Predictions: I cannot imagine the Tri Fighter coming anywhere other than first: 3 independent thrusters and no concern for organic pilots give it the best speed and mobility, it's the smallest ship in the list, and unlike the Vulture Droid it's explicitly described as being "Intelligent" rather than stupid. It's even apparently relatively bulky for an Inteceptor. Then there's the frankly baffling level of firepower it carries: Somehow they managed to fit 6 missiles on it (I suspect the Colicoid Creation Nest are employing Time Lords), it's centrally mounted main weapon is described as a "medium" or "heavy" laser cannon (ie. it's unusually accurate and powerful), and then, because the Colicoids don't know the meaning of the words "stop, they're already dead" there's also a light laser cannon on each of the 3 arms _mounted on rails so they can be independently aimed._ It's a miracle that the CIS ever lost a space battle. Sure it's a droid, and Star Wars nerfs droids, but when it's superior to the competitors in every category that really isn't going to matter. _This comment was sponsored by the Colicoid Creation Nest - "We sell killer robots for meat"._ (2. One thing you kind of missed about the droid Tri-Fighter was that their droid brains were actually very advanced, and they could actually learn during engagements (although that is not as easy to come by unless you've read the Revenge of the Sith novelization). Otherwise, great vid, and I wasn't actually expecting the winner to be the one that it was, simply because of the flaw you found with it.

My fav shape of interceptor is tri fighter,it looks beautiful and deadly at the same time.

Don't forget the 360 degree swivel on the A-Wing's cannons. That's a very significant threat for any enemy that does manage to out maneouvre one and get on it's tail. Though I can't remember if these are a standard feature or a modification

The tri fighter is my favorite fighter in all of star wars. For all of the reasons you stated and because of its discord missles. Which are so under used in canon its horrible.

Although the Tie-Interceptor was a improvement over the Tie-Fighter it was never enough to reliably beat Rebel starfighters. But, I do have a question: What version of the A-Wing are we talking about here? The Legends (Superior) Version or the Canon (Inferior) Version?

Well, I think the A-Wing is more like an interceptor than the Tri-Droid, but I agree that the Tri-Droid is the best on this list.

Of course the Tri Fighter is one of the best there is very reliable with their buzz droids.

Something I must point out, dogfighting should not matter to an interceptor. What it needs to do is rapidly chase down enemy craft or intercept them before they can get to their target. Having missiles, heavy firepower and good straight line speed should be all that matters.

The Tie Interceptor has always been one of my favorites, but my vote goes to a dark horse that isn't on this list... the Madalorian Fang Fighter, as flown by Fenn Rau in season 2 of Rebels

This comparison is faulty. In order to establish which is the best interceptor, you need to define what an interceptor is, and then ask which craft best fulfills the role. In real-world terms, an interceptor is an aircraft (or, in this case, spacecraft) that is intended to defend against enemy bombers or other strike craft. It must quickly launch, be able to maintain CAP for extended periods, have enough firepower to swiftly bring down approaching targets, and have the speed to arrive at its destination in short order. Interceptors are defensive weapon systems. As such, a hyperdrive is of limited use in the role as a hyperdrive facilitates long-range offensive action. Since the interception role does not imply attack, there's really no need for a hyperdrive *unless* the interceptors are able to detect bombers in hyperspace, and interdict them with gravity wells. As far as I know, this just isn't the case. There's also a lot of "I think" for a video that's supposed to be an objective comparison. Comparing shields in Star Wars is futile, as shields (at least when we discuss fighters) never seem to help much. For example, single hits from TIE cannonade causes even X-Wings and Y-Wings to combust and blow apart into fragments. Where are the shields, then? They can hardly be quantified. You seem to put a lot of emphasis on dogfighting ability (which is strange; Interceptors aren't in the business of dogfighting as it's a frivolous waste of time when you're trying to intercept incoming strike craft from your carrier.) You then go on to say that the A-Wing is less maneuverable than the TIE Interceptor (maneuverability being key in a dogfight,) and further go on to praise "every dogfighting metric" of the A-Wing. These are some gymnastics.

I think something worth including in these, in the production of the various vehicles and weapons, how expensive were they, or if it isn't known your best estimates, how fast could one be made, how much training did it take to use ect... BTW totally agree with the ranking.

I've seen references to TIE pilots having targeting sensors built into their helmets. I've always speculated that this is something like an AR HUD that allows them to "see" beyond the hull of their ship when they look around. The reason for this hypothesis is that in ANH we see Vader and a TIE pilot look up and to the side in the direction of the incoming Millennium Falcon and in the TIE Fighter and X-wing vs TIE Fighter games, additional viewpoints are available to players flying the TIE model ships.

