Mine would have to be his solo on 'Darling Be Home Soon' ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-MtG5bT13m8U.html - cried the 1st time I heard it. The ride he takes us on is unmatchable
Saw the Derek Trucks Band in 2012. I left really shook by Derek. Precious few guitar players are that in touch with the music and themselves for every note of a gig like he is.
@@stevenkbutler that’s no shit. Game over. Duane was god and Derek grabbed that shit and ran with it. And I totally agree with Michael, best living guitarist. All respect to Clapton, but there is a reason Clapton takes Derek on the road.
Michael, the best thing about this video is seeing you and you alone digging into this. The "lesson" was thrown out the window as you became enthralled. Luv Ya man!!!! Thanks for this treat
@@Guitargate no thank you my friend. Its as if Derek was transported to Neptune and was the only person in the arena. This is an example of objective greatness. There's nothing subjective about you saying its his best solo you have seen. Its a rare occurrence we can all share together. As an aside, take a peek at 3/24/1990 Loser at the Knick in Albany NY. Perhaps the GOAT for the Dead. Jerry had us all captivated in his palm. 😎
Dude, your knowledge of music blows me away. To be able to follow world class guitar playing, replicate most of it, and explain almost all of it, is amazing. Musical minds are the best. You might as well be reciting astrophysics formulas to me. I'm so lost. Just let me enjoy covering Neil Young, Ryan Adams, and the like. Such a buzz kill! Haha.
I just want to add a word of encouragement to your day. I've played guitar for nearly 3 decades and what I have learned is that the undefinable “magic” of certain players is what keeps me coming back. It keeps me digging beneath the surface to see what I’m missing. I can’t thank you enough for the work you put into your channel. Most don’t realize what it takes to produce content like you do. This one hit me particularly hard as this song has a lot of personal meaning to me. By the end of this video I was in tears, as I am every time I listen to this track in various versions. I love your break down and I love the fact you recognize when magic happens. There is no definite definition of what happened, but when it happens you’re left with chills. And you get it. I have watched many of your videos, but this is the first time commenting. I should have before now, but this one moved me to do so. Thanks again and I look forward to every one of your videos that come out. At least from my perspective your work is appreciated and never taken for granted. Thank you sir.
Derek could tie chicken wire to an old fence post and it would sing in his hands. One of the ALL time most naturally emotive, intuitive, and melodic players we shall ever hear
Well, I've seen them every year they've come through Charlotte for the past 5 years. There was one show where Susan's in-ear monitors malfunctioned. So she left the stage to go get it fixed. Derek looked at the band, nodded his head and off they went. It felt magical. The band built up to this incredible crescendo in an Allman-esque, jazz fusion mountain of music. I was overwhelmed with excitement because of how special that moment felt. I'll never forget it. Still got my tickets from the postponed show last year for this summer. Can't wait.
I’ve had the pleasure of seeing and recording Derek many times over the last 20+ years. Your breakdown of his solo is really fascinating and opened my mind to another side of the magic he makes. Well done!
Me and a buddy have been huge fans of Derek since the DTB/ABB days. We both played guitar in the same band and we've probably seen him live about 20 times together just geeking out to him. During college, ABB was playing up at Boyne Mountain in Michigan and after the incredible show, we were walking to our car, which went past the lot where their tour buses were parked. We peered over to see if they were back there and we saw Derek walking into his bus. We were about 30 yards away behind a fence/rail. He noticed us looking at him (just the two of us around) and after about a minute in the bus, he came back out and just walked the 30 yards straight over to us. Went completely out of his way to come chat to a couple of 19 year olds that were clearly in awe of him. I don't remember what was said because we were in such shock, but I'll never forget that moment.
Imagine being a music teacher for an elementary school on north Florida and one day you have a parent teacher conference only to meet Derek trucks and Susan tedeschi their child is your student. That was my brother like 12-13 years ago. Oh and I share my birthday with this legend although he is one year older than me. Saw him live when he played with the allman brothers about 20 years ago and I was blown away. He’s just amazing and just like John butlers ocean, when Derek plays midnight in Harlem, his guitar takes me on a magical adventure that few others can do
I can no longer play due to a car accident 18 years ago. It hurts not actually being able to physically learn from your videos but I can't help watching anyway, your enthusiasm for the craft makes me smile every time. God bless you and your family.
If it's any consolation I was working at a sawmill there was a fluke accident and something happened in my hand Soni got taken immediately to a Dr office where he assessed my hand and figured it was just dislocated and tried over and over dislocating and popping my parts of my finger in and out of the socket but it kept just curling back up and it wasn't dislocated st all it was snapped tendon in my finger that he fully ripped apart trying to out back in the socket. I got sent to the best specialist around and options were surgery and not be able to use and bend a finger ever again or have to wear a splint for 4 months straight with my finger hyper extended and i did that and then 5 months of physio just to be able to play but i can't control my finger all of the time it doesn't listen and pops and just doesn't work like it used to so I can still play I guess but I can't get it to do what I know and it knows it has to do. I probably would have been better off by ever picking up a guitar again there are some times I can't even try things because it feels like my finger is going to just snap apart again and curl up into a hook shape. It's so frustrating and I wasn't ever amazing but I could play. Now I have trouble with open chord songs and playing the most basic things I've tried to just not use that finger but it's in the way I almost would have been better just having it take down to the first knuckle and having a nub
I am blown away by the dynamics. The way this band is never just a wall of sound. The amazing transparency, if that makes any sense. You introduced me to this band - and being from The Netherlands, I'd never heard of them (or perhaps it's just me :) - and now I cannot get enough of them. A crazy solo, but also: what a wonderful voice. Incredible.
