I came up with my own Ugly starfighter ages ago, used in a forum RP. Its called the AX-wing starfighter/interceptor or the Ax-class Interceptor. Do you think such a ship would actually work well in combat, or end up vaped? www.deviantart.com/darth-silas/art/Ugly-Starfighter-Ax-class-Interceptor-839679159
Ties are made for mass use and swarm tactics. So it depends on what your goals are. Besting them at their creator's goals would be making a cheaper fighter that is just as or more effective.
Bill Clark why does everyone assume Fighters are the only TIEs? There were plenty of heavy TIEs that were used for bombing, boarding, transport, heavy assault, etc. there’s also the Interceptor that had a lot more firepower than Fighters making them dangerous even outside swarms, and it was made to eventually replace the Fighter.
Eck: “Directly mentions the similarity between the Tri and the Phantom.” Ever-helpful RU-vid commenters: _”HEy eCK ThAT LOoKS LiKe tHe TIe PHaNtOM hAVe YoU hEArD oF It?”_
I Jedi is one of my fav EU books in the way it steps back from the normal cast of characters and gives us a new look at the Universe. Its also mu bible/blue print on how a light saber is made and showing that not every Jedi can do it right the first time.
Most of them were, all of them had poor durability even though some were decent overall designs. X-TIEs were decent, Y-TIEs were horrible, but this one is actually really good, shipyard production level.
Despite being the type of fighter that belong in the hood as they have that Ghetto look some were awesome like the Death seed fighter, the Y Wing with Tie fighter wings ( which combines both the strengths of the TIE and Y Wing), the Clutch which I thought was made by the empire only to fond out its not and is better than the standard TIE LN
@@dat581 that's player skill there I'd say. You also took a ship made for fighter combat against an all arounder. You should be able to leverage said skill to win the matchup
An "ugly" I would like to actually see are basically what we did with the Mustang when we made the Twin Mustang. Take two of the same ship, lop off the wings of the opposite side of each, and attach them to each other with some central wing and structural components. The "Twin X-wing" could potentially be a pretty interesting ship. The pilot can sit in one side, with an enlarged cockpit so that a second person can also be present, and the torpedo area on that side could be replaced with another laser, giving the "Twin-X" a weapon that fires directly in front of the pilot where it will be easier to aim at smaller targets. The other side can have its cockpit and life support replaced with just a bigger, stronger torpedo system. The "far side's" wing-tip laser cannons could perhaps be relocated to the far side body as well (to bring them closer to the other weapons), and perhaps some additional ones could be mounted on the middle connecting segment. Of course, my favorite idea for an "ugly" would be something like: Take a larger body, like that of the Y-wing, and attach 2/3 of an X-wing on each side, replace said X-wings' cockpits and life supports with another laser, and use this slightly Star-Fox looking contraption to blast the crap out of stuff with your new heavy bomber loaded with lots of high power blasters and torpedos. "Twin" versions of some fighters would be cool to see, even if as only more limited production run variants for long range missions or as a stopgap improvement to the fighter before new models are fully developed.
Googled and it's Corran Horn. I thought you said *Corn Horn,* and with a name like that I'd be turning to the dark side just to get a new name - even Darth is better than Corn as a given name. It sounds like a derogatory nickname in jail - the new boy's a corn horn.
Even the basic Tie design could be improved just by mounting the panels horizontally - perpendicular to the cockpit so they don't block visibility at all, instead of vertically where they greatly limit field of view. Add in folding Lamda shuttle style connections so they can be stored with the panels vertical and you've got a very compact footprint for a hanger bay. Even without a folding mechanism, a Tie Flatpack (!) can be racked on top of each other easier, to save space - as there's not all the negative space between the panels (a giant box) taking up room. And the panels could double as wings in atmosphere, giving it amazing performance (in atmosphere performance being a weakness of Ties, even a old Headhunter could outturn them). Take inspiration from the Tie Striker. Now the plans for those were kept on … oh NVM.
TIE Hunter and TIE Phantom are still the best TIE variants in my book. Most unique designs, TIE Hunter is more balanced and lest costly than the TIE Defender, and the TIE Phantom has a cloaking device. 'nuff said.
There was a spot where they put shields and 4 concussion Missile launchers near the lasers on tie interceptors...THOSE are better...because they are faster lol
@@MobiusLeader007 interceptor was by far my favorite of the tie line...or the scimitar that Thrawn used for bomber designs...both were able to be heavily modified
Aside from ties, nothing could beat the firespray...my variant of it would have a lot more firepower and a lot more fuel consumption than Boba Fett's and have a lot less store space but the speed capabilities with the 4 incom fusial thrust engines from the XJs would make a HELL of a ship
I don't know if he is or hasn't been in the military, I have not been in the military. But the term is used, normally for pickup trucks armed with anything from a heavy machine gun to recoiless rifles to the turrent of a IFV like a BMP 1. They are a status symbol amoung warlords in Africa and they were used heavily by ISIS.
