Thai tea in Thailand is sweetened by sweet condensed milk, top with condensed milk. Not sugar and half&half, bro, it you wanna make it 'autentic'. However, your recipe will absolutely taste good. We all know just by looking. It will just taste a tad different from what we had in Thailand.

Authentic Cha Yen tea is mixed with condensed milk and Carnation milk, and vanilla extract. I sometimes add some coconut milk as well.

I’m pretty sure the authentic Thai tea has Ceylon Orange Pekoe with Cardamom and Star Anise and Orange blossom mixed in. I typically use a bit of orange blossom water to steep the tea. I use twinnings for the Orange Pekoe

Are the thai tea kits at Costco worth the money? I would love to make this at home. My favorite thai place gave me the recipe for peanut sauce that is, hands down the best I've had. What's half and half? I don't think that exists in Southeast Asia. Maybe just use evaporated and condensed milk to avoid the complications.

I made this the way you suggested 4 cups of water and 3/4 tea leaves and it came out so bitter and I only had about 2 cups of tea after it steeped. Is this normal?

A few notes about thai tea. In thailand, bangkok, krabi, hua hinn the places where I have been to in thailand as american, I saw cha tra mue also known as number 1 hand brand. This is the only brand you see everywhere that has many many of its own stalls. Even regular people sell just this product in booths. The pantai brand I never saw anywhere in thailand however, It is just as good possibly slightly better. I never saw any other tea brands except chatramue which was found everywhere. I tasted many thai teas some of them were terrible. Some had too much milk or not enough thai tea. I had many thai teas that were amazing!!! If you have thai tea and it doesn't wow you its because they don't know how to make it or are cutting costs. With milk it can taste like a delicious milkshake dessert or a nice milky tea depending on how they make it. Thai tea is made differently everywhere you go. I drink a lot of thai tea no milk although I like both. They use carnation sweetened condensed milk and evaporated milk from cans(some use powder). They do add sugar with the other sweeteners despite one person's comment. They do not add coconut or vanilla. Thai tea mix often comes with vanilla in the spice mix already.
