Pavlich is freos best ever player, so fyfe won two brownlows, so what !! He gets the ball and usually turns it over, lots of Wasted possessions.. i noticed a long time ago that Freo usually win when he dosent play as he always seems to get injured, fyfe is completely overrated. and Ben cousins dident win a premiership in 2005, it was 2006 research your facts better..!!
If you were to include Fitzroy, Hayden Bunton stats were simply incredible. He won 3 brownlows in just 119 games. And the only player in history to achieve at least 1 Brownlow vote per game. He also won 3 Sandover medals when he played in the WA comp. The only player to win 3 Sandovers and 3 Brownlows. He also a highly regarded cricketer that had the potential to play test cricket. Your list is pretty much perfect in my view although I would definitely swap cousins for Judd. Judd was significantly the best in the comp for some time while wearing the blue and yellow.
Yeah i forgot to include Fitzroy, but if i did Bunton would've been a lock for that spot. Yeah it was difficult for me to decide between Judd and Cousins, but chose Cousins because he's a good bloke lol.
As a Collingwood supporter I'd have to put Syd Coventry, Gordon Coventry, Harry Collier, Albert Collier, Bob Rose and possibly Lou Richards ahead of the great Nathan Buckley. I also think Haydn Bunton should be considered the best player for the Brisbane Lions. It is a merged club after all. Coleman is a good choice for Essendon but I favour Dick Reynolds over Coleman. Similarly, I feel that Jack Dyer or Royce Hart should be considered Richmond's best. Other than those alterations it was a great list that I largely agree with. Good job.
Pavlich over Fyfe, a absolute champion & like Rooey from my team the Saints. Pav did everything he could to win a flag 4 his club, then again many champions have walked away with out a flag. I'd check on Lethal Leigh as well because lm sure you said 1 all Australian on his resume. The best player lve seen has more than one or they weren't handing them out through his career. There are to many greats to rank especially since we will never see them play ever. I love Lou Richards, but Buckley & the rest someone named like Bobby Rose leave Lou behind. Buckley's kicking puts him in the pies top 5 with Pendles, Scott it's a absolute pleasure to watch you play champion 👍
@@rahulbhatia7798 Coleman's impact on the game is more and I considered Dick Reynolds for this spot as well as James Hird. In my opinion either can be interchanged here
Comparing Coleman to Hudson is like splitting hairs. Generally players are rated on how dominant they are in their eras compared their contemporaries. Coleman played in a much lower scoring era, the game was played differently in his era compared to Hudson. Both outstanding and legendary players of course but the differences being in Hudson's era, many players were kicking tonnes, hence he won the league goalkeeping award 4 times in 7 years, compared to Coleman 5 times in 5 full seasons. The other difference is that Coleman had not hit his peak at the time of his injury, it was only his 6th season in senior football, compared to Huddo retiring in about his 10th senior season (having played several seasons in Tasmania's highest league). Many of those who saw Coleman play rate him the best they ever saw & by a fair margin, but again. As I said, like splitting hairs, you would probably rate them equal, easily both legends.
@@joememphis1571 Probaby even way more than that. In 1993, he kicked 124 goals in 17 games.. at the ripe old age of 32, imagine what he would have been doing in his mid 20s
@@taxads7791 What is even more unique is that Gary Ablett holds the record of goals per game for a non-specialist forward with 3.6 goals per game as he alternated between the half forward flank and wing in the early years of his career.
@@joememphis1571 Freak, best player I ever saw by a long way. Could do anything, dominated games in the middle and up forward. Sad that he didn't get to celebrate a premiership unfortunately.
Really good effort. For Essendon though I'd say Dick Reynolds. For Richmond maybe Royce Hart, but Martins GF records do put him in the picture. The rest are pretty good, and obviously on a topic like this people are always going to have differing opininions. Good job.
Not going to argue that Ben Cousins was one of West Coasts greatest players along with Chris Judd. But being apart of a few West Coast groups and having these debates and discussions. Peter Matera rates right up there. Infact as far as gutsy freakishly good things on a football field, take into consideration the VFL became the AFL and no Victorian wanted an Interstate side winning their Cup. Roo helped win 2 of them and a Norm Smith medal in the early days of AFL were Geelong in particular found out, trying continually to take his head off and team mates, was a mistake that had a reverse effect. Lol if the rules back then were like today there'd of been 12 players out for 6 weeks from 1 GF.
