Good Morning 🌞 Melinda - Surrealistic Pillow is one of my all time favorite albums & I love the original master recording pressing. The Marty Balin tracks Today & Coming Back To Me are my favorites. I love the " echo " on the album. Have a wonderful day 😊
I'm cetainly not an audiophile but really enjoyed watching this video and learning what makes various pressings wonderful. Quite a selection you have there. Thank you for sharing.
I have the Analog Productions 45 rpm pressings of all of The Doors records a while back. Glad I got that out of the way! I'm a fan of Anne Sophie Mutter so it's nice to see Deutsche Grammophon selling vinyl. Thanks! Fall has arrived. There's that unmistakable chill in the air.
Yes, fall is arriving. ♥️ I am enjoying the records I have bought from these special Deutsche Gramophone releases. They sound incredible. Thank you and take care.
Ooh thank you for walking us through your fav audiophile records, love the variety including classical. I took a jazz history class Yusef Lateef in 2001 at UMass Amherst. I wish I knew then how great of a musician he was.
Wow! I would love to take a history class like that. I watch documentaries here and there but a classroom environment would be wonderful. Thank you for your kind words. Have a great day! ♥️🤗
@@MelindaMurphy I didn't know at the time we were among the greats. He had lots of stories. One he told, and I may have the details wrong since Charlie Parker died in 1955 but anyway, Yusef said he played a gig or practice with Charlie Parker that went late into the night and he gave him a ride home to his place. On the way back to his own home he realized Charlie left his smokes in his car so he drove back to give them to him and then upon arrival back at Charlie's place despite being already soo late in the evening, Charlie was still up practicing his saxophone late into the morning
Hi Melinda, great video! 👍 Since discovering your Channel last month, I've been really enjoying your content! So, just periodically working through all your previous videos! 😊👍
My favorites are definitely all my Tone poets, but I do have the 50th anniversary of CSNY Deja Vu ($100.00 version), it blows me away every time I play it. It is my reference record. Great video as always!
Deja Vu is a fantastic record. I'm sure the 50th anniversary copy is a great one. The Tone Poets have been wonderful. Blue Note has really helped me build a terrific jazz collection at an affordable price. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗
Great selections! Band on the Run on CBS Mastersounds was a good surprise. I'll have to get that one. I don't know if I could list off my top audiophile LPs. Too many to narrow it down to a few, but I do wish I had the BS&T set. I know that's got to be awesome! Cheers.
Every copy I have owned of Band on the Run is great but I give the nod to this half speed mastered version. It just has something extra. Lol. The Blood Sweat and Tears One Step is a beautiful record. If you ever find a good deal on it, you wouldn't regret having it. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
Melinda, thanks for this wonderful video. Among the records you mentioned I have the UHQR of "Kind of Blue"; the limited-edition (1000 copies) of Yusef Lateef's "Eastern sounds" (I have no idea how I lucked out on getting that, but I did!); the one-step of Carol King's "Tapestry"; and the one-step of "Blood Sweat and Tears." What will strike you as strange is that I have not yet listened to any of them! At first I told myself, after I bought each of them, that I was waiting to get a better turntable (with cartridge and phono amp) and integrated amplifier. Well, I've done those things. So now I'm waiting for the weather to get milder so that I can listen to a whole record without the air conditioner or the heater coming on. I saw Blood Sweat and Tears perform the music from this album at Blossom Music Center in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, in the summer of 1969, when I was sixteen years old. It's an amphitheater venue with a large roofed area near the stage, and an unroofed area on a rising hillside, which is where I sat with my older sister and her fiancé, under the evening sky. I was amazed that the sound was just as good as it was on the album. That was a memorable experience. Just a side note, you said that you love the 70s sound of "Blood Sweat and Tears," but the album is actually from 1968.
I guess it was the early 70's when I was listening to Spinning Wheel and all of those wonderful songs. It reminds me of the early 70's for personal reasons and that would have been the better thing to say. 😀 What a wonderful memory of seeing such a great band on a beautiful night. That must have been incredible. I hope when you feel the time is right, you open and play those incredible records. You are going to thoroughly enjoy them. 🤗♥️ Thank you and take care.
I have to agree with some of the comments I love my original pressings which I enjoy playing when I can! And yes the clicks and pops strangley bring back memories ! My dad who passed at a young age had a love of classical music and Pink floyd!! He got me into classical through his vinyl collection!! Another great video Melinda!! Cannot go wrong with your choices!!
