Japan has a lot of Pokemon Card stores - so many that it can be overwhelming it times. Which card should I buy? What's the best price? So many questions run through my mind - and with so many different Special Arts, UItra Rares and Full Art Trainer Cards in front of you, working out what to buy is tough.
I spent a lot of time in Japan visiting Pokemon Card stores to see what it was really like - so here's a rundown of one of the better shops in Kyoto!

I'd agree with how you felt about shopping for particular cards. I went with a shopping list of Neo cards I wanted but it caused more stress than I wanted on a holiday. It was a lot more fun just picking up random cards I saw and liked.

Hi, I've been watching a couple of videos recently and I wanted to ask if you've ever seen any loose Best of XY packs or boxes in any of the card stores? I'm doing a pack collection run and planning on heading to Japan during the summer so I thought I'd ask. Thanks for putting out amazing content

In Tokyo I've seen some in Card Secret (they had a whole box of it) and Magi for lose packs.

Seeing videos like this make me wish I had better card shops near me 😂 stuck with a BOOK OFF and a Tsutaya. Also, Edion is one of the big three (out of Tokyo) chain electronic stores, others are Best Denki and Yamada. Bic Camera/Yodobashi etc tend to stay in main centres. As far as I know only Edion has entered trading cards. With the market as down as it is, they may even stop at some point if they can’t turn a profit.

For the stores that started 2 years ago must be really tough at the moment. Now would actually be the best time to start a card business, with the market down selling prices are low but buying prices are also low. You'd probably have a better chance of profit over the long run starting now than starting when the market was going through the roof like 2 years back.

@@PokeNickinJapan agreed, best time to begin, but Edion etc started pre Worlds, when things were a lot more expensive. They’re most likely running into the red, but for a big business in Japan, that’s a dream as it’s a massive tax write off 😂 for small businesses though, fighting for the market share is one thing, but a lot of players/sellers are using Mercari/Yahoo to make the most they possibly can, a card shop will only give a fraction (which is necessary for them to survive) Also factoring in the Japanese card RU-vidrs making their own card shops which funnel in their audiences, and card shows (like card party) and it makes it harder to get your foot in the door. Makes international scalping the go to 🧐

@@brensei_15 It's a shame for the smaller card shops as you mention it. All the shop owners I discuss with are telling the same story, these are tough times. Many products they purchased months ago from customers are now being sold for less than what they paid for... I agree that for Japanese resident Mercari is usually the way to go (even though not always the cheapest), but for tourists local card shops are still more convenient. That's why if I were to start a physical card business now (which I won't, for the reasons you mentioned I don't want to pull people away from shops I've been trying my best to advertise xD), I would target foreign travelers with products I know they are looking for.

@@PokeNickinJapan the overheads though must be insane, having a physical store comes with a lot of risks too, plus rent/utilities. Plus location would make it or break it. Too far out but low prices/decent stock will define which audience will come your way.

As someone that lives here and been here for 8 years. I always check on these vids to see what the prices are. Its normally vids titled BEST shop in japan and its always terribly high. I see tons of this stuff too is very high. lots of this stuff is 10x+ what I normally pay. some random stuff. I saw most all of those CP full arts in the 5k range and I get them under 1k yen. I bought tons of them at 30 yen each like the team aqua kyogre etc. Pikachu Lv.X 28k and again Get that under 1k yen, You get the idea I don't need to run down the whole showcase lol Its nice to show people some shops here in Japan but people coming here should check out multiple shops and always stay away from tourist areas / famous and well known shops . you will find better stuff that way for sure

I know what your saying , about the going into stores and then thinking "why am i not just doing this online". Im doing the same thing , I bike to random card shops (1-3 hours away) and i go hunting for cards. For me it feels more like playing pokemon in my adult version of it. But it also doesnt feel very good spend my collection dollers overpaying at a card shop, so I get a little stuck in my pursuit sometimes. I want to collect these cards in a challenging but rewarding way . I could just empty my bank account in a couple hours on ebay , but its not really what its about for me .

If I compare most of the prices there with the market prices in Germany where I live - the store is extremely cheap.

what does the number in front of the yen indicate? # of cards?
@brensei_15
@brensei_15 4 месяца назад
It’d be point of sale, the ones with numbers had modified prices, so it’s most likely an indicator for staff to price it under the correct code.
