V3 and under all looked like such highballs. I find it hard to enjoy climbing hard when I'm more afraid of the landing
@BenClimber
@BenClimber 3 года назад
Yeah I understand that, but I actually do love highballs for the exact opposite reason. Like I’m not afraid of the landing when I’m on them. Sometimes on other climbs, I’ll accidentally start thinking about “trying not to fall” more than actually climbing. I’ll get this doubt about whether I should even try the move, like if it’s worth it, but when you’re in the right frame of mind and in the no-fall zone of a problem you’re super psyched about, that thought doesn’t even get entertained. That’s when my mind is really clear and I feel like I climb the smoothest. But again, have to be in the right frame of mind and it has to be the right problem. I’ve back off plenty of problems when it didn’t feel right.

Nice vid dude. Just started learning to climb in the gym and can’t wait till I can do some real boulders
@BenClimber
@BenClimber 3 года назад
Right on! Climbing outdoors is definitely different. Main thing I think is to come at it with no expectations that the grades outdoors will match the grades you’re climbing in the gym. Or that one climb will feel as hard as another climb of the same grade for that matter. There can be a lot of history to outdoor climbs that dictate the grades: times and expectations change and climbs can change too if holds break or get worn away. I highly recommend Joshua Tree: one, because the grades are often stout so even V0s can be rewarding and two, because even if you get shut down on every problem you try you’re still outdoors in a beautiful area.

But for the lesser known problems, that's such a big question as there's so many climbs in the peak district so I'd have to say pretty much anywhere besides Burbage South Valley or Stanage Plantation (amazing bouldering locations but can be really popular) - I personally like Cratcliffe for the location as it's right near Robin Hoods Stride and it's in the woods

Way late but, how do you like the SKWAMAs? I'm trying to decide between those and the Solution Comps to upgrade from my Solutions.
@BenClimber
@BenClimber 2 года назад
I love the skwamas. Until recently, they’re basically the only thing I boulder in. I have bought at least 4 pairs and resoled all of them until I couldn’t resole them anymore. They just fit my feet really well, like near perfect out of the box. Plus they are cheaper than a lot of the other aggressive la sportivas. So yea I can’t recommend them enough, but obviously it’s all about what fits your feet. I’m going to be really sad if they ever stop making them.

@BenClimber
@BenClimber 3 года назад
Negative sloper? Like an slopey undercling? Not really. The holds early on are good and the hold on the left side of the hueco halfway up is more of a side pull. But yea some of the grades are pretty arbitrary haha

How do you get down from these?
@BenClimber
@BenClimber 2 года назад
Simple answer: most have a walk off or down climb on the back of the boulders that's obvious. Path of least resistance. Longer answer: -0 "False Up 20": down climb a lieback crack called "Descent Crack" -1 "False Hueco": easy scramble down the back, either climber's left or right works. -2 "White Rasta": climb down a slab on the back until a ramp that leads back left toward the landing area. -3 "Slashface": (honestly don't remember well, I spent exactly one attempt at this boulder) think I just climbed down a good set of holds. -4 "Stem Gem": climbed down the back of the boulder until low enough to drop off. -5 "JBMFP": down climb an arete with good edges called "Descent Route". -6 "All Washed Up": stayed up high and traversed left for a while until a series of large stepped boulders lead to the ground.

the v5 looks better/safer than the v2/3/4..
@BenClimber
@BenClimber 3 года назад
Joshua definitely has some classic highballs. Only adds to the fun! Most have a safe landing though. White Rasta is really the only one here without a flat landing, and luckily slashface’s holds ease up considerably near the top (the V3 moves are basically the first ones). I wouldn’t really call JBMFP (the V5 problem) a low ball by the way.

Solid bouldering here, fun to watch. Brings back fond memories. The music is not working for me. I took a class at Joshua many years ago,, was a great 3 day experience. The desert is beautiful in its own way.
@BenClimber
@BenClimber 3 года назад
Thanks! Happy you enjoyed the climbing, and I know what you mean about the desert. It gets more beautiful and wonderful the more time you spend there. As for the music, you’re not the first to complain haha. I have to admit it was a selfish choice to include them. Those two songs are part of a playlist that I always listened to on the long drive into Joshua. So I associate them pretty strongly with those day trips, and it just reminds me of that anticipation and excitement. Thanks again for watching.