Thank you! I'm so sorry for the loss of your dad. Losing him at an early age would be tough. I love that classical music and Pink Floyd reminds you of him. Take care and have a great day!
Awesome records Melinda. The Doors LA woman is one of my favorite albums. And I only have it on a cassette I brought in 1992. I'll have to buy a vinyl LA Woman one day. Thanks for the video Melinda.
It's a great album. The Analog Productions version is 45 rpm and a little pricey at $60 but it sounds absolutely incredible. You would never need another copy again. Thank you and take care.
Melinda, Thanks for the "Band on the run" version recommendation. Didn't know this pressing before and just bought it in NM condition. Killer sounding version🙂
I only have 3 Mo-Fi records, Miles Davis On The Corner, Beatles "White Album" and just recently picked up Beatles Abbey Road. Love all 3. One 3 record set I can think of that is not labeled as audiophile but sure sounds like it is Frank Zappa's Joe's Garage Act I, II and III. Both the originals (single and double LPs) on Zappa records or the mid 80's box set on Barking Pumpkin records sound fantastic. My German KISS Music from The Elder Half- Speed master is pretty killer too. I have the Creatures Half-Speed but I haven't opened it yet! Great video and take care!
I like your description of how to enjoy the Dean Martin record. That made me want to listen to it. Band on the Run and Surfer Girl have to sound amazing I bet. Even my copies sound good so I can only imagine how wonderful your copies sound. Oh man I bet “The Last Resort “ sounds amazing on that version of Hotel California. Ha! Look at you making that joke before showing Blood, Sweat, and Tears! Good one👍. The lighter side of Melinda. You are the second person I watched today in the VC who was wearing a jean jacket. I think I need to dig mine out 😁 Wonderful video Melinda that makes me want to listen to some of these and be on the lookout for if any of these drop in price. Have a great week!
Hi Gary! The Last Resort sounds beautiful on this One Step. It's just incredible. It would be very nice if some of these records would go on sale. 🤗♥️ I love the song "You Make Me So Very Happy." When I hear that song, it suddenly feels like the early 70's when I would hear it and "Spinning Wheel." It's about time to grab that jean jacket. Fall is in the air. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗
Some of my fav audiophile copies are a quiex Neil Young's Prairie Wind. Much like the legend of Zeppelin 2 Ludwig pressing, it will skip the needle on lesser set ups, the bass lives large on Prairie Wind and the songs are magic. I also quite enjoy all of my Analog Production CCR titles. I think I picked my favorite 3 but in hindsight, I probably should have gotten them all. Those are the standouts. My copy of the Reservoir Dogs soundtrack also stands out for just how absolutely dead quiet it is between tracks, although I don't know offhand the exact pressing. I thoroughly enjoyed this one Melinda, nice work and nice choices. I'll be searching out the viability vs personal desirability ratio on at least a few of your picks. Cheers!
Thank you for the kind words. I also wish I had picked up the Analogue Productions CCR albums. At least you do have a few. That box set is so expensive now. 😳 Thank you and take care.
Some excellent choices, Melinda! If you don’t already have it (and it’s still available), treat yourself to the Analogue Productions 45-RPM version of Surfer Girl. You won’t regret it!
I will look into it. I can only imagine how good the 45 rpm version sounds. Unfortunately, the Beach Boys albums are no longer being pressed. What they have now is all they will have. Thank you for the suggestion. Have a terrific day! ♥️🤗
I have mostly First Pressings of the LPs you mentioned which were mastered by greats like George Marino, Bernie Grundman and the engineers at Columbia, Atantic, Capitol, Parlophone, Decca and RCA Victor so I was never attracted to the expensive MoFis and One Steps etcetera - I am attracted to the box sets of Blood Sweat and Tears, Pink Floyd & The Eagles - those look like they're worth the price to me - as usual Melinda you entertain all of us with your impeccable knowledge - your down-to-earth manners and your awesome beauty❤- See You Next Week!
Original pressings mastered by those legendary mastering engineers are awesome. I also enjoy what MoFi and Analogue Productions are putting out for us. Sometimes it's easier to grab one of these amazing reissues because the originals are hard to find in clean condition. You really can't go wrong when it comes to vinyl. I'm thankful for the choices. Thank you for the kind compliments. I really appreciate it. ♥️🤗 Take care.
