I started with their glue on traditional heads 35 years ago. Their Black Hornet Ser Razor is one of my favorites now. For an economically priced head, I don’t think there’s any better.
@@gsnicholas8522 I agree with you on the Black Hornet Ser Razor, it’s probably my all time favorite head. I’ll be running them and the new Single Bevel Buzzcut this year. In my opinion it’s damn hard to beat a Magnus. American made, using American materials and labor and their lifetime replacement guarantee is possibly the best in the industry.
@@keystonestatebowmen3128 yep. The only thing I'll use besides a Magnus is one of the machined tool steel heads. I have Tuffhead's to go along with the Magnus.
Jack, I am certain that there are many great reasons to call you an idiot however, none of those were because of this post content. Thank for the info. Enjoy your season! 🏹🦌😎
Im using the Swhacker hybrids, best of both worlds, at least 4 cuts, 2 of which can be huge slices. Having the bleeder blades helps to keep the opening from clotting up as easy. I have been lucky to always get a pass through.
QAD exodus are probably the most durable broadheads on the market, shoot well, penetration is top notch, and they are still affordable. I see no reason to switch to another fixed blade. Huge craze to run the Iron will style heads these days but the exodus leave a massive triangular hole leaving crazy blood trails.
I shot a doe with a QAD Exodus this past Saturday at 30 yards. Went through her, hit the tree behind her, and bounced back. Unfortunately, after 400 yards and over 7 hours of searching, I couldn't find her. They hit about two inches low of field points at 60 yards, which I attribute to drag. It wasn't the broadheads fault I didn't find that deer.
Great video as usual. I have never shot the Magnus broad heads but they do seem to be great quality. I have used the Slick Trick and QAD as well as Shwacker. When everything goes right you can’t beat the expandables, but I prefer the reliability of the fixed blades
Thank you for putting this video together. I am in the middle of a Victory VAP Elite .166 to Easton XX75 Gamegetter in 2317 experiment. Still trying to figure out a broadhead to tip my 2317s for Wisconsin whitetails. Thank you for the fine content.
If you’re like a lower draw weight hunter consider fixed blade heads. Tried and true no failures to deploy whining. Like the Magnus Black Hornets or Slick Trick line. I’ve taken a lot of critters of many sizes with both at 62#’s, 28” DL. If you have your bow & arrow tuned together these heads will hit behind your pin easily to 80 yards +. Great advice here Nate! BUY AMERICAN!
This myth that mechanicals don’t deploy it’s been long repaired and debunked man… it’s old news , water under the bridge , but low poundage should always shoot fixed blade
I've used a lot of different broadhead through the years fixed and mechanicals. Swhacker #207 2 inch cut has been the best broadhead I've ever used, accurate and always an exit for me, many deer down and quick.
Since going to the Swhacker #207 (100 gr. 2” cut) 8 years ago I’ve had great blood trails, pinpoint accuracy and mostly pass throughs. For some unknown reason, I even had a head not deploy at all and that 8 point still only went 20 yards and tipped over with only a 1” entrance and exit hole.
Shot NAP killzones for long time and love them! Switched to Sevr titanium 1.75” and am equally impressed. I like the killzones for their retention and no rubber bands. I like the sevr for durability, penetration and the set screw that makes each head a practice head.
I agree with your line up completely! I prefer a 4-blade fixed over a 2 or 3 blade fixed. If I did try a 3-blade fixed, it would be the QAD Exodus. If I tried a mechanical, it would be the Grim Reaper. As I got older & dropped my poundage to 60 pounds, I decided to go with the Slick Trick Viper Tricks. I like the angle of the blades for penetration over the other Slick Tricks (although none are bad). A tiny Slick Trick 4-blade, 1" Standard has the same total cut (1" + 1" = 2") as a two-blade, 2" Swhacker, which still has 1" blades flying through the air. Slick Trick & QAD Exodus have short ferrules that match better with field points. If I end up shooting a crossbow some day, my plan is to explore the Grim Reaper line up. If I was starting over from scratch, I might have gone the Magnus route. I'm quite content with my Viper Tricks for my current set up, however. Slick Trick, Magnus, QAD, & Grim Reaper would get my money. This is coming from someone who shot 3-blade Muzzy broadheads for decades .
I love Schwacker. It's is the head that convinced me to go down the trail that lead to using fixed blades. 3 deer shot with them. One a gut shot, one a near perfect double lung not hitting shoulder (the only one I recovered) and another that may have hit shoulder. None of them passed through and none had a blood trail to speak of. I shoot plenty to get a pass through so when I didn't get one on the gut shot, I researched and landed on Magnus black hornet. I've been super sold on the results so far.