What I think you forget in your analysis is that shields increase maneuverability in atmosphere by decreasing friction. This means that ships like the A-wing or V-wing perform better in-atmosphere than there stats would indicate. Although space is their primary combat purview it does mean that ships with shields handle better in atmosphere, something to keep in mind. Thanks for the great videos.

Spot on, great analysis. I think that the A-wing is by far the best overall ship on this list, but only because in addition to being a good interceptor it is also the only true multirole ship on the list: it has the maneuverability and survivability to fill a dogfighter/escort role and its concussion missile launchers mean that it can even fill the role of light bomber in a pinch. However, the question at hand is specifically which is the best interceptor and I think you're right that the trifighter takes the crown in that particular role. Interception is all about two objectives: get to your target quickly, and then have enough firepower to destroy or at least disrupt the tactics of the target you're intercepting. As the fastest ship on the list it already has a huge head start. Speed is always going to be the gold standard for interception. From there, the medium laser, three light lasers, and the utility hardpoint all combine to give the trifighter more than enough firepower to bring to bear once they've reached the target. It suffers from survivability problems due to lacking a human pilot or deflector shields, but those are offset by the easy replaceability of a drone craft (no pilot to lose) and the fact that survival is not a requirement of successful interception.

Nice video. While I do agree with your overall choices, I would have liked an introduction that clarified how an interceptor is different from a space superiority fighter. To my knowledge, interceptors are designed to engage at long range, protecting their support craft by preventing the enemy from getting close. They could be escorting bombers & need to engage space superiority fighters, or attack bombers before they get in range of capital ships. In this instance the TIE Interceptor works very well with the much slower TIE Bomber, as the Rebel CAP would have to engage them before taking out the Bombers. They still are not the best interceptors, I agree, but this is a case where Imperial simplicity does play well together. As an aside, the fact that the Resistance A-wings & X-Wings in 'The Last Jedi' waited until the First Order TIE's were on top of the bombers to engage is what I felt essentially doomed both bomber squadrons.

You need to play the old school games, X-Wing, TIE FIghter, and X-Wing vs TIE Fighter. That would give you more perspective on roles, how well they work against each other.

Best stand alone ship? Millennium Falcon, the Ghost, Slave 1, and the Twilight, Anakin’s personal ship? Not quite factions versus, since two of them belong to rebels, and one is a bounty hunter, but as a stand alone episode for stand alone ships?

I would like to vouch for the eta-II Actis-class Jedi Interceptor as a superior interceptor, especially when provided with the intended force enhanced pilots, the Jedi.

Good pick I agree the tri-fighter is the best since it can even outmaneuver a Jedi because it can do turns that can destroy an organic pilot

Something Star Wars never took into consideration is that Droids would probably survive maneuvers that organics could not. Even with the space magic of G-Defusers, slap some extra thrusters on the tri-fighter to allow it to make abrupt stops, give it a zero degree turning arc, make it able to jolt left and right... You've got a beast right there!

IMO I think the discord missiles, the ability of the tri to really hunt in packs, and the other reasons that you mentioned make it the superior interceptor.

I personally love the V-Wing even if it was just shown briefly in ROTS. But the A-Wing is just a beast

100% agree that the droid tri-fighter is superior. Having buzz-droids as part of your payload is OP. Imagine using a bunch of buzz droids to take out a capital ship with nothing but these tiny interceptors. I don't know why we never saw that happen (as far as i know) because a capital ship would have no defense against something like that.

IIRC, the TIE Interceptor was basically taking the speed and some of the firepower of the TIE Advanced X1 and "adding" it to the TIE Fighter. I guess sort of a compromise between the TIE Fighter and mass producing the X1. As for the A-Wing, I do like the fact that it can also angle its laser cannons slightly so it can shoot targets slightly higher or lower than itself when in pursuit while at least some models were even capable of swiveling their laser cannons 180° and able to shoot at pursuers.

I used to really enjoy doing the star fighter battles in Battlefront 2, and the droid Tri Fighter was by far my favorite, it could just deal so much damage and be incredibly evasive

You forgot to mention the targeting sensor jammer the A-wing had making it even more difficult for enemy ships to lock onto it, especially droid piloted ships who rely exclusively on electronic systems A-wing jamming systems excel against

Tri-fighter was the obvious pick, its small profile, crazy firepower, and insane speed and maneuverability make it the best interceptor to grace the galaxy. I will make sure to consult the Colicoid Creation Nest more often.

I personally like the TIE Avenger, it does everything the TIE/in does but has all its flaws corrected. Shields, hyperdrive and warhead payload. Ultimately the Defender pretty much made it obsolete but it would probably have been far cheaper to phase out standard TIE's into. The TIE Avenger is basically the final mass production variant of Vaders TIE Advanced prototype with some significant improvements to speed and maneuverability