Melinda magnificent great albums you picked I luck up on the Craft Yusef Lateef and when I got it it blew me away it’s mastered so perfectly. I agree with you about the Pink Floyd Dark side the 30th Anniversary is my go to always for that album .
You were extremely lucky to have been able to get that Yusef Lateef album. It was sold out in a matter of seconds. Lol. It's wonderful and I am thrilled to have it. I did have to trade a valuable Taylor Swift album to get it but I have no regrets. Thank you and have a great day. ♥️🤗
Harvest by Neil Young on a really good clean piece of vinyl sounds fantastic. I’m just not a fan of his music, but the LP harvest is an amazingly good sounding album.
Thanks for sharing your favs. I have a few of them and heartily agree with you. I freaking LOVE the Blood Sweat & Tears one-step. Like you, I’ve been fond of the music since early childhood, and the music really does hold up beautifully. (Ditto for Suite Judy Blue Eyes and Beginnings). The one step version sounds incredible. To any of your subscribers looking to build their audiophile classical collection, I would recommend the RCA Living Stereo titles reissued by Analogue Productions and pressed by QRP. They cost $40 for a 33rpm LP and sound stunningly beautiful, despite being recorded in the late 50s. For now, there are about 40-50 titles in stock. The Deutsche Grammaphone Original Source Series you mentioned are pressed in limited quantities and sell out after a couple months. I think the RCAs sound better, too. Thanks for another great video!!
I have the ORG 2 LP 45 RPM of that blood sweat and tears record it's a mind blower how good it sounds. Also I just listened to that doors record you have behind you two days ago the analog productions Doug Sax 45 RPM remaster listening to riders on the Storm amazing I was blown away. I forgot how great that song is and how wonderful it sounds on that record.
Both albums sound terrific. They are perfect audiophile records. ♥️ I wish I had been into vinyl when those older music labels were putting out albums. I admire you so much. You share great advice and have so many tremendous records. It's great for us newer collectors to know what older pressings are out there. Thank you and take care.
@@MelindaMurphy thank you too Melinda, there are so many folks out there that have our knowledge but they keep it to themselves. we put ourselves out there so we can share our experience to benefit others. I appreciate you very much and thanks for all your encouraging words.
,,,,, P. S. .........your right, spinning wheel was magical when i heard that on the radio,,it really does take me back,,,spot on description of that song,,.i mean,,way back, imo=(how about light my fire, doors,,,pictures of matchstick men)
I would love to discuss the biggest news about the Atlantic 75. There are so many great titles coming out. I also love what Rhino is doing right now. It's never been a better time for new vinyl releases. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
Hello Melinda! It is great fun to see your diversity in music appreciation. Classical music is very underrated. I’ve got a dozen+ of my favourites on vinyl. They’re not audiophile records but the pressing are from the late 50’s to mid 80’s and are really well done : Pachelbel - Canon and gigue Tchaikovsky-Piano concerto No 1 Barber - Adiago for strings Bach - Air Debussy - Clair de lune Chopin - Nocturne No 9 Grieg - Morning Tchaikovski - Swan lake Strauss - Blue danube Holst - The planets Ravel - String quartet M35 Wagner - Die valkyrie Vivaldi - Four seasons Beethoven - Ode to joy I can think of 5-10 more that I would want to own , but one step at a time , ladies and gentlemen , please. Take care. /R (A at work)
Very nice! I just also picked up a Debussy album and it's top notice. Thank you for the kind words. I do like a lot of genres. Have a wonderful rest of your week. 🤗♥️
I enjoyed your video, as usual. I have the Speakers Corer of Toto 4 but I've not played it yet. Some of your other titles I'm not familiar with. I will do my diligence to see what I like. Once again nice video.
Hey Mike! You definitely need to check out that Toto 4. I would be curious to know about it. I love that album. Thank you and I'll talk to you soon. Take care.
I collect mostly obscure psych nowadays, that these labels would never touch. However, I have bought a few AP and MOFI reissues over the years of the classics I absolutely love (and usually own many different pressings of).
Very good list, Melinda. On AP, Time Out and Getz Gilberto both in 45 are sublime, worth checking. And in jazz, never to late to take the leap of fate and try MMJ
I agree that they are wonderful. I have the 33rpm version of Getz Gilberto. I can only imagine how good the 45 rpm version is. I almost bought a MMJ this past week. It was a very cool Horace Silver album but it had a big scratch so I had to pass. 😪 Thank you and take care.