Thanks for the video! Great as always. I just picked up a pack of the Levi Morgan Swhackers. Supposed to be a bit stronger than the original and the curved blades are supposed to aid in penetration. They look pretty sweet! Hopefully we get to put them to the test in a few weeks down here in NC!
I'm trying to decide between the mega meat or the dead meat.I'm using a sixty pound bow so i'm leaning maybe towards the dead meat. First time hunting.
You pretty much nailed my short list. Fixed: Magnus black hornet Slicktrick mag over the standard for me. Magnus Stinger Mechanical Grim Reapers 3 blade Grim Reapers 4 blade I would substitute a NAP Killzone in place of your shwacker. I've heard how that broadhead has gone downhill, but I killed a pile of whitetails with that head before I made the decision to go with a fixed blade.
Exodus are fantastic. I'm taking the swept version on my elk hunt to Colorado this fall. The Grim Reaper Hades and Micro Hades are also fantastic heads. I would prefer the Micro Hades 4 blade over the slick trick all day every day.
Just bought some black hornets a few weeks ago. Gonna try em on a hog soon. I got some NAP endgame and they are nasty too. Annihilators are excellent. Always keep one in the quiver...
I ran the 100 grain 2 inch swhackers for years and brought a lot of meat home. Last year I switched to the tooth of the arrow fixed heads and wow what a hole. 4 blade solids you should check them out Nate 👍🏻👍🏻
Slick tricks are my go-to broadhead when all else fails, very accurate and durable. QAD Exodus are a reliable option as well. I like being able to buy replacement blades at local shops.
I like that Slick Magnum (2000), Standard (2005), and Xbow (2010) use the exact same ferrules. 1" Standard blades & 1 1/8" Magnum/Xbow blades are all interchangeable. A Standard is a Magnum with 1" blades. An Xbow is a Magnum put in an Xbow package. The Xbow did add a 150 grain option. If you shoot Standards & want to try Magnum or Xbow, buy a package of Magnum replacement blades & throw them in your ferrules. It's that simple!
For TURKEY the Slick Trick Standard is the absolute best performer I’ve used. We can take four birds a year here and I’ve been using these heads on them for easily 20+ years. So, believe me when I say that I have had some experience with them. Mostly pass thru hits because I believe it’s the small super blades that cut through the feathers so well.
Love the slick trick series. Personally, I prefer the grizztrick II, but I have shot magnums and standards, which also fly well. The blades can also be resharpened about twice. Love some magnus, too. I like the standard edge black hornet and stinger. My quiver is loaded with the black hornet this year. I think I'll be interchangeably switching from season to season just to keep things interesting.
Can confirm great customer service from Magnus. 1st shot went over the target an into the woodshed. Broke trying to get it out of a 2x4, they warrantied it! And yes, I told them exactly what I did.
All great choices. Great video. You didn’t mention what I’m thinking about for this year, though. Just for the sake of nostalgia, I was considering screwing on a 100 grain Thunderhead for old-time sake.
The Thunderheads have killed more deer than we will ever know. Them and the original Muzzy's are truly bad to the bone. I just never got great flight out of them myself.
@@averagejackarcheryI had good flight with the 4 blade muzzy but I sighted in & shot them with practice blades when I practiced. Also I only shot 1 20 yard pin at the time
All great heads. These are two that have worked flawless for me. Kudupoint for fixed and sevr for mechanical. Both have preformed top notch even in African game and moose.
Thank you, Nate, for another interesting archery video. But seriously, aren’t we able to find better options? I’ve had Grim Reaper send me parts to help with a problem. Kudos to Grim Reaper!Another major mechanical brand seemed to not do so well for me. The deer was last seen biting the arrow out of its ribs on its way to the next county. I put part of an arrow and a Slick Trick clean through a whitetail after the arrow snapped when the broadhead hit the buck’s shoulder. The broadhead and 1/3 of the arrow went through the shoulder, both sides of the rib cage and exited the offside leg. The blades sheared off; but the buck piled up within thirty yards. I had the buck; and didn’t care that it had ruined a broadhead. I’ve had success with Magnus Stinger and Magnus Buzzcut. They performed marvelously; and I didn’t feel entitled to request replacements when the broadheads were damaged. They had fulfilled their purpose; although they had been damaged beyond repair. I just seem to be better off with my 200 grain single bevels with bleeders. They punch through the shoulders; and I have an intact broadhead. I just have to hone the single bevels and replace the bleeders. In the long run I save money; because the blade is reusable. Is shelling out the extra cost 💲 up front what stops most people from recommending and using them?
100%agree with you on the magnus buzzcut.throw all that other shit away except for the Grimm reaper. One thing about the buzzcuts or cut on contact your never second guessing on damage it does to the animals.
Hi Nate. What is the best method for deciding between a 100gr or 125gr broadhead? Is it as “simple” as using the same grain as my field points? Shooting a V3X, 60lbs, 29in draw length, carbon xpress adrenaline 400 spine arrows.
