Luffys tenacity is what makes him a legend to me, idk how you can watch his fights with arlong, crocodile and Rob Lucci and still just boil him down to some stupid guy. He feels genuine anger on behalf of the oppressed, he sheds tears for his friends gets the shit beaten out of him putting his life on the line for others. He does often put them in a difficult situation, but because his intentions are always to help the oppressed, those people end up joining his side and balancing the scales, resulting in a super satisfying victory after a steep and tenacious uphill climb.
Yeah seeing luffy fight with ussop and turn his back while crying after beating him hit me. Charlie wasn’t watching one piece he was watching two halves
Him shitting on skypiea luffy actually hurt my soul because that arc is what made luffy a legend for me The entire arc was built around luffy wanting to prove that the sky island exists, that being said we get to watch luffy just explore and have a goofy fuck around of a time on AN ISLAND IN THE SKY THAT WE NOW KNOW DOES EXIST and all the while he is slowly putting together what’s going on around the island, it takes such a long time to build up that you start to think “wow this luffy guy is really just fucking off around this arc” and then you get to the climax of his enel fight and all of a sudden you realize that THE ENTIRE TIME LUFFY WAS FUCKING AROUND ON THIS ISLAND HE ONLY HAD ONE GOAL SHOOTING THROUGH HIS MIND AND IT WAS TO RING THAT FUCKING BELL DUDE LITERALLY TUNNEL VISIONED AN ENTIRE ARC JUST TO PROVE TO A GUY HE KNEW FOR TWO DAYS THAT THERE REALLY WAS SOMETHING UP THERE AND HIS LIFES WORK WASNT FOR NOTHING it’s just such a grand beautiful payoff, and that’s when I realized luffy wasn’t dumb, he just goes with the flow with only one singular goal in mind and he doesn’t stop until that goal is achieved regardless of everything that gets in his way because he’s just a pirate on his own journey. Skypiea luffy changed the entire game for me and his tunnel vision has held strong through the entire manga and I CANT wait to see the inevitable end. Wish Charlie could see the in between where luffy secretly knows what he wants in every arc and accomplishes it 99% of the time
Luffy is the simple solution to complex problems. Sanji being trapped on Baratie due to a debt is solved by Luffy saying to “just leave”, his solution to Nami’s financially slavery by Arlong is just “ok I’ll beat him up”. His neutrality to everything around him and make the simpliest solutions come true is always wonderful
Facts and once he watches luffys backstory and once luffys actions start having severe consequences. He will fall in love. Certainly. The stakes go from a 3 to a 10 by the end.
@@jimjason5146I have a hard time believing he’ll love Luffy even after Marineford. If it takes that much for you to enjoy a character, especially a mostly stagnant character like Luffy, his opinion won’t change much.
@lesten2707 seeing him repeatedly getting his A** beat for his friends and just what lengths he will go to for his friends adds a lot and makes you respect him more. The way he tries to help his enemies as well is admirable. And once Conquerors haki is introduced, it really explains why he can't back down. For example repeatedly trying to punch the inside of the snake 🤣. He is hard-headed, and through effort alone, he triumphs. And later in the story he gets more serious because they are in actual danger being at war with the yonkos and the marine's OP captains.
Still unfortunate to hear he hated the first 300 episodes so much 😭 definitely starts peaking around water seven but i got hooked at like baratie or arlong park
lol i got hooked when zoro joined and arlong park but it prob helped that i was younger and a lot of the comedy hit a lot more and second time rewatching it i got to enjoy all the details and foreshadowing
I always feel so sorry for him when he talks about how slow the pacing is. Poor guy doesn't know he's still in the "fast-paced" era that actually adapts more than 10 pages per episode
@@harnessedcomic4381ong as soon as i finished Dressrosa i vowed to skip right to the Doffy fight upon rewatch cause Dressrosa is paced so fucking bad. did you know that Rebecca's flashback is shown FIFTY-TWO TIMES throughout Dressrosa's entire course? holy shit.
