With every new pokémon remake that comes out, my faith in gamefreak/pokémon company dies a bit more. Though I still enjoy the games and think they're not bad by any means, I still can't help but think they keep getting worse. Recently, I sat down to try and understand why exactly I think that, and finally found my answer. So I created this video, in the hopes to share it with you all and hear your own answers about this subject as well.

It’s not that BDSP intentionally removed features from Platinum, such as the back button on the PokeTech, it’s moreso the case that BDSP is LITERALLY using DP’s codebase. Through decomp attemps we’ve even found the code that controlled the GBA port on the DS still in the game and now there are teams trying to get that feature working again in BDSP to see what they can do with it
@ProAxeru
@ProAxeru 4 месяца назад
I think that's the reason they are soooo broken. DP were already broken, but BDSP are in another level, and I think it is because they copy and paste the DS code and translate it to the Switch the quickly they can

I think BDSP are bad remakes regardless, but the removal of the back button on the poketch is what pushed them over the edge of just being terrible. It's such an absurd decision that seems almost deliberately insulting to the playerbase.

When the Gen IV remakes came out, I jokingly said that each decision for the "remake" boiled down to 'Which decision is easier/cheaper to implement?". We get the fairy type because it makes it easier to use typing and move charts from newer games, but we get single use TMs again. We get a bicycle that can be ridden through grass but we lose pokemon contests and get a rhythm game somehow worse than friday night funkin instead. And I fear that's the direction the newer ones will continue to go - why spend time or money on a game when it'll sell millions and all you have to do is ask yourself "How cheap can we make this game and fans still buy it?"
@prezmer
@prezmer 9 месяцев назад
I never even looked at it from that perspective but you’re totally right about it being a possibility, even if you say it jokingly. The fairy type thing for example makes total sense! And I mean, sword and shield were proven to reuse 3ds animations so finding easy ways to do things is something we know is a concern… or so it seems anyway but I can’t really imagine the most profitable franchise in the world having a technical reason for choosing to reuse animations made for a less powerful console. It’s so weird because part of me feels like a proper tinfoil hat conspiracy theorist in thinking there’s a chance this IS actually laziness and lack of care for the franchise (I mean, they develop games for THE biggest franchise so how could it be?) but at the same time it’s tough to ignore the facts.

I think that there may be a shift coming. Just kinda seeing the amount of detail they put into sv dlc and the fact we still have no news on the next games is promising. One of the biggest setbacks of the recent years of games is just the amount of time they had to work on it. SWSH came out and immediately we had the SWSH DLC, BDSP, PLA, PMD Remake, and they were starting work on SV. Yes they weren’t working on each of these at the exact same time, but all those came out within a year or two outside of SV. We just got the second DLC after a year and it shows they had time to polish it. Compare that to the SWSH DLC where we already had the PMD and BDSP in the works, and then right after the SWSH DLC was done they were onto working on PLA. Granted only time will tell if this is actually going to break the cycle but I have hope for the next games/remake since we’re likely getting a new remake next.

Let's Go Pikachu/Eevee didn't just cut the Sevii Islands. There were no abilities, no evolutions for some Pokémon like Golbat, nothing past the original 151 (aside from Alolan Forms), and so on. Credit to Werster for explaining it in a video, but while the pokemon games "break sales records" it's still on a downward trajectory compared to other Nintendo franchises. The best selling Mario game ever is MK8:Deluxe on switch, for Zelda it's Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 3 for that series, Kirby and the Forgotten Land, Pikmin 4, etc. But for Pokemon, Red and Blue are still the best selling. It's the only main Nintendo series that hasn't hit peak sales on switch. That's not a good sign considering how massive the Switch player base is. They're definitely leaning more into merch than games now, and the horrible game quality isn't bringing in new players.

