Primers have a different chemical composition that normal paints. They are supposedly designed to 'grip' or adhere to the surface better, but the different formula doesn't make it ideal for a standard layer paint. So we have different paints rather than a jack of all trades.
Cold colours coverage isn't something that depends that much on manufacturer. By their nature violets, blues and greens cover better than oranges, reds and yellows. It's just how the pigments work.
Army painter has an extremely satin finish. The black is named Matt Black, not Matte Black. The spelling is different, so they will always have a little gloss to them. The complete set comes with matte varnish, so you can mix it in or layer it on to give a matte finish.
Matt black and matt white are the names for the black and white. Seems that used to be very mat but due to reformulation they are more glossy. When you varnish it with satin varnish, the effect vanishes. Atleast for the old range. Citadel paints aren't bad but their pot design is just horrendous. I have so many citadel paints that I only used once or twice that are unuseable, money that is wasted. :( I still had very old, old paints from the army painter (10+ years) and some still worked.
A brand new pot of Citadel is certainly annoying to scoop paint from, but compare them when they're about two or more years old. It's not even a question that dropper bottles are preferable over the course of the life of the paint.
@@radshoesbro Or just take care of them properly. I know there's plenty of people out there with 20 and 30 year old citadel paints in use, but don't see people with other brands more than a couple years old.
@@afk1sec410 Maybe because AK Interactive, Army Painter or Scale 75 aren't 20 and 30 years old companies, eh? Old Citadel pots were superior, they could hold paint fresh for years. Modern pots are ultimate failure and are objectively inferior to bottles used by any other company. Just take care of them properly and use a needle.
Good comparison over-all. Hard to do a perfect one when AP Fanatic has 30 greens (counting teals) in five sets / triads. I am going to compare AP Fanatic with Vallejo starting next week. Chose to start with a pair of triads that I use a lot and have seen other use. AP even did a DA Redemptor so that made my choices a lot simpler as a Dark Angels player :) Hope it delivers on the promises because it would be so nice with reliable triads when you layer miniatures but the metals... yeah, those interest me a log, especially "Cobalt Metal" and "Rough Iron". The "matt black" looks like a "satin black" to me on camera. It hit me some time later that it could be a bad case of paint and medium separation. I would give it a long and strong shake before I try using that one again. I had this issue with a Vallejo Black in the past, could be the same issue.... because it is strange if that is supposed to be matt.

yes it will. The most recent paint I bought from GW was used to paint 1 model. Sat on my shelf for about a year to two year and its completely dried out. I tried stiring it with a cocktail stick but it's just a solid mass. GW paint pots are the worst. Only reason I bought it was to match my friends army colour for a painted model for his birthday. I won't ever make that mistake again. Saying all that, I still have 1 GW paint pot from the 90s that is still kicking. I think I bought it in 1995. It's one of the original round tall pots that seal like an absolute mofo. Every time you open one of those old pots they glue themselves shut again. So hard to open, but they never dry out.... until the lid finally breaks. Which is what happened to all the other old pots I've had.