Buddy Franklin will go down as the best modern day forward that I had ever seen and I’m a fan of Tony Lockett, Gary Ablett Snr, Jason Dunstall, Wayne Carey, Matthew Lloyd and Matthew Richardson.
@Lats Niebling In my humble opinion, Buddy will be the final player to kick 800, 900 or 1000 goals, the last to kick 100 goals in a home and away season and the last player to average 3 goals per game.
Lockett is the greatest player in vfl/afl history.. I mean it not just about kicking straight, reading the play brute strength, intimidation, he also laid off so many balls to his team mates to kick truly.. he won brownlow, all Australian jumpers, The best defenders in history just couldn't stop him.., just an awesome power forward to watch..!!
@@elmerfudd6305 He was a powerhouse and very strong to boot no pun intended. Had he not missed parts of four years, he would've had 1500 goals for sure.
When it comes to Brisbane's Michael Voss and his early career when Brisbane were known as the Bears, you might want to do a video that looks at Brisbane's run into the 1995 Finals and how they needed to win 6 of their final 7 games just to make their first Finals appearance. That could be worth looking into as I remember it as the stuff of Legends how it turned a team that was a Laughing Stock into a well developed team that went on to merge with the Fitzroy Lions the following year saving the Lion's legacy.
....from 50 years as a fan. Carlton - Impossible to choose between Jezza and Hunter so a Tie. Collingwood- Daicos was an absolute Freak. Essendon - Wanganeen or Hird....another difficult choice. Fitzroy- Garry Wilson Footscray- Doug Hawkins Geelong- Gazza Hawthorn - Mattwews Melbourne- Flower was incredible. North - Blight. South- Goodes Richmond- KB St Kilda - Winmar, but only just from Barker Eagles - Lewis or Mainwearing. Crows - Jarman and McLeod are both in the Top 10 best players I've seen.
*THE FINALISTS* Andrew mcleod Michael voss John nicholls Nathan buckley John coleman Nathan fyfe (current) Gary ablett sr Gary ablett jr Toby greene(current) Leigh matthews Ron barassi Wayne carey Warren tredrea Dustin martin (current) Tony lockett Bob skilton Ben cousins Ted whitten
Great video. Sure not all I agree with, but you did give sound reasoning. You did however miss out on how the Bears and Lions were a merger which overlooks the magnificent Paul Ross of Fitzroy and many more as at least an Honourable mention. Secondly, controversial but I'd put Doull or Silvani ahead of Sticks.
Good video Bro. Wayne Carey was probably the best player ever let alone at North Melbourne.Malcolm Blight was also good at North.Warren Tredrea was best at Port and Robbie Gray second.Nathan Buckley best at Collingwood and close call with Daicos and Pendeleberry
Darren Jarman is the best player the crow's ever had. Who else in the history of the AFL VFL ever kicked 5 goals in the final quarter of a grand final. He's the only one I know of. Jr Ablett doesn't come near his father as a player. You mustn't know about Petter Hudson from Hawthorn. Kicked 150 goals in 1971. Was a superstar. You need to google him. Kevin Bartlett is still Richmond's best player. Cousin's also played for Richmond. Just giving you my opinion. These are good video's. I subscribed . Why don't you do best kicks for goal. Peter McKenna has to be number one and I'm a Richmond supporter.🎉🎉🎉
Agreed. Jackovich and Peter Matera were better than Cousins. Both 2 x premiership players. Jackovich was a mountain down back, and Matera was class throughout his whole career.
What do Gary Ablett snr Nathan Buckley Tony Lockett Nat Fyfe Matthew Richardson have in common They never won a Grand Final but all are considered greats
Adelaide: Mark Ricciuto Brisbane: Michael Voss Carlton: Chris Judd Collingwood: Nathan Buckley Essendon: James Hird Fremantle: Nat Fyfe Geelong: Gary Ablett Sr Gold Coast: Gary Ablett Jr GWS: Callan Ward Hawthorn: Leigh Matthews Melbourne: Ron Barrassi North Melbourne: Wayne Carey Port Adelaide: Warren Tredrea Richmond: Dustin Martin St Kilda: Robert Harvey Sydney: Tony Lockett West Coast: Ben Cousins Western Bulldogs: Ted Whitten
Wayne Carey was the ultimate centre half forward. He could notch 20 to 25 disposals per game and in the same contest, kick five or six goals. Best contested mark for a man of his size that I had seen.
