Today I am talking about my favorite credit cards and why I really like them. As we are nearing the end of the year it has gotten me thinking about my own personal finance goals, and how credit cards can be a great way to gain perks on travel when you use them appropriately! I hope you find this video helpful whether you are a beginner to credit cards or an expert!

CREDIT CARDS MENTIONED:
Delta Skymiles Gold Card: refer.amex.us/MONICCmLTM?XLINK...
If Delta is your preferred airline, this credit card is a no brainer. Earn 35,000 bonus miles upon sign up, free checked bags, and your spending turns into miles. One unique thing about this card is that card spend counts towards earning status with the airline, leading to perks such as comfort+ upgrades and first class upgrades! Even as a silver medallion I have gotten these sorts of upgrades. I've had this card since 2018 and really enjoy it.
Chase Ink Business Preferred Card: 100,000 point sign up bonus
www.referyourchasecard.com/21...
I LOVE This card. It has a ton of ways to redeem rewards, but my favorite is through the 1:1 transfer of points to World Of Hyatt. Of all the hotel brands, I think world of hyatt gives the best deal on rewards. For as low as 5,000 points you can get free nights at hyatt hotels. With the sign up bonuses form both Chase Ink and Chase Sapphire, that can amount to a really great deal.
For personal use, try the Chase Sapphire Card: 60,000 point sign up bonus
creditcards.chase.com/rewards...
Nordstrom Card: www.nordstrom.com/browse/nord...
Lol I hate this card. Spend $2,000 for a $20 Nordstrom gift card? I'll pass.
Alaska Airlines Card: For 35,000 miles upon sign up- www.alaskaair.com/content/cre...
OR for 65,000 miles upon sign up you can use this referral link: www.applyonlinenow.com/USCCap...
If you live in the pacific northwest and fly Alaska Airlines the most often, this is a great card to have. Free checked bags for you and up to 6 people on your reservation. Card spend turns into miles, and you get their famous companion fare!
*The Chase INK and Delta Skymiles links are REFERRAL links. I get some miles if you sign up through that. This video IS NOT sponsored. All opinions are honest and my own.

I was raised to be super scared of credit cards and only use debit. If you feel that way, don’t worry about it and as long as you’re paying it off in full every month and not spending money you don’t have, get a credit card! It’s actually better to use a credit card than a debit card when you’re only spending money that you already have and being responsible. It’s literally free money!

I would recommend the Citi Bank Costco Visa Credit Card. You get zero international transaction fees so if you happen to travel anywhere outside of the states you don't have to worry about extra fees on every charge made on your card PLUS you dont have to worry about exchanging currency, you'll be good to go! That's all i used when i traveled to Europe and it was just so convenient. You also get 4% cash back when used for Gas at Costco Gas stations!

I had horrible credit after a bankruptcy (which you should never do!) so, my first credit card after BR was the Capital One quicksilver. I wouldn’t recommend it for anything other than building credit. After 3 years I applied and was approved for the AMEX gold card. I got 75,000 points after spending 4K in 6 months.

Like monica said, a lot of these pay per year cards do end up paying for themselves and then some with the perks. I have Chase Sapphire (and freedom combo) and don't spend that much, about $300-$600/mo average. The points I accumulate over the year pay for a $250 flight each year (that i'd be paying for regardless) with points to spare. I've been doing this combo for 6 years now and with my extra points are paying for my airfare to scotland and back! Added perks that have saved my butt is free flight cancellation (as long as it falls in the restrictions) and automatic insurance on things like your luggage. I'd get an airline specific card if I only flew with one airline but it varies for me so for me a card like Chase is perfect!

I waited until I was out of college to get a credit card and since I was fortunate to not have loans I had no credit status which made it very difficult to get a credit card when I wasn't a student anymore. I actually had to get a secured credit card first where you pay a few hundred dollars and that is basically your credit limit. So after having that card for a year, I was able to close it and then get an actual credit card. I chose Discover first and like the changing 5% cash back offers. Although right before I decided to backpack in Australia a few years ago, I signed up for the Chase Sapphire card and I have to say that's my favorite for travel perks.

There are so many credit cards that you can get without a yearly payment that I don’t find it worth it to pay for airline cards like United or Delta. I have a Citi double cash card and another credit card through my bank. They both give me cash back which I can use on anything (including flights if I want). I understand your thoughts on having your credit points going directly toward flight miles because it feels like you aren’t spending any money on flights, I just like having the freedom of spending the cash back on anything. I did highly consider getting an airline card though. They are tempting but I also didn’t want to pigeon hole myself into one airline.