The beauty of this tune, and what moves me the most, is how the intensity of Derek’s solo meets the intensity of Susan’s vocal crescendo. I’ve heard Derek say that they build many of their tunes to showcase Susan’s voice, but he’s being falsely modest because only his guitar voicing can meet and compliment Susan’s incomparable vocal mastery. Hat tip to you Michael for a very satisfying analysis of a powerful tune executed by masters.
Susan is the only singer who could successfully front that band; she is basically the only singer I can think of whose vocal strength and power can match that band's intensity when they really start cooking. Anyone else would fall way short of reaching that power like she does.
Wow Michael! This video showed how talented Derek Trucks is but also shows how amazingly talented you are. The way you dissect all these songs and this solo in particular is really impressive. You are so humble about it. You are a bada** in your own right. I’ve tried picking up guitar several times throughout my life with little luck. I plan to give it one more shot and when I buy one later this month I plan on joining your website community for lessons and motivation.
Always glad when a new video of yours pops up Michael, you got great taste man. I'm always entertained and I learn alot. What a band, that solo was liquid fire. Thanks. I'm probably gonna listen to that solo about 20 more times lol.
Midnight in Harlem made me cry...Derek is so talented. He plays without a pick like a couple of other of my favorites. Thanks for the technical analysis. I play by ear and only know what I like...but I LOVE TEDESHI TRUCKS
I stumbled across a video of DTB playing Sahib Teri Bandi live about five years ago. I was totally, totally blown away. No joke, I probably watched that thing 50 times and I was bummed when it got taken down. It remains the single greatest musical performance I've seen on RU-vid.
I only recently found your channel Michael. I dig your passion -- it's genuinely infectious. I chuckle every time you rub your face, overwhelmed about what to say regarding whatever has just moved you. Thanks for caring enough to want to make us better at our instruments.
Derek Trucks is the most melodic, lyrical guitar player I've ever heard. I still remember listening to the Songlines album for the first time and rewinding the CD over and over just to hear him play. After 15+ years I'm still in awe.
I’m only 15:00 through and all I hear from the minor to major - that hint of hope - is gospel music... kind of like, I’m surely a sinner, but I try and pray every day, and when I do, I get a little glimpse of heaven (hope that makes sense).
Other musicians look at him the way I look at them on stage. How in the hell are they doing that? One of my favorite moments of all time is from an old video where he and susan are playing with sam bush's band. Derek takes off on a monstrous slide and sam bush just turns to her with a face that says, "holy shit your boy can play"
Not starting a "who's best" BS argument, but slide is a voice. And there are several that are just as enjoyable. My 1st concert was ZZ Top and Rory Gallagher in '73. Pretty good slide players too, just different voices. Joe Walsh? Rod Price from Foghat? Warren Haynes is no slouch Try these Monte Montgomery "River" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-TvO8MnojAxY.html mutual admiration society Sonny Landreth & Derek Trucks - Congo Square ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-_HW0z86SVkc.html
It's impossible to pick just one amazing Derek solo....but having seen TTB live 7 times, the song that he consistently moves me the most is Midnight in Harlem. His build is just...... transcendent. I love how he listens to the rest of his band. Egoless playing.
Your knowledge of music and music theory is well above what most average musicians, myself included, can comprehend. When guys like Derek play, I wonder if they think in terms of notes and chords, major and minor, thirds and fifths etc...or if they have just played so much that they hear a sound in their head and can just instinctively play what they're hearing without even thinking about it. The instrument just becomes an expressive extension of their mind, body and soul.
My favorite Derek Trucks moment isn’t necessarily a solo but a conversation he had with Warren Haynes. I can’t remember the exact date of the show but I want to say it was from the Beacon run from ‘06. But it’s the cherry on top of an incredible 29 minute Black Hearted Woman. Said moment comes when the band is coming back on after drums. He plays a lick, Warren plays a lick, they go back and forth a bit and then into the end jam. (The one that kinda sounds like the Other One.) I was out camping the night I heard it and it blew my mind.
Seen him with the allman brothers (when the did a tour with widespread panic) and he came out during the panic set and just blew minds. The guy is a genius
Derek just gets better and better, and the two drum kits. When he does something special, she turns around and acknowledges. He rips the paint off the car in sheets, smoothly, beautifully.
LOVE this video. This song gets me every time and Derek is the best there is out there but it's your reaction, you're fricking living every second of this, it's a joy! I think you'd be a great guy to share a beer and talk music with!