As for my choice of Audiophile recordings.. of the ones Ive listened to: Wayne Shorter’s ETC (Tone Poet). Side 2 is just an amazing ride. The drums.. the mesmerizing sax. Stunning.
You showed a lot of great records! I don’t have the one-step but the Blood, Sweat and Tears record, I feel is an essential record that all music lovers should have in their collection. I had multiple copies including an original that sounded amazing! When I sold off a majority of my records, I kept my ORG 45 rpm pressing which is probably between all of the ones I owned the best sounding version. I adore that album and really wish I could afford the one-step version. I also own that album on MoFi SACD as well as the Audio Fidelity SACD. Have I mentioned I LOVE the BS&T album? 😊
Haha! I share the love. It's such a wonderful record that takes me back in time. The horns sound incredible and the songs are fantastic. I'm sure you also have a fantastic copy. The ORG records have a fantastic reputation. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
My gosh Melinda , i just had to chime in bout the Dean Martin record you presented ...... such a cool recording - sounds incredible . I,m a big " Dinno " fan for life ( Movie s / television and of course Deans music Thanx Melinda , Luv this channel , your the best ! 😊💯
Mofi’s aren’t really my thing (they’re not readily available in the UK) but I love your take on them & enjoy your videos a great deal. Keep doing what you’re doing!
I have the original of that BS&T, but I remember it from high school so I double-checked, and it was released in 1968. Ahead of its time. Haven't played it in a while, though. The only audiophile record I can remember off the top of my head is "Time Out" by the Dave Brubeck Quartet; it was a Classic Records release and I remember how amazing it sounded on my previous system; the whole thing was live, in my room! Can't imagine how it would sound on my current system, as the speakers are the only holdover from the previous one. There's a Telarc of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra doing Stravinsky and Borodin I haven't played, too, and a MoFi Billie Holiday, "Body and Soul;" don't remember how it sounds. If the records you showed sound anything like my "Time Out," you're having a blast with them. I continue to live in the vinyl world vicariously through your videos.
I'm sure your copy of Time Out is wonderful. I have the AP versions and it's great. I can only imagine how great that MoFi Billie Holiday album is. I'm kinda jealous of that one. Lol. 😀 Thank you and take care.
100% agree with your choices.. I have everyone you’ve mentioned except for a love supreme by John Coltrane. I have it on vinyl but not the UHQR for some reason I just can’t get into that album and and the fact that it cost 150 bucks. Thank you Melinda
For the price, it does need to be an album you truly love. I have passed on many UHQR'S because the music wasn't my thing. Lol. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
Great video love the Blood, Sweat & Tears album by far the best Blood, Sweat & Tears album they ever made I do have the original Columbia Records 2 eyes pressing and I see a bunch of those albums at the antique mall in my local town and I also have The Beach Boys Surfer Girl and Dean Martin both in original pressing.
The early pressings of those albums would be very cool. They are hard to find clean these days due to their age and wear and tear. Wonderful records. ♥️ Thank you and take care.
Such a great video and great pics Melinda. Beach Boys, Donald Fagan, Band on the Run! A big fan of Marty Balin, his vocals on Miracles does not get any better. I noticed you showed that classical record, have you ever listened to Max Richter? Love his stuff and would think that would be a great gateway into classical. 😊
This is a nice change of pace away from Russell Brand and Danny Masterson. I'm thankful for channels like yours. I know what you mean about Jazz records. I'm just happy my copies of Take Five and Bitches Brew don't skip.
It does seem like there are a lot of bad things happening out there. Thank goodness for music. You have two jazz classics. Thank you and have a great day! 🤗♥️
Its amazing to me what sounds best on vinyl. Some more expensive, thicker brand new vinyl can be amazing. But i also have records so thin and floppy from the eighties which defy the laws of audiophile physics. Just amazing. Lol Cheers
Great video Melinda! That AP Beach Boys Mono Surfer Girl is mind blowing. I Totally agree that the 30th Anniversary Dark Side of the Moon is Absolutely incredible too! It Definitely beats the current Grundman pressing by a landslide! That pressing of The Cars beats the crap out of All previous pressings! And I Have done the A/B comparisons with Mofi and the OG. This Rhino HiFi wins hands down. When picking my favorite “audiophile” pressings I’d have to say All of my Analog Productions albums (especially Beach Boys and Buddy Holly) and Pink Floyd Dark Side 30th anniversary. Hard to choose really cuz I have some Amazing pressings. Thanks have a great day 😊
I do love The Cars album. It's a great album to begin with and then the sound quality is incredible. Kevin Gray did a great job with it and Dark Side of the Moon. These companies are doing a great job with these titles. ♥️ It's such a great time for vinyl reissues. Thank you and take care.
