Oda won a contest when he was young to put a fan character into a manga. His entry was the muscular Panda Man so now Panda Man will show up in the background from time to time.

The panda you were seeing in the pile of pirates, was panda man. He is Oda's mascot he appears in most of the anime episodes. If you look for him, kind of like where is Waldo

Zeff didn't do that because of masculinity o anything, it's because Sanji feels that he CAN'T leave because he's indebted to him. That's why they pretended the soup was bad, and why Sanji decided to leave only after hearing Zeff's explanation of why he did that.

I think you missed a little bit of the nuance of Zeff wanting Sanji to leave and follow their shared dream, but Sanji felt so indebted that he felt like he couldn't leave him. We see with these two again the theme of inherited will that is ever present in One Piece.

I would HIGHLY suggest that you watch episodes 35, 36, and 37 together. Those three episodes go together very well and are incredibly impactful. I know you want to keep to 2 episodes per video, but maybe make an exception for those 3.

"Don't catch cold" gets me every single time. We know what he's actually saying. He has no regrets. Dancing to the theme song? Such a dork. It makes me happy too. Please never change! The English dub has "We Are" in English, and it's fairly close to the translation you see here. Although there is no verse with "biorhythm" in it. A lot of the theme songs have an official English version up to a certain point. Seriously though, never change. I love that song too.

I don't know if anyone told you, but One Piece won an award for best anime intro when the show debuted.

Don't.... don't worry about that panda shark. It doesn't make sense and is never explained or even referenced again. It's purely Oda using a device to get Luffy and Sanji a way to follow where Nami went while keeping the crew split up. It's inelegant and blunt and bizarre and that's all it is.

The Sanji and Zeff dynamic is really well done imho. They have such an antagonistic relationship because they love each other but are also upset with one another. Zeff is mad because he didn’t save Sanjis life for him to give up on his dream to find the All Blue. Sanji is frustrated because he wants to leave but feels too much in debt to leave the old man. It’s a good lesson on how even genuine love can turn toxic.

The reason they felt like they need to piss on you off to push him away so that he starts his adventure. Was because Zeff believed that Sanji would never leave because he felt that owed zeph his life for saving him and they were stranded when he was a kid.

We should start taking bets (or at least a poll) on what your reaction will be when the opening theme changes. Excited? Sad? Both? Other?

If you want no spoilers at all you have to wait until after the Water 7 Saga as there are minor, though not majorly story changing spoilers in the live action that are revealed in that arc.

Just one of those fun details that shows the research Oda put into the story!

I do feel like after the convo about you dancing in the intro to 29, it made me realize that this is maybe the most visibly fun I've seen you have reacting to something. Unfortunately we haven't seen ghin since, but in one of the most recent chapters (1122 i think) there was supplemental material that not only did ghin make it to the grand line, so did don krieg and pearl, and they're all going on an adventure in the grand line.

Normal communication wouldnt have worked with Sanji and Zeff. Sanji would’ve never left Zeff’s side and to Zeff that is stupid because he wants Sanji to go out to sea and fulfill his dream. So this whole hazing thing is pretty much them making Sanji mad enough to leave. Of course it ends up with Sanji realising they love him so much they would rather have him hate them than abandon his dream. Also Sanji doesnt really need Zeff’s acknowledgement for his cooking. He knows he’s good.

Panda man is a reoccurring gag character hidden in the background. Oda hides him in the manga, too.

