In this video, I will show you how to automate master volume in FL Studio.
Master volume automation sounds simple enough, but there are many ways to do this in FL Studio, and unfortunately, many people use it the wrong way. It's not technically "wrong" but the volume automation will be much more efficient if you do it correctly. Volume automation is probably the most essential automation there is for a music producer.
You typically want the low-energy sections in your song to be more dynamic and more relaxing than the high-energy sections.
If you don't use volume automation correctly, then the low-energy sections will remain heavily compressed even after the master volume automation, which is not ideal because it will make your track sound more fatiguing and less varied when it comes to energy distribution.
Not only can this make it sound fatiguing, but it will also make the drop sound less energetic and impactful than it could have been,
In this FL Studio beginner tutorial, I will show you the two most common ways to add master volume automation in FL Studio. Note that in some situations, automating the fader can be preferred, if you for some reason want that compressed sound to remain, but in most cases, using a plugin to automate the master volume before the dynamics processing is the preferred way to do it in FL Studio, and any other daw too for that matter.

I do the same technique but with a Fruity Mute by automating its dry/wet knob on the mixer channel. I find it less tricky as I know my normal volume is at 0% on my automation clip. This way I don't need to copy/paste values inside my automation.

Thanks! That's good, I've noticed that even some professionals don't really know about this. It can definitely help the drop sound more energetic and powerful. As a mastering engineer, I often find myself having to add automation to "fix" the breakdown in tracks because it just sound too energetic and fatiguing. :) A track almost always works much better when you have a more dynamic and relaxing breakdown compared to the main parts :)

Hey, FWP. Do you consider Maximus to be just as effective as multiband compressor? I don't mean the Soundgoodizer presets, I mean as whole.
@FireWalkMusic
@FireWalkMusic Год назад
Maximus is FL Studio's ultimate "powerhouse" compression plugin. It is just as good, and even better than many third-party multiband compressors out there.

Indeed! As they say: The devil is in the detail. Small things like this really make a huge impact in the end. Automation is often what separates the beginners and the professionals when it comes to mixing. :)

So tedious having to insert a plugin then create an automation just to automate the clip gain when this is accessible very easily in almost every other daw..
@FireWalkMusic
@FireWalkMusic Год назад
For audio clips in the playlist you can just double click on the clip, then right click on the volume knob and automate it instead. :)

"how to automate the right way!" , but "there are no rules, there's no wrong method" so the title should have been- "automation methods for the master volume" how about automating the input knob on the compressor plugin? how about automating the busses or instrument volumes? Also, if your'e compressing a lot, a few db of gain reduction before the compressor might not do the job. clickbait and incomplete information?😅
@FireWalkMusic
@FireWalkMusic Год назад
I see your point, but unfortunately that title is not very SEO friendly, nor very specific or clickable. :) Most content creators on RU-vid try to make their titles as clickable as possible. That's just the way it is unfortunately. As a content creator, It's do or die. :) If nobody are clicking on your videos then there's no reason for you to keep making them. And the sad truth is that titles that are slightly "clickbaity" have many times higher clickthrough rate than more neutral titles. That said, I personally think this IS the correct way to do volume automation, which is why it's in the title to begin with, and I wanted to get this information across. 99% of the time this method will give the best results. Judging from the comments, a lot of people was clearly unaware of this technique, and many was also doing it the "wrong" way earlier. What If I were to tell you that you should NEVER put reverb on a kick? Or a stereo shaper? That would be true 99% of the time. But what if you wanted to make an FX kick during a breakdown for example? Then it would be OK to have reverb on it of course. There are always some rare situations where something that would be considered wrong most of the time would actually make sense, that's why I like to include a little note of caution about that in my videos. I've seen so many videos where people say NEVER under any circumstances do this! Sure, it's probably true 99,9% of the time, but it's not 100%, and if you're a beginner you deserve to know that there are always exceptions to these "rules" when it comes to music production. :)
