Just wanted to thank you for inspiring me to do our roof. One of those round to it jobs that we never got around to. It was much easier than expected, the dry weather helping enormously. Just a smallish single storey roof, but half a sack of moss safely removed later, I'm chuffed.👍

What happens if you knock a tile out? What if it's right at the top. Also have you got a link to the chemical you use to treat the roof after scrapping
@aemackintosh
@aemackintosh 5 лет назад
Steve Hughes You can adjust the tool to an even greater angle, 90 degrees if you want, and you end up waggling the pole from side to side a bit. That’s what I’m saying about finding it easier if you can get more side on, and it’s easier as you get lower down, like I’ve shown in the video. I haven’t knocked any tiles out yet on all the jobs I’ve done so far. Link to Algo Clear Pro in the description. 😃👍🏼

I've never seen roof scraping done here in the states (atleast not in California), must be a UK thing. Nice video👍.
@DaveB324
@DaveB324 5 лет назад
I work in the uk and would just spray it with ddac (Didecyldimethylammonium chloride) and then leave for a few weeks for all the moss etc to die and fall off with the rain etc Then clean the gutters out and have a nice clean roof Scraping the roof is for a more instant effect using sodium hypoclorite which will bleach the roof and leave the algae and moss free to grow back
@aemackintosh
@aemackintosh 5 лет назад
Thanks. I have pressure washed some roofs, but it’s a bit harsh on the roof and can be quite dangerous. Then I have used just biocide alone, the moss dies off but it doesn’t always completely drop off on its own in just the weather. So a combination of scraping and biocide together works really well.😃👍🏼

Alan Karr I use Algo Clear Pro biocide. It kills of any organic growth, so you can use it without scraping to kill the moss and let it drop off over time. However if the moss is very bad it may not drop off before it starts growing back. Usually it is stuck on there harder than you might think. So scraping first is a great way of achieving more immediate results for the customer.😃👍🏼

@@aemackintosh You blow pixie dust on the roof and the moss disappears! I'm scraping myself, right now. I found a small rake with flexible tongs that seems to be doing a fair job. I can get about the bottom four feet of roof working off the ladder, and that should allow me to safely work on the upper portions of the roof using the same tool. I also built a simple jig that holds my ladder in place and protects the gutter from being crushed. Should have done that thirty years ago. I'm also thinking about putting fitting a plank at the top of the ladder to give me better footing getting on and off the ladder, and providing a check from sliding off the roof.

@@aemackintosh > Very wise, I'm sure. I have a 200 foot nylon rope I used decades ago when climbing, I think I'll look at tieing that off on the opposite side of the house and using a carabiner to tie into it. I should be able to throw a hitch into the rope conveniently, and then use the carabiner to clip into the rope from a harness. I got quite a bit done today. Any suggestions on how to get rid of the moss that accumulates? I suppose using a broom to push it into the gutters would be good. I have a blower which I'll try out. And then using a hose to flush the gutters clear. Any better ideas? I see recommendations to treat the cleaned roof with a biocide. I suppose I'll shop for that at Home Depot. I found a couple of three tabs that need a nail replaced or pounded in, and a couple of places where old caulking should be renewed. I also found much of the gutter caked with dirt and mildew that was fairly resistant to coming clean. And a couple of gutter sections that needed old nails for the gutter pounded in, and a couple that I'll add an additional nail to for added strength. My gizmo that wedges into the gutter to hold the ladder and act as a standoff from the gutter so that it doesn't get crushed worked well. I'm using a 12 foot section of 1" steel pipe to lift it and set it in the gutter and remove it. That's kind of heavy, but it's what I had kicking around. Total out of pocket cost of the project so far is $0.00. Of course that doesn't include the risk of breaking my neck.