I'm so excited for you to watch the Live Action after the East Blue. There is some info that's originally revealed far later than in OPLA but it honestly changes nothing and all the characters are still enjoyed well. It wont change the experience from East Blue to the original reveal point, in fact I've found the joke actually hits in a fun new way with the knowledge

without spoiling anything i would say some of the live action changes are definitely for the better though i am sure there are purists out there who want a 1 to 1 in those kind things which really wouldnt work. Kinda like in the last of us how they said they wanted to keep some moments as true to the game as they could but also can improve on things they didnt think they handled as well in the game.

the pacing of the anime is different from the manga.. the manga has a good pacing even when you're a slow reader.. its just that the anime only covers 1-2 chapters of the manga thats why they prolong the scenes, which is good sometimes to get the feels but if you're doing it constantly it'll ruin the show

Yea I started watching and i skip the intro, recap and credits and it feels like its saving so much time but also theres still soooooooo many episodes. can imagine for you its amplified as well due to this being a reaction video you kinda have to commentate on it. Ive seen some channels that do brief intro and outro to episodes so their reaction is purely like in the moment stuff but honestly i think the better reaction channels are ones who deep dive into the content after the fact. the purely "in the moment" reaction channels just seem lazy

Hey just a heads up! The live action One Piece spoils something pretty big that goes well beyond the East Blue saga! Like something that gets revealed in the anime in like the 300-400 range. Just wanted to try and let you know just incase you wanna stay blind for the anime!

That Sanji farewell scene really highlights what makes this show SO special in my eyes. The 'feeling' or vibe or whatever you want to call it from that scene, is something that can't be explained nor replicated by any other show. The way the music, voice acting and emotions come together so damn well to give you a farewell scene that both hits you deep in the feels, and also simulatenously evoking a feeling of nostalgia, is truly an excellent feat. I've seen the scene so many times now and I still get chills.

Sanji and Zeff farewell always gets me, those are father and son for real (yeah, not the most healthy relationship but i guess that's how an old school pirate would raise a kid lol). Zeff knew acting like that was the only way to push Sanji to leave, Sanji would have never left by himself otherwise and would have given up his dream because he felt indebted to him.

It's less to do with approval for Sanji and more with the idea of paying a debt. Zeff saved his life and raised him, and Sanji feels that the only way to pay that debt back is by working at the restaurant. Zeff doesn't see it the same way, and wants Sanji to live his own life on his own adventures, and following their shared dream for the All Blue. And the way they communicate is through this familial bickering, which doesn't exactly help. I think Oda is then taking potshots at this "tough guy" form of communicating by a) having what finally changes Sanji's opinion to be Sanji overhearing Zeff and the cooks *communicate plainly* to Luffy, and NOT the dumb passive aggressive reverse psychology tactic with the soup, and b) by having the tough guy facade just break apart completely at the final farewell.

This is the first time I've watched one of your videos and I enjoyed your reaction and analysis! I'm just going to add a few points (and I apologize if you've already mentioned them in previous videos): While the antagonists of these arcs are great foils to Luffy, they are also great foils to the new strawhat character being introduced. For example, Captain Kuro is the man with a thousand plans, who wants so desperately to stop being a pirate that he will lie about it for the rest of his life if needed and kill his pirate crew to silence them. Meanwhile Captain Usopp is the man of a thousand lies, who will lie about everything except being the son of a pirate, because he's proud of that and he cares for his pirate crew and tries to protect them however he can. In other words, Syrup Village is about the pride of being a pirate. Baratie on the other hand, is about the risk of going after your seemingly impossible dreams and the inner faith needed to do that. Sanji is someone who has put his dream on the backburner, because he thinks he has to devote himself to the Baratie and Zeff. Seeing Zoro and Luffy risk their lives without hesitation in order to pursue their dreams is what gives him the push he needed to realize his own inner faith. Meanwhile, Don Krieg is a man who persistently pursues his ambition to go to the Grand Line but doesn't devote himself to anyone, instead expecting complete devotion and obedience from his crewmembers threatening them with death if they disobey. He has no inner faith, instead depending on having the "best" weapons and defenses to arm himself with. There's also a parallel between Sanji and Gin as two men who are both devoted to someone, but while Zeff does not want Sanji to risk his life for him, Krieg absolutely does expect Gin to.

sanji doesn't want approval for his cooking... he wants to protect zeff and make sure he's okay and his debt is repaid. but zeff wants him to follow his dreams. how did you misinterpret their relationship that much lol

The next arc is the one that we tell new viewers to get to, because if they're not hooked after that then nothing is going to get them into the series. It's also the arc the live action ends at, so after that you're good to watch it - with the warning that there is a SIGNIFICANT character spoiler halfway through, showed much earlier than in the source material.

