Oil paint is the easiest medium for artists who want to learn how to paint! I whole-heartedly believe this and want to share why in this vlog. I'm painting a still life of my studio plants in oil paints and visiting a local plant shop this week! Oil paints are a little intimidating at first due to all the mediums, but you can keep your process simple if you're just starting out. They're easy to blend and you can paint more confidently knowing it's easy to cover mistakes with a slow drying time. Hopefully this vlog will convince you to try oil paints out if you've been considering it!

Thank you!!! We've been saying for years that oil paint is not scary or complicated! It can go as slow as you need it to, it's forgiving and allows corrections, and a little goes a very long way! The tiny amount of solvent sometimes used with oils isn't even, strictly speaking, necessary- it's possible to use solvent-free mediums and even water-miscible oil paints!
@RumoHasIt
@RumoHasIt Год назад
For anyone interested in trying oil paints, Geneva Fine Oil Paints use clove essential oil as their medium and therefore are safe to use indoors without ventilation because you dont use/need mineral spirits. I dont even own a can of solvent, it was such a game changer! There's also the Holebine Duo water-soluble paints if you want a soap and water option ❤❤

It's so interesting to hear that you find watercolour difficult, whilst watercolour is my favourite medium and oils seem incomprehensible to me! Crazy how everyone is so different and we're all good at something, we just need to find it ❤

I started with watercolor and then I also meddled with oil. I agree with you that oils are a good/better medium for beginners and I wish I had started with them before I messed around with watercolors. That could’ve saved me from a lot of frustration.😅 Anyways, I’m planning to get back to oil painting again.

I agree. I wish I had started with oils way sooner than I did. I messed around with acrylics which, in my opinion is probably one of the worst mediums to begin painting with lol... Besides specific brands that are meant to mimic oils----acrylics just dry too fast and you'll be frustrated and give up. Oils are way more forgiving and you can kind of push and pull the paint if your shapes aren't quite right. And if it's really bad you can literally just scrape the paint off and start over! Do yourself a favor and get a small set of water mixable oils. All you need is water, a pad of canvas paper and some decent brushes. Best part, as you get better you can use the regular "fancier" oil painting mediums/solvents/etc and use them with the water mixable oils if you want! 😁
@AshleighKing

Great advice about the water mixable oils!! I haven't tried them personally, but I think they'd be great for beginners too.

This was so good Ashleigh thank you.. I’m a charcoal and graphite artist but I also have an unmeasurable love for colors and oil painting.. I’m trying to paint but it is daunting and I’m taking it maybe too slow.. I guess I have much respect for the medium to the point of too much seriousness.. I always think of it as classic art medium or even realism/ hyperrealism art witch obviously makes it look scary to dive into. As I consider my liking to be categorized under realism, however, every time I hear an artist talk about looseness or expressiveness in art, I feel joy, maybe it makes me think it’s ok to play with my colors and brushes. That’s all. Thank you for sharing your journey, It’s joyous. Much love🎉

For me learning watercolor first made oil very difficult for me. I struggle with how the layers underneath move around with layers on top. It has been years since I oil painted and I need to try again, but the other issue I have had is the drag. The thickness of the paint and the drag was so difficult. Maybe it is because I was using water miscible oils (solvents make me ill) and the water based oils were pretty new at the time. I tried Winsor and Newton which were awful and dry. Then it was Holbein. Still dry, I ended up with Lukas from Jerry’s and it was buttery soft and I. Could finally move the paint around. But there was no one teaching how to use oil paint at the time, online. Idk. Maybe I need to try it again. I don’t know how long the paint lasts, but I will dig them out and give ‘em a shot again. I’ve always been a. Watercolor and gouache girl at heart.

I love ❤oil paint 🎨 too however, I don’t feel like it’s beginner friendly because for the most part when you first start painting you feel so confused at least I did. you don’t even know where to start and all the solvents can be super confusing and if you don’t use it right it can be messy and toxic so I would suggest water mixable oils and once you get the hang of everything, then you graduate to the other one. Great video as usual.

Do water mixable oil paints work the same as normal ones? Also, which one would you prefer? And can you suggest any subject matter to use while starting with oils? Im turning 14 this year, and upon hearing you started oil paints on the same age...i am so excited!! Looking forward to your response!

I know oils and acrylic paints are very different I remember learning a bit about it in art class in high school but that was years ago. I remember with acrylics you can use water for your brushes but oil you have to use a different/special type of liquid. What was that? I don't remember. Also when I use acrylic I don't prepare my canvas but from watching your videos it looks like you put something on the canvas before you use the oils, what is that? I want to practice using oil paints but don't know where to start. What would you recommend buying? And what is needed for painting with oils? For instance, can I use the same brushes I use for my acrylics or would that damage it?

I found it surprising you think oils are easier than watercolors. I primarily paint in watercolors. I tried oils too but the slow dry time drives me crazy plus I can't seem to paint over the previous layers till the 1st layer is fully dry otherwise it will catch and muddy up the color I want to put over the time with the previous color. Yet youtubers make it look so simple and easy, what tips do you have for that?
@AshleighKing
@AshleighKing Год назад
I would try adding a medium like Liquin or solvent free gel to your paint mixtures. When I do this, I'm able to paint over other paint layers by the next day. This way I can work on laying an initial paint layer over the entire canvas my first session and have it all dry by the next morning. Hope this helps!

A solvent like Gamsol/ odorless mineral spirits to clean the brushes and thin paint would also help! Otherwise you're good to go. You can learn to add mediums like linseed oil or liquin later on. Best of luck!!