Hird is in the top 5 at Essendon but I don't think he's their greatest. Dick Reynolds has 2 more Brownlows and Coleman changed the game. Don't forget you have to fit Simon Maddan in there too as he was a fantastic player. Edit: I almost forgot Bill Hutchison. He has to be top 5 too.
@@dansharp2860 yeah Essendon are a tough one to pick Reynolds, Coleman, Hird and even Matty Lloyd were who I mulled over I guess I just have recency bias. Dick Reynolds and John Coleman are hall of fame legends after all .
What is not mentioned here is that Andrew McLeod was originally a Port Adelaide player in the local SANFL league. Should have been playing for Port Power when they entered the AFL in 1997.
Nope, he was pre selected for Freo in 1994 but Neesham didn't like something about Mcleod's physical appearance (earnings, tattoos) so he was traded to Adelaide for Chris Groom.
@@crutches111 That’s clearly not the case, commonly rated as the best player of all time. Him and Gary Ablett Senior both are clearly more remembered for on field
Judd > Cousins. Judd is regarded one of the greatest ever midfielders to ever play the game, meanwhile Cousins was hooked on drugs, no idea if he was on enhancing ones as well. Who bloody knows.
Certainly show your youthful bias, I am a carlton supporter but seen Gary Ablett snr play live dozens of times, he is the best player I have seen play over my 54 years!! Maybe you weren't lucky enough to see him play?
Pavlich is better than Fyfe (Aside from brownlow arguement which is a mids award anyway) Pavlich is an elite position player forward or back, an elite kick of ball (unlike Fyfe) Better leader than Fyfe. More impact. Sorry but at this time Pavlich
@@redtiger4352 Pavlich has never had enough recognition in the East as he should have been given. He was a great player who did much of his best work away from Melbourne so we missed it or ignored it because we know we're too old VFL club focused. It's a pity and he's definitely their best ever player.
This is a very subjective list. Many players, not mentioned could quite easily be on it. It’s a bit like picking the best artist, singer, or actor. Statistics don’t always show who the “best” is!
Williams was better than Silvangni... SOS was only fractionally better than Chris Langford (some say Chris was equal or better - he was more like Rance, SOS was more lockdown).
@@petriusmaximus8187 Silvagni was a good as you can get playing one-on-one. Better than Diesel? IDK Langford had that Rance quality.. had the rebounding run like David Dench
It's always interesting when someone says they think Gary Ablett Junior was the better player. Often they're letting Ablett Snr personal life bias their view and also never actually saw him play live. As someone who been at the games watching both playing at their absolute peak, sorry there is just no debate. Ablett senior was simply more skillful, explosive, exhilarating and most of all unstoppable then his son. If you think stats and decorations are what decide the better player you don't really understand why people watch football. Junior was great, but we've had quite a few champions like him (superb midfielders) over the years. There has only ever been one Gary Ablett Snr.
agree, god was astounding; although to have his son in a serious conversation about this is remarkable. god's run off the flank and his fierceness at the ball allied to his freak marking and goal tally edge him over jesus. amazingly, i rekkun if nathan had either his dad's or brother's passion to play he might have eclipsed both! that said, polly farmer was a step up again and perhaps one of the greatest players ever - how could he be overlooked???
Ablett Snr. kicked 586 goals in 161 games and he holds the record for the highest goals per game average for a non-specialist forward with 3.6 goals per game as he was a wingman-half forward flanker. The last 81 games of his career he kicked 444 goals in 81 games averaging 5.5 goals per game at full forward and he is the only player to win the Coleman Medal and kick 100 goals three straight seasons.
He often looked like he was a man playing against boy's. I've never seen a player look as dominant on the field as Ablett senior and I'm a tiger supporter 🎉🎉
And I would also put Selwood now above Abblett Snr. Also imo if Jr had stayed a Cat he'd shaded the ol' man also. Tough being ''God'', aint it? Farmer v Selwood, now that is a hard one for the diehard Cat fan to decide. Farmer greatest Ruckman to have played in Mexico. Stephen Michael greatest Ruckman to have played in W.A.
John Nicholls was a highly influential player at Carlton but he’s simply not the best player the club has produced and indeed wasn’t the best player in his team when he was playing. Alex Jesaulenko was clearly the premier player of his era and the best player the club has has produced.
Even Leigh Matthews had said that “Alex Jesaulenko was the Buddy Franklin of his era. He had sensational overhead and wondrous balance on the ground and in the air.”
