Episode Notes:
1. Captured on the Mega SG and Mega SD.
2. This video was originally part of the first video. I had written the episode originally to have more than one runner up per section. That made for a video that was nearly an hour long, however. I then decided to do a two parter so the running time wasn't so long.
3. I still consider the Sega CD a great machine. It's market performance is another matter, but as far as software, I loved my time with it.

Monkey Island was special for me. I had divorced parents, visited my mother and had a friend with a computer and this game. Lived with my father and neither myself nor any of my friends had a computer. Renting this on the Sega CD was the only way to get those friends to experience the game. Not the best version, but it was the best option for a time, and we all had a lot of laughs playing through it together.

The way sega themselves didn’t develop any scalers for the machine is almost criminal, those core games look 32 bit-ish,a cold reminder of the Big what could’ve be if Sega would’ve put a little effort on the scaler side of the tech
@maxxdahl6062

Others weren't doing much better. At least sega did SOMETHING with it. Games like NBA jam should have used it but it was much easier (lazier) to just copy over the genesis version and put on cd music.

Yeah, and we wouldn't have ended up with the Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Pluto debacle that killed any confidence in SEGA.
@parappatherapper4141
@parappatherapper4141 Год назад
Yep, it bugs me a lot. Their only effort were the BIOS logo doing crazy stuff bragging about how capable the console was, and Sonic CD's special stage, which is certainly not a very good use of scaling imo either. Truly a shame to realize they didn't even try.
@MaxAbramson3
@MaxAbramson3 Год назад
@@parappatherapper4141 Yeah, even non-SEGA fans were talking about that. If the company wasn't willing to push that $300 addon to its limits, what were we supposed to expect from the $180 32X, $400 Saturn, and who knows what after those were discontinued? And not knowing whether Jupiter, Saturn, or Neptune would even have a CD player, play Genesis or Sega CD games, or even exist. Gamers in 1995 were openly talking about whether or not the Saturn/Jupiter would even do 3D or be backward compatible. The whole affair was nuts.

Just wanted to say how much I really love your channel. I grew up in a Nintendo household but never had anything against Sega, my parents simply didn't have much money so I could only play Sega consoles at my friends' houses. And of course, the few people I knew who had a Sega CD could never play it because it was always broken, LoL. But I still always had a fascination with Sega and their products despite never owning any of them until later in life, and your channel has been supremely helpful and informative. I love learning all the trivia I never know, discovering the "hidden gems" on each console, and it's been a real boon to my collecting as well. There's a lot of games I never would have bought without your "guidance". So thanks for everything you do in providing us with one of the best gaming channels on RU-vid, it really means a lot.

I was around 12 or 13 when the Sega CD came out. All I remember seeing were ads for full-motion video games like “Night Trap” and those making the music video ones. (To a kid in the 90’s those still seemed cool and futuristic though). I had an SNES and then N64 throughout the decade. But after watching your videos and going back and finally playing some amazing Genesis, Sega CD, and Saturn games, I’ve come to realize I would have been MUCH happier with a Genesis back then!!! So many genres and game types I love now that had no representation on Nintendo consoles were on Genesis and Sega CD. The games on those systems, were more mature and adult than on Nintendo. Not in terms of gore or sex, but in adult themes and stories. I would have lost my mind seeing the Anime cutscenes in stuff like “Vay” or “Lunar”. Or a game like “Battlecorps” which looked great for a 16-bit 1st-person mech game!

Likewise BC Racers is best version on Sega CD, it’s generally better than the 32x version. Mega Race is interesting but the speed is always the SAME SPEED since it’s playing FMV, so the environment speed can never change faster or slower, at least that was my impression a few yrs ago… so it seemed a bizarre racing experience…. Dune is wonderful and I used to practice Spanish with its multiple languages. :) Ecco: Tides is great but my favorite is the first Ecco CD, but also Ecco PC is a fantastic must play, it’s free and it’s 32-bit. Dune, Monkey Island and Flashback were staples for me growing up. But Vay was something else for me. @@Gatorade69 I only found it because someone swapped out the local Blockbuster Video's copy of Lunar for it, and the store clerks didn't notice the difference. It's decent enough, but really an example of the American gaming market mentality of "can't let kids beat it in a weekend." I easily beat Lunar in the weekend when I first rented it, but Vay is its own savage beast. Every plot point you come across must be preceded by roughly two hours of level grinding, and that's just to barely scrape by the insane number of boss fights the game throws at you. I had Rage in a Cage for Sega CD as a kid but we could never play it as I never had a Sega CD.. or a Genesis. The 90's were a different time and I think it was purchased by my cousins who thought it would've worked on a PC. They liked pro wrestling back when I didn't. Seeing the gameplay, it looks pretty fun. I was wondering why Yokozuna was so much smaller in it and audibly laughed seeing Jake Roberts effortlessly suplex him and throw him out of the ring. I like the arcade game more for its over-the top specials and the likes, but this was pretty cool to finally see gameplay of.

