I've updated to Luminar 4, and I love it. I'm one of those people who wants my photo editing to be as simple as possible. I take a lot of photos, and I just don't have the time or patience to edit those photos.
@@MaxRovensky I made a video of my first impressions of Luminar 4, as a Luminar 3 owner. It was the first time I'd used it, and it shows 😝One thing I couldn't find was the add filter option in Luminar 4. Hopefully, that's not one of the choices they've removed. I have to admit that I love the sky changing feature. It would be nice it would show in the water reflection. Oh, well, maybe in a future update.
My Bonzer Channel I tried L4 trial and the first thing I encountered is that even though it shows my L3 presets, literally ONE of them looked the same, which is a single-adjustment utility preset Anything creative that has to do with colors is straight up invalid in L4. They didn't even try with backwards compatibility
My Bonzer Channel it works well in terms of their new direction of a "simplified tool". I just don't agree it should've been simplified And the saddest thing about the effect stack assassination is that they did it in the name of performance, but the new thing is bloody slower 😑
I downloaded Luminar 4 trial edition. Tried to export single, low-pixel photos and wasted literally hours, with nothing to show for it. My computer specs are not an issue here. - Why would I pay for a non-functional software? Also, any negative feedback seems to be immediately shut down by the company by closing threads with open-ended responses. Most of that feedback seems be over export issues.
I too am absolutely LOVING Luminar 4. It took me, oh, 2 DAYS to get used to it. It has become my main workhorse editor. This vid is just, well, NONSENSE. I can do anything I want in Luminar 4 and just love it. It is doing portraits so wonderfully. YOUR LOSS if you don't upgrade. I am also using Windows and having ZERO problems. This software is doing EVERYTHING they say it does and I have been wonderfully surprised.

Apreciate the honest opinion and insight to how luminar might do things under the hood, I tried it out it has a couple of nice and quick dirty edit tools like a Snapseed has on my iPhone so I agree with you here. Greetings from a fellow software engineer and hobby photographer.
I do understand you point unlike most of people who disliked your video. L4 is quite limited with options now, everything is more automated. Sky replacement works sometimes fine(even perfect) , but often gives more headaches. Does it speed up editing proces for mostly non professional use, definitely yes. It is fun to use , but at the same time you limit yourself from not learning far advanced software solutions like Photoshop(my case). Anyway it is just a tool and we should decide what works the best for us. On your remark that is not professional tool, I will agree even now it doesn't support raw files from Z6, Z7 and Z50 (it opens as jpeg). I know there is a workaround, but serious companies add support within months after release of new cameras.
My point was never "it's a bad tool for everyone, I'm the objective truth bringer, period" My point was "in my opinion, it's an inferior tool to its predecessor for the following reasons" There's a tool for everything. I sometimes edit things in Photos.app because it's fast and does the job at the time 🤷🏻♂️ The video was made from the perspective of someone who *loves* Luminar 3
This is worrying if true. Having pre purchased I will try it out. Do you think they 3 and 4) will be able to share the library and adjustments etc so you can use both?
John Tweddell they said there will be a "compatibility mode" in L4 for L3 presets but when L5 rolls around those presets will stop working Compatibility mode doesn't really mean much though since pretty much all the time when something is labeled as "legacy", the developer stops caring about it
Bikers of Texas like I told other commenters - nothing is wrong with liking L4 😌 My issue is mainly with the direction Luminar is taking (more so even the reasons behind it) and the fact that Skylum is being disingenuous about it
Already bought it. I use Luminar 3 currently, which does a good job, and I will install Luminar 4 to see how it works. If it sucks, then, I will continue to use 3, solely.
Eureka!!! Now maybe I understand why there's some strange things with this (or I simply am not locating the feature(s)). Luminar 4 can handle CR3's but Aurora doesn't seem to be able to, say what?? Masking seems limited in Aurora, perhaps I am just not finding it? Can you make a simple polygon mask? Why would I want to use a paintbrush to mask off a window? I hope this is operator error on my part..... I cannot find any way of importing the actual lens profile for distortion and vignetting. If I'm missing something someone feel free to speak up.
I appreciate the alternative perspective you're bringing to this. It's reaching the point where all the one-click enhancement photo filters, etc. are beginning to look obvious and repetitive, not original. Maybe I'm just old school, but something bugs me about presenting photography which is made up of formulaic, artificial imagery, and passing it off as your own work. The problem is, it never looks as good as carefully crafted photography... it looks generic. I'm interested in LR alternatives, I think I'll rule this one out.
The ai filters imo should never be used more than 25-50% and only as a starting point. This is a very deep tool to use if you don’t wimpier and really use it.
I understand your reasoning for not wanting to upgrade to L4, but that is personal to you and I dont think you should be suggesting that other potential users should not upgrade or at least try the product. My perspective is different to yours. I like L4 because it achieves 2 major objectives for me as a photography hobbyist. It does simplify my post processing and allows me to be creative and try new things without having to become an expert in photoshop, which I do not have the time or inclination to do. It also moves me away from the ridiculous pricing structure that Adobe have created. This software does all that I need it to do and will hopefully serve me well for years to come without the need to spend a fortune. I will admit that I am undecided about sky replacement. The feature is fantastic, but I think I will be using my own skies rather than stock skies so that, at least, I can say say that a finished image is all my own work. I like you, have been using L4 for a few weeks now, and whilst it is not without its faults and glitches, for me at least, it is a far better option than Adobe anything or L3 which I found to be very slow and glitchy!