Imo, ORAS was fantastic - only things I would improve on it is raising the difficulty and having Gym Leader rematches, because those were gone for some reason. The way it reimagined the story and world in certain areas like acknowledging post-Gen 3 Pokémon and regions *BEFORE* the Elite Four is something I wish future remakes would do. Don't treat the world like the Pokémon and regions that were made after them don't exist.
@prezmer
@prezmer 8 месяцев назад
I agree, ORAS was great! All I'm saying is that, for all it did good, we started to see the trend of cutting content from previously established definitive versions (by cutting the battle frontier out, mainly, alongside the combined plotline emerald had with rayquaza stopping groudon and kyogre). And this trend only got worse with LGPE and ESPECIALLY BDSP. Again, it doesn't speak to the quality of the games, it's just... the main issue I see that keeps getting worse, and in BDSP's case, it absolutely harms the game beyond what any improvement could have saved. But I agree, the way ORAS reimagined the world and gave us many new things to play around with was fantastic! I just wish all of that didn't come at the cost of the battle frontier, especially. Gym leader rematches would also have been fantastic! My ideal remake of any game would do all of what you said, such as acknowledging the newer improvements and pokémon, adding them to the game, etc, AND not remove anything that people actually liked from previous iterations. But we seem to be getting farther and farther away from that. BDSP got no major improvements (ORAS level improvements) AND removed a ton of stuff, even the Pokétch back button. But here's to hoping gen 5 remakes get us back on a good track!

The ultimate issue is TPCI. Game Freak ultimately just makes the games while TPCI makes the deadlines. And really it is a great shield for TCPI to hide behind. They make all the important calls, the budget and the deadline, and Game Freak takes all the heat off them when the playerbase isn't happy with the final product. While Pokemon is the largest media franchise in the world, the games make up a surprisingly small chunk of it. Despite the games being the primary avenue of new species and variants to come into existence for TPCI to create merchandise of. So they ultimately do not care about the quality of the video games. They just want more species to make merchandise of. And since merchandise makes up the largest portion of their profits, TPCI demands quick turn-arounds for development time so they can create more merchandise. So I don't begrudge Game Freak. Are they a part of the problem? A bit given their shaky track record at times even when not under immense crunch. But TCPI are the true culprits of the franchise's downfall, wanting quantity over quality. I can pretty much guarantee you that Scarlet and Violet, as well as Sword and Shield, had incredibly rushed development cycles. Especially Sword and Shield, given that the team was most likely split in half between making them and Let's GO. Scarlet and Violet was also probably split between themselves and Legends: Arceus, which acted as a glorified tech demo. (Legends was still really good overall, though.) I have no clue what happened with BDSP, but I wouldn't be surprised if ILCA was given a year and a half at most to develop them. As an enfranchised player (Got in on the ground floor with Red/Blue), it does pain me to see that one of my favorite franchises is hurting as much as it is. But I'm not blind to where the fault truly lies. And the fault lies with TPCI and the drive of good, old capitalistic greed.

Thank you for the comment! I did gloss over the fact that merchandise makes up most of the revenue in Pokémon, so thanks for pointing that out. And while it does help cut gamefreak some slack, I’m not entirely certain they aren’t a big part of the problem still (would love to hear your thoughts on what I’m about to type as you seem pretty knowledgeable on the subject). As you said they do have a pretty shaky track record with their most recent example of a flop being little town hero. But my main issue is that Masuda has been quoted as saying that Pokémon is owned by 3 companies: Nintendo, Creatures Inc and… Gamefreak. Pokémon Company in the meanwhile was created by these 3 to ensure the success of the franchise after it took off in the early days, but doesn’t actually have ownership over it (though it might as well I guess, considering it WAS created by the folks behind the franchise). I guess it’s possible Gamefreak is always outvoted by the other 2 shareholders when deciding on the yearly release cycle but somehow I doubt they’re also unaffected by greed. And that’s also not to mention the baffling gameplay decisions that they often take, though we can’t know for sure how much those are affected by the rushed development and how much are just gamefreak not knowing what people want.