I Too Remember The Early Days Hearing Spinning Wheel On An 8 Track Tape My Father Had...It Also Appeared On BLOOD SWEAT & TEARS Greatest Hits From 1972...I Have That 1968 Self Tilted Original Pressing LP That Purchased From The Flea Market And The Debut: Child Is The Father To The Man~Also From 1968...Other Than Spinning Wheel...My Most Favorite Track Is: Sometimes In Winter...Performed By Guitarist: Steve Katz...If I Could Meet Him~Id Shake His Hand And Thank Him For Writing A Track About My Favorite And Best Most Splendid Season Of All: Winter... yea classical music aint for everyone; however i respect your musical choices beautiful melinda. billy joel an innocent man awesome record . takes me back to 1983 when i was in middle school 😂 . almost 40 years ago. . the cars excellent band. RIP Ric ocasek and Benjamin Orr. great video as always beautiful melinda
Thank you for the kind words. An Innocent Man was played as a slow song back at my high school dances. ♥️ I remember all of those songs fondly. The Cars were so incredible. It's hard to believe that they are both gone. 🥲 Thank you and take care.
They say Rudy Van Gelder's house was too small for the piano, they were wrong on Lateef- Eastern Sounds, thanks Mrs. Murphy for this beautiful record! This will my best record tonally to buy! To me, the original vinyl Billy Joel- Piano man, is one of the best recorded vinyl that I have ever heard. The original Paul McCartney-Ram, has great sound. The UQHR Miles Davis-Kind Of Blue, is one of the best sounding records I've heard. I am going to try to find the older MFSL records to listen to. But I have heard many of the newer versions of MFSL vinyl, & here is my list of the best of them, starting at the top in order. I love the original David Crosby-If I could remember My Name, but everyone I know says the MFSL version of it is the best sounding MFSL record that MFSL ever made. Nest is the 2 Akan Parson MFSL records. But the MFSL & the Analogue Productions Alan Parsons-Eye in the Sky, remasters didnt use the original analog tapes that couldnt be found. Next is the Santana MFSL records. Another much improved with less distortion is the vinyl MFSL Beck- Sea Change, but if you want to save $500, instead buy the MFSL cd Beck-Sea change that sounds 99% as good as the vinyl version of it sounds. Mrs. Murphy likes classical, I bet she doesnt know that orchestras dont use saxophones, because they sound too good to be used in orchestras. Here is great sounding vinyl that was released years after the cds were released. Ry Cooder-Meeting by the River, that is 100% analog record. The best recorded record I've heard. Next is. Nils Lofgren-Acoustic Live, the most dynamic acoustic guitar I've heard. Next is. Wilco- Being There. This is a different category now. The Grateful Dead - Live/Dead (Vinyl, 1969), is one of the greatest sounding albums I've heard. One of the best sounding piano & best seller piano is Windham Hill, George Winston- December. George Winston just died. Another category. Some great sounding guitar not found on vinyl, but found on cd is: Michael Hedges-Oracle. Bill Frisell With Dave Holland & Elvin Jones. Mrs. Murphy was talking about speakers. The best speakers under $1,000 are Canadian PSB-B1 speakers that were $200 new, but just discontinued, but found used on Ebay. These were the world's best selli9ng audiophile speakers, that were Stereophiles speakers of the year for 2 separate years. Stereophile reviews the world's best speakers, but named these speakers, speakers of the year. These speakers are less bright than other speakers.
Thank you for so much great advice. I wish I could go back in time and pick up the Abraxas One Step and the Sea Change MoFi. They are way too expensive now. I agree that Piano Man is a gorgeous record. Thank you and take care. 🤗♥️
Ugh... I can't stand jazz, but I adore your channel. When you talk about your favorite rock albums, go into detail about them, I'm mesmerized. When you do talk about "jazz" I still listen, but I'm just not into jazz. Thank you, though, for taking time out of your day to do this channel for all of us record fans! Btw, my mom was crazy over Dean Martin! 😁🤘🏻
I understand why your mom loving Dean Martin. ♥️ Thank you for still tuning in even when I am talking jazz. Lol. I do have several other rock and pop audiophile albums that I really enjoy. Thanks again and take care. 😀
I get where you’re coming from, but there are several sub genres of jazz, some of which you may like. I’m not super into hard bop, for example, but like artists like Bill Evans and Vince Guaraldi are quite accessible.