I'm bringing up a problem with future direction, such as Skylum's admitted lack of backwards compatibility in versions after L4 and overall path of re-selling Apple's work (which results in them replying to support requests and bug reports with "This will be fixed in the future, but we 🤷🏻♂️when exactly") It's your decision whether or not to use the tool, I'm just here to lay some facts to help with thinking 🙈
As someone relatively.new to photography and image editing this tool is amazing as an add in and simplifies a lot of the work flow. I find it sad that because you don't like the changes you are trying to put other potential customers off. Also the comments about Apple, it works well in windows and a lot of the face recognition and AI is multi platform based not just apple as you have stated. I think with the option of the pro settings you get L3 and more, maybe with your.mschine updated it may be quicker the program is slick and speedy for me, literally second to perform any task
I am having a lot of issues with installing Luminar 4 for my ACER Z3-715 desktop. I have Windows 10 Pro. It wont simply launch. It will load and then nothing will pop up.
Would you be able to explain what the triangle with an exclamation mark in Luminar 4 means. Nearly all the my pictures have a grey triangle with a grey exclamation mark and I can't delete or export them.
I stuck with Luminar 2018 due to not liking Luninar 3's library. I opine Luminar 4 is brilliant compared with 3, having both 1 item changes and choice of folders for libraries; it has amazing AI and watching the Masters including Jim Nix and Anthony Morganti explain, I am thoroughly enjoying it. It is very fast even with several layers, though it probably needs a good fast PC, as on one at least a commentator reported it slow. I use turbo boost and set my GPU RAM to graphics card only. Most seem to find 16gb CPU RAM works well. In my opinion watching tuition videos helps before experimenting.
JB I did some non-scientific benchmarks and in my tests Luminar 4 performs very noticeably slower than Luminar 3, which is a shame cause they killed the stack in the name of "performance"

I totally agree with you in the use of the term AI. It's actually ML - Machine Learning and lots of software has it readily available like ElasticSearch etc.
The only downside of Luminar 4 is the speed of the program. For the rest, luminar is more than ok. Everything better than paying money every month to adobe. The Luminar interface is also much better and simpler than Adobe Photoshop. So you say that the luminar interface is too simple and draws too much on an ipad program. Well that they bring it very quickly in the app store to also use it on the ipad, that would be very good.
Theo GT the fact that L4 is slow as hell is even more of a gut punch to me because they made the app less capable (read "worse") than version 3 "to improve performance" They botched it hard I'm still using L3 and I love it, but L4 I just can't recommend in good consciousness to anyone
Sorry, but I have a different opinion. For me, I like it better than Lightroom or Capture One because I like fast and easy easy while you can still easily moderate the effects to your taste. Your are right about the misuse of AI terminology by Luminar. Glad you called them on that.
Overall I agree except luminar 3 was completely broken after the last update and I have to change because not even a clean reinstall brought it back to a decent stability. Luminar 3 was also painfully slow, to the point that I questioned it's validity as a professional software. The whole coding was amateurish at best and it's stability on windows terrible. I switched to Luminar 4 and used it a bit except in the recent patch it broke all my catalogues and had to delete it creating a new one. This already happened to me with Luminar 3. On Mac (I use both OS) is slightly more stable but I wouldn't touch it with a 3 feet pole if I had to rely on it for my daily work flow, especially because it is a resource hog compared to Lightroom or even Darktable despite being noticeably slower. I will not upgrade any further even with the next patches for fear of having my set up bricked AGAIN! Skylum team reacts pretty quickly when I asked for help and somehow managed to bring the F***ed up installation somehow "working" again but it never got back to be "reliable". The BIG problem with Skylum is that they wont allow you to reinstall an older version of their software and even downloading the full install program form their site will keep giving you the last (broken) patch... Still looking for a viable Lightroom substitute which does not include a rental licence.
Yeah, the slowness is a real issue but the thing is, they slashed so many features from L4 in the name of performance increase, and the damn thing is EVEN SLOWER than L3 Windows version was always crap cause they couldn't use Apple's tech under the hood front But yeah, sadly there's still no real alternative to Lightroom One of these days I'm gonna lose it and write a proper photo editing app...
@@MaxRovensky I'm trying ON1 right now: it is a certainly more refined and faster software then Luminar4 bur still lacks control over "hue" which is important to me. After the end of the trial I'll try exposure too. Since I ordered a Fuji X100V I may also try capture one, but I fear it is a bit too much for me... I hope I'm not forced back to ligtroom
I'm on Windows 10 and quite happy with Luminar 4 as a plug-in to ON1 Photo RAW 2022 and Affinity Photo. I tried both Luminar AI and Neo and swiftly returned to 4 since many of the new features are buggy and quite a number of essential features from 4 are now missing, e. g. catalogues, layers and more. What I seriously despise about Skylum is that they're a lying bunch: They promise you to fix the glitches and provide the missing features from the previous version after the launch of the new software, but they never do, instead they dump the software and launch another new version for which they kindly ask you to pay up again. That isn't the way trustworthy people do business, and I'm not going to support such a business attitude with my money.