Yeah, I was one of those people that put off having a credit card till I was 30 because I felt I didn't need it and I didn't want to accidentally end up with debt. When I finally decided to get one and did my research, embarrassingly enough I was actually refused when I applied for the ones I wanted. I ended up with a general credit card with my current bank as it felt it was the only place that would give me one.

This is super useful .. especially about the airline cards. I have a Chase Amazon Prime, Chase Freedom Visa ( now it's discontinued and replaced by some sort of mastercard ), Discover student credit card, Amex Blue Cash, and Macy's. Amazon Prime is mainly used at Whole Foods and Amazon because 5% cash back, Freedom depends on the 5% category - sometimes gas stations, sometimes walmart. Discover was my first credit card that I applied when I was a freshman in college. Amex was just sometime stupid I did. I don't need this card at all. None of which requires annual fee, but I'm really looking into some airlines cards now

I have a Discover for emergency uses. I have the Capital One Venture Card. 2X Points on ALL purchases. I put EVERY SINGLE purchase I make on this card and pay off the balance each month. I am debt-free (paid off 19k in 18 months, THANK YOU DAVE RAMSEY), so I researched for MONTHS on which card to get. I got the Capital One Venture Card because I am taking a six week trip to Europe (HOPEFULLY) in Aug 2021, with the flight miles and points in general, I should be able to get at least half of my trip paid for. On both of my credit cards, I have INSANE credit limits. So, I have my Discover credit line lowered to $5,000 and my Capital One Venture credit line lowered to $10,000. What 24 year old needs a $30,000 credit limit? NO ONE. Really loved this video, Monica! I have been watching you for about six years now. Keep up the good work. :)

Hey everyone!! I’m 18 and have my first credit card which I opened before coming to college. I have the discover it credit card just because it is meant for students. My parents were definitely a big factor in why I got a credit card so young as that’s all they’ve ever had their entire lives. Because of that they have an incredible credit score and are able to take out loans as they need and they wanted that for me as well as I get older. I only put $50-100 on my credit card each month, but it’s still nice to start building my credit score! I highly recommend opening up a credit card if you are able to!

However, you may be better off getting a regular card that earns regular cash back that can be redeemed for anything you like 👍 Also, some cards may earn a nice return on gas _as well as_ other categories, allowing you to earn more cash back even faster. Is gas your #1 expense? What else do you spend on each month?

The min credit limit for the Sapphire Preferred is 5k while the Reserve is 10k. I'd recommend applying for the Preferred since it has a higher sign up bonus compared to the Reserve and its tough to justify the increased AF of $550 with the Reserve vs $95 with the Preferred. @i.am.heather
@i.am.heather 3 года назад
Your credit takes a hard hit for the inquiry, but it doesn’t necessarily drop your score. Having multiple hard hit inquiries and declines can drop your score significantly so your best bet is to find a card that has pre-approval for your credit score. Accumulating multiple credit lines too close together WILL drop your score, especially if you’re maxing out those lines and only making minimum payments. The goal is maintaining 30% or less on any card so the credit line is open. If you pay a card off every month, building credit won’t be a problem and the hard hit inquiries aren’t something to be concerned with, especially if you’re someone with at least a 740 credit score.

My first creditcard I got when I traveled to New York. It’s a student one it’s much cheaper and more safer to spend money in my opinion. You can only spend 750euros a month but you can ad money on from your debit account. In Belgium we mostly pay with our debit card. So we don’t really need a creditcard. But I use it for online orders on some website that doesn’t accept debit card. We don’t need a good credit when we buy a house or car. We only need to pay 10% of the house or car in advance. And then we stay in debt for X amount of years. I think it helps a lot that our education (uni) cost only around 1200 - 2000 euro’s each year everything included. (Transport, books, education, ...). It can be less to if you get a scholarship.

I started off with a Collateral Loan through my local bank. When the loan was up I went with the Capital One Platinum, added their Silver Card a year later which is my most used for the cash back. I recently got the CITI Double cash back card which I’m enjoying! I don’t want to get a card that has an annual fee, but if I start traveling more I think I’ll get a card that has hotel/flight points! My score fluctuates between 745-765 and I’ve been building my credit for about 3.5 years.