Derek played off and on almost all day, standing in with other bands, at the 2007 Crossroads Festival. What a magnificent show, an all day affair of live bands from morning 'til midnight. Seems like I took it for granted, being able to stand shoulder to shoulder in a crowd listening to beautiful music with reverence and awe. That's what you call it Michael, at 0:54, "Reverence and Awe." Those fun times will come again, some sunny day.
Thank you for doing this...I finally found another person who’s as big a Derek nerd as I am! When Oteil and Kofi were in the band was a very special moment, just not the same now.
Totally amazing - see them play live together, and it all comes together. Enjoy, relax, close the eyes and just enjoy such a beautiful piece of music. So glad I have seem them to play live together.
I think I didn't really understand guitar solos until I got taken to a TTB gig. And watching this as a musical dunce, I had one thought Derek reminds me of Aretha Franklin. It can start all controlled and sombre but when the switch flips, and they just LET GO.... Something magical happens. And they can't help it themselves. It's in them and the music is what they need to do to vent it. Great video man. Loved it.
Michael your knowledge about music is awesome, to be able to almost recreate Derek is something else. Damn I believe you' are incredible.....As much as I have always wanted to play the bass I waited too long, as I got older my want to play as been an incredible want but I know it would take a patient individual to take the time, I'm sure you would the teacher, but maybe in my next life. Derek was given a gift that I think no one can or will compare, he is in his own realm and he is out to take the guitar to a level that no one will be able to reach. Susan has the angel inside of her soul and she is so humble and sweet that angel will remain with her forever. Thanks for being a individual that you are and may your teaching ability stay with you forever.......
MICHAEL.I love you for trying. This video was amazing, and not just because you've led me to this rendition of Until You Remember. You're so much fun to watch even for a total newb guitar player.
I was fortunate to see him in Frogwings. They only did 6 shows , John Popper had emergency heart surgery which ended it. Derek and Jimmy Herring on guitar , popper singing/ harp. Burbridge Bros , Bass and keys , Butch Trucks and Marc Quinones on drums. I liked Derek Trucks band more than Tedeschi Trucks , I saw them a bunch in small venues around CT. Great Humble guy , one of the best
@@mbsnyderc DTB from 2001-2007 was more inspiring than 14 people on stage taking turns and the better guitarist not trying to outdo the other too much.
I’ve got tickets to see them on back to back nights at red rocks July 30 and 31 and I can’t wait to be there. After covid, after all this, to see him, I’m so excited
I've got tix as well. There will definitely be a special energy to those shows (moreso than usual, even). Very excited to see Gabe Dixon open up with his own set, too.
They say that life is not measured by how many breaths you take but how many times your breathe is taken away. I don’t know how many times I’ve seen them but I am way ahead. My absolute favorite🎸🎸🎤🎤🎤🥁🥁🎸🎷🎹🎺
Susan, Derek, and their whole band are hands down my favorite musicians ever. I’m not an emotional person, but this song hits me down deep. Thanks for doing this video.
Love your music theory lessons. I am beginner intermediate and look forward to the day I can watch your video and know WTF you are actually saying ; ) Have learned enough on your site already that I know I will get there.
Thanks for taking the time to publicly struggle with something that you knew to be beyond your reach. It helps the rest of us appreciate how amazing Derek was in this performance.
May I just say I don’t even play guitar and I watch all your videos bc you are an amazing teacher. Your knowledge is simply mesmerizing Michael Palmisano!!
Only caught him once live But it was a heater. July 3rd 2004, The Gorge Amphitheatre. Robert Hunter, Then ABB, and The Dead. Double dose of Warren Haynes and Derek came out for Lovelight and After midnight. Damn good time.
These videos enhance the understanding of the musical language of a song and sometimes aid in transferring that to the fingers, but they always get you to appreciate a song so much more
[head shaking] Susan Tedeski can sing the phone book and make it emotional. As for Mr. Trucks, he's from another planet. I don't think there's any amount of theory is going to get me to play with that emotion, accuracy and creativity. I don't play slide either, but I'm sure that among his peers, he's at the top of the heap. Man! What were the key strokes you used to rewind? That's one of the most frustrating thing about learning on RU-vid.
Derek's attack on the slide is insane. I have not seen him live with his Band but I have seen him live many times with ABB and he and Warren would light up that stage. Derek has a lot of Duane in him but he is without a doubt one of the best slide guitarists on the planet. He has his own sound very much too. Jam Bands have soul and they show it all the time. If you love Derek, I would suggest Live at The Beacon Theater 2003 The first solo Derek on "Ain't Wastin Time No More" is killer, every note. The whole show was excellent, I was there and will never forget, I got chills.
sort of makes you want to laugh and cry at the same time and even when he is whipping it into a frenzy he never looses absolute control over the dynamics of it and his right hand is insane
I hope you went to their 3 day stand in Frederick. I was there all shows. Wouldn’t miss it for the world. An incredible venue to tailgate and see one of the best slide guitarists alive today. Along with that sultry voice of Susan. I saw her way back when ok a blanket at wine in the woods and there must have been 75 of us at Ledew Gardens and Susan with an amp and a guitar. Very special