I feel like so many of Charlie's criticisms can be resolved by simply reading the manga (pacing issues, maintaining interest without dragging on, and shorter flashbacks iirc)
youre still just startin dude, and im glad. Cant wait for the many times your mind gets sooo hardly blown by different realisations about the story, oda and so on. MUch fun man!!
Welcome to the journey 💜 glad you finally started to enjoy it. I had basically the same experience as you took me around 2 years to get to where you at but, as like you did started to enjoy it thoroughly that being said and tbh it’s changed my life. It gets better.
I love how Charlie was just like us when we started one piece. “Nobody dies I hate it!” Then Oda started to cook now we don’t want anybody important to die anymore😭
they still need to kill of main characters we still haven't got a single good death it would be much sadder if it was someone we knew for a while then just one arc
the part that really got me wasnt that but when aokiji shows up at the end and stands from outside the party just to tell robin that saul was his friend and to make up for what he was forced to do that day he decided to give her another chance at life and tells her hes glad she finally found friends.
There are so many times in this video where I just think, ‘wait till you get to marineford’, such as when he says that no one dies, or that luffy has nothing to his character
*Spoiler for Marine Ford* In Marine Ford are just 2 Major Deaths, for a war Arc this not much(plus maybe Little Oars Junior, his status reads as unknown, which is ridiculous). There are virtually no deaths from all the other parties including John Giant who took the massive punch from Whitebeard. Especially that no high ranked/named marine died is ludacris.
The thing about Luffy before time skip is that Luffy is very casual, outgoing and carefree. But after some events he gets serious and realises that his actions have consequences.
Aka saboudy and marineford and imo that’s where most of his development comes from realizing the scope of which the enemies he’s facing in route to becoming pirate king . And what makes that marineford/saboudy moments so impactful for luffy character is everything we’ve seen up until this point in how luffy always believes he can protect anyone and then seeing he couldn’t even save his brother . I hope he realizes all this whenever he gets there eventually. He has no idea at all about how deep Luffys character eventually gets
That "300 episodes before it actually starts getting good" is the era of one piece millions of one piece fans wish for to happen again, more interaction with crew, more chill island travel, time on the ship, you cant statisfy everyone i guess, its why some of the show is slice of life other dark and serious and other is fights and action, it has something for everyone, a show kids can watch and adults can enjoy
Yeah,i miss the interaction with the crew and more chill island travel but i guess that will never happen again bcz of how One Piece is in the Final Saga which is Oda gotta be more focused on finding the One Piece and explaining every mystery that ever happen in One Piece
Yeah kinda same? It took a bit for me to get into it too and One Piece got better & more interesting story wise later on but I do miss the chill & laid back parts of earlier one piece. Where I felt the funny crew interactions were actually more funny rather than the same overused jokes later on. I also feel like the later arcs now are quite a bit longer and there's always high stakes & high tension without letting go. Like both eras got their positives & negatives. It did take me a bit to get into One Piece and while I think it's better &more intersting now, I do miss some of the earlier parts as well.
I was hooked by Arlong Park cause how can you not be??? Luffy's enthusiasm is contagious, and that whole arc is just perfect. The scene where Nami's crying and trying to cut her tat off and kicking sand at Luffy but he gives her his hat. GOD DAMN
@@TheWarden04well put, yeah I got into one piece really heavy around baratie when Mihawk shows up. I was in it for the adventure so the lengthbwas exciting for me and the quality and payoff has been huge since specially in terms of the lore and world building that comes together
I like Luffy because of the moments when he shows unexpected amount of emotional intelligence. He will see a crewmate in distress and know exactly what to say or do to snap them out of their funk. In Arlong Park with the hat, the way he immediately looks past the parts of Brook and chopper that they think would scare others. "I still haven't heard you say it" to Robin. It shows that beyond his goofiness he is absolutely paying attention to the issues of the people around him.
