Every addition the show made to Tywin's character that wasn't in the books was absolutely perfect. From the scene that introduces him, where he's skinning a stag. To the presence of Shae in his bed, which gave his character such a stunning and rich last-minute layer, solidifying not only the hypocracy of his worldview, but his similarities to Tyrion as well.
I think he is better in the show than in the books. Some of his cruelty like Tysha and some of Mountain did is removed so he is more complex and easier to see his point of view even if he is a villain. He is more an example of a ruthless lord in the books series than anything else:
15:37- I think Tywin hates Tyrion not only because he's a dwarf, which contrasts with the beautiful elite image of the Lannisters, that he killed his wife and Tyrion's own personal flaws such as alcoholism and lechery- is that Tyrion reminds Tywin of Tytos, the drunk lecherous, and carefree father that almost ruined the family. Seeing Tyrion succeed in playing the game of thrones spite of having his grandfather's flaws, really gets under Tywin's skin. He's trying to deny that at some level, this next generation of "Tytos" might be right and that he could be wrong- which pisses him off greatly.
Oooh I'm gonna love this project!! Also, I remember how much I miss Tywin Lannister. Tywin was one of the most realistic, non-cartoonish villains I've seen. He was, above everything else, a politician, always putting his family's interest first! And it is exactly this obsession with family that ruined him in the end. If he had managed to put aside his pathological hate for Tyrion and not letting it affect his decision making, he would probably be one of the stongest players in the game till the end.
And everything he built crumbled after he died. He was too ruthless and his children learned the wrong lessons. His obsession with his family legacy led to its fall, an almost Shakespearean sense of tragedy for a villain.
Tywin’s ultimate failure is that he never really puts his actual family first, much less than he puts the glorious title of the Lannister House first. Tyrion is his family and he absolutely hates him. Cersei is his family and he objectifies and ignores her. Jaime is his family and he barely knows him. This is the same problem with so many lords in Westeros who only view their children as political tools. The only leaders of great houses who truly care about its family members are Ned Stark and Olenna Tyrell. They (mostly) accept their children for who they are and truly want them to be safe, happy and successful, in addition to contributing to the prosperity of the house.
The show skipped the vast majority of books 4 and 5, and most of what it DID adapt left out all the nuance, so season 4 episode 10 was arguably the last episode adapted from the novels. It was such a good adaptation too, they were legitimately brilliant at it...
The children is my favorite episode of the entire show, it has everything that was great about it. Some episodes only have amazing action, some only have great character moments, some focus mostly on the politics/family drama, some start out slow then build to a major death. The children has all of this: Stannis's charge, the hound Brienne fight, tyrion and arya leaving westeros, daenerys locking away her dragons, jon negotiating with Mance, Tywin and Cersei arguing, Jaime going against his family to free Tyrion, Bran finally reaching the Three Eyed Raven, and the deaths of Tywin, Shae, Jojen
it was the greatest set up for stories and character arcs who would have been amazing if it wasn't for the direction the show took in terms of writting since season 5..
@@CrimsonCharan I really don't like the writing in Season 8. I dislike it even more than the seasons we've got since they ran out of book material to adapt. So if you want essays outlining the journey of surviving characters, the end parts of it won't make much sense because the writing is not in-character either.
You guys seriously are one of the best analysis channels on this platform. You always find new, interesting and well thought out perspectives and you make me think about the media I watch more deeply. Thank you for all your hard work! You are truly marvelous!
I love season 8. The arcs ended exactly the way they were always set up. Jaime was never going to be the Hollywood white Knight... villain turned absolutely good. Dany’s arc has been set up since season one and we always knew the NK was a red herring meant to demonstrate how humans go right back to killing each other and acting horribly after averting death.
@@melanatedqueen6662 I just can't take people like you seriously. If season 8 had been 10 hours of Sam taking a giant steaming turd, you would be telling us it was obviously where the series was going all along.
@@melanatedqueen6662 who "always knew" ? Seriously except you and like the two people who liked your comment how did "we always knew" that the Night King was supposed to be that meaningless ? There ain't no "metaphore" in the NK, it's just that D&D didn't know what the fuck they should do with the white walkers.
The arcs ended similarly to what was set up, but D and D kinda forgot to properly develop the characters in the later Seasons to get to that point. For example, I want the Mad Queen stuff with Daenerys to happen in the books. Just before Season 8 came out, I was thinking about how it was a shame they hadn't built it up (naturally, I never thought they'd be stupid enough to throw it in there). I was so disappointed when they had Daenerys burn a whole city, when just days earlier, she was making an effort to be a good Queen with morals. It's just illogical.
I can't believe D&S were once thought to be the best writers of the show. It's hard to realize this episode was written by the same people who wrote the last few episodes.
