His last statement, "If I had the schematics, I could keep thousands of iPhones out of landfills and save customers thousands of dollars on phones" is exactly why Apple and other companies don't want us to repair our devices ourselves.
They don't even want their "authorized repair dealers" to be able to fix them. Many will diagnose the problem and then say it can't be repaired without huge expenses vs purchasing a new unit. This happens for even the most basic and simple repairs beyond a new screen being replaced and a huge expense as well.

I can't believe the sheep just keep throwing their hard earned cash at apple and for no other reason than vanity. There is NOTHING an iPhone can do that any other smart phone can't, except other smart phones can swap files with each other and use each others chargers, yet somehow these apple fans keep insisting their shit is better. Please explain HOW?
Pretty sure more people own Android phones, so who are the sheep these days? I tried Android once and didn’t last a year, the apps were subpar and the Google Pixel 2 XL was glitchy on a daily basis. Apple just works seamlessly and intuitively, things that needed an unnecessary number of steps on Android, just take a minimal amount in iOS. Yes there were features I loved on the Pixel but ultimately convenience won me back not to mention the premium design that Apple leads.
And yet our poloticians are excepting the claim they must be apple certified to ignore the monopoly you express. They ignire that the monopoly is in apple approval not in anything real.
As a kid in the local radio shack testing TV tubes with my dad. Seeing the diode and resistors drawers, the soldering irons and tiny tool of all sorts. I thought kids like me were gone. I stand corrected. That kids has it all.
exactly, opening up electronics and looking whats inside was a sign of curiosity, something we encouraged kids to have. to learn stuff by themselves, to be interested in stuff, to innovate in the future.
That was an amazing testimony. I like the schematic with the Bosch dish washer. I don’t disagree with someone that does not know how to read schematics they might hurt themselves but most people that don’t know or have knowledge rarely open up something to try and fix themselves
Thing is with any device you might hurt your self, kill your self or damage the device, IF you dont look into it properly and understand how it operates. Everyone needs to learn least the basics of operation to operate device safely and thats why there is owners manual with the device, explaining how to operates. Adding electronic schematics and explosion view of mechanical systems to understand how its assembled to be taken apart makes things much easier and is in the sense extension of understanding how it works. Sure electronics are bit different skill set than using the device, but you can learn electronics and hence understand the device just as good as the engineer who design it, if you really want to and make repairs possibly even better and safer than said engineer could, with past experiences with other makes and models. For dish washer anecdote pulling washer out and inspecting wiring while its unplugged and some time has passed to let capacitors drain is something anyone can do, same as replacing them. If issue is not the wires you can delve deeper or hire 3rd party to take a look and figure the fault. Repairing it another hand comes impossible if spare parts cannot be bought and figuring out how the device works, that would been easy from schematics, now takes hours, making it unpractical except those who find people with experience apple products with known fault points and can quickly find it, or have made their own reverse engineered schematics before hand to be serve customers better, despite company trying to sabotage 3rd party repair, to force people to buy new devices. I barely know nothing about main voltage devices, thats why i approach faults carefully, using extension cords with on/off switch, never grab anything where shock would force hand to close and keep electrocuting me and always work with the devices internals when its unplugged and capacitors drained. Basic level stuff and precautions. This way i have been able to fix multitude of appliances and those what i have not been able to, easy solution is to out source that to someone who does. Just got free video projector. It worked first day, but next day there was a sharp snap and after opening it rectifier had blown to peaces. I collected the peaces, solved the puzzle to get correct parts number, got the part, soldered in place and now it will last long as the bulb will. Total repair cost 2 hours of my time and 25€ rectifier what is kinda steep price for single component, but not bad price for projector that had barely used bulb.
Following you from Vienna. Love what you doing ! Thx a lot for your dedication. Some months ago, I decided to fix my noisy Samsung washing machine. I had a technician coming in. He found the problem within 10 minutes. The pump bearings of 1 of the 2 pumps was rattling. I told him: "I wanna fix that of my own, just send me the part". He was fine with that, we had a fine chat about washing machines and he gave me some tipps how to open up the machine and what to watch out for. A week later I got the part, just paying for the part. No working time, no transportation cost, niente. I opened up the thing like he told me. In the process I learned a lot. Some narrow hoses were cogged up with gunk. I replaced the part. Hell yeah, what a feeling! Everytings fine eversince. Sure enough, next time I try to order that part directly from the manufacturer and spend even less. If that is possible, I kinda think they only sell to authorized technicians... We will see. Thanx for reading ;)
Not sure where you live, but there's a shop down the street from me called Appliance Parts Depot. They'll sell any part for any appliance to anybody at any time - you just have to know the parr you need and have the money to pay for it. If you don't have such a store nearby, I'm sure you could find any part you need online.
Well done sir I’m a Maryland man and it makes proud to know we have young men like you in our state that not only is well educated well spoken and respectful but is not afraid to stand up to make sure right is right and those that are wrong get told y …….ty
My refrigerator repair guy quoted me 500 dollars to fix my fridge. I got the part myself and told him I would fix it myself. He told me it wasn't that simple. You have to reboot the computer to get it to work. I called the place I got the part from and asked them how to reboot it. They said plug it in! That dude wanted to charge me 500 dollars for a 100 dollar part and the privilege of plugging it in 🤣
Similar with my car. An ABS sensor failed. Dealership repair quote: £450 Independent repair quote: £200 ODB2 port WiFi adapter: £10 Manufacturer phone fault code app £5 Sensor: £18 30-40 mins of my time (using software, determining which sensor broke & replacing said sensor) Total £33. The current car industry is mandated by international laws to install and use Obd2 protocols so that independent garages and even owners can repair their own vehicles. Why should the electronics industry be any different
You're missing the point. He doesn't "know more" than the people he's arguing against. Those people know exactly what they're doing. The company wants people to buy new phones because they cost more. It's about money and it always will be while these corporate giants have the politicians in their pocket.
who doesn't want to keep electronics out of land fills. I mean I have heard these smartphones end up leaking unsafe chemicals. that thing with the schematics is right on, we used to get them for all electronics back in the day when companies wanted their consumers to be well informed about the products.
Now now, remember the chemicals are only "unsafe", because the EPA (under the current administration) just haven't gotten around to removing them from the list of unsafe chemicals yet... soon these chemicals can be "safely" used in everything from baby-toys to baby-food!
most phones and appliances are recycled. try putting a tv, vcr, or microwave out for the trash man, he will leave it there. in my state it illegal to dispose of electronic items in the trash/landfill. i'm not saying it doesn't happen. but there are literally 1000's of other chemicals in those land fills. AND land filles are LINED, they have a liner put in before any trash ever gets placed and all water is collected and filtered. phones are valuable and often sold to recyclers.
I took an electronics class in high school back in the 70s. It introduced me to a local repair supply store where I could go to and purchase the schematics of almost anything - they had many in stock - including the one I used to repair a broken TV in my class. That's how I ended up with my own TV in my bedroom. The electronics teacher let me take it home - the program was unfunded and disbanded. >:-< It was a black and white model with a sheet metal case, and about a 23cm picture tube. Fairly heavy.
It's not about the companies wanting their customers to be well informed. It's up to government to make manuals and service manuals mandatory to consumers for buying products. Especially apple ( bloody crooks charging $1500 for a damn phone)
