Most of them were fugly...old Genta rehashed designs, dodgy pink dials & a "not at all mountainy" sacrilegious blue Alpinist...& I prefer the 5KX to the over hyped skx too. 😳... My favourites? The Oris & the new Bond Omega (surprised that didn't get a mention!) as well as some excellent microbrand pieces--Chris Ward springs to mind. Good episode, Happy Xmas 👍🏻🎅🏻
I started collecting watches in 2019. I ended up getting a Hamilton Khaki Mechanical and a Boldr Venture because of your reviews and comments. I hope 2020 will be a fantastic year for you and the channel. Thanks Thomas Johnson
Really don’t understand the Seiko 5kx hate. I mean, maybe you hav to have a screw down crown and a sapphire crystal but for me, I jut didn’t care. I got the blackout 5 for $185 and it looks great. I have Orients that tick the SKX box, I just don’t get the need to diminish a watch for not having ISO certification, a screw down crown, and a sapphire. My favorite Seiko has none of those things (SNZG15).
Agree, had an skx & think it's a seriously over rated watch--good 20 years ago maybe but the 5kx IMHO is better in every way (after all any diver worth his salt uses a dive computer not a wind up obsolete watch anyway). 👍🏻👍🏻
Couldn’t agree more with this comment. Most of us won’t go diving to 200 meters and if we did I’m sure skx wouldn’t be the best choice watch for me. With a entry level watch I feel that this hit all expectations including having the 100 meters and also have a great automatic reliable movement.
There's nothing wrong with new Seiko 5's, they are nice looking watches. The problem i have is them being called the new SKX. The SKX is a ISO diver, these Seiko 5's are not, so by definition they can not be it's replacement, that's it really. It doesn't matter if most ppl don't use the SKX for diving, that's what it is, and it can be used for that. The Seiko 5's can't. I don't think ppl hate the watches themselves.
Totally agree. I love my SKX, but I'd also love to own one of the new "5KX" models. I don't even shower wearing a watch, let alone approach anywhere close to scuba diving depths. 100 meters without a screw down crown is just fine for me.
hameed N.B for sure, they’re creeping up. It’s only a matter of time before these channels realize orient is becoming the best value for entry level automatics.
I don’t know if you’ll see this since i’m so late to the game but seriously sir... you are the MOST funniest and best watch youtuber. Anyone who argues can get it.
The Casioak is for me just too amazing. It's beautiful and affordable, which you know, being able to buy it without breaking the bank is a great thing.
The new seiko 5s are great. Who really needs 200m WR, threaded crown as well. I mean they did the modding work for you and they look great and have good quality. You can swim with the watch and its durable enough. I think its gone in the right direction offering 27 different styles with different bracelet options. And Seiko is smart, this is how you actually get people into the hobby; offer a caseback to showcase a movement, has a 4r, I've seen them in person and damn the mesh bracelet with the red dial is amazing. Yeah and i can get the discounted and cheaper then the skx. Hella i would recommend anyone to get them over the skx.
@@gonshocks let the snobs say what they want, pretty much the main question is, do you need 200m water resist, if you do get yourself a promaster, orient diver or seiko turtle or samurai at the price. Can Get them same price as the skx so far. If not these seiko 5s are amazing. Enjoy the watch.
Great video Jory. You'll be at one hundred thousand subscribers in no time. 2019 was the year that I became addicted to watches and it's all uphill from here.
I just bought my first Orient watch a tristar automatic , it just arrived yesterday , very nice and I also bought a Q Timex which will show up in the mail any day now , yippee ! Merry Christmas everybody !
This is your first video that I saw and I'm hooked! You have a new subscriber! Happy New Year and take it easy, don't let those "5kx"s mess with your blood preasure in 2020 😊
@@thetimeteller Thnx! And WOW this is really cool! I mean, you actually took the time to like my comment and welcome me to the channel. That says a lot :) Btw, I'm binge-watching your videos... I'm having a blast! :D
I don't understand Grand Seiko pricing, it's very very misleading. It's called "A Grand Seiko" but you cannot get a GS for a grand; as you say they cost closer to 5 grand, so the name should be "Five Grand Seiko".