I honestly do not mind the lack of Rayquaza's involvement in the remakes. Rayquaza got the whole afterstory with the Delta episode to itself, something I loved then and still do today. And unlike Johto Hoenn is packed with a dense story, nice features and content I prefer over being in a second region that has nothing to offer but battle against people I don't care about. The lack of the Battle Frontier sucks, yeah, but at least we got a battle facility in which you can sink your time in. The battle resort was just some fun for me. Also the secret bases got expanded, contests looked better than at any other point in the franchise, and pretty much got some of the best content in the 6th Gen. Non of the Remakes were 1 to 1 since that would just be a Remaster. But honestly HG and SS added some of the least extra content. They kept the story of the original almost one to one, just adding Crystal's side story into a few random encounters. The addition of the new safari zone and the battle frontier from platinum was nice but that was literally it. People always say having Kanto as an addition makes them the best games in the franchise, while I couldn't care less about it.
@prezmer
@prezmer 8 месяцев назад
Those are very fair criticisms of Johto, as well as a fair defense of Hoenn. Honestly, I agree, what was added to ORAS was AWESOME. My issue isn't really the additions, but rather the fact that they came to replace some incredible features that had no reason for being cut. Sure the delta episode is amazing and perhaps better than Rayquaza's participation in the groudon/kyogre fight but... why not both, ya know? That's why I prefer HGSS: even though not much was added, they made an effort to bring everything from crystal and had no cut content aside from the odd egg, if I recall correctly. And while ORAS is still really solid, I really do believe it signaled the bad things to come with its resistance to add the emerald content. Here's to hoping we get remakes from now on that have all content AND a bunch of new ORAS style additions!

@@prezmer Why not both? Because it's a Ruby and Sapphire remake, not an Emerald one. Crystal's story is barely different from Gold and Silver's. Suicune appears in several places on the overworld, there is a single new character who shows up only a handful of times, and then a special encounter. It adds to the game, but changes nothing, and thus was simple to include while still being a remake of Gold and Silver. But Emerald makes major story changes, there's no way to include them while still keeping the games as Ruby and Sapphire remakes. Moreover, the Emerald story changes caused serious pacing issues. The gap between the number of leader encounters is huge. Groudon is awakened far too early, yet only starts causing problems conveniently after Kyogre is also awake, the atmospheric trek down to the bottom cave of origin with the earthquakes is replaced by two floors of mist and flying back and forth across the map, totally killing the tension. ORAS held true to Ruby and Sapphire while still acknowledging Emerald with the Delta Episode. We got the gen 3 equivalent of Mew being under the truck, and people whined about Rayquaza not showing up to fix things with a roar.

The problem with Modern Pokemon is a multifaceted issue with various factors. The increasing costs in game development is higher now. Developing on console involves more man power and time nowadays compared to how small scale the Gen 1-5 Era was. 3D models are difficult to work with compared to 2D sprites. Game development for big budget titles usually take around 3-5 years. Mainline Pokemon are now big budget console games. Pokemon as a franchise runs on a strict generation release timeline. Every 3 years a new mainline Pokemon game introduces a new generation, but this formula can only work for so long. With the cut pokedex in Gen 8 and the technical performance in Gen 9, we are starting to see the consequences of Pokemon games being rushed out for the lucrative holiday season. These games have become mandatory to fuel the other cogs in the Pokemon Franchise: the anime and the trading cards. Game Freak cuts corners on the game, which includes removing content, to meet strict deadlines. That's why the battle frontier got axed in Gen 6, the national pokedex slowly phased out in Gen 7, and the pokemon themselves in Gen 8. Them cutting corners is likely why voice acting will never be in mainline because it costs money and especially more time to hire, implement, and localize to account for a simultaneous worldwide release.