The manga takes 1/4 - 1/3 of the time to read as the anime, and arcs like skypiea don't suffer from bad pacing and they're great. The anime does surpass the manga on occasion but it's not as good 99% of the time. But it's still great that you're enjoying the story one way or another.
I think Charlie will start liking Luffy a little more when he reaches the Saobody Archipelago arc through to Marineford. I feel like Luffy is a lot less dumb and more focused throughout these arcs compared to when he's just goofing off and having an adventure in the earlier arcs with the crew
That's exactly what I was thinking myself based on what he said he doesn't like about him in this video. I can't really remember myself but I kind of remember myself feeling similar to Charlie, not that I didn't like Luffy but in these early arcs he was basically too strong for what they were fighting so Oda always had to find a way to sideline him to make the arcs longer whcih meant he would fall asleep, get lost, or something like eaten by a snake for half the arc before someone would free him and then the finale would begin. Kind of during and after Thriller Bark I think that starts to change once you're on the Warlords and up enemies. And when you get to the Emperors its almost the opposite where he may come to blows with them early just to show how outclassed he is.
@@JohtoBurglar like charlie said it’s either u like him or don’t. i’ve always liked him but i can understand y people wouldn’t. i think luffys role as captain plays a huge role. like imagine zoro attitude as captain. he plays the right hand man perfectly. plus then when luffy does get serious yk something is wrong
@@lorenzosaudito sorry deleted it. i purposefully left out who.. he said his girl watched it so he knows some deaths so i didn’t think twice. but my bad
Luffy has a very subtle character arc, on the surface, he is exactly how you described him, however, as the show progresses and you start to pay more attention to the fine details, it becomes apparent that there is more depth to him than meets the eye. The first sign of inner wisdom was on jaya when luffy and zoro spoke with Blackbeard, as Blackbeard becomes more important, that interaction will also change your outlook on luffy. Luffy vs ussop also sets the tone for how luffy will grow as a character, that was one of his first true tests of his resolve as a captain and we’ll see more of that side of him in the future.
Nope. He is one of the main shounen protagonists that doesn't change. And theres nothing wrong with that. I hate critics who say that a good character is the one who goes through changes. *Character development.* Thats the problem allegedly. What about *character influence?* Naruto, Goku. Talk no jutsu? Luffy doesn't change. They change the people around them. Luffy changed Zoro, Nami , Sanji, Usopp, just to name a few. He got them to join his crew and die for him. That's a solid character. Accepting Ace's death is development. Luffy getting everyone to his side, which is 99% of his character, thats influence. You know what's crazy? We don't judge a person's character this way in real life. Because by this standard, a prison inmate who turned his life around has a better character than a person who has no criminal record. *Because character development.* No. You judge unchanging characters from what others say about him. What he did for others.
To defend Charli a little After 20+ years of reading one piece, Luffy's most prevailing character trait is Stupid and Hungry. Is it true he has other qualities like loyalty, kindness, and empathy, but in all arc Luffy's Stupidity somehow always handicaps him in the first act of every arc just so someone else helps him in the 3rd act.
It's a shame he doesn't like Luffy, Hell I like pre time skip Luffy more than post time skip Luffy because he has so many memorable moments, His fight against Ussop, Him charismatically holding Zoro hostage with either death or freedom at their first encounter. One of Luffy's greatest aspects is his emotional Intelligence, he can always read his crewmates emotions, respecting Ussops duel, Waiting for Nami to ask him for help first during Arlong park, Forcing Robin to say what she actually feels despite her sacrifice, The entirety of his relationship with Sanji during Whole cake island arc. That level of understanding keeps his crew together and boiling down his character to this goofy loudmouth idiot that is practically useless for 10-20 episodes before fighting the big bad is understandable but letting that side of his character affect your perception of what truly makes him a great character and leader is a bit undeserving.
