without the help of an external monitor’s desqueeze function like the ninja v?
i wonder if S5II can work with "AF" EF Canon Lenses too ...coz remember u said Sigma and other 3rd Party Lenses works good with S5II, and i got couple of my EF lenses with my S5 (1)
Hi, these are great tips! But when i keep the joystick pressed it does not bring up the custom button assign menu, could this be different on the s5iix? Holding it pressed does bring it into one area (without me having changed that setting as far as I recall), but it needs a moment of pressed not just a click like when tapping the screen which would be nice. Am I missing something?
Hi! So I’ve been using the LUMIX S5 II to film a short film. It’s crazy good but the auto focus is pretty… unreliable. The camera can’t seem to detect what to focus on and constantly blurs and unblurs? I was wondering if you had any advise as to why this is? I’m filming in v-log and in a woodland. But it’s incredibly difficult to see how dark the image is (which is what I think the problem is) and how to make sure the lens has enough light without creating artificial noise. Any advise?
I am thinking of buying the s5ii, but I am clueless on what lens I should buy for it. The shot at 5:39 looks good, what lens are you using for that one ?
hi bro thanks you. i have the s5iix zone (horizonta\vertical) mode canceled. How can you activate it ? Only in M mode does taking pictures work, and it's ugly on the screen. The S5 does not have this problem. I will rejoice in repentance. Thanks
Hey Josh, Ive encountered an issue. When I clicked the joystick button or long press it, the assign menu doesnt pop like yours. So I used Fn button set from menu and assigned it the way you showed. I am still not able to get the focus box with one click, what Ive noticed is that Ive to long press it for few seconds before I could see the box. Is my joystick button broken? What is the solution for this?
I have the feeling that te he next Panasonic S5 II X, will have full frame 4k 60p, and Aps-c 4k 120p with the new AF and sounds, and a fullfram FHD 150p with the old AF, lastly FHD 240p. What do you think guys?
What would’ve happened if you kept moving the camera in the tracking shot? Will it start hunting or stay at the current distance? How’s the tracking with fast moving objects when AF speed is maxed out? I’m shooting dance videos and track props or dancers shoes in the shot.
Good afternoon, please tell me what mode to shoot if there are 5 people and all of them should be in focus, for example, at a wedding, bride and friends
Hey Josh, great video - as always. Quick question. What setting would you use when shooting a car? I took a couple of shots yesterday but the S5II lost focus on some of them (pull-outs). They were totally unusable. It was set to AF-C full area. I manually set the focus point for close ups - that worked fine. Guess I need to dial in my AF settings a bit more. I’m using the Sigma 24-70. Thanks man.
I'd say maybe use the tracking mode, and select the car as your subject before shooting. Or, I'd use single point - that way the camera only looks at a specific part of the frame to acquire focus and may make the results more consistent. Hope this helps!
Does it have any "locked on" capability like Sony's AF system? For example, say you're following a subject that's walking through trees. Is there a setting that will hold focus on the subject as trees pass in the foreground of the shot? Tracking mode maybe?
Great video!!! On my S5ii the 1-area+ I can enlarge or reduce by only 1 step, instead on 1-area I can enlarge and reduce without limitations. It's a normal behaviour or it's an issue of my camera? Thanks
At 4:47 do you know how to engage the "lock" in the bottom right corner and what exactly that does in tracking mode? Cant seem to get it to do anything.
What is the highest res and framerate does tracking work on? Wouldnt it be cool to ad zones and set fn buttons for wich zone you want. Better yet touch fn buttons w clean hdmi on the Atomos screen .THANK YOU
Hello, I bought a new 5II yesterday, how can I set the video to 6k, I only see 4K mov or mp4 in the video setting, no 6K displayed, I would be very grateful for your help, maybe a link from youtube or .. ... Best regards
Would it be possible to test the autofocus in FHD. The S5II seems to only use the old autofocus of the S5 instead of both systems working together resulting in poor autofocus in FHD. Thanks
Great video, although i've been playing around with the S&Q modes and the 1080p50 modes. I found that these seem much slower to AF than 4k25, 4k60 or apsc modes. I wonder if this is a feature or an issue as it seems odd that 4k can AF better than 1080p. Have you discovered this?
@@khoriass4005 no mention on the Panasonic website. Seems full readout is 30p, aps-C is 60p PDAF, after that, DFD up to 120, manual after that I feel Panasonic should have mentioned this, as even the X-S10 has aps-C 240p with PDAF
@Josh cameron - I'm not sure if my version has a bug, but when I plug in an HDMI cable and connect it to a monitor, the detection modes(Human, eye/face) disappear. This seems to be isolated to when recording in 5.9K can you confirm if this is happening on your end?
Hey josh I am getting this camera for a number of reasons and I unfortunately cannot wait till May for the X version despite the intra recording being a big benefit if I need to shoot for broadcast. Have you done much with raw output? I hear that work flow is a mess?
The workflow with RAW on the S5 isn't a mess at all, I actually find it really streamlined, especially if you're editing in FCPX. ProRes is just such a nice codec to edit with :)
Not at all :) I haven't noticed a difference in battery life depending on AF settings. The things likely to drain your battery the most would be EVF/LCD brightness, Rec Quality settings and fan settings etc
Is it true that the S5II is only able to use contrast detect AF in 1080 ??? Check this test. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dEpmUfyESRc.html If so I will cancel my order
@@JoshCameron looking forward to it and also the wobble issues too when comes to wide/super wide angle lens. understand the lens built for DFD system but it can be fix by firmware most likely right?