The lack of the Battle Frontier and no epic Rayquaza scene weren't ORAS's only failings. Emerald went out of its way to introduce new characters, rebalance levels/items/abilities, add on to the story, and update gym teams, but the remakes threw it all away to give us a story about a whiny, spoiled teenager with a savior complex stapled on to Ruby and Sapphire. Luckily they were able to hide it all by dangling Mega-Evolution in front of everyone's faces like a set of shiny keys with infants. Honestly, I don't think HGSS is completely innocent of this abandon-the improvements practice either. Pokemon Crystal gave us our first female playable character, expanded the types of Pokemon you could capture in Johto, and fixed a lot of the leveling disparity with in-game opponents. HGSS stepped back on all of that to just copy Gold and Silver. I still remember there being no shortage of Pokemon fans justifying it all when I complained about those things in HGSS and ORAS. It wasn't until BDSP that it started bothering the majority of the fanbase, so it finally got noticed. When I complained about the lack of Crystal and Emerald features in the remakes fans were immediately waving it off with: "It's a Gold/Silver, Ruby/Sapphire Remake, not a Crystal or Emerald Remake. LOL. Why are you so upset? Go cry about it!" It was utterly hilarious later how those same people were so absolutely offended when BDSP came out without Platinum features. I took pleasure in reminding them: "It's a Diamond/Pearl remake, not a Platinum Remake. LOL. Why are you so upset? Go cry about it!" I love Pokemon, but this Fandom is full of hypocrites. You either call out all the remakes for lacking the third game's improved features or you shut up when your favorite gets the inevitable same treatment of multiple cut features. The only difference with BDSP is that the Gen 4 games were a large chunk of the fandom's first game in the series so they had the loudest voices when their favorite didn't the gold star treatment. Frankly, I take pleasure in the fact that they got a taste of what they were dishing out to older fans. I say keep it up! Remake Gen 5 from the original Black and White with none of its sequel features and dumb down the story! Remake Gen 6 by cutting out Mega-Evolution entirely and removing customization! Fans will buy it anyway and still defend the stripped-down remakes. The reality is that these problems with the remakes were always there, they've just gotten fewer new features to hide those empty spaces behind with each new remake.

In regards to the final question - I think this is a symptom of a general trend of Gamefreak failing to give their teams enough time to make a good game. This yearly content cycle, plus the lean towards a more open world game means we are getting less time for a quality game to be made.

In my opinion, the only hope that can save remakes is if they continue to remake the third versions similar to what HGSS did and what LGPE tried to do. HGSS included various, although not all, Crystal elements, such as an in-game Celebi event, the Battle Frontier (replacing Crystal's Battle Tower), the Suicune side story, etc. so it was basically a Crystal remake painted as a Gold/Silver remake, which is what everyone expected from BDSP and is why those games are seen as being the worst remakes yet. ORAS can catch SOME criticism for doing the same but they still included several things you'd expect to see in an Emerald remake such as the Delta Episode, seeing Steven pass the torch to Wallace, etc. My only gripe with ORAS is really the lack of the Battle Frontier, other than that the game does everything I'd expect a Ruby/Sapphire with Emerald touches to do. LGPE is the literal remake of a third version, Yellow, except we didn't inherit all the modern mechanics we expect to by now, such as Abilities and Held Items, but I'm going to assume that was a one-time exception to simplify things for the Go crowd, training Pokemon with IVs and EVs also didn't work the same because they had the candy thing to work around as well, but the game was gorgeous, the gameplay was fun, it was basically a very early and primitive version of the Legends: Arceus catching mechanics, which should totally come back and be a permanent staple of the series. BDSP is just a downright atrocious game though, by far the worst remakes yet which is a shame because they did a lot right too, like giving the Pokemon League super strong teams, letting you get a glimpse of the Distortion World with the Shadow Giratina event, and so on, but the game is just hideous in the overworld in my opinion, the controls are clunky and certain tight areas of the game are a pain to navigate because of the clunky controls pushing you off ledges, the games are super buggy and once again, the lack of expected features was a turnoff. A lot of people expected Megas to come back for BDSP since we know other regions have Megas, Cynthia and Colress for example use Megas in the Alola games, and they stuck around when they made LGPE, so people at the very least expected remakes of older games to continue the trend of including Megas, so many were disappointed that they weren't included, at least in the postgame or something as a minor mechanic, like in the Alola games or in LGPE. Now Legends: Arceus on the other hand is much closer to being "the Platinum remake" than BDSP could ever hope to be. Yes it's not the same story or same region and characters etc. but the game itself is so much higher quality than BDSP, it feels good to play, the UI and controls don't feel clunky, everything feels super fluid and intuitive, in fact I think SV is mechanically a step backwards from LA, that's how much I love LA's mechanics. If we could have more games on that engine that'd be great. Would love to see a Crystal remake but in the style of LA, refined of course.

