Diesel engines are not about horse power, they're all about torque, torque and again torque. My all time favorite was my 159 Alfa Romeo 1.9 16 Valve Diesel, the way the car drove, the seats, the interior and the Giurgiaro exterior, one word : magnificient !
@Screaming-Trees
@Screaming-Trees 8 месяцев назад
Maybe not but there are a couple of noteworthy diesels that are also quite fast or tend towards sporty if you will. The 2.5 litre Mercedes 2011 (one installed in the c350 cdi with the V6 diesel). That car had a 5.8 sec 0 to 60 and top speed 155mph top speed ). BMW did a similar thing with their 535d (2016 model comes to mind). Great performance and really good fuel economy too I guess but that's an aside. BMW is sportier than the Mercedes but both are good examples of how a diesel could have sporting qualities.

I drove the 159 diesel too, in a 2.0 Wagon Ti-version, the only car I sold (way) to soon. Heavily underrated IMHO…. Really was a great drive, especially with the Ti-seats.

*I very rarely see the Rev Counter go over 2000rpm in my Mercedes (W247) 2019 AMG 8 Speed B200 CDi - This has absolutely amazed me, so so quiet, incredible range and over 35 mile journey (A6/A46) to Newark did nearly 90 mpg - hit traffic near end. This car will no doubt still be running in 20 years time and still giving good sensible practical use.*

I can vouch for the 1999 PSA 2.0 hdi 8 valve 109hp. Incredible durability. After running it in about 9000 miles i remapped it to 128hp... Then drove it 504,000 miles in 17 years. Thats over 800,000 km. Engine was inspected at 500,000km and looked in great condition so i kept the car, i was aimming for 1 million km then put it in a museum. Driveshaft failed in the end and left me stranded 1000 km from home. Replacement was going to take 3 working days to arrive plus a weekend and 1 day to instal it. Leaving me stuck for 6 days. So i had to scrap the car and fly back home.

From a man that only drives diesel, had over 30 diesel cars and grew up in a country where 99% of all vehicles are diesel. Also works on diesel cars for fun. Let's get this right: 1. VW 1.9TDI ALH is the holy grail of reliability. Nothing. Comes. Close. 1.000.000km units are everywhere. To this very day. 2. BMW 3.0d N57/M57 is the perfect balance of performance, reliability and refinement. 3. Toyota 4.2d 1HZ is a workhorse but lacks refinement and performance. 4. Renault 1.9dti/2.0dci (1.9dci excluded) 5. PSA 2.0 HDi 6. GM/Opel/SAAB 1.9/2.0 CDTI 7. Hyundai 1.6 CRDI 8. Difficult to list anything else to match above

I had a Peugeot with the HDi 136 engine attached to a six speed box and it was fantastic. It was a pity the rest if the car was not so great, severe corrosion issues from new (2004), with Peugeot and the dealer being useless to customers. I currently own the Volvo D5 SUV (2011) and I like the way it pulls and sounds, and the vehicle in all is top notch IMO. I did have a Mk1 Golf diesel 1.6 litre (none turbo), that was so slow I had to book a week in advance to overtake anyone.

Have a i30 with the d4FB engine, 145k miles and had little to no issues. Only small issue has been a slight gas leak from the EGR gasket, and a small oil weep from the valve cover gasket. Not the most exciting engine, but perfect for motorway miles and cheap to maintain and service. The Hyundai service intervals are 20k miles, which I've ignored and changed the oil roughly every 7k between garage services.

Urban driving 35mpg, rural 40mpg+ drive gently and at 60mph it's 50mpg+ oh and that's a 0-60mpg in the fives and 460lbft on BP ultimate. If there's a better diesel out there I have never come across it. Even sounds sporty people have asked what petrol engine it has😂 Good video.

Interesting I had a 1.9 Bora TDI and had problems. They started at 72k miles. First was blocked egr and the breakdown services could not identify the fault. Second was now I changed the belt at 80k however there was a non fatal slip at about 85k. The final straw was oil pump failing causing a catastrophic engine failure due to oil starvation. It's really put me off the brand. It was a long time ago my car was a 1999 car. But I know of others with very high mileage golfs. I guess I was unlucky but because the car was expensive and repair work was also very expensive I would be reluctant to buy a car with that engine.

I had a 1992 530d MSport Auto which produced 184hp. I had it chip tuned to 220hp..it could do 0-60 in under 7 seconds and returned average fuel economy of 44.8mpg.. on motorway runs at 80mph @2100rpm often returned 49mpg Overtaking was rapid I surprised many a Porsche Boxster and Audi RS.. It was E39 probably the best balanced and handling saloon car I have driven...

Common Rail was introduced by FIAT with their JTD engines.... first on 1.9 and 2.4.... than came the 1.3 and 1.6.... Since Direct Injection was introduced.... diesel engines lost all their reliability.... it require very high injecrion pressure...

Seems in contrast to my country. Once India made pick-up truck TATA brand used Mercedes diesel engine and marketed it in Thailand. They have many engine problems compared to all Japanese brands. Finally, it closed down. The Korean KIA and Hyundai also use old model Mercedes diesel engines on their luxury commuters. Mostly they ends up , engine heated and broke ,on their trip , steep road mountaineer in Thailand while other Japan brands are used daily there.