Excited for you to eventually hit up the live action version after east blue (and/or the SAG-AFTRA stuff is resolved?) - maybe rope in Clarus too since it's a shorter time commitment?

I mean the reason the chefs insluted sanji and pretended his cooking sucked is because he striaght up REFUSED TO LEAVE out of obligation towards zeff (not out of a need for acknowledgement, Sanji isn't really after THAT, because he KNOWS he's a good cook and he knows everyone else knows it too) since he felt guilty for what Zeff gave up for him. But Zeff doesn't WANT Sanji to give up his dreams for him, zeff wants Sanji to pursue his dreams. and Sanji leaves because, after hearing the truth, he realises he does wants to leave an find the All Blue and staying here isn't going to do anything, and he realsies how much Zeff and the other chefs care about him and his dream and how his refusal to leave is actually hurting them. The shark taxi thing isn't a thing but its a fun idea that culd easily fit in one piece XD

Zeff's crew and people on the ship were going to die anyways. In fact they were lucky that two of them survived. Ships sank due to large waves, natural disasters basically. zeff couldn't do anything there. Due to those large waves They washed up on that mountain-like Island and couldn't even get down from it on their own.

Everybody changes clothes pretty much every arc. It's one of the few animes that does it in shounen. Sometimes it's fully noticeable and sometimes it's slight. Like Luffy would have on a different shade of blue shorts in a different shade of a red shirt. But it's actually different. And then sometimes it's just a totally different outfit.

If there is one thing the live action does better than the anime, it's the pacing. I think you'll really enjoy the live action. I personally thought the Sanji Goodbye scene was even better in the live action.

"Monkey" doesn't sound the same to a japanese speaker the way it sounds to a native english speaker. It's just a hip foreigner word cool to say. Just like "Saru" doesn't instantly ring "monkey" to a westerner. A good example is Denki Kaminari from MHA. To you it sounds like a cool name but to a japanese it's just "Electricity Lightning" which is quite silly and only makes me think of my monthly bill

The reason why Zeff and the fighting cooks are kind of assholes to Sanji is a bit hard to understand I feel, it can feel a bit convoluted. Basically, Sanji feels he owes his life to Zeff since he saved him twice when he has a child, one from the sinking ship and then again from starving to death. On top of that, he also taught him to cook and fight and both built this which was Zeff's dream of having a ship-restaurant to feed everyone on the seas. So Sanji won't leave Zeff no matter what. Zeff doesn't like this because as Luffy said, he didn't save Sanji's life just so that he would throw his life away and give up on his dream of finding the All Blue. He saved Sanji's life so that he could live and go and fullfill his dream and Zeff's. Because Sanji is so damn stubborn and he wouldn't accept leaving under any circumstances, Zeff tries to be an ass to him to get him mad and get him to leave without feeling guilty but it never quite works. Until Luffy comes around and that's too much of a good opportunity to miss so they all bully him to bits in that last part to finally get him to be so angry that he decides to accept Luffy's offer and leave the Baratie. Because Sanji wouldn't leave any other way. But then when Zeff tells him "don't catch a cold" that's when Sanji realizes what he's done and breaks downd and everyone shows their true emotions. I have conflicted emotions with Sanji all the time because of his lecherous tendencies but he's such a gem in the fact that he's extremely noble and has such a strong sense of justice and is a child at heart, under that "trying to play cool" facade that he plays. (Although he is undoubtedly very cool too).

Nah the recap isnt better on a weekly basis. Its just pandering to fill the time. Not all animes do it. See, One piece does tho because they dont care about getting stuff done in X amount of time. They have a contract to do this forever and ever, so theres no rush on any site, and only benefits if it goes slower.