luffy is one of the very few protagonists in anime(and media in general) to consistently rank number 1 in every popularity poll in his series. luffy gets series when needed, and he's much more perceptive than people give him credit for. he subtly develops as time goes on, his battles are extremely interesting to watch, his battle IQ is incredible. luffy just keeps getting better and better. the key to enjoying one piece is honestly just "Patience" expecting instant gratification will not get you anywhere with this show. or just read the manga for the amazing pacing
I think a lot of Luffy's emotional intelligence just makes him seem like an idiot because the Shounen genre and a lot of popular anime in general have the common trait of dense or outright stupid main characters. A lot of Luffy's development as well is seen better in hindsight once you've reached certain points of the story. The first few times where Luffy is being actually smart is easily written off as a coincedence but slowly it begins to add up and you realize who Luffy really is and why he does what he does.
I kinda like how luffy doesnt kill the villains of the arcs because he views crushing your dreams as a worse fate than dying. Similar how zoro was willing to die for his dream on baratie rather than give up on his dream to live.
The author is so childish not letting the villains die. This is why One piece is catered to kids and manchilds because of the notions of “killing is bad” even if used against the villain.
One of the things I’ve always enjoyed about One Piece was the scale of the world Oda built. We aren’t just following Luffy and his crew, people are out and about doing their own thing and making their own moves. It makes the world feel so much more alive. The Ace vs Blackbeard fight was one of my favorite moments. We the audience knew it happened, but Luffy didn’t have a clue. So the tension was immediately raised in the following arcs. Oda just does a fantastic job at world building and making his world constantly feel alive and moving.
Absolutely. This is even more evident if you read the manga and see the little stories that go on in the title cards. Every character we meet truly matters and exists, and that's an amazing aspect of One Piece that I, as a reader of a looot of Shounen Jump, can appreciate
Funny that you mention the rest of the world making their moves and mentioned specifically Ace vs Blackbeard since *spoilers* In the manga we see all of the schemes of Blackbeard coming into fruition right now and the chapter that released just today is about Garp's fight against his commanders (notably Aokiji) to rescue Koby who had been kidnapped
Im on the same boat as you, charlie. It took me about 6 years of dropping it and coming back to finally get to water 7/enies lobby. Now im loving it, at around ep 540 of the anime. As a fair warning, thriller bark is kinda slow, but the arcs right after it are gold. Good luck and may we all catch up and watch the finale eventually.
@@sasagrcevic475 bro emotional intelligence is the understanding and awareness of your own emotions and the emotions of others, that is exactly what luffy is capable of we've seen this especially when it comes to his crew
At the time that Enies Lobby was airing, the anime was dangerously close to catching up to the manga and running out of material to adapt. The studio wanted to keep up the weekly episodes rather than take a break, and that’s why they added those weird filler episodes in the middle of such a climactic moment. That’s also why Luffy was stuck in the snake belly for so long back in Spypeia. The anime really likes to play up Luffy’s lack of awareness for the sake of padding time.
Yeah I always thought of that as well, if it gets too close to the anime then they either have to delay the episodes or do a fullmetal alchemist and go it's own route which is a very heavy gamble and also not the story oda wants
Thats a really weak excuse, if they dont have chapters to adapt, wait... thats the most obvious decision and what most anime do to make it enjoyable, adding filler and dragging shit out for the sole purpose of not wanting to take a break is fucking braindead...
I think it’s worth pointing out that Pel was supposed to die in the explosion, but the chapter of the manga where the bomb goes off came out literally just a few days before 9/11, and so Oda decided having a character die in an explosion was in bad taste, so he basically retconned it so pel survived even though he didn’t have an explanation for how he lived
A character based in a middle-east inspired country, no-less. Its understandable but I wonder if he'd be willing to un-retcon it now that time has passed. Like in a Remastered version
The childish nature of Luffy and the humorous moments that occurred in the pre-timeskip arcs are what drew me in. I was hooked since the Arlong Park arc. Seeing Luffy get serious was so rewarding. Once you hopefully catch up, you’ll come to miss these old arcs and the older animation style. There’s also an incredible amount of foreshadowing in the first few arcs that get explained in much later arcs.