Many great choices there, Melinda - I especially concur about the Dylan Mo Fi records - I tend to think of Bringing it all Back Home, Return to Highway 61 and Blonde on Blonde as a single quadruple album - can never play one without the others. Have you come across Chesky Records, I wonder? They make very high quality recordings, although they don't put nearly enough of them onto vinyl. Worth checking their catalog on-line - Melissa Menago's 'Little Crimes' with her great version of Cohen's Hallelujah is a wonderful listen.
I'm not familiar with Chesky records. I will have to check them out. Dylan could do no wrong at that time in his career. All of those records are incredible. Thank you and take care.
I bought that Blood Sweat and Tears One-Step a few months back and it is fabulous! I thoroughly enjoy it, however Hotel California is fabulous at times, and other times I find it grating on my nerves! I guess listening to music has to depend on the mood! Cheers
They both sound amazing to me. I understand that some people say they never need to hear Hotel California again because they are tired of it. Lol. The music is so good that I still enjoy it. Thank you and take care.
Did a comparison of the Cars Rhino vs Mo-Fi. The Rhino is has more dynamic range (louder stuff gets louder, and quieter parts get softer), where the the MoFi has a fatter sound. If I'm cranking it, the Rhino delivers. For more moderate levels the MoFi is nice to have. The Mofi Cars record that really blows me away is their Candy-O pressing. Props to Heartbeat City and Shake It up too. Well worth getting those. Just picked up an original pressing of Door to Door, and it's magnificent. There's so little surface noise, it may be the quietest record I own.
I have all of the MoFi records by The Cars. I really enjoy them very much but that Rhino album is really good too. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I may have to break out both of those albums tonight. 😀 Thank you and take care.
The Allman Brothers Band at Fillmore East. I bought the audiophile version in the early 1980s. It is on an audiophile label that I don't think exits anymore called Nautilus SuperDiscs. Anyway, it sounds superb.
That would be a great record to have. ♥️ I just saw a Nautilus Super disc version of a Bee Gees album the other day. I wanted to buy it but it was a little pricey. I love the Allman Brothers. No doubt it sounds wonderful. Thank you and take care.
Other than the 45rpm Doors albums, I really don’t play too many of my top notch audiophile albums as much. Sometimes they are definitely a nice treat to put on though. The UHQR Kind of Blue 45rpm is unreal. I bet that Coltrane is as well. Recently, I’ve been enjoying the reward of finding a 1st pressing of some older albums and sometimes they can be mind blowing as well. I bet that 30th anniversary of Dark Side has to be fantastic! The classical albums that Chad reissues are an amazing treat too! You almost need those quiet pressings for classical.
I have a hard time finding original or early classical albums that are clean enough to enjoy. I have a few of the AP versions and they are great. The UHQR of A Love Supreme is as good in sound as Kind of Blue. They are both classics. Thank you and take care. ♥️🤗
My first audiophile recordings that I bought new was the 202 Newvelle Records "New Orleans Collection" my favorite of the four is Irma Thomas "Love Is The Foundation" NVN0001. The other three artists in this collection are all pretty good too. Ellis Marsalis, Little Freddie King and Jon Cleary. These came out in 2020, last I heard they still had some.
Hi Melinda, there is a great album by Art Pepper that has been issued by Analogue Productions. It is called The Intimate Art Pepper. So cool and so classy.
An Innocent Man is my favorite Billy Joel album, I would love to find an affordable MoFi copy but for now my original will have to do. I don’t have many MoFi or Analog Production records but the ones I do have I think are phenomenal! I hoping to see some more of my favorite titles get the the audiophile care!
I recently visited Mike at The In Groove when seeing Metallica in Phoenix, and picked up “Moanin’” by Art Blakey from Blue Note, which he said was the album that got him into jazz music, and it has become a favorite of mine, “A Charlie Brown Christmas” was the album that got me into jazz just two years ago, so fairly new still, but very stoked to add another Blue Note to my collection😎👌🥁
Moanin' is a fantastic record and is Mike's favorite jazz record. I hope to be able to go to his store someday. That would be fun. Vince Giraldi is a great introduction to jazz music. I love the Charlie Brown music as well. Thank you and take care.