@@DecidiousGreens because ORAS and LGPE both had Megas. Even despite LGPE being pretty faithful to Gen 1 (no EVs, held items, abilities), they STILL included Megas. I feel as if the 'gen 5 has no third version so they can't cut much content from it, right?' is a bit of copium. Yeah, precisely on why remake a game if it’s not the definitive way to play it. There are exceptions throughout the gaming world sure, but usually that’s my view on it as well. I’ve seen some argue that it’s needed to bring beloved games to modern platforms (or in Pokémon’s case, newer generations), but… rereleases and remasters exist for that reason, no? That’s why I don’t really get it when people are excited about a 1 to 1 remake (as some were for BDSP). No game is perfect, so if you’re going to remake any, please take the opportunity to fix some of the flaws! But I gotta say having remakes bring BACK flaws that were already fixed for the sake of faithfulness shocked me. Pokémon innovating on one field at least! The target audience of the newer remakes isn’t fan’s who played the originals, it’s newer fans who didn’t. The first few remakes had to be enjoyable for people who’d played the originals because part of their purpose was to fill in the Pokédex, but that’s not an issue anymore. I never had a ds and missed gens 4 and 5 when they first came out. My main issue with the games is all of the stuff that is stuck behind post-game. They've become so focused on the competitive scene with these games that they practically force players to zoom through the game to unlock post-game content such as IV judges, certain battle items, and special training that players have no time to just sit & enjoy the worlds they've created…then the company get pissed that players are flying through content faster than they can make it. What they need to do is go back & give these games replay value. This way, players could build teams & drop them off in Pokémon HOME and feel free to restart their journey & try new things. I did that all of the time with the original 3 generations. I'd store my best Pokémon, start a fresh, & then send them back. Now, I just feel so rushed to finish the game because of the different level raids & Luxury Balls are only unlocked with game progression & I care more about catching new Pokémon & breeding them to 6 perfect IVs in Luxury Balls. It's ridiculous. I just want to explore the world of Pokémon, not get drip-fed content. Even in Sw/Sh, I could unlock BOTH DLC locations with only one badge & my Starter already up to Lv. 70+. Now, the second DLC for S/V is post-game only. 💢

The Zinnia defense of alternate dimensions is good and all, but it's so weird people use it to justify less content? Cause if I remember rightly Zinnia's specific example of alternate dimensions is to diagetically explain why ORAS Hoenn has megas and RSE Hoenn doesn't (and also to stop ORAS Steven from nuking RSE Hoenn with a meteor, but my point is the mega evolution bits). Anyways the whole "alternate dimensions don't have all this extra content that others do!" is, I suppose, a nice little explanation for some things (in this dimension, Super Contests are notably worse than the mainline dimension somehow), but like. You cannot tell me that no one has invented a down button on a watch in multiple timelines. The TM system in Scarlet and Violet is fine. TM's are single use, but they're also craftable, so they are infinite, even if there's only one available in the overworld, you gain the recipe and can then make theoretically infinite of that TM. It's a nice middle ground between single use consumables (which is just a bad game mechanic) and infinitely usable items that can break games; A good example being the headbutt TM in let's go, most pokemon can learn it, and you get flinch chance, letting you flinch hack your way through much of the early game. The craftable TM's mean that you still have to think about using them, because they're a limited resource, but it's not a final decision that can screw you over in the long run

This pushback of content and quality is also apparent when you look at the timeframes of release of the DLC in Gen 8 compared to gen 9. Since they can be directly compared due to being 2 part DLCs on the Switch. Summer of the year after release for Isle of Armor, followed by winter for Crown Tundra. Came out and never cleaned up the overall presentation of the game, but did alright. Gen 9 delays it's first part into the fall, the second part right before Christmas, and the story of it just didn't end well. We're getting a "free epilogue" which reads like they didn't finish their homework before turning it in. And I have no hope they won't immediately pretend it's no longer their problem when gen 5 remakes inevitablly get announced this year (and/or another Legends game) ScVi will not be fixed, anyone who thinks a patch is coming by this point is deluded.