I agree, everyone says that it only gets good later but I thought it was great from the start. My hot take is that I think the beginning arcs in the anime are better than what we have currently
Wouldn't say that Arlong Park completely hooked me on the show, but it definitely highlighted the fact that One piece has its serious moments. Wild that seeing Nami's backstory did nothing for Charlie. While it's true that Water 7 is the top or one of the top arcs for the first half of the show, the idea that everything before it is bad is definitely a garbage take.
I don't blame you. It took me forever to get to Water 7. Once I got there, I caught up faaaast to episode 1035 (it was the latest episode released at the time I caught up) and I'm on my second rewatch now.
How could broski not think Luffy had character development after Enies Lobby? It's the arc where the crew gets challenged as a crew, not a traveling group of friends, and Luffy get challenged as an actual captain, not some adventurer with childish dreams just wandering around. He made the hard decision of kicking his BEST FRIEND off the crew because his opinions would endanger the safety of everyone else and Luffy's always had incredible empathy while being very blunt about it.
I think you have to look back at Luffy’s big moments and see that when he switches goober mode off, he’s so fun to watch. Arlong, Crocodile, Rob Lucci; these fights force him to zone in during the fight and realize what is at stake. It’s not just the fights either, it is also when his crew needs him. Throughout the entire series, any time a member of the crew or a future member of the crew is in need, he fights for their freedom. Nami in Arlong Park and Robin in Enies Lobby are the two biggest examples, but they happen more often than you think.
Yeah but he has to turn goober mode off, which means charlie would presumably go back to not enjoying his character until the next time he’s out of goober mode . If you don’t enjoy a character like 60-80% of the time it’s safe to say you don’t like that character
@@boopinoop4545idk man the goober man is still part of luffy's core of freedom and adventure, which pairs along with his serious freedom fighting. I get not liking dumbassery but man hating the whole character for it means something is not being understood
How can you hate luffy after things like giving nami his hat, or “say you want to live” or, the biggest one for me, luffy vs usopp? That was one of the hardest things he’s had to go through as a captain imo.
Tbh i also remember not liking Luffy as a character in the earlier Arcs ,as i usually compared him with other MCs like Naruto,Eren,Asta all were dumb but had something likeable, however after Sabaody, Marineford,Timeskip Luffy really grew a personality his existence his ties to the story and overall plot moving forward made him likeable

@@unironic-Fe-yThere's like dozens of other moments of him caring about his friends. He cared two of them up a long mountain, fought the world government over one and used the power of an afro to rescue another.
One major flaw with the anime in general is that it was constantly being produced while the manga was being made. There’s no breaks between seasons so that the next manga chapters can finish, which leads to some parts being dragged on for 20 episodes (AKA Luffy in the snake) so that the manga can get ahead of the anime
It speaks to the strength of the story that people actually watch the anime. When I read the manga I get how it’s the most popular manga of all time but I can’t fathom the people who watch the anime.
Its even worse now. They just stretch everything out so much with extra reactions and extra flashy stuff, which really destroys the pace. The anime these days is better to watch the canon clips of good manga moments on yt. You still have to play it on 1.25 speed tho
Im not too far into One Piece considering how long its been since i started watching (Ep 263) but One Piece has just got a grip on me now especially after i made it water 7. I felt so worn put from foxy pirates but water 7 was there to bring me right back especially because i finally got to see SogeKing and Ussop in general was really interesting this arc i cant wait for Luffy vs Lucci since their rematch is happening as of this comment being written.
This was me. I was so close to giving up after skypiea. My friend begged me to wait till water 7. I’m so glad I did. I’m on dressrosa now and I’m just so obsessed
Luffy’s development is significant but more human and grounded he doesn’t just completely change after something traumatic happens he does learn but he always slips up and it makes his character so much deeper and human than any other in the show
eh not really, he’s still his normal self, but yea he does become a bit more dependable but he is still doing things that gets him and his crew in trouble
@@dblevsTM- it’s actually his crew that gets him in trouble. Like literally any request the crew makes Luffy answers half of it except for the turning back parts and even then it gets out voted.
