The TIE Defender would have screwed up the Rebels if the Emperor didn't choose Tarkin Space Dark ball with it's big *Pew Pew* cannon, but Thrawn idea, to make the perfect fighter... That guy is a genius.

I would go as far as to say that the Tri-Fighter is the best starfighter in all of Star Wars. I think you shouls have talked a bit more about the missile launcher , because this is the weapon that gives the ship a amssive degree of flexbility. Load it up with Buzz-Droid missiles, and a squadron of them can effectively deny the enemy starfighters massive swathes of space, which can be used to keep the enemy bombers way from your capital ships. Or give it some Concussion missiles, and in swarms those babies can even become a threat to heavy enemy units.

I've always loved the TIE Defender, ever since it first appeared in the TIE Fighter: Defenders of the Empire PC game (which is also the source of the Missile Boat and others). Flying it was a freaking dream. Those three PC Star Wars flight games (X-wing and X-wing vs TIE fighter were the 1st and 3rd) introduced a great variety of spacecraft to Star Wars.

Legacy Era, I don't agree. Remember that the Twin-Tail is actually considered obsolete by the Galactic Alliance - the Crossfire is it's replacement, which is why the Jedi were able to get them for use on the cheap. It is more manouverable than the Crossfire, but given the Predator is even moreso, going with a less manouverable but better shielded and armed Crossfire does seem to me the better bet.

There's no disputing the power of the tri-fighter. Happy to see the praise of the Clone Wars era since IMHO that's where the best ships, fighters, vehicles, and tactics lie

You should do the old republic era and more capital ship lore from that era

I think the later generation X wings deserve a mention too, especially the Stealth X. Needs to have a jedi pilot to make full use of it, but between the stealth features and the shadow bombs, those things could take anything from a fighter up to a corvette single handed.

I'm always rather shy about commenting, and I have no idea of this will be seen at all, but I want to say that your videos are very helpful, interesting, and all around enjoyable. I consider myself a huge fan of Star Wars, having been a fan since the age of 2 (with myself being 19 now), but I've never given too much thought to the ships. With your videos on ships, ship types, ship versus, and other ship battles, it's now made me look at each Star Wars movie in a different light, especially scenes with space battles and such. I'm a new subscriber, but I already look forward to your videos every day, and I've been binge watching them to catch up, so in short I just wished to say thank you for being a good content provider.

I love the K-wing, it looks absolutely clunky and ridiculous but I love its weapon loadout, and love reminding my star wars fan friends that the thing somehow packed a quad turbolaser according to some sources. Who here would love to see a series where Eckhart designs his own, unique ships. There'd be limits based on function, era specific technology, cost per ship, ect. Plus, it's Eckhartsladder, the best Star Wars channel, you know it'd be amazing.

TIE Defender definitely my pick. I know a single Missile Boat can take down a flight group of TIE Defender easily, but TIE Defender is a complete fighter. TIE Defender has formidable shields, 4 laser cannon, and .. ION CANNON. Ion Cannon comes pretty handy against big targets. I usually just disable transport, shuttle, escort shuttles, assault transports, corvettes, and destroy them later. TIE Defender can also be equipped with tractor beam, very handy when against rogue TIE Advanced.

Kinda surprised you did the twintails but didn't do the sith annihilator. Now that thing was a beast.

Hehe, The Defender - I love to do nothing more than fill my unit cap with these things when playing Star Wars - Empire at War. They are great at just about everything.

I would like for you to Cover the Swarm Wars era. As well as the Knights of the Old republic era. Like the Old republic Sith, and Mandalor.

The Tie Defender and Gunboat were great in X wing vs Tie fighter. Really wish EA would remake it.

I always thought that the Rogue class starfighter was thoroughly underrated. The ONLY issue I have with the X-83 Twin tail is asthetic. It looks like some sort of rc model plane.

Jagged, Tahiry and Ashik used Tie defenders to evacuate Gillad Pelleaon when Daala and mostly Drikl Lacersen baraged it with baradium nukes.... even almost 50 years after inception the fighters managed to hold well against turbolasers and and whatver could be scrambled against them (although admitedly at that time imperial moffs did not have the most up to date hardware in personal arsenals... and neither did Daala - though even their forces managed to hold up against most modern ships of the line Empire of the Hand sent to help Jagged.)

I personally love the B-wing, though not the best, it certainly brought the most fire power out of all the Rebel fighters. I feel your video was damn accurate however, just felt the old B was worthy of a shout out.

Hi nice video! You chose the Tie/Defender as one of the best. The First Order made the Tie Silencer, which was partially based off the Tie/Defender. Do you think the Tie Silencer was stronger/faster or was it a downgrade as starfigther?

The Missle Boat's SLAM system wasn't mentioned. Being able to take energy from the sheilds, cannon and tractor beam and add it to the SubLight Acceleration Motor to boost the velocity of the Missle Boat to sometimes 100%+ speed boost. However. When you put it's cost and the cost of the 160 misses together, it's about 120,000 credits in missles, not including tracotor beam. Oh, and small production run means a lot of credits per ship for R&D. It's basically the XB-70 Valkery of Star Wars.

Hey eckharts how about for your next versus match you do the mammoth mk2 from command and conquer vs the AT-AT?

TIE Defender is a very cool, very powerful ship - but back when I played the TIE Fighter game (and add on packs), I personally preferred flying the TIE Avenger. Smaller target profile, pretty close in speed and agility, decent shields and parity with the Defender in laser and missile armament (no ion cannons).

Could you go over like ship classes ie desteoyer dreadnaught frigate heavy/light cruiser ect?

Excellent breakdown. Oddly enough, I pretty much agree with your assessments in all eras; I suspect the E-Wing could handle a TIE Defender, though it's less a clear-cut case of one being better than the other and more being able to face it on its own terms. As for what I think about Star Wars fighter designs more generally... I think rear turrets are an idea that looks fantastic on paper, but never quite measures up in practice. In theory, it means the fighter can still shoot at bad guys, even when the bad guys have managed to get on the good guy's six-o'clock. In practice, however, well... There's a reason that not many combat airplanes carry rear gunners. Generally, the only ones that do are those that can't maneuver very well to begin with, like bombers. With relatively low speeds and poor maneuverability, the only way large aircraft could deal with fast, agile enemy fighters by themselves was to outgun them, and that never quite worked as well as the bomber crews hoped. WW2 bombing campaigns faced huge losses from enemy fighters, despite each bomber carrying a dozen medium and heavy machine guns, and only really became 'safe' when long-range fighters like the Mustang were built to escort them all the way. Germany experimented with so-called "heavy fighters" during the Battle of Britain, built with thick armor plating (well, thick armor for an airplane, at least) and armed with extra gun turrets to attack Allied planes from all angles. In practice, British Hurricanes and Spitfires were able to zip in, blaze away with their traditional front-towards-enemy machine guns, and scoot away before the German planes' turrets could track and engage them. Adding a rear turret is a tacit admission that the other side's fighters so completely outmaneuver yours that they can get on your tail whenever they want, and can stay there as long as they feel like it, so the only thing you can do is make it a bit riskier for them. Again, that makes sense for bombers of the WW2 and post-war eras, but historical fighter planes are generally better off without them.

100% agree on the tri fighter. I feel like the interceptor role was made for droid fighters; droids are much more capable of withstanding high speeds and g-force than organics, and it frees up space to put more tech and weapons in a smaller frame.

Hi Eck, I'd like to hear your thoughts on old republic fighters (Kotor/Kotor II era), I love that period in SW history....