The refusal to give Pokémon games the time they need to be fully developed and polished is so emblematic of the company’s unchecked capitalist greed. They should not be charging for post-game dlc expansions (expansions that should be free, not charged as two separate items) if they’re also gonna rush out the games to the point where they’re extremely buggy at launch-this a wider problem with the industry where games get patched and become reasonably stable only months later, but that’s not an excuse for The Pokémon Company. They’re gonna keep doing this until they reach a point where it actually affects their sales. Until then the people making the decisions are gonna keep doing what they’re doing and not caring about the games’ integrity.

I did enjoy Kierans story in the dlc and u would be lying if i said i didnt like the ai boss battle, the music for that was realy cool and the difficulty of it felt just right for me while all the gym leaders i just one shotted with my starter. My starter wasn't so overl eved that it would disobey me. but s/v and s/w were really boring to play through. Just wanted to get it over done with so i had everything unlocked to do the real fun things. Like doing six star raids for example. catching the legendaries, etc. im tired sorry for the spelling mistakes im talking about sword and shield and scarlet and violet here. If the next pokemon game isnt going to be good i wont buy it. i've reached my limit and i feel like the games are not worth the prices they are being sold for

i think remakes has gotten worse mostly cuz instead of improving the original they just desided to "keeping it faithful" when what i want is the 3rd version with the original story and some new and improved things added (along with features and pokemon added after the og) and also a (shorter) story after the main story (like the delta episode) what we get now is 1 medium size change and the og games with diffrent (but not really better) grafics

Don’t forget the massive difficulty spike put into BDSP. It’s the exact same as Diamond and Pearl with the EXP share, but when you get to the elite four they suddenly have competitive IVs and moves. I had a friend who needed to grind to level 80 to win because he just couldn’t break through Cynthia’s team. On top of all the moves that got cut. But my biggest issue is all the content that got teased and was never implemented. We will never know what happened to third cannon Type:Null or what aether was doing in Sinnoh.

End game content should be harder. You beat the main story it makes sense that what comes after should be harder than that. It's challenging and doesn't make the games piss easy to bash your way through. Also you don't need high lvl pokemon to win your battles. You can use strategies like F.E.A.R and thats usually a lvl one pokemon. The pokemon games difficulty is a joke most of the time. Your friend had to work hard and earn it, did they not feel accomplished and really happy when they finally beat it? that's a fun experience for some players to feel. That's something kids these days don't know how to do and just like having things handed to them. I'm not calling your friend a kid, i am just giving an example. I am starting to loose interest in pokemon and this is one of the reasons. It's too easy... at the same time i wish i could be a kid again or erase my memory so i could loose my knowledge of the game and experience it all new again... knowing type matchups for example is a big game changer and the games are made for kids, gamefreak/pokemon company have made it abundantly clear that they will always cater towards the kids only and not the people who grew up with it like digimon has. Maybe i've just grown up.

@@whitedragonzerureusu4480 I agree that Pokémon end games should be harder, but that shouldn’t mean the player with little to no knowledge gets blindsided by a massive difficulty spike. Yes you can use stuff like FEAR, but the only way to get it is to either talk to one random NPC 3 days in a row with a Pokémon of a level ranging from 1-100 OR through the battle tower in post game. While this game does better than most in telling you if you EVs are maxed, it doesn’t tell you anything about Natures or IVs which lead to my friend carrying around a modest Rapidash and Staraptor. On top of this he hated the games afterwards as the only way he understood to get over the difficulty hurtle was to grind 3-5 levels then try again. On top of this the game doesn’t tell you how to get EVs at all making it hard for new people to even fully realize they exist. I’m not saying the games should stay as easy as they are. They absolutely should be harder, especially after they decided the EXP share can’t be turned off anymore, but there are ways to do that without adding a hard mode and without blindsiding new players. If they fought the hidden mechanics of the game to new players and gave stuff like bottle caps out at certain points during the story they would be able to make the games harder and give new players tools to deal with them. My complaint is not that Pokémon games should be easy, just that they shouldn’t have a the game go from “beatable by babies” to “very hard” just for the 4 fights in the game.

