Want increased performance, reliability and speed on the drag strip? This might be an option...
Intercoolers are certainly nothing new, but the benefits of a water to air vs air to air option can still be a little grey for some people. Andre irons this out for us all in relation to what one you want to go for on the drag strip and why, which includes improved aero!

On my GT4, and using the stock WTA intercooling core; I upgraded the front radiator to accomodate a newer, aluminum one. Added two fans to the front of it (pushing) that turn on when the stock system kicks the pump on (aka when a throttle signal is detected), AND added Water/meth injection to boot. Car was able to boost FAR past its stock limits, granting around 330awhp, and 350 ft/bs torque. Accompanying mods were: Full cat back including downpipe (3in). Greddy Airfilter. 3rd gen 3sge intake (or exhaust) cam. Adjusted cam timing and a boost controller. Also heat wrapped the intercooler, since it sat right above the cylinder head. Stock HP numbers put it at 245hp, with around 220-230 at the wheels. Car was daily driven for 2 years, and the intercooler pipes just about ALWAYS stayed cold to the touch. Oops, didnt mean pips, as the stock intercooler has short rubber (in my case poly) adapters that lead from the turbo (about 4in long) to the intercooler, and the one from the intercooler to the manifold (about 3in long). If you need a pic for reference, just google Celica GT4 engine bay. Temps never rose above what my buddies car ATA system would rise to, and the car was also put through: togue/autocross/drifting/light rallying. Only time temps really rose higher than ATA intercoolers, was during our late night runs around the island, where the car was usually continually driven hard for 2-4 hours straight. So it was kinda expected to be a bit high. I am posting this, since there is still so much ignorance and mis-information about WTA intercoolers and whether or not they can adapted to a street driven vehicle, or what its main cons are against ATA intercoolers. From my experience, the largest two "cons" against ATA setups are, complexity of design and weight (the amount of water in the system, and water pump, plus the addition of another radiator). The biggest pros are obviously reduced intake temps (like, REALLY LOW), far better response, torque and horsepower. Another pro, is that you can confuse everyone that looks at your car, when they wonder why you have two radiators, but seriously, the pros outweigh the cons in a street application. I believe they dont on race or sports competition situations (contrary to popular belief).

What about Turbo Lag? In a Drift Car, weight and the additional radiator may not be a big issue. I would prefer to waste 50whp but gain reaction time from the turbo.
@TheChrisey
@TheChrisey 3 года назад
Cirrect me if I'm wrong but front ducting isn't just there for the intercooler. Watercooler, oilcooler and the engine itself gets cooled by smashing through the air.
@tbas8741
@tbas8741 8 месяцев назад
the engine in modern cars will get no cooling from the ir passing over it, even then a normal water cooled engine will not see any cooling from moving through the air as there are no fins on the block and the block surface area is not enough. Even if you only had the engine idling and there was no bonnet/front bumper and engine was out in full airflow and then rolled down a long 5 mile/km Hill without any coolant circulating or radiator at all the engine would still overheat and cook simply idling and rolling down a hill at 60mph/100kph.

how big does the heat exchanger for the air to water intercoolers need to be? is it the same size as normal engine radiator?
@JohnDoe-mx1sq
@JohnDoe-mx1sq 2 года назад
Depends on the application. Larger is better. A unit for a drag racing is just keeping the water temp down so it doesn't melt all the ice. For street or road racing you will actually need a larger surface area than air to air. The good news is it can, and should be, much thinner. An AC condenser can work. Here is an upgraded unit for a BMW images.app.goo.gl/s3BayzJqpLHjDT8q9

People always say that the extra weight of a heat exchanger, water tank and water pump for an Air to Water intercooler is just too much. Bullsh*t, the weight is easily offset by making more power. Plus the extra weight and be location in places that will help the handling of traction of street cars.

1:05 - may not actually be a problem as an air-air charge cooler will also be placed to the front and they are less efficient to boot. Iced water is indeed MUCH colder, but at least as important is the thermal mass of the liquid - it takes much more heat energy to warm up than an air-filled air-air heat exchanger that, on the start line, is getting NO cooling air through it and, if building boost on a 2-step, that may be significant. Other advantages of air-water-air are the greatly simplified plumbing. The air-water section can be best designed for efficiency - pipe length, bend, diameter, etc. For the water-air heat exchanger (if used) they are much more efficient than air-air, smaller tanks (ends) are needed, pipework is of a much smaller diameter and bends aren't as important, so installation is much easier. As mentioned, this also makes them much easier to rear mount efficiently. [edit] Forgot, their increased efficiency also means they can be smaller and so more easily concealed for the stealth look and, with some creative work, may even allow integrating with the A/C system (like Chrysler did) to chill the cooling liquid, ready for when it is actually needed! :-)

Each has their respective applications as he said, there is a reason you dont see endurance cara use air to water coolers. On the drag strip it is only under pressure for 10 seconds or less, wont be as efficient over 24 hours. But i await someone to test this at the top level

@MafiaboysWorld
@MafiaboysWorld 5 лет назад
Has been done many years ago on a street car. One of my earliest memories of cars in the early 90s when I got into the scene in Sydney was a Toyota T18SE with a 3T-GTEU running a freon to air intercooler named TMINUS, was also featured in Fast Fours. 👍
@KingOath
@KingOath 5 лет назад
The main issue is that you need to run a mechanical compressor to circulate the refrigerant, which takes power away from the engine to run. But this could be done with a large enough electric motor. Also, it would be quite difficult to engineer a refrigeration system capable of creating such a large air temperature drop in a single pass across the evaporator. The system would need to be highly specialised and very powerful, or designed with multiple cooling stages. Most standard refrigeration equipment is only able to produce a relativly small air temperature drop across the evaporator and relies on the same air being recirculated over it multiple times before that air is brought down to the desired temperature. I’m certainly not saying it can’t be done, but I would say that in order to achieve better results than one can already achieve with regular intercooling designs, it would have to be a very expensive, bulky and complex system that would require extensive R&D and a lot of trial and error to get working correctly
@MafiaboysWorld
@MafiaboysWorld 5 лет назад