So many wrong picks.. Dick Reynolds is easily the greatest ever bomber and arguably the best of any team. He not only won 3 brownlows but captain / coached the team too. John Coleman was sensational but his career was cut short. Dick Reynolds therefore had a better career.
Not really "so many wrong picks". Reynolds is the only real standout mistake. Coleman was a strange pick though considering he didn't even play 100 games, and Essendon has had so many great players.
If you’re going to include Coleman as the Essendon greatest then you have completely misunderstood that Russell Ebert is far and away the greatest Port player ever.
Essendon themselves don't rate Coleman as their greatest. Dick Reynolds was named the clubs greatest player in 2002. He does have 3 Brownlows, 4 premierships and 7 club B&Fs and he wasn't even an honourable mention. Dick himself saw Coleman play and said he wasn't the best player, Bill Hutchison (2x Brownlow winner with the club)was better than both them.
@@-hobbit-9481 you are so misinformed, or just yet another intentionally wrong idiot. The PAFC was established in 1870. They played in the SANFL from 1877 until 1996. They then switched their first team to the AFL and have played there since. Russell Ebert played for this club. A new club was invented on 1997, the Port Adelaide Magpies Football Club. They played in the SANFL from 1997 to 2010.
@@hedonismunderstands2469 Polly was unique, wonderful and electrifying with his handball skills and he had a raking left foot which made his stab passes more accurate.
@Lats Niebling From 1984 to 1992, Ablett Sr. kicked 586 goals in 161 games as a half forward flanker and wingman. From 1993 to 1996, he kicked 444 goals in 81 games averaging 5.5 goals per game.
@Lats Niebling Thank you kindly. Here’s a kicker, no pun intended, I’m from America and I’ve been watching Australian rules football for nearly 30 years when they would show it on ESPN at 4.00 AM Saturday morning. It’s one of the best sports in the world.
I've seen them both play and I think that Jr is a more complete player than his father but Sr was a much better forward/half-forward. If I had 1st pick in the playground I take prime Jr over prime Sr and especially if we're playing more modern era rules and style. Sr was great tho don't get me wrong.
@@MakeItRainProd it was a great list. Only meant as a small critique and not a knock on the overall video. Not sure if you meantioned dunstall either. As you indicated there's definitely been a huge number of champions that have played for that club so you could definitely argue that neither would make the list. Cheers
That is not a list of the best players of all time. It is a list of the best players in your opinion since 1950 with most being since 1960. Picking a best player in the AFL means only players since 1990 as that is when the AFL started. It was the VFL before that.
Talk about kicking a team when their down, honorable mentions for North should of gone to Keith Grieg, dual Brownlow medalist, Boomer Harvey, all time games record holder, Glenn Archer, Shinboner of the Century or Todd Goldstein, all time hit outs redord holder.
You lost me when you said that Coleman has the best goalkicking average in VFL/AFL history. That honorific belongs to Peter Hudson. Also, Cousins played in the 2006 winning premiership, not 2005. Buckley never played in a premiership team, which takes him out of the running at the first hurdle. As I wrote in another of your videos, it's Albert Collier as best player at Collingwood, and quite possibly the best player ever.
@@azzaprime7257 On any merit that any person makes a statement like that. Who can really say who was the best player ever? It's an opinion, going on Mr Collier's record, that I have made. It can't be refuted, it is an opinion, and as such is inviolate, just as your opinion, if you have one, on who you think the greatest player of all time, is. Six premierships, three B&Fs, I think, one Brownlow, one Leitch Medal when he went to play in Tasmania for more money (it was during the depression). Only one player has a better record, and that is Michael Tuck, with his seven premierships, but he could never be classed as the greatest. He was a great journeyman, a very consistent player for many years, part of an amazing club that had so much success. Personally, from those players I have actually seen play, I would go with Wayne Carey. Hope that clears it up for you.
I'd revisit your Hawthorn list, but admittedly they have a huge amount of greats, possibly the hardest team to pick as some of their 2nd stringer greats were better than a lot of other clubs best player. Agree with Leigh Matthews, and Hodge & Mitchell arguably deserve a mention, Burgoyne probably not. I'd be mentioning Peter Hudson, Jason Dunstall, Shane Crawford and maybe Buddy Franklin before Burgoyne and possibly some of them before Hodge & Mitchell...tough calls to make though. You could almost make separate vids for some teams.
I find difficult to have pick only one from most clubs but Hawthorn particularly aswell . Aswell as those mentioned a few more names I think worthy of the discussion are Platten & Tuck