I'll be honest. I don't even think you can consider the underground expanded on. They took away every feature that made the underground interesting in diamond and pearl by cutting the amount of base decorations down to mere statues, there's not any traps to discover and use to keep people from entering your base to steal your flag for their base, the addition of pokemon to catch in the underground was nice but removing all the things from the original underground in place of that wasn't worth it. On the context of the games getting worse I'd like to bring up the dlc for scarlet and violet. I feel like we could have cut the terapagos stuff from the dlc and make that base game. Arven in the post game talks about the weird page in the book about the disk Heath saw in area zero. Why not have the player Arven, Nemona, and Penny get authorized to go down into area zero in search of Terapagos in the main game instead of tying it to Kairan's story where it feels out of place. The dlc was called the hidden treasure of area zero but neither dlc feels like connected to paldea let alone the region the dlc was named after.

Watching this i feel like Millennials are having a hard time coping that they are not the target market of Pokemon games anymore. I think it’s a mistake but I think that is a major problem. Gen Z doesn’t have the same habits nor Gen Alpha. I think Pokemon will actually lose favor in the long run. Kind of like how Gen Z has zero commitment to marvel. But Diamond was my first game and the remakes upset me a lot. I loved platinum and wanted to see the Distortion World realized on better hardware. Plus so many things I loved in even just Diamond is gone, such as the depth in the contests, or decorating my underground base with bunneary plushes. Yeah, I think one RU-vidr put it best with her retrospective of pokemon; The executives want their money now. Scarlet and Violet are the conflict between the developers and the executives made manifest; the game would be fantastic but it was rushed beyond belief. Work was made with the stories and characters but the gameplay is the most atrocious. It’s the game that crashed on me the most. And there’s one other problem; the executives are lazy and know that, like with Dexit, people will buy regardless. Not to mention, when Dexit first happened, whilst many objected, there was the “pro Dexit” side that kind of forgot you could transfer pokemon in the other games. Almost like they wanted the “anti-Dexit” players to be grateful that they even got a game. And Black and White’s remakes will probably be these problems coming to roost in one particular way; in black and white, you can’t use any non gen 5 pokemon until after the main story. That’s why Black and white had so many new pokemon that were essentially recycled favourites; to provide variety that the company intentionally stripped. So just imagine what happens if they do a “faithful” remake. HgSS was fantastic but they needed the safari zone because a lot of great gen 2 pokemon were locked into the Kanto post game. That sucked because, whilst some may argue that they’re like little trophies, it meant that you couldn’t use them in the main story or much else. That’s why, for all its faults, I really did like Scarlet and Violet for how many pokemon you could get so early. The moment three star raids became possible, I got that Frigibax and had a blast using it. Sucks really. But we’re going to keep buying it.
@prezmer
@prezmer 5 месяцев назад
I wonder if we'd actually get good games if they were given more time. It's gotten to the point I genuinely can't tell because all we get is rushed games. And for everything they get right, they screw it up again later while fixing something else. SV for example had decent story... MASSIVE difference from gen 8 which had more or less NO story. Plus, game freak's other endeavors, which I assume are given more dev time, are all flops, the latest being little town hero. So I really don't know if their only issue is the time pressure, and we're unlikely to ever find out because production schedule is not about to slow down. As you said, money ends up being valued above all else. And as you also said, we'll all keep buying whatever they shit out because the core gameplay can't ever be unfun. It just sucks that everything else is often subpar at best nowadays.
@christopherbennett5858
@christopherbennett5858 5 месяцев назад
@@prezmer Yeah, brand loyalty doesn’t help either. Now, game freak has always had performance issues but I feel like, as the fanbase has older, more vocal people, we’re seeing more egregious examples. It’s like if you only read one book and then read a bunch more so you’re more savvy to whether or not something is interesting writing or an offensive trope; you just pick up on things more. And what frustrates me about Scarlet and Violet the most is that there’s an inherently good game in there but corporate greed and the borderline addiction for content regardless of quality is why the executives won’t be persuaded to change. What would be needed would be a sudden plummet in sales to indicate that the current business model isn’t working. However, I don’t think we will see that anytime soon. That being said, I am happy when people find enjoyment in these game and the franchise. The animated stuff this year has been a great reflection of that as well. Which does frustrate me that, even nowadays when voice acting is becoming more of a thing, the franchise still does silent protagonists in more dialogue clogged stories. Maybe that’s why the lowkey nature of SV isn’t as grating as something like Sun and Moon where the real character is Lillie and you’re practically a shadow seeing the domestic abuse with a very blank stare.