One Piece always had me from the start, personally (episode 1). It's not for everyone, but the main "hook" was "The Walk" from Arlong Park for me, where I saw just what this series was capable of, and then Water 7 was the moment One Piece reached true elevation for me. Glad to see Charlie's found his moment, even if it did take longer than expected.
You and me are in the same boat, I'm so hyped over OP these days after almost actively trying to avoid it for a lot of years, but I'm glad that I finally gave into it.
I can't wait for Charlie to get to Marineford, I 100% understand why he sees Luffy as annoying, so I'm interested in hearing what Charlie has to say once Luffy begins maturing and developing as a character from that arc forward
@@DJ-sn2wn it’s that situation of “expecting the characters to always be smart in anime” when the whole cast of characters are for the most part not really smart at all, they are just human, which makes One Piece so relatable
So weird that you committed to 300 episodes before you actually enjoyed it. I read it so my experience was different, but I was gripped from chapter 1 and enjoyed a lot of the East Blue saga. Baratia was the first arc that really got to me continue the series. The Aarlong Park is THE arc that decides if you’ll be a fan of the series.
I can’t imagine a show taking 300 episodes to get good. Like sailor moon is only 300 episodes, One piece took the entirety of sailor moons run to get good
@yamiyugi6031 It's all a matter of subjectivity. Some people like it from the start, some people think it gets good after 100, 300, 800 episodes, or whatever. And some fully catch up and don't like any of it (there are people like that, seriously). I say all this to state that I think that the show is good from the start, and I disagree that it takes that long to get good. It's about taste, perspective, and preference in storytelling. It doesn't have to be for everyone, but you say it like it's a fact that EVERYONE thinks it's bad till Ep.300.
Enies lobby was when i really started to like the show too, but it wasnt until marineford that i truly fell in love with it, after dressrosa it became my favorite show of all time, its definitely a slow burn but you fall more and more in love with it as you go
Honestly Robins whole story is one of the best/saddest next to Sanjis. Her best friend telling her "No ones born to be alone" speech while him and everyone she knows dies around her by the world government hits me HARD even know I get goosebumps... one of the best speech's in the show so far.
@@felixgutierrez993 It hits close for me. I bounced around in foster homes until a wonderful family took me in. I know how it feels to be rejected by everyone until finally someone accepts you.
The dude not dying in the nuke explosion is something i knew would be brought up somewhere and he's not the only one who didn't die when he cleary should have
i'm sad to hear that it took until Enies Lobby to finally rope you in, but i am delighted to hear that it DID. i was hooked in Arlong Park and a lot of the fans agree with me when i say Nami's Plea is a pivotal moment in the show, but i understand that it's not a show for everyone. either way, huge props to you for actually staying on the ride and legitimately keeping an open mind and waiting to see if the show spoke to you. im glad that it got there eventually! also Enies Lobby has always been my favorite arc and i doubt that will change until our goofy band of misfits finally makes it onto the final island and uncovers the greatest treasure in the world
I absolutely agree with you. To me, arlong parked really pulled me in with the emotions they up in. Before that, all bosses just seemed so boring and weak and I could really acre less about them but then arlong came along and really showed me how satifying it was for luffy to destroy him.
I started watching it recently and the crew have just landed in alabasta. So far I'm enjoying it and zoro, nami and new addition chopper are all great but genuine question, when do luffy and usopp get more fleshed out? so far I'm with Charlie that Luffy is BY FAR my least favourite character. He seemed more intelligent and emotionally mature as a child in his flashback then he does currently and his "always on" stupidity really takes away any tension the show tries to build if Luffy is in the scene. I enjoyed Usopps introduction and his compulsive lying to make others feel better and liven up his town was a neat switch-up on an otherwise negative characteristic but there has been so many moments already where it feels like he's resolved himself and is going to change and make more of an effort and then next episode he immediately reverts back. I plan on continuing the show egardless but I'd mostly like to know if this is something I'm gonna have to deal with throughout or if they actually have a character arc and become more likable people with more nuance to their character, especially Luffy who right now is just "hehe im stupid, I like meat and am stupidly strong" on NON STOP REPEAT. Hell Goku was dense but he was never as outright stupid like Luffy is sometimes which is saying something lmao.