I have used both magnus broadheads before, really like them both. Trying some single bevel iron will fixed blades this year to see if I like them. Have you ever used them in the past?
I did use Iron Will for one year and just couldn't justify the price over other 4 blade fixed heads. Performed the same as my Black Hornets so I dumped them and went back to Magnus.
Have been using black hornet last few years, and it's done great. My brother usually smokes everything with the slik trik, though last year he punched the lower knuckle in front of the heart and only got 2" pen and broke off. he's over 300 fps w/ a turbo hoyt, & 410-ish grain arrow. i hunted for ages with great success with NAP thunderheads, but see nothing of them anymore on any hunting shows etc. Just curious if you would consider them in 2024 or not?
Thunderheards are a tried and true broadhead, but I think we've come a long way in manufacturing and there's a bunch of better options! But deer haven't evolved much and they'll definitely still work as good as the day they were made.
Hoping they cater to the big boys,im 6ft2 and 360,i always have a horrible experience trying to buy good camo.I understand im well above average size, but i know im not the only big man wanting quality gear and always have a hard time finding it. Anyways love your content and will continue to watch.
We make sizes in tops up to 4XL and bottoms out to 4XL and 2XLT! We've got plenty of guys pushing or over 3 bills that wear Huntworth with great success!
Really good broadhead summary! I have a question. On the advice of Rick Wilson (of Death bY Bunjie), I have invested in two different Swhackers to use with my Wicked Ridge Fury 410 crossbow - the 100 grain 2 blade crossbow Swhacker and the 125 grain Hybrid Swhacker incorporating the two fixed bleeder sized blades in with the mechanical blades. After seeing your video, I kinda feel like not using them because of the rubber band thing you talked about, but, Swhacker did make your honorable mention group. So, question is, are you gonna tell me either use something else or use the 100 grain 2 blade or the 125 Hybrid? Would appreciate your educated opinion. Thanks in advance.
Exact archery 4 blade Magnus Stinger Qad exodus Swhacker 207 mechanical all excellent head's. Swhacker 207 the most accurate mechanical and huge exit holes, not the toughest but definitely the best in other categories.
I’m debating trying mechanicals this year for deer-probably not elk. I’m shooting 62# 29.5 dl 430 grain arrows at 287 fps. Do I have enough ass for mechs?
Long range is different person to person. Whitetails in the PA mountains? 40-50 is a poke. Out West? 70-90 is possible. Long range out to 50 for me in the NE and I see tremendous flight out of all of them.
You realize your reason to keep Swhacker out of the top 5 rings true for the Grim Reaper mechs as well, right? And I’ve seen a ton of videos where GR mechs fail to pass through with long nights of tracking.
Swackers only have a 1 inch slit for a entrance hole because they are designed to open on the inside, grim reapers will be fully deployed upon entrance
@@pearlriverproductions9652 that’s the problem, GR don’t open fully on contact. The feet of the blades oftentimes act as dull outriggers and get pushed through the hide. This is why you see so many non-pass throughs in videos with them. The Element guys are notorious for not getting pass throughs with them. Brandon McDonald did a video showcasing this on his channel. Swhackers are 10x more reliable as a broadhead.
4 blade 1” head has more cutting surface than 1-1/4” 3 blade heads. Slick tricks make aa good a blood trail as anything, and goes through bone with the best of them.
Thunderheads have taken more animals Magnus is another one ,I can tune tweak my xbow, they will be very accurate way out there if need be No need to worry about opening or not, it will😂 Best~Regards
Wasp makes some great heads! I've sold a fair amount of Jak Hammers and Drones especially. I just think there are other heads out there built a little bit better. But it's hard to argue with a company that's been around since the 1970's.
I shoot a 150 gr Magnus buzzcut and I love it. Paired with a heavy arrow setup totaling 635gr, it flies straight and zips through the deer. I did not get a pass through only once and that's because the deer dropped and turned and the arrow went through the spine and broke the back leg. That deer ran 60 yards and pilled up. The shot sounded like a 4x4 snapped. I have the video of that hunt on my channel.
Should have titled this the top 5 worse broadheads. BTW, if you're not concerned with penetration, you must be the greatest shot ever, to be able to miss all them ribs. And the many other bones of the body. No matter the animal, penetration is a must. Since it is a must, the only time a chisel tip or a mechanical broadhead should be considered as an option is why no cut on impact broadhead like a G5 Montex is not available. No chisel tip or mechanical will match a Montex.
Never lost a deer with a Magnus buzzcut, but the blood trail is always spotty. I went on a doe hunt last yr a tried out a Swacker shot one at 15 yards, complete pass though spraying blood the entire way.