Avalon is a stunning album. The band were on the verge of splitting up during that. Each of the three main members would record separately with Ferry having the final say on what made the cut.
Another couple...Alison Krauss...what a voice!...and that band, although that's changed. Forget About It...and New Favorite. If you can play Choctaw Hayride and not feel the urge to smack your volume control you better check your pulse. Great music and very nicely recorded.
I have the Mofi and CBS Mastersound pressing of Toto IV. Mofi takes the cake! I agree, CBS Mastersounds can be hit or miss. The Dire Straits Mofi's can't be beat! Another favorite Mofi pressing is Queen The Game. They did a superb job on this release. Have to mention, Analogue Productions pressing of Pet Sounds is a masterpiece!!
If I ever find a deal on the MoFi of Toto 4, I will grab it. 😀♥️ They have done a great job with Dire Straits, Miles Davis, Billy Joel, and Bob Dylan. I also agree that AP's Pet Sounds is stunning. Thank you and enjoy your weekend. ♥️🤗
YAY... U Have BLOOD SWEAT & TEARS 2nd LP...ABSOLUTELY SPLENDID...I SO Can't Wait Till U Get BLOOD SWEAT & TEARS 3[1970]...And Hear Their Beyond Wicked/Beyond Better Version Of The Rolling Stones: Sympathy For The Devil... Entitled: Symphony For The Devil/Sympathy For The Devil...

A great video, Melinda; thanks! In my opinion, the eponymous Eagles OneStep is pretty darn close to MFSL's 'Hotel California' release; I can't wait to hear what they do with Joni Mitchell.

Michael Parkinson who was a famous chat show presenter in Britain is at the cover of Band on the run. amongst other celebrities, he died a few weeks ago, u may not have heard of him in states
Very jealous of your Donald Fagan promo, I believe this is another album that there is not a bad sounding version. I can't afford the 1 steps or uhqr's but I will splurge for a Tone Poet here & there. My favorite tone Poet is Coltrane - Blue Train
Blue Train was a perfect release. I'm so glad it was released as a Tone Poet. These releases are so good and affordable. I'm building a terrific jazz collection thanks to Blue Note. ♥️ Thank you and have a wonderful day!
Came across an enexpected,in my opinion on my stereo, the best sound I have heard Bob James. Obsession Warner Brothers On runout AL-SP. 1-25495 A DMM-SH2 STERLING SOUND. SP02 B 25095-SH3-DMM (triangle) 14033-X A lot of stuff on runout I can't explore. Thanks
I did not know about DMM. Saw a video of a vinyl printing plant in the Netherlands. Incredible place and cleared up for me many questions about DMM and One Step. You mention One Step often so you get it. I am learning. This album is not considered Audiophile, though the sound quality made me think it is worthy of a mention. Now I know DMM and why this recording is so great.
If you like Jazz aswell there was a Jazz influenced musician called Amy Winehouse. She was quite good.Songs like Back to Black and Rehab. But she died at only 27.
Awesome video! Many of those are my demo records; most days I think the MFSL UltraDisc of Blood Sweat and Tears is the greatest sounding thing I own. Unrelated note, hoping you're coming down to the St. Augustine record fair this weekend! :-)
I just recently made some stereo equipment upgrades and I couldn't wait to hear the Blood Sweat and Tears One Step. ♥️ It breaks my heart not to be at that record fair this year. We vacation in St Augustine nearly every year but won't be able to this year. That record fair last year was awesome. Please let me know what you find. We were chased out of St Augustine last year by a hurricane. Lol. Thank you and take care.
