No, the glib, rapid-fire, back-and-forth character conversations are the best part of the show. And the timing is always so good. It's like a Broadway play, but you can watch it at home on a comfortable sofa with a bowl of really good pork lo mein on your lap. 😉

From a writers standpoint I really love the stand-up she did in the gay bar in Paris during the season 2 premiere. Not only is it incredibly funny, but the pacing and rhythm- with Midge talking in English and gradually going faster and faster with the woman translating it into French just a couple beats behind her and just as fast- are SENSATIONAL!

Rachel Brosnahan is hilarious. You can say she is just going off a script, which she is, but that is about 50-60% of the performance. Her comedic timing is perfect, and all of these scenes feel so natural. Like all real, and good standup acts should be. That script can't be read by anyone and make it work as well as she does. The scenes are more than just a recited script. Not everyone realizes this.

Actually the actress confirmed that it's exactly word-for-word from the script. Of course Brosnahan has amazing comedic timing in her performance but there is no improvisation at all. The writers (Sherman-Palladino) wrote the dialogue with this rhythm in mind.

@@haniaaniq I realize the stand up acts in the show are pretty much word for word from a script. When i said 50-60% i was basing that off the comedy and the performance itself. Like we both seem to agree Brosnahan's performance is more than just memorizing a script. Some people seem to watch a sitcom and don't realize the comedic talent of the actors themselves. Both the comedic timing and the writing is important in comedy acts/sitcoms.

It blows my mind how Rachel Brosnahan absolutely nailed the delivery and comedic timing of stand up comedy. It's one of the hardest things to do and she does it flawlessly, like a natural. Her awards are very well deserved. I adore this show. It's hilarious and gorgeously produced (sets, costumes, music, camera work, performances, etc.). Already binged the new season and sad I have to wait another year for the next!

I absolutely love this show; its witty and extremely funny; the costume designs are flawless; and who doesn't love a period piece? It reeks with nostalgia. When season 3 aired, I binge watched every episode in one night. I can't wait for season 4 to debut; until then, I'll rewatch all 3 seasons. You created a masterpiece Amazon!

I accidentally started watching this show at the second season but it was just as good. So sure there were moments when they would reference something that had happened in the season 1, but I just assumed that they were going to have flashbacks later explaining it. Brilliant show. Brilliant actors. Brilliant writing. I stayed away from this show because of the title...had no idea what it was about, but had a sense it wasn’t my bag. So glad I gave it a shot. I did stand up for the first time this year because I was so inspired by this character. The human condition, if written and portrayed honestly, is timelessly relevant. Can’t help but think this show would be more popular and in the public conversation if it was a weekly event on HBO or Showtime.

God I love this show I remember when it was first being promoted and I soooo wanted to see it but I didn’t have amazon prime. A year or two later, I bought my own to watch it and Good Omens (I forgot about MMM). I can’t believe the next season is coming out around finals though 😭 I’m so not gonna be able to focus lol

I could rehearse doing a stand-up comedy routine for a year and not get close to any of these scenes. There was also some scenes in the 1st season where she bombed and they also looked very authentic.

If I could meet Amy Sherman-Palladino, I would thank her profusely. She gave us Mrs. Maisel, she gave us Gilmore Girls, she gave us the painfully short-lived but still worth watching phenomenon that was Bunheads, she's a rockstar. ...Then I would ask her what the hell she was smoking when she wrote the revival.

My problem with this is that the writers write snappy dialogue, but they don't use period voice. She talks like a comic from 2019 -- This is supposed to be a glitzy period piece -- where's that VOICE? Also, as far as dropping an F bomb in a stand up, she would have gotten arrested and barred -- Ever hear of Belle Barth or Lennie Bruce? Getting bailed outta jail by Lennie Bruce for flashing her breasts was a gimmicky shortcut to explain away all of this, but the truth is that female comics back then didn't just emerge as stars. They struggled and were held to standards that almost made them become extinct. Do yourself a favor and Google the name Belle Barth -- now THAT is where this should have gone. The reason this period-voice-anachronism happens is that the writing talent is LIMITED by their own eras. This wouldn't be so obvious were it not for the fact that the cinematographer and set designers do a superb job bring us to a place in time. Basically, Hollywood can't stop being shticky about shtick. Imagine Downton Abbey ( a period piece) and think about Lady Grantham saying, "Who the f*ck do you think you're talking to." Yeah, it would get a laugh, but it wouldn't make sense. Also, Judaism seems to be just part of the set design. In my head, I think this may have been written really well but changes were forced on the creators/writers, by Hollywood producers with no discernible talents.

Love the show, but as someone who's done standup, it kinda annoys me that she gets up for the first time and immediately starts slaying every single set. Just once I want to see her try a new joke that completely bombs.