Loved this video. Someone tell me why I’m so into comparing credit cards...anyways here are my two favs: 1. My Wells Fargo Propel American Express card (I used this for all my business expenses but anyone can get the card) It had a sign up point bonus (I think it was like 60K points if you spend 3K in 3 months..can’t recall the exact deal) but it’s GREAT bc you points can go towards any hotel, flight on any airline, no blackout dates, even food at hotels and SO much more. It’s so easy to redeem and I’m a big fan that I can pay it off & track it easily sense I bank at Wells Fargo 2. The Alaska Airlines card like you said...I always fly Alaska and the companion fair like u said has saved my friends and I so much money. I got to hawaii for $125. It’s such a great card for west coasters and I love checking my bag and not lugging it around the airport. Thanks for making this amazing video. Hopefully it convinces people start building credit early 👏

In the US, like Monica explained, if you’re going to make any kind of big purchase you must have good credit and to build that, having a credit card helps. If she’s using her Delta rewards card to purchase her normal day to day things (gas, groceries, etc) and pays it off every month from her checking account, then she’s getting rewards from the credit card company AND building good credit. The business credit card is a no brainer - she has her own business and I haven’t heard of many businesses without a line of credit. 🤷🏼‍♀️ As for the Alaska Airlines flight card, if she’s traveling on that airline all the time, she may as well use that card for perks on that airline as well. & that Nordstrom card...... definitely a dumb card 😂😂😂 the only thing is, canceling a line of credit too soon can look bad, but I don’t want to see her get hit with a yearly fee if there is one. I guess Americans are weird 🤷🏼‍♀️ How do y’all make huge purchases in the Netherlands (like homes)? Do you not have banks to get mortgages and loans? Do you not need credit? Or do you save the loads of money to make the purchase? What if an emergency happens and you don’t have money for the expense?

@@i.am.heather yeah I get it, when I went to NY for a few months for work I used my mothers credit card (couldn’t get one in the netherlands under 18) We have bank accounts with debit cards.. in the netherlands (not al european countries) we pay everything by debit card.. that is where our loan will be coming on, our social money things (when u rent and don’t have enough income you can get money from goverment, same as with health insurance) most debit cards can go into minus.. untill a maximum a month and you have to get at least some form of money into the account. But you can do it.. i don’t bc i have a savings account with plenty of extra money if something happens We don’t need credit to buy a house or something.. they will check in a register CBR (credit bureau register if i am right) register there will be debts if you have any, if you took a loan for buying a phone (plan) or if you paid something with after pay and never payed back. Most have student loans ( you can loan a maximum of 1000€ a months) there is a part for the tuition in the first year that is 80 euros a month and in the seccond year that is 160 euros a month.. the rest is for other expences.. officially a student loan isn’t counted as the same dept as others .. after 5 years of working you start paying it of and it will be the amount connected to how kuch you make.. i will pay like 15 euros back and after 35 years they will say the rest you din’t have to pay.. so that is basically 50% we don’t have to pay back..

I'm a bit of a points addict and thus I have the American Express Platinum card. Love the flexibility of the AMEX points currency. Btw Monica big tip : Alaska does offer a status match challenge from your Delta Silver status. You just need to fill out a form on the Alaska website with proof of your Delta status and they'll enroll you in the challenge to jumpstart your Alaska elite status journey. Google "Alaska Status match" to find out more
@MattNav

Also side note, Alaska miles are far more valuable than you might have realised, especially when redeeming them for award flights on Alaska's partners such as Cathay Pacific, Qantas, Japan airlines, Icelandair, Emirates and so on. For instance I used 55,000 Alaska Miles in order to fly Qantas business class from New York JFK to LAX to Melbourne Australia and then from Brisbane to Perth... All for $49 in taxes and fees. Cash fare was around $13,000

Booking hotels through Alaska Airlines is also an efficient way to earn Alaska Miles. There are some hotels that are offering on the order of 5000 miles per STAY. The highest I've ever seen was 10000 miles/stay but this was pre-pandemic.

@@MonicaChurch also in 2021, Alaska is due to join the Oneworld alliance meaning that your Alaska elite status benefits will then include a whole bunch of useful perks across the whole alliance, this includes the likes of American, British Airways, Qatar Airways, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, Finnair, Iberia, Malaysia Airlines, Japan Airlines and so on. @@MonicaChurch I just checked the Alaska website and your Delta Silver status would be equivalent to Alaska MVP status. I have a couple! My favorite is the Best Buy one! It took me forever to build credit so the Best Buy credit card isn’t a first credit card type , the perk is 12 months financing with NO interest. So pay it off in a year and it’s great for people that love tech items or if you buy a house (my sister has the same card) you can get great deals on appliances! Also an easy entry level credit card is a college card (most banks offer a low amount) every bank is different but I got my first when I was 18 and my limit was 1,000!

Last part is the best advise, pay them off at the end of the month, all credit cards are banking on the user spending a ton of money and then not paying them off and then giving the credit card companies a ton of interest payments. I have 2 credit cards and built my credit up to 790 at 24 years old and haven’t paid any interest.

Now that the bonus requirements have been met, all my spend is going on my trusty Crypto.com Icy White card, which gives me 5% on pretty much everything. Looking forward to 2021 and building a bit of history with Chase so I can grab the Marriott and Hyatt cards as well.