@@reindogfan that's entirely fair honestly, I can see how Luffy looks one-dimensional early on. I would argue that very soon after Alabasta Luffy begins to realize that he has to take his journey much more seriously, as the main villain of Alabasta kinda fucks him up a bit 😂 As for Usopp, he has a much more hidden growth that's hard to see unless you really pay attention to who he is as a character. I don't want to say anything else because parts of it are pretty solid spoilers but I hope you enjoy the rest of your journey!
Props to you for putting up with 200+ episodes till you made it. Double props for joining team Zoro! Can't wait to see when Charlie sees the deaths he wants so badly. See you in the war arc!
Water 7 is the point where One Piece hits different is because that’s when the straw hat crew truly feels like they earned the title of pirate. It’s a lovely story. I love one piece… it’s worth the journey, especially right now.
Water 7 is definitely a turning point for people that don't enjoy one piece initially. Most of my friends who've started it definitely had a change in attitude during water 7 and marineford.
yeah those arcs are goated, i kinda went through the same experience, except i was enjoying it, but not ALOT, idek how i binged like 30+ eps every day even though it wasn't THAT good, def a turning point around water 7 One piece is def top 3 for me, the thing that ruins it for me is obviously pacing (manga pacing is fine tbh) and the fact that the start really didnt get me fully commited on watching it, watching the first 60 eps felt like a drag (they were not bad, just not that enjoyable) , and a bunch of other small stuff that is very subjective. i like other animes more, but one piece will definitely stay up there
One hard thing to grasp about One Piece given the pacing and the time it takes to watch but the crew has only been together about 6 months before the time skip, they do develop, water 7 is the first time development arc and it pays off, it continues to do so but going from not having any reason to like the character to them becoming one of your favorites is such a good feeling
@@ulrald8864 I have teared up a few times across a handful of anime, outside of that the only other type of media that has made me get the sniffles. Was the one scene in 'I am legend' where will smith has to strangle his dog to death. But outside of that no other movie, show, or game has done it.
Yeah a lot of His complaints about no stakes luffys character and no one getting killed off his reaction once he makes the time skip I look forward to it
Luffys development after enies lobby was a more important one imo, post marineford luffy learned he needed to be stronger, and found out the true scope of the world and how much stronger he needed to become, but enies lobby/water 7 taught luffy that he has responsibilities, being strong and beating up the strongest guy can’t solve everything, he needed to become someone they cud follow without hesitation, someone who would be their guide, which imo is the most important for luffy as his role as captain on his ship, which I think critikal majorly looks over in his watching of the series
@@K1_Trains I have serious doubts he'll be able to get through the Paramount War. He despises Luffy cause he can't stand his carefree and dense personality and there's literally like 200 episodes of just following Luffy by himself
The fact that you said you fell asleep during a lot of one piece is very understandable but also crazy to me, guess the better parts do come after the crew gets brook
Recently finished One piece and im a huge fan now I use to say that i would never rlly watch it or thats its boring but when i started it i was immediately hooked i love all arcs tbh but if i had to say Skypia and Wano really REALLY stood out to me im in love with that series
When I first watched One Piece I had the same sentiments, but now at episode 1069 and after reading the manga I really do appreciate the earlier episodes a lot more now
It took me like 3 years to get past episode 100, but now im nearly 600 deep this year alone (thanks one pace). It generally takes a lot for me to physically react to any movie/tv show, but I've cried and jumped for joy so many times over the last few months, amazing show
Luffy starts getting more serious whenever the situation is serious. I understand why you don't like him but I genuinely love his character, he is a good blend of serious and happy. He's the embodiment of happiness.