i still do not understand why they did not add the Battle Frontier as DLC in ORAS a year later or sth. I am no DLC simp but the argument "I will not add it because noone would play it so it's a waste of time lmao" just didn't exist in 2005? At least we would have had a definitive pokemon gen 3 experience even if we would have to pay a bit extra. Besides, with online play competitive strats and IV breeding was significantly easier to do than back in 2005, let alone the vast amount of online guides to help. I grew up with ORAS and RSE and the fact that we actually got to go to space was a wave to the old fans with all the myths about space back in the day. A DLC with features for the "hardcore" fans just seems like a good option imo. Maybe some ROM hacking chads will fill the void on day.

The problem with the Bd/Sp remakes is simple. They are were not remakes, they are reboots. A proper remake is something along the lines of R/B/Y to Fr/Lg. They got all new mechanics from the most recent game along with their available Mons, added abilities, and the new personality system from Ruby/Saphire/Emerald. Bd/Sp kept everything the same as the original other than the grand underground. It should've been called a remaster, but honestly the original had better looking graphics.
@zenvariety9383
@zenvariety9383 4 месяца назад
BD/SP are remasters though. Remasters add very little to the original game except maybe a few extras here and there. Super Mario RPG is a remaster of a classic game. Remasters add very little and don't change the story. Remakes can add changes to the story. Reboots change the entire story with a new story instead.

I Disagree with your take on ORAS. It's a parallel timeline of R/S, not emerald, it's a retelling of those games. There were 3 parallel time lines, R/S/E, the remakes focused on 2 of them. If the game was Delta Emerald then that's different, but it wasn't. The rayquaza cut scene stopping the box legends wouldn't make sense in a R/S remake, as only one is revived not both, rayquaza only comes out to stop Groundon and Kyogre fighting, not just if one is moving around. Adding onto this, is how rayquaza actually got its own storyline which ties into the main story and the gimmick of the Gen. The Battle Tower isn't missing but is just the battle maison, which is basically the same thing, just a smaller building. If you wanted the Battle frontier, then i understand your disappointment but once again it's a retelling of R/S not Emerald.
@prezmer
@prezmer 6 месяцев назад
Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I fully understand that the reason why none of the things I mentioned are in the game is because they're retellings of R/S. What I don't understand is why they chose to retell the inferior, at least in my opinion, versions of the region. Emerald had so many additions that were flat out ignored because of this decision which is potentially made to just earn more money from selling two versions instead of one. It's one of the same issues I had with BDSP: why not remake platinum instead? That's the main issue for me, and from what I found, lots of players too. Doesn't ruin the games though, like I said, ORAS is still really cool. I just think it'd potentially be the best remakes in the series if they just added all they did to emerald instead of RS. Hope that explains my stance a bit!

As someone who grew up with Pokémon Emerald, I'm gonna be frank. The Battle Frontier was overrated, I spent more time watching Sudowoodo dance and catching Smeagles in Artisan Cave than replaying the actual attractions at the frontier. The Seviper tent, the tower, etc. All of them were finished in mere hours, then I went back to rematch the gyms and other trainers over and over instead. In my opinion, the only issues I had with Omega Ruby were that. A. It was too easy B. Zinnia needed more screen time. The manga gives Zinnia an amazing story (featuring gore) but the game gives her so much less, then just does away with her. But it was a huge step up over the rest before it, and to an extent, those thereafter.
