I have the need to have something playing while I fall asleep and unfortunately, regular white noise doesn't work for me. But this at a reduced volume? Works wonders. Then again, I love this series anyways and watch it for real about once every 3-9 months soooo.
It's honestly gratifying to know that I'm not the only weird nerd who binge watches all of Citation Needed and Two of These People Are Lying in order every few months.
With a heavy heart, I must report that Larry the Lobster is in very poor condition and will be torn down if the owners can't pay tens of thousand of dollars for repair. May he rest in peace.
I would bet that Australian councilmen are cut from the same cloth as British ones and the only difference is flavor. This is speaking as a Yank, mind you.

so many things are hilarious in this episode but the most underrated one is the physical real life version of the looney tunes run past something then to a neck snapping 180 when Tom reads "at a drive through pie shop. *visible snap back to laptop screen* DRIVE THROUGH PIE SHOP?!?!?"
I rewatch these every few months to a year and “LOBBO!” is still one of my favourite jokes in the series. Hopefully you lot can get together again soon
I don't think Chris Joel, Matt Grey, Tom Scot, and Gary Brannon were alive back then... ... But if they WERE, and they WERE part of the criminal shippers brigade (or whatever it was called), it'd make a pretty great TV show.
Just for everyone’s information, there is a group of people who are trying to make a giant immortal lobster god to worship. Because lobsters are already immortal and grow forever, they just get too big to shed their shells properly and die. - by helping it shed, they allow it to continue to grow.

Sadly not all that many people knew much or anything at all about folklore when I visited Scotland*, though it got better the farther north I travelled. I had a very interesting conversation with a guy working in a museum in Kirkwall. * To be fair, that seems to be the case in most countries I have been to, and not all of them have a reason like "the church deliberately tried to get rid of it 200 years ago".
@@CourtOfWinter Yay! Kirlia and that line are far and away my favourite pokemon, I do appreciate that. That's sadly not uncommon; there are sources if you know where to find them, but the tradition is kept better-alive up in the highlands, islands and in Ireland of course. Down on the lowlands we have too much iron... we didn't have to remember. ;) Some of us do enjoy it though! Whereabouts did you visit?
As an Australian, I gotta say its nice to know our stereotypes hold up overseas. Your were pretty much on the money for most jokes, and really Aussies enjoy laughing at themselves as much as anyone else - no need to apologize. I'm a recent follower to the Technical difficulties after discovering Tom Scott for his "things you might not know" videos, and I have to say as much as I enjoy learning something from those videos, I quite like the random humour Citation Needed provides, and this episode is now my favourite. I actually had to go back and replay parts because I couldn't hear it over my laughter!
Drinking game: Every time Gary says "Let's face it." If anyone else says it you have to down all the booze in an entire off-licence, but don't worry about that; they never do. Also, take a sip whenever any of them says "You're absolutely right." or hits themselves; two if it's Tom.
Clearly a butler's alert sound would be the "Ahem." of a cleared throat. (Why has it taken me so long to find this, I can't remember the last time I laughed so much in 5 minutes) From Pete Brown's Three Sheets To The Wind: "beer drinking is so intrinsically tied to Australian culture that the way they deal with situations where sobriety is required is by drinking low alcohol beer."
It's okay, as an Aussie I still love you. Our convict status just means we have inherited the knowledge of how to murder people and other various crimes.
I used to live in Louisiana, and I must say I was always a bit baffled by the logic behind the idea of the drive-through daiquiri establishment, in a place where drinking while driving was just as illegal as anywhere else. Not too baffled to prevent my ever patronizing said establishments, but baffled nonetheless. A similar concept I found much easier to get behind, however, was that of the daiquiri kiosk in the local shopping mall. Interestingly enough, it was the one time in my life I found myself more than happy to grant a girlfriend's request to tag along as she went shopping... "Oh, never mind me, love; take all the time you need . . . I'll just be over here by the, um, food court..."
Whenever I come back to binge watch this I am always in awe of the Lovecraftian nightmare that is the camera jig and arms set up. I know it works but its so jarring compared to where this show goes.
I like to say that this podcast is one of my favorites of all time. I’ve watched every single episode twice and I’m on my third rewatch. I hope more people get to watch this in the future and that Tom actually brings this series back.
Until last year, I lived in Texas my whole life. When on road trips between Houston and San Antonio or Austin, I'd sometimes stop in Schulenburg for kolaches (it's A Thing in central Texas). Until a few years ago, there was a place near one of the bakeries I sometimes went to called "Double Shot Liquor And Guns". And yes, it was a drive-thru. Sometimes my beloved home state actually does deserve the stereotypes. *sigh*
A few years too late for this to get anywhere, but I'm not far from the Big Lobster. If we can organise a cardboard cutout of the TechDifs ill get some snaps of them at the Big Lobster.
6 years late here, but the best part about the "One Slab Per Person" rule at Bathurst is that people were actually breaking into the campgrounds in the weeks leading up to the event and Burying beer so they could circumvent the rule and get sloshed for a cheaper price than paying for beers at the bar.
Watching this series at 2x speed is a whole other experience; would recommend if you've already watched/listened to the whole series like 4 times already.
Well this is what I came for, loved the audio version and this version is even better. So glad it hasn't been killed off and look forward to the future 1x02 and beyond!
it's neat to listen to these on loop right now, since season 7 ends with an episode talking about chickens, then it's back here to the poultry and fish farm.

There is a strawberry farm around 15-20 minutes away that has a, probably, 3-4 metre tall strawberry, that got stolen once, that was cause for laughs and annoyance in the local area.

Having booze at a petrol station isn't actually that unusual. It's pretty much the norm here in Germany. The reason for that is quite simple: petrol stations are rarely closed, as opposed to normal stores. The price is appropriately high, but if you're partying, it's 3 AM and you're out of beer, having a petrol station nearby is extremely useful.
Been to the Big Lobster.... Yep. It's big. Also the Big Pineapple, the Big Orange, the Big Ram, the Big Crayfish (not lobster, it's different) People started burying extra slabs of beer at their Bathurst campsites weeks before the race.... nah, we're not alcoholics. :)
I live in Victoria. We've got the Giant Worm. You're able to walk through it and learn about (real) giant worms. When you first said Big Lobster my first thought was Big Prawn. Which until recently was looking a little sad because the site it was on hadn't been occupied in a while. The Big Uluru isn't all that amazing, although it has recently been repainted, it's also a petrol station. Your accents were fine, I've heard much, much worse attempts at Australian accents than yours. I thought this was hilarious, so no offense, it takes a lot to offend an Aussie.
I'm sad. They make so many references throughout this series that go straight over my head Edit: actually I'm using headphones, so I guess they go through my head?