The problem I see with the 5KX is that it went backwards in one important core aspect, the 200M water resistance. It gave us the second hand hacking and crown winding which most users can and have lived without. I may only go 60M deep but will not feel as secure with a 100M rated watch compared to using a 200M rated one. And Seiko raised the price! The 4R36 movement cost twice as much as the 7S26 but is still less than half the price of the cost increase in the new 5KX watches. The loss of the 200M rating does not seem justified. I have and will get Turtles and Samurais for less than the 5KX's.
10:04 OH MY GOD ... praise the editor, I almost died of laughter. I'd love a new Alpinist and don't even mind the X on the dial, but for $700 I don't think the huge price difference is worth the somewhat small changes Seiko made to the Alpinist. I think I'll just get a refurb or old stock for $275-$400 and call it a day. Just saw my first Alpinist in the wild the other day and WOW, what a gorgeous watch. Usually don't like gold at all on a watch but it just works with the green dial. Really, really well.
Hate seiko 5kx, as for the Tudor I hated that as well...at first. It’s too big for me with that lug to lug but they did something unique and absolutely tool worthy with heritage. I don’t think they thought it would be a big seller, this is a niche product.
Great video jory as per usual, I look forward to many more I. 2020. Thank you time teller for all you do. Merry Christmas and a very happy and healthy new year.
...i have the dual-time bezel variant...good feel and weight...ceramic bezel, sapphire crystal, handwind/hack, bracelet,all upgrade over SKX, of which i own/love 2; LIW v good value-for-money, imo...
Great end of the year wrap up, Jor. Up the Likes! Oh, and PS, if you find a few mins to spare, I sent you an email a while back asking for a suggestion on watch repair. Thanks, keep the vids coming into the new year! HNY~
Dude, wait until 40. Seriously though, I wish you a happy Chanukah. I've really enjoyed watching a fellow Angeleno watch lover! I wish you the best in 2020! Maybe I'll see you at Lunasia one of these days.
When are people going to realize the new seiko 5 does not replace the old skx it replaces the old seiko 5. When compared to the old seiko 5 you realize it is better in every way.
I have purchased many new Seiko 5's with the same specs as the new 5KX for close to one third the price. When making a new iteration of a product, it should be as good or better in all aspects of the previous model's specifications.
I just bought the Tudor Black Bay P01 from an AD, and honestly, at the beginning when I saw the picture, I hated it. However, it looks a lot nicer on the wrist, the movement has a 70hrs power reserve, and it is different, it is also the history of the prototype etc.. etc...at least for me.
I'm curious to know why you disliked the Seiko 5 Sports range. I'd very much like to hear your insights on them. I got it as a gift this Christmas and I absolutely love it (blue dial model, SRPD51K1). It it and was my first mechanical, automatic watch, the first from a serious brand, and I'm delighted by it. It's made from some very nice materials, it looks the part and I consider it versatile, I could take it on a dive (even though I probably never will) and I don't really have to worry about its quality. I understand it is below the SKX7 but I've heard mostly very positive feedback about this watch, that I think Seiko hopes to serve newbie customers like me to this world. Hoping to get a presage very very soon!
Happy New Year Jory. Reckon 2020 is your 100k subs year n you deserve it. Yep....Orient not on the list yet but i see it coming. Thanks to you I'm on my 8th watch loving my hobby and now I've just got a Turtle Pepsi...didnt need it but I got it anyway. Your a legend Jory. Go hard or go home...your going hard Jory. Excellent channel.
Thanks so much for the words of positivity! I couldn’t get this far without you. I honestly do have the best viewers. 2020 is going to be a huge year for the channel!! Enjoy your Turtle 🐢 !! -Jory
I noticed several of the trends you talked about, and I agree completely. It’s an interesting thing to watch the watch threads over the past couple years. It’s funny how quick the trends move. Are the following us, or are we following them???
