In Switzerland we enjoy on most marmelade jars a two-part cover: www.crowncork.com/closures-capping/innovations-closures/orbit-closure - It's an amazing everyday improvements, especially for older people (not John) with not much force in the hands left.

Your shirt has convinced me. I used to be a metric fan, favoring its ease of calculation and sensible naming conventions, but now I realize that Imperial has the ability to urinate on metric. Sold!

I also keep a 5# bag of marbles around (from local thrift, craft, or dollar stores) and drop them in to fill the "air space" in the jars.

I many have posted this to the other video, but I wipe the rims dry before putting the lid on and that makes a world of difference. If they still stick, usually after months of being closed, I just put them in front of a space heater, on their side with the lid facing the heater, for a few minutes and they loosen right up.
@IBuildItScrapBin

"Everyone's got shopping bags" I wish, since they made us pay for them (which I do think is a very good measure to reduce plastic garbage - I work in a store, I've seen bag consumption drop by 99%, maybe even more), we pretty much ran out a year later. We use them as trash bags in the smaller bins, like the one in the bathroom.

I normally use cling wrap / plastic wrap but I like this plastic bag idea more. I have way too many of them laying around anyway.
@mpikas
@mpikas 7 лет назад
I started doing the same a few years ago and stopped recently. I can't tell you how many things I found that have unexpectedly caused the bags to crumble (they don't melt/dissolve, it's like they turn into little flecks of plastic) completely ruining whatever I've managed to seal/keep from evaporating.

My grandmother used to use two layers of wax paper to, I thought, seal up the mason jars of sugary tea she would send out to the fields. I wonder if this was the reason, to prevent sticking. Anyway, for those people who cannot get shopping bags, maybe wax paper doubled over, will do the same trick.

All I got is you don't like the metric system. But isn't it easier to make calculations than with fractions?
@mpikas
@mpikas 7 лет назад
I use both, I tend to machine and woodwork in SAE (most good tools available in the US are SAE, well it's easier to get good ones for less), and I do some CAD work/3D printing in metric. I fail to see how metric is easier. You need half of 7/8"- just double the denominator, 7/16". If you'd rather work in decimal, well that works also (it drives me crazy when it's impossible to machine stuff using SAE, the math ends up the same, most machining measurements are done in decimal). Honestly, I find metric tedious. In SAE terms you think of things in units that are appropriate and relatable to what you're doing. In metric that goes away for units that are easily divisible by 10. It's easier to remember the system, harder to use. No unit is about the size of something relatable and standard, (my thumb width is about an inch, my foot is about a foot, my stride is about a yard...), I have to come up with something in my head that is about that size that I know the size of and compare it or if I can't (and in the US you rarely see the dimensions of things in metric), or worse I end up having to use the SAE approximation and then convert it. Metric makes sense to me when you're doing stuff on paper (or on a computer), and maybe in some cases slightly easier, but is almost worthless when doing things in the real world. I would rather deal with an 8' or 96" board then whatever the metric equivalent is (you either deal with a bigger number that has more digits to remember as you're walking over to a saw talking someone, or worse, too many decimal places to get an accurate cut...)
@dvillalba3d
@dvillalba3d 7 лет назад
I would argue that is cheaper, to build with paper than bricks. I like to make detailed plans before I set to build something, that way I have no mistakes, no discarded/wasted materials, no mental calculations to do while building. As for the very long decimals I just round them to the closest number. But I guess is just a matter of what you are used to work with...

Good tip but here in the UK they have banned free bags and the 5p ones are made out of biodegradable corn starch so they would be dust the next time you came to use them LOL
@barrygerbracht5077
@barrygerbracht5077 7 лет назад
I was just going to say that too. If you plan on the jar being sealed for any length of time, make sure you don't use biodegradable plastic bags. The lid might come off easy, but you might be dumping a bunch of plastic junk into whatever is in the jar.

lol, its not that bad. I think the law only applies to new plastic bags, and it only applies to stores; I don't know how the enforcement is done, probably a fine or something. The HDPE produce bags (and homedepot small parts/nuts/bolts bags) seem to be exempted.

It isn't about imperial being better than metric. It's about how snooty metric lovers are. They are kind of like vegetarians, if you don't agree with them you need to be burned at the "steak".