@@adam-lu4vr I kind of get him because I feel the same way towards goku in db super. He's way too immature and doesn't take anything seriously 90% of the time.
Luffy's personality is a hold over from all the other main protagonists of the time when the manga was originally written. A lot of Shonen anime had the dumb happy go lucky protagonist that loved to eat is just that now a days all those manga stopped and the only big characters that are still like that are Goku and Luffy. Times have definitely changed
I had the EXACT same experience. Everyone I know that I respect their opinions said One Piece is the best story ever told. I tried 4 times to start the anime, would get frustrated or fall asleep (wishing I could somehow catch up in my sleep lol). Made it a handful of episodes and gave up. Eventually I grinded it out while doing art and watching it in the background. By the time Alabasta finishes it stopped feeling like a grind and I started liking it. After Water 7 I started loving it. Im at Whole Cake now and obsessed. I cannot believe something so perfect exists. The more the back stories flesh out and more world building threads are tossed into the mix and more emotional scenes happen it becomes something that no one can deny. Its literally a masterpiece of story telling and yes even the beginning was necessary. You grow along WITH the characters. The SHOW itself matures while the characters do. And Luffy, for all his goofiness eventually becomes insanely beloved. Even though he IS stupid, his heart and passion intensifies and the fact that everywhere he goes people are flabbergasted with his child-like reckless abandon and his selfless defense of the down trodden and his ability to trust in “humanity” while everyone else has been so broken by the cruelty of the world and they cant help but admire someone like that and wholeheartedly believe he WILL BE THE PIRATE KING.
You simply have to remember. When it was first being made one piece was literally being watched by some if not most of us as KIDS. We basically grew up with this as our childhood anime and it grew alongside us. As a kid i watched one piece as one of my first anime ever with inuyasha and ive seen them grow with the times. Yeah its pretty silly early on and unpolished but as a kid back then i loved it. And its slowly grown into something comparable to my current tastes while not abandoning the original concepts.
Oda might not like killing off his characters, but when he does… it’s truly something special. So not having many deaths in the story makes the deaths that do happen much more emotional.
@@asoleieifretton7578 yeah, its REALLY hard for people to not know Ace dies before he dies these days. It's posted so often on every related One Piece, pretty much any OP Forum has decided that things are not spoilers unless it hasnt been animated yet.
Special my ass. Nothing is shocking about one piece‘s death scenes. Until now only WB and Ace died who we have seen basically nothing about. I mean the flash back came right after ace died which was the dumbest decision ever. We should know the characters first before they get killed off. Also in over 1000 episodes only 2 characters died and that in the same arc. And you call that special?
The fact u watched Luffy carry His Friends on drum island in that cold while his fingers bleed and before passing out says to save his friends. and u say he is only serious in fights. im speechless dude.
Nah it's a valid criticism. Luffy is absolutely idiotic sometimes to the point of jeopardizing his friends. I'm on my first watch now and I just started Skypiea so I definitely see what he is saying.
@@discomidget810 i agree he is an absolute idiot xD, but he is an idiot we can love. Moist hates him. anyway i just hope he gets to see he is not just a idiot as he continues on his op joruney.
Rare Luffy W. Aside for that and maybe a few other moments, he's pure stupidity. The whole reason Long Ring Long Land even happened was because he was being retarded and it's a complete waste of time considering the overarching plot.
Yeah I watched one piece up to whole cake and I caught up, then I’ve been reading since and have re read the manga many times it’s pacing is 20 times better than the anime
Water 7 is when there are some animation changes which really helps the show look less sleep inducing. Then a while later after the marineford arc there is a timeskip and the animation further changes. Then at episode 600 supposedly the animation changes again. It starts doing real good after a long while to keep you watching. Eating those veggies before the main course really pays off.