That's a pretty diverse mix of recordings you chose for this video. You will almost always have me in the palm of your hand if you talk about jazz. Art Blakey was known as a kind of "jazz university". Many promising young jazz musicians came up in his band. You mentioned some notable ones, and Freddie Hubbard was another one. I decided to purchase the Coltrane ALS UHQR; I just love the album as well, just a top notch release in every way. 😻😻😻😻😻 Many people say it beats the first pressing. I must agree that The Beach Boys mono Surfer Girl album pressed by AP/QRP and mastered from the original analogue tapes in all analogue sounds positively terrific. 😻You'd be hard pressed to find a better sounding version of that album. I'm intrigued by the Deutsche Grammophon classical music album you mentioned. I'd like to check that out. Is it an all analogue recording? 🤔 If you like violin based classical music, I recommend checking out the Deutsche Grammophon release of violinist Hilary Hahn's Retrospective album. It's a two lp set, and one of the records is recorded direct-to-disc (D2D). Hahn is widely hailed as the greatest violinist of her generation and has been compared to the truly great Jascha Heifetz by her fans. She also performs really good contemporary music as well. Still a young woman, I'd love ❤ to see her perform live. 🎻🎻🎻🎻🎻
Deutsche Grammophon is doing a special series called The Original Source Series. They have a huge hype sticker on them differentiating them from other releases. As best as I can tell these are coming from the analog tapes. The ones I have are dynamite. Hilary Hahn sounds like an incredible musician. I will have to look her up I am so glad I picked up the "A Love Supreme" UHQR. It is so beautiful. I will enjoy that for a lifetime. Thank you and have a great rest of the week. ♥️🤗
Sure, you're welcome and thanks for the further info on the Deutsche Grammophon The Original Source Series. You have a good week as well.👍💖🎸😎@@MelindaMurphy
Promotional copies were normally the first few hundred copies pressed, which means they're pressed on brand new stampers. That's because they were going out to radio and the press in advance of release dates, so they were usually grabbed "hot off the press" to beat the distribution of the records to retail. That's why they often sound great. Major labels of the day did not care about pressing quality, so they'd press 100 to 200 thousand before changing stampers. 16 year old kids did not have high quality record players, nor did they take care of records. I was one of them.
Great thoughts. It's cool to have promos and I agree they usually sound wonderful. I had a very cheap turntable and never gave real sound quality a thought.. lol. Thank you and take care.
And just for good measure...Jeff Beck>Emotion & Commotion...a real knockout album and some of his most thoughtful music. And a classic...Cat Stevens>Teaser and the Firecat...wonderful music from the early 70's...classic for the times...nicely recorded with great detail.
More for your ears...Pink Floyd>Meddle...Beach Boys>Endless Summer...Billy Joel>The Stranger. If you had a CD player I would tell you to get copies of Bluesiana Triangle and Bluesiana II...your mention of Art reminded me. Those two are remarkable recordings guaranteed to show off your system. I can give a solid recommendation for a single box player that can give you an entry point to music that never made it to vinyl and won't cost an arm and a leg.
Aja's coming out on 9/29 and according to Fremer's preview of a test copy, this version is supposed to knock it out of the park. The Mobile Fidelity from decades ago sounds really strange, and my early pressing ABC copy is nicely balanced with good detail, but has a little wear. I'm looking forward to Aja, and Gaucho (due 12/1). I'll probably sell the Thrill and Ecstacy UHQRs though, but I'll wait until they're out of print. If you see what the Nigthfly OneStep and Kevin Gray's cut of Aja for Cisco are fetching on Discogs, you'll understand why. 😁 (Should I keep a stockpile of Aja UHQRs as my retirement plan?? 🤣) Otherwise I have many excellent sounding records here--it would be very difficult to make a list!
Thanks for letting me know about Aja. That is a UHQR I have been sitting on the fence about. If I buy any Steely Dan UHQR'S, it will be Aja and Gaucho. Take care. ♥️🤗
@@MelindaMurphyI'm sure I'll post about Aja when it arrives here. 😁 I am also going to get Face Value from the Atlantic 75 series. It's Ramen for a month!! 🤣
Here's some of my best sounding vinyl: Three Blind Mice 45RPM box set. Kenny Burrell Midnight Blue. Oscar Peterson We Get Requests. Patrica Barber Imoex 45RPM one step Night Club. Bill Evans Riverside recordings box set. Hugh Masekela Hope 45RPM UHQR. Chick Corea Akoustic Band live. Joe Pass Caravan. I wish more of my favorite 60's and 70's rock artists were recorded and mixed with the type of care and quality that acoustic jazz artists of that time utilized😊
Great choices. I have a few of those records and I agree that they sound wonderful. That Oscar Peterson album is one of my favorites. Thank you and have a wonderful weekend.
Hey Melinda - great choices all around. Just as a help and not to be snooty - Deutsche is pronounced like Doy-shuh. German is tough if you’re not familiar. Keep on putting out the good stuff.
Lol. My apologies. There's a reason I didn't try to read the entire title. 😀 It's a great album and Deutsche Gramophone is creating a great series. Thank you and have a terrific day!
Luved this Video and wish Chet didn't sing ( his other album ) Kidding and Keep this Awesome content comming Thank You. If that Airplane is Mono I'll be right over lol