My favory Watches 2019 -Glashutte Original SeaQ -Carl F Bucherer Heritage Bicompax -Certina DS PH200M -Marathon GPM -Omega Seamaster 300 Green -Bell&Ross BR 05 The most horror watch: -Seiko 5 sport ....
On point with the line up Jory. I love TUDOR and also felt like saying.. What happened TUDOR??! You gave us an SKX and Drew that from you heritage some how. Wow. Why? I would have been happy with a Submariner heritage line at this point. TUDOR get it right! Release something that we will like. Ask a poll of watch tubers or something in a private meeting design room. Please. (Edited typos due to rant typing lol)
Great 2019 wrap up. Entertaining as always. Great year for me. Added several of your favorites to my collection. Oris, Hamilton, Seiko, Seagull 1963, etc. Also added a few vintage Omegas. And grew tremendously as an amateur/hobbyist watchmaker. In particular, with the vintage Omegas.
Not so sure - I tried one on the other day and the fit is actually really good and it looks very Bell & Ross. Also, Bell & Ross does lots of designs based on older watches and no one has a problem with it so I’m a bit confused why the hate. Also it feels completely differently - I tried it on then an AP and holy shit are they different watches. They are also selling very well, so I’m not sure the brand is suffering. Maybe just your relationship with it...
I'm not a fan of salmon dials. It's a color you expect on hospital scrubs, not expensive watches. I agree on those Seiko non-dive watches. The Elegance Spring drives are really nice. Seiko picks a color and commits to it. No salmon there. I have mixed feelings on the Prospex line. My main issue is that they should have branded them as Grand Seiko and finished them to the same level considering they are the same price as the very similar Grand Seiko versions of those watches. You should have left AP out and included Bulgari with their Octo Finissimo line since that's what the Royal Oak should have evolved into rather than the bloated, chunky, horribly proportioned parodies of their original design. Oh wait, AP could have been mentioned since their 11:59 certainly belongs on list of worst watches.
Wow, the Hamilton, khaki field Murph , didn't make the list . It was a huge release , people were calling for it for years. Shame to have left that one off . To many watches that are out of reach of the common man .
Eco drive minute repeater perpetual calendar with alarm and calibre 9000 - affordable equivalent. The cost of owning a holy trinity, obviously not your concern.
The best watch of 2019 has got to be the one that Patek Philippe made to raise money for muscular dystrophy. It was a 1 of 1 watch that literally says "the only one" on it and it auctioned for 31 million Swiss francs. Rich people love their Patek Philippes. That's like wearing the GDP of a small country on your wrist.
Blue Alpinist and the SKX. Anyone else tired of the BS Seiko is pulling? They are screwing the customer base and people are moving on. Long Island Watch is making the "SKX" with all the upgrades that Seiko left off all these years, sapphire crystal and NH36 movement.
tortugabob But NOT ISO certified, if that matters to you. Also, someone has pointed out that the “ Islander” is essentially a Heimdallr watch, ie a Chinese watch homage, if not indeed a Heimdallr , but with a different dial.
The new Seiko 5 isn’t a replacement for the SKX. An assertion created purely by some in the watch community but never claimed by Seiko. The new 5 series has better movement, looks great and has very attainable street price. The anger and hate seems artificial. Great theatrics though... lol
You forgot two of the best Seikos I`ve ever seen, the Pressage Arita porcelain, and the Grand Seiko Snowflake, and you didn`t mention the less innovative watch of the 2019, the Chopard Eagle Alpinist, but great video anyway
@@thetimeteller y Your right, my mistake, but the Arita appears this year ( I'm big fan of porcelain and emanel dials, as much you are fan of salmon dials)
I’m 70 and I’ll kick anybody’s ass on RU-vid if I didn’t have arthritis, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pre-diabetes, and .........etc. Just watch me.
I understand why you don't like some of the watches on here but the A. Lange & Sohne Odysseus is gorgeous. I know it costs about as much as a new car so I won't be getting one but it is a really beautiful watch so a weird watch to hate on. I thought you would include that expensive automatic Shinola watch you did not like.
