My name is Jake and I repair and overhaul instant cameras! Got a Polaroid 600 you want i-Type modded? Get in contact with me! Links below!
In todays episode, I modify a Polaroid 660AF - belonging to Stephen from @FIGITALREVOLUTION - to take AAA batteries, allowing the camera to use cheaper i-Type film!
In addition to this, I discuss several key features unique to the autofocus box cameras , and show how to adjust and calibrate the flash
Like what I do? Find this video helpful or entertaining?

Getting artifacts in the video? For best quality, manually select 1080p quality, as depending on your bandwidth, RU-vid may default to 720p - and RU-vid's 720p compression looks like garbage

This is one of a few videos I've done on AAA modding cameras to take i-Type film.
More details - such as how to wire up the battery holder itself can be found in my previous videos:

CORRECTION: A deeper review of the manual reveals the 660AF apparently has FOUR lenses in its middle element. As I was recording the video I was having doubts as to whether or not I was remembering this info correctly or not. I believe I was confusing it with the Spectra and its 'quintic' lens system which works in a similar way (having a curved centre element that varies focus as it travels up and down) Quin - meaning 5 - was why I thought there were 5 lens elements. The correct answer is 4

Just bought a Sun660 AF today and boy was it a bit nasty. So glad you made this video just in time for me to do an overhaul. I didn't do the battery mod but followed your instructions to take the camera apart. Thank you for all the tips and advice. I was able to deep clean the camera, bringing some life back into it.

I'm so glad you've previously showed how to take apart the flash hood. Thanks to you, I was able to harvest flashes from 3 broken cameras to repair 3 other cameras with bad flashes. MAJOR THANKS TO YOU SHARING YOUR WEALTH OF KNOWLEDGE!!!!!!! I seriously can't thank you enough for how much you've taught me with these videos! And now you just taught me why one of my 660s is so dark indoors! I thought my light sensor was going bad, but outdoor photos were just fine. THANK YOU MAN!!

I put the Li-Po inside the flash enclosure (there is a space). The charger and boost converter fit in front over the original PCB 😃

I just I-type converted a 670AF. Definitely worth the 45 minutes it took lol

You'd expect the button on the flash unit to be for flash cancellation and the secondary trigger for disabling autofocus. But it's the other way around.

According to the seller, it's the later model, and has been sitting in a closet since 1987! I can't wait for it to arrive!

Done this mod to my 660AF and some 600 box cams. While I didn't opt for a battery holder with a switch I use quick connectors so I still can use 600 film. I agree it's best to completely remove the guts from the case. All the 600s I've opened had dirty mirrors.

Fantastic video, love that you're letting all this info into the world! I have a 660 myself which makes underexposed flash photos, so the part about the variable resistor might be pretty useful for me. Do you happen know how sensitive it is to calibrate? Say my camera is underexposing by exactly one stop, how much would I need to turn it? Half a rotation, full rotation? Thanks again, you're a legend for all of these tutorials!

imagining the trimpot is like a protractor... try for maybe 10 degree slices of a turn at a time Test, turn, test, turn until it looks good

I see, I'll do my best to note how much is needed for a difference like mine. Thank you! Edit: 1 stop comes out to roughly 30° on my copy. And you were right, turning clockwise makes it brighter.

Hi, Thanks Jake for this very interesting video especially the part on flash power setup. Do you know if these cameras do still have an aperture enslaves with the distance when using flash? If so, is there a way to adjust this setting ? Best regards Patrice
@theinstantcameraguy
@theinstantcameraguy Месяц назад
I believe it uses a combination of ambient light and distance for a 'fill flash' effect So aperture depend on distance and how bright it is in terms of ambient light No way to control the aperture without drastically affecting exposure to a negative extent afaik

Thank you, this is just what I needed to mod my Sun660! Have you ever i-type modded a Polaroid Impulse camera? I recently received an Impulse AF I would love to mod, but there aren't really any guides I can find about these cameras.
@theinstantcameraguy
@theinstantcameraguy Месяц назад
That's because they are absolutely horrible cameras to work on Nearly impossible to take apart without breaking a clip

Was the Sonar Autofocus 5000 the last model that featured "real" autofocus? (with a motor moving the lens)

9:58 Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe this camera (and the Impulse AF) can only focus to 3 feet. I think the early 90s and late 90s OneStep Autofocus cameras do focus to 2 feet however
@theinstantcameraguy
@theinstantcameraguy Месяц назад
I believe I am correct. The Pronto SX-70 series had a minimum distance of 3 feet though I've always found the 660AF totally capable at 2 feet, and the manual states it has a range of 2-14 feet when using flash. Additionally it states in the manual that your subject should be at least 2 feet away. I did make a mistake though... The middle lens cell has FOUR lenses, not 5 I think I got confused with the Spectra series

Hey Jake! For compactness sake, do you think 2 3v coin cell batteries would be a good power option?
@theinstantcameraguy
@theinstantcameraguy Месяц назад
I think they would drain very very quickly They don't hold much charge as far as I know, and are kinda expensive
@AnAvgJoe
@AnAvgJoe Месяц назад
No they will not :( I tried this and it didn't work. So I thought, "maybe I'll wire up 4 coin batteries to up the mAh". Sadly that did not work either. Coin batteries output too little amperage in order for the camera to eject. I did not think about power output, only voltage at the time. Wasted $20 for the batteries and cases.
@kostaschicagobulls
@kostaschicagobulls Месяц назад
IKEAs cheap lithium ones are 1300 mAh, which is around what a standard AAA has I think
@AnAvgJoe
@AnAvgJoe Месяц назад
@kostaschicagobulls mAh is basically battery capacity. Not power output. Just because the mAh are similar or a large number, doesn't mean it outputs the same as a AAA. To be fair, I didn't wire up my battery holders directly to the camera. Instead, I took an empty 600 film cartridge, removed everything, and made my own terminals in the cartridge so I didn't have to take apart the camera. This was just a test for proof of concept if I could get it to work. I tested battery voltage to make sure it was 6V, and made sure I had pos and neg in the right spots. The camera would attempt to eject, but stop. It also attempted to charged up the flash by blinking the led, but would not fully charge the flash, and wouldn't fire. It wasn't until someone told me that coin batteries have a very low power output because they're mostly used in small devices, such as remotes. They're designed for devices that don't draw too much power. Now there may be higher output coin batteries, but after this, I didn't bother with that experiment any further. Definitely let me know if you figure out it works, and I just did something wrong!

I'll do some experiments and let you know my friend! Thank you for sharing your experience with those batteries!
