Nathan Elliott owns and operates Out of the Woods Forestry a Sawmill, Kiln and woodworking business. OTW is located in the Appalachian Mountain range of Northeast Tennessee. Nathan operates a Wood-Mizer sawmill used in conjunction with other tools to harvest timber from local woodlands and urban environments.

I am not much of a woodworker, just make walking sticks and canes out of natural fall from trees in the Galilee forests, oak, carob, pine, acacia. But your videos I love. You know Nathan, sawing these logs often remind me of people. They may seem rough on the outside but inside there is beauty to behold. Added bonus of trimming down those poplar boards: ready made stickers for your lumber stacks! My grandfather used to say that when he ran out of stickers, it was time to move inventory.

That spalted red oak is BEAUTIFUL. I would love to have some scales of that to make knife handles. 💖 I bet that there are custom guitar makers who would love a couple of slabs of it too. 💖

Great video! Nathan, don't put that scrap on the burn pile! Burn that Red Oak into hit goals,band you will never have as tasty chicken, pork, butts, turkey, etc. When grilling, throw some Red Oak chips or small chunks onto the hot charcoal. Unparalleled flavor from Red Oak!

Wow Nathan , one look at that red oak and you would normally not give it a second glance!!. Good bit of spalting. One look at that end and you would think “yep, that’s firewood!” It just goes to show that you can leave it for years and you can still get some great lumber out of it. Nice video Nathan. Nathan, A friend of mine is giving me 3 10-ft long, 26 inch diameter Red Oak logs. He just wants a 3 inch slab for a bench. This video was perfectly timed. Looking forward to slabbing those logs in two weeks.....

You need to take that stihl down to your local saw shop and have them turn it up a little bit! That saw is capable of much higher performance without cutting down its life span much! Nice saw!!

My kitchen countertops are all made butcher block style from spalted oak blown over in my back yard...the look is stunning.

Based on what I've seem with Oaks, if the bark falls off fairly quick after the tree dies, that old log beneath the sapwood can often be a lot better than one would expect.

W-O-W, I was anxious to hear your comments on that spaulted slab. I loved it! I was imagining that resined up and used as a coffee table or counter top!---I was happy to see the maple tree's haircut! Kinda punk, kinda bonzai, left in place!

My spalted oak slabs are ear-marked for electric guitar bodies. I just need to get a shop set up, and that is probably going to take a couple of years. :(

@@alanatolstad4824 With spalted timber, IMO it's the only way to do it - maybe with a slight rimburst, so darkened, not blackened, around the edge. NATHAN, that is just like the "wild" cherry we have around here, it rots from the outside in!! when ever i stumble across a dead down cherry i check to see just how " rotten " it is, a lot of times i hit the "jack pot" and able to use the chain saw mill to cut some nice useable lumber out of them! thank you another great video

I'd have liked the sawdust removed before the video of sawing that board so we could see the grain. I'd have liked some water on the last board you showed. I just love to see the grain of the wood. I think you got some good wood out of that log.

When you saw a customer log, and find a gem, how do you keep track of the slabs (boards) for 6 mos/year of air drying, then kiln drying with other wood? How can you remember each piece?

Good evening Nathan, Thank you for this video. The farmer should be real happy with those beautiful rift sawn oak boards. I was at a millwork plant in the 1960s and saw millwork for a job using rift sawn Red Oak for a large job in the Chicago suburbs. Even the flush doors were rift sawn veneers. I would have loved to see the millwork installed. Also, excited to see the new edger set up. You're going to have to expand the mill. You're doing a great job. I hope you get to 100k subscripters before the first of the year. Have a very productive and profitable week.

The last cut you make shows a lot of water dripping from the following side of the balde. Is this the natural moisture of the wood or something else to do with the saw?

that was me hitting the blade with a lot of water, trying to keep the blade cool, dense wood heats up the blade,

Hi, I'm curious to know if you burn the sawdust to heat your home, and or shop. Looks like you have a lot of free energy. I have millwork customers that use all the waste to create heat and electricity.

Brother, You'd lose your mind if you came up north here and got into some of this hard maple that's come out of the sugar woods. When these old trees that have been tapped for maple syrup they get vaines in them, Its some of the most beautiful wood there is. The whole you are here, I'll send you home with 3'and 4' Black Walnut that's been cut and the stump was dug up. You know whats hiding in that stuff 😉🍹🇺🇲

OMG I saw the burn pile and my hands started itching. Surely something could be done with it? other than burning? Even if it is for heating homes in the winter? I know nothing of where you live, resource wise. I'm in Phoenix and as you know, it is hot.....this winter hasn't been very cold either. I love wood - it is so beautiful. Your analogy of Christmas gifts because you are the first one to see the grain is perfect. So lucky!

Im currently sawing up some hickory logs thats been down here for quite a while. Probably 8 years. Man i sawed into the first one and bam! Shot gun bbs all in it. Its really gave it a lot of charachter tho crazy looking black spots . I had some curly crotch in one. That was just gorgeous! I made a live edge mantle log out of it. Way cool looking its 10 ft long tho id have to sell it in that full 10 ft due to someone might want to choose whicb part and how long they want it. Its beautiful tho