1:08 I know exactly where this is. This game is burnt into my brain. I will probably instantly recognize this even when I'm an old man on his dying bed.
In direct combat if the pilot skills were similar, Raptor would most likely win because it had concussion missiles, double the ammount of laser cannons and was faster and more maneuverable. However, the Clutch was much cheaper, so there is that factor.
One of, if not my favorite legends books, by my absolute favorite legends author. I love Stockpiles books. Of course I am a bit biased in calling him my favorite for a few reasons. All tied in to the X-wing series. They were the first legends books I read, making him my first author, and they are about my absolute favorite part of Star Wars, the space combat, and even more specifically, the fighters. But God did I love those books. Don't remember whi h one it was in. But the screen where they take down an imperial 2 star destroyer with nothing more the 12 x-wings. That was incredible.
Well, technically it isn't that hard. When you're government that had a need to build 1000000000 fighters, you are kind of limited in terms of budget(no, they're not, but no one cares), production line flexibility, time and maintenance. A pirate has 100 wrecked ships and their parts, doesn't care about copyright, design quirks, third party maintenance, cohesion with other imperial designs like carriers, setting up mass production, budget. You just take whatever parts you like and assemble them together. Power source is too weak? Strap a second one. Need more engines? Strap more engines. Weaponry? Go wild!
I actually still have I, Jedi great book, read it in my teens. Not going to lie though everytime they kept calling this tie a trifighter, I kept picturing pilots flying around in droid trifighters. Confused me for years.
Pills _ I think he knew what he wanted to write and how to do about it. Corn was HIS character so he knew him inside and out. I loved the x-wing novels Wow really takes me back to my youth
You know, i was looking over the page, saw the thumbnail for this video and said 'Is that a 'Trip'? Yeah, I read 'I, Jedi' because I liked that Corran Horn wasn't the all-powerful Jedi type (*coughKypDurroncough*) - the 'clipped mynock', as someone called him - and because of that, the image of a 'trip''s always stayed in my head.
Stackpole's BattleTech novels made me a Star Wars fan. I'd read all the BattleTech novels at my local library, so I went looking for more Stackpole and found his X-Wing novels. I'd seen and enjoyed the movies (only the OT existed, prequels were a few years away) but it was those novels that led me into the EU, and turned me into a real fan.
It'd be interesting if these were actually made by the pirates acquiring a stockpile of Phantom wings. They'd assume a generic Tie cockpit would go in the middle and then just roll them out exactly how we see them.
Image the following. The reason why there is a huge hole in Zeta Halo when BroHammer picks up Cheif could be because the Infinity blew up, like the Autum, but Cortana wanted to keep it intact because shes looking for something. Well, its been like 2 years from the end of halo 5, and Infinity was the last hope, so destroying it would bring us back to that gritty survival experice from halo 1. In fact, i can very well see a nearly identical version of Halo 1 happening between halo 5 and infinite. While id love to revisit that, its a story weve allready seen, which is why they jumped over it. At this point, the start of halo infinite, Cheof and BroHammer try to escape the Created, as well as reconnect with scattered UNSC forces. Remember, Infinity is MUCH bigger than Pillar of Autum, with 9000 naval crew and 7000 troops plus spartans. Its carring capability is only paralleled by the Pheonix-class's 9000 troops. Many of these forces very likly still are on the ring, and since Cortana cant blast them out by force, she has to play cat 'n mouse, were the promethians and submited covenant troops arnt anywhere nere as effective as Guardian in space. It really reminds me of that desprate yet slightly hopeful feeling the UNSC had during the war.
Uglies ignore one apparent part of Star Wars lore, that apparently _modified light cargo ships are more formidable._ *If I was a pirate operator* I'd just get a bunch of small gunships or modify sturdy shuttles into such. Stick top and bottom mounted turrets with laser cannons (quad mount), maybe even go for side mounted ones as well, and you've got a ship that just sweeps the field of snub fighters. Give it oversized engines and decent shields and it's a killer. Maybe even mount turbolasers and ion cannons for dealing with larger ships - a powerful ion cannon front mounted would be great for disabling cargo ships ect. Just five it a gimbal mount so the ship can still dodge while nailing the mark. A shuttle's passenger/cargo compartment can be converted to an engineering section, with extra reactors, drives and shields taking the space. In addition if you've got the resources, launchers for torpedoes can have a lot of ammo. And with the extra space provided by a larger interior, it allows you to use less compact optimised components if military grade stuff isn't available, or just stick in larger military grade stuff than a snub fighter could carry, like vastly superior sensors. Imagine the Millennium Falcon turned into a pure combat vessel, with just the cockpit for the crew and access ways to the guns - and lots more guns (oh and a flight engineer). Or the firepower of the Falcon as it was on a much smaller craft that can still tank and dodge and run. And best of all, spares aren't an issue.