Rage in the cage uses the royal rumble engine, if you have played that game. It has 20 wrestlers which was big at the time. The 2 things that hold the game back is that there is no tag team mode and no royal rumble mode. The funny thing is that there are 3 tag teams in the game but no tag team mode. (Money Inc, Dibiase and IRS, The Headshrinkers Fatu (Rikishi) and Samu, The Nasty Boys Brian Knobbs and Jerry Sags)

@@marccaselle8108 Going to guess the tag modes and royal rumble were due to both RAM and loading, with a disc loading royal rumble wouldn't really be feasible.

In the FMV category, Tomcat Alley is a must play. It's Top Gun for Sega CD.

Some of these titles also look really good. Thanks for sharing this other list. We just had a vintage gaming shop open up in our city so if they have a Genesis and Sega CD I might look into picking it up. What would you consider a fair price for those systems? Since its a shop I can't expect the price to be real cheap but I just don't know honest market value for this.

I guess a difference between Sega CD and 32x and other add-ons or related consoles was that they were brought out over in the USA where the scrutiny is greater. It's also a pattern or sequence of Sega developing and releasing consoles and/or add-ons and then abandoning them, which can affect trust with consumers for future releases. I know that I wasn't about to buy a Dreamcast following the manner in which Sega didn't fully support the dedicated consumers of the Saturn and wouldn't bring over all of these great looking games (or doing so very late) that I was staring at in issues of Gamefan, EGM, and Intelligent Gamer at the time. I just stuck it out with the N64 and was perfectly content with it, because I knew that Nintendo would support it up until their next console. Other companies suffered the same criticism though; plenty of flak gets thrown at Nintendo for the Virtual Boy, and it was curtains for NEC in the west after the Turbo-Duo flopped. Had they marketed and released the Supergrafx over here with it's high price-point and whopping five game library it would have garnered some backlash for sure. Same with the Jaguar CD; releasing add-ons like that and then not supporting them is very bad business and that was all she wrote for Atari in the hardware market. With Sega it was more the 1-2-3 punch of Sega CD, 32x, and Saturn not being fully realized. Great games and franchises for Sega systems but you also have to look at the competition and how it all stacks up for the asking price.

Nice series on your Sega CD picks. I always made a distinction between scrolling shooters and stuff like Thunderstrike, which I should play again sometime as I did have that one back in the day. That said, my favorite shooter is Android Assault. It really is quite good, in my opinion. It also feels more cohesive than Robo Aleste, which is not bad, but has some odd quirks. As I recall, WWF Rage in the Cage didn't have tag team matches, despite having a couple of actual teams. That was the biggest disappointment to me in that game. Something like Mickey Mania I thought might have added too many voices. But going back to positives, I really enjoyed Devastator. It's a little basic looking as a first impression, and the game is straightforward, but it was fun and well made.

The Sega CD has a special place in my heart. I don't know why I'm nostalgic so much for that system over all the others I've played and owned. Maybe it's partly because they're so hard to play nowadays or maybe it was just the right point in my life. There just seemed to be such a wide variety of games. It was the one system I never sold any of my games from. It's always nice to see it get some positive attention. There were at least two games in this video that I haven't played that I now want to.

I think add-ons weren't popular simply because the consumer saw 2 seperate purchase's even if they had the main console already, just to complicated for the masses.

No. It's sharper because of the resolution increase, but any upscaler will give you the same benefit on a modern display.

My personal favorite FMV title is Double Switch. What a wacky cast of characters. I had to write down a long list of required actions in order to make progress.

I absolutely loved the Sega CD, I knew we were going into a new gaming age with CD based games. It’s a damn shame that the Sega CD didn’t get the chance it should have. Along with enhanced ports and some exclusives the system could have been treated so much better. But what I think helped it’s decline were a lot of the negative press from the dozens of FMV games. Still a quality system in my eyes and I loved the model 1 version the best. Thanks for the awesome videos!

Different strokes and all that, but I've always felt the pre-rendered cutscenes for Flashback look much worse than the original rotoscoped versions. They're completely at odds with the aesthetic of the gameplay and the attempts at rendering human faces are as bad as you'd expect from CGI of the era (thankfully most of the cutscenes are just of hands and objects and landscapes). The Sega CD version compounds all that with the heavy dithering typical of the platform. The music is pretty good on its own but a lot of it is way too bombastic for the type of game it is. The Genesis version had the rotoscoped cutscenes and struck a good balance by only using music when the action got heavy, but I just wish it had the voice acting from the Sega CD port.