They're excellent at adaptation, shit at creation. On one hand I'm constantly irritated by the choices they make once they have full control over the story, but on the other, it's not their fault GRRM never finished the books.
Yes!!!!!! Ladies I have been saying for years the hound was essentially a father figure for Arya. Aryas arc in season 8 is that she has softened to people around her. She can finally see the humanity in “Sandor” as she can call him by his real name. She now truly understands his plight and his fear and relates to it, because it’s essentially no different from her own. So many wonderful observations about Tyrion, Cersei and Shae. Oh and Tywin, thanks for showing his simple flaws in parenting that was due to his own painful upbringing (embarrassing)Thank you 🙏🏿
Season 2, and then 4 for me. Season 4 had the purpole wedding early on, Prince Oberyn, Tryion's trial, She's betrayel, the fight between Oberyn and the mountain, Jorah's banishment, the hound, and Tywin's murder. And that is not even including Jon and the North.
First 4 seasons are hard to split, that's for sure! One day we'll get an adaptation that uses all the books and we'll get the whole series at that quality.
This was also the episode which marked the shift from complex storytelling to shock-and-awe tactics and the GRRM's resignation from script writing. Can't believe its the same D&D.
just checked out all the others in the Best of Thrones playlist and have to say this channel is the best in terms of voice over, presentation and clear analysis. Thanks for your excellent work
Why I love ScreenPrism (or The Take)... While other channels are busy trying to explain why season 8 isn't "all that bad", they create videos to remind us of why we fell in love with the series in the first place 👍
OMG this Best of Thrones playlist is truly excellent, I hope there are more! These vids are so well thought out, clearly a labor of love. I've enjoyed these vids more than any other game of thrones videos. Kudos to The Take, this collaboration was the best idea ever.
IMO, Season 4 is the best season: Prince Oberyn, the Purple Wedding, the trial of Tyrion, the adventures of Arya & the Hound, Oberyn vs the Mountain, Brienne vs the Hound, the patricide of Tywin by Tyrion - it's all fantastic!
Tywin never stole Shae. Shae was hired by Tywin to spy on Tyrion but she fell in love so she insisted that they sail to pentos to escape from Tywin. When Tyrion pushed her away, her heart broke and she betrayed him completely.

There’s a Native American saying: “We do not get our land from our grandfathers but borrow them from our children.” Basically, the aftermath of our lives is the beginning of the next lives.
Of course my favorite channel would pick my favorite episode of my favorite show to do an analysis over. Great video y’all, I can’t wait to see what you do next :)
People who criticize David Benioff, D. B. Weiss think that adapting a book to a show or running without it is just a cake walk. Thanks to The take for accurate analysis on the episode, they deserve more praise and not criticism for expected theories not coming true and groundbreaking realism in a fantasy fiction story. Yes, there might be few flaws and which show hasn't? I thank both of them for giving such a wonderful show for us and looking forward to see more great works from David Benioff, D. B. Weiss.
Yes we have them to thank for adapting the books and bringing the story to television. That's exactly right. We also have them to thank for destroying the show. HBO wanted more seasons and more episodes per season. D&D wanted to stick to their vision. Meaning let's knock this thing out quick n get going on Star Wars! (D&D high five) The force is coming...Woot woot!
Thank you GoT for giving me such great entertainment since 2014 (yeah I arrived late to this party 😜) I was disappointed by S08E05 and may also be disappointed by the last one but this tv show will remain to me one one the greatest ❤️ and thank you the Take for your awesome videos!
I know a lot of people are dissapointed about where the show is now but this video essay series is a great idea celebrating some of the best television ever made, whe should not forget what game of thrones first seasons IS, yes is not were because those season are all still there and we can love them even if we don't like the conclusion of the series. Don't let the ending destroy some of the best episodes of television because no one except yourself can take those episodes away from you
Great video! It pairs so well with your Mad Men episode on Sally. Now I think about it I would imagine Betty would play well in Westeros, she is a lot like Tywin. And Sally would do well there too. When Tyrion killed his dad I was pretty shocked. Tywin is so good at manipulating people to his will. And Cersei laying down the truth smackdown was what Tywin deserved.
If Dany is becoming the bad guy of the series, it's funny that she isn't really of this present generation, but is of the previous generation; she's Jon's aunt, not cousin.
I am going to pretend that after this episode the show was cancelled. All the elements for an open ending are here, from Arya sailng to Essos, from Tyrion killing his father, to everything else. Like Deadwood, cancelled for some stupid reason. Yes we would not have great moments like Hardhome, or Battle of Bastards, but we would not have disastrous moments like season 7-8. Renember it for what it was, not what it became.
So now that we've seen where the surviving children - Jon, Sansa, Arya, Bran, Gendry, Sam, and Tyrion - stand for their new world, it's a mixed feeling over what it reflects for their parents and the future.