Step one: Assume that the characters in the show are not, as a rule, stupid. Sure, they can be short sighted for one reason or another. But if nobody does something, there's probably a good reason. Maybe it's harder to trust your average pirate recruit with a gunship/light corvette; you gave them a fighter because then they'll need the carrier to get out afterwards. Maybe they're stuck with the hulls they can get their hands on, and need those cargo holds to actually haul their loot. Maybe it's just expensive to rebuild a ship like that, or the parts you'd want aren't readily available; not many people get into piracy because they're rich. It's also pretty likely that smuggling pays about as well, and when that works right nobody shoots anybody; that has obvious benefits.
A pretty good and interesting video. The line about TIE fighter parts being the third most plentiful thing in the universe after hydrogen and stupidity was pretty good. What makes a good superiority fighter? Some would say uncompromising agility, speed and firepower always wins, but I say that durability, survivability and ergonomics are just as important. When Seinar built the TIE-LN, it was an uncompromisingly fast and agile ship, armed with the biggest pair of cannons that they could fit on it. They forgot about the pilot though, because he has to be flying that thing. He needs to see what's going on, be able to control the craft to the point where the craft is an extension of his body, and he be reasonably confident he will survive. The Clutch ticks those boxes, just by replacing the TIE wings, adding some better controls, and a shield. Simple, but it works.
This is unsurprising considering the Empire's views on using TIEs as a swarm weapon, which makes sense with the Tarkin Doctrine. Not a lot of people want to tangle with a SD that carries tons of fighters that can easily fly circles around slower vessels.
At the end, the term is Operational Range. Operational life is likely also lesser due to the extra strain on the charging system, but that isn't the problem for the pilot unless they are very good
IMHO a ugly composed of a X-Wing body (or a Headhunter if you can't get a X-Wing, or don't want to cut one up) and a *_ARC-170's wings and engines_* would be formidable. So would the body of a Y-Wing instead, it would have the additional nose mounted laser cannons in addition to the wing mounted turbolasers of the ARC-170. And in all cases the engines would be pushing a lot less mass, making it a pocket rocket.
Hello everyone, I thought it might be fun if during this time at home we could do a vehicle design competition. This could range from capital ships to star fighters or even tanks, and they could be reviewed on his channel. Drop a like(this isn’t meant to get likes, but it will probably get his attention) so he can hear this idea and possibly make it happen.
I always pictured it as a TIE Phantom, but without the cylindrical cockpit, replacing it with a standard TIE one man ball cockpit. Exactly what you would get if you have access to at least some level of imperial industrial manufacturing, as the Invids had, but couldn't afford to make TIE Defenders or Phantoms. Redesign them to make use of what you do have.
You finally did a video about the 'Clutch'! I have been waiting for this video for some time. I could be wrong since I haven't read I, Jedi in a while, but when I did read it, the 'Clutch' didn't strike me as a vehicle cobbled together in a junkyard. Corran Horn's impressions gave me the idea that it was purposely manufactured off of a standard assembly line. In my personal head canon, the TIE Trifighter/'Clutch' was a knock-off of the TIE Phantom as that project was permanently crippled in the game Rebel Assault 2. However, like in real-world failed projects, the Empire tried to salvage as much as they easily could after spending so much on the TIE Phantom. In the end they could have set up a prototype manufacturing line to make use of the cheaper elements of the TIE Phantom design, only for the Empire to crumble and the manufacturing line to eventually fall into the hands of Leonia Tavira.
best guess, is that they could manufacture all the parts if they wanted but usually they could salvage most of them and simply needed to produce the remaining components. ild probably pay for any licenses and just start building these like a normal star fighter myself
Im sure most people know this but Corran Horn is in Jedi Academy. Luke sends him to Wayland the same time he sends you to Hoth I believe then you see him once more at the beginning of the korriban missions
That actually is quite an impressive TIE Variant (unofficial of course). A more low cost Defender, and I think the increased visibility would actually be a major advantage over the Defender. The TIE Phantom is one of my favorite TIE Variants mainly because of the improved visibility cockpit. I mean seriously how can you fly through space only looking forward and little slits upward.
Ah, the Invids :) - with a Clutch that in the end is better than the run of the mill X-Wing (it does have shields and in the end they manage to equip some of them with hyperdrives and they have better weapons - that Ion-Cannon that can disable starfighters is is pretty neat!)...ps: The Invids are imperials, they just don't know it (Leoni Tavira uses them for her own ends after all)
Do you guys plan on doing the republic commando books for the podcast? Would love to see you guys get to something other than the rebellion/new republic era books
To sure if there are less solar panels. Top one would be double sided and thus form a square which is basically 1 wing of regular tie fighter. You got 2 more wings on this design so you should have more solar.
Hi Eck. Are you from around Southern Ontario? I don't know if you noticed but i've seen a couple videos of Dave Filoni wearing GO Train hats and shirts. He normally has something Star Wars related on, but in one he had a GO Train T-shirt on and another a hat. I just find it funny. He's not Canadian so he must really like trains. Lol