AI and Neo are literally the same software they're re-selling. They shipped zero new features, just something vaguely referred to as "new engine" which means nothing on it's own
I've been a long time Luminar user and L4 is such a disappointment. None of my presets look remotely the same and I have to been unable to recreate them. The new interface is so cluttered and more cumbersome. I really hope they revert back to the workspace interface. It's vastly better.
“Looks like an iPad app” - subjective? I think you’re too generous. It looks like an online Macromedia Flash player interface. Something was bugging me about Luminar 4, and now I know what it is. I still think it’s a great product for the price for a simple solution, although I’m going to be annoyed that almost everyone has the same sky.
Ariel Glaze Sky replacement only really works on wide landscapes. If you have any depth of field at all, it looks unnatural even with all the cover-up features
From the video I watched it looks like you can use your own sky images. I agree with you to some degree but I would just use my own so they don't look like everyone else's. problem Solved
It's a shame you have issues with Luminar 4. I have a hobby in photography and using Aurora HDR and Luminar with my drone. I'm very happy with my beta copy of Luminar 4 and have posted some photos I processed with the software onto my Google Drive account at drive.google.com/open?id=1d8aOlOpMwN-rjIzu2SMtbHCqffXBnmGv For me using a 2015 MacBook Pro, the software is just as fast as other editing apps out there but I really like the Luminar one the most. Some of the photos I used AI sky replacement and others I just used the other AI tools the software has. Most of the photos are of my family and I.
I use Luminar 4 and absolutely love it!!! I am a windows user, not Mac, and don't know if that presents any problems you might have with Mac. By you saying Luminar 4 is garbage and don't buy it, that is your opinion only, that doesn't mean that the rest of us don't love it. If you like Luminar 3 so much, stay with it. I have no problem with you personally feeling 4 might be garbage to you but when you tell others not to get it without them even trying it themselves, I don't feel that is right. Some people might say Luminar 3 is garbage, after using 4, and they say don't use it? For me, I have yet to come across any program that does everything exactly the way I would like. Some are closer than others but not 100%. I know several people that like only older versions of Photoshop and trash on newer versions because Adobe made some changes and they have never given themselves a chance to learn a new way of doing things. That goes on with many other programs as well. We all need to adjust to the new, some of it being better and some being worse. You get used to doing things one way and when changes come along, they might not be the way I would want it. IMO, I have had new versions of programs, and websites, that I totally disliked at first but gave them a chance eventually with those dislikes going away and leading into likes after all.
So the complaint is that they incorporated technology developed by other people and figured out a way to make it work together intuitively and sold it as an easy to use effective software for far less than the cost of lightroom? Or is the complaint that they used some marketing buzzwords?
And the fact that they call built in system tech their own revolutionary achievements (which are neither achievements, nor revolutionary, nor their own) I touch a bit on this topic in a followup video in the pinned comment
@@MaxRovensky I haven't heard any complaints from people that actually downloaded the software. It seems to have all the same features plus some new ones and laid out in a better, more intuitive format.
I understand that it's subjective, but the new UI is anything but intuitive. For example adding more effects and at the same time removing search sounds like a very backwards UX decision
I am one of the Skylum customers that have had their money stolen by Skylum refusing to update Luminar 3 for Big Sur. If I wish to keep Luminar 3 working properly, I am forced to not update my Mac operating system. It would be foolish to purchase future copied of Skylum software, only to have it unsupported.
They explicitly told me they have no intention of supporting L3. And L4 support will be dropped in like a year or so after the next thing came out. And I'm sure it'll happen to the next thing as well.
All good points but the market is never going to integrate open source tools into a nice packaged interface on their own. As for unlimited effect stacking, not everyone will apply multiple effects unless you are Dmitri Usanin. Lastly, Self-Learning and Adaptive ML is a subset of AI.
Toshi Tazawa there's no self learning in Luminar. ML application is limited to segmentation and the actual processing is done via pre-baked algorithms as stated by Skylum CTO in a Habr.com interview I know what AI/ML is, my point it it's used for deceptive marketing
i absolutely love luminar 4. i hate the fact that adobe sucks people money every month while skylum gives everything close to them for one time purchase. no one literally cares about the photos we take. only a fraction of world respects and buys them. why whould you invest so heavily on those fraction?.
Except they charge you full amount for upgrade cycle. Luminar AI is coming and Skylum will charge you more for it than for L4 and they told me explicitly it will take away advanced editing. They'll charge you more money for less features on the next update cycle and L4 will stop being supported a year after Luminar AI releases.
This software is a performance disaster, completely unusable if you need to work on more than a handful of images. I can't imagine any professional photographer using this as a viable alternative for processing RAW files from a full session or a wedding.
I would rather pay the money to buy the product than making it myself. I really don't understand the point if this video. It works with windows and mac and u say it's a apple AI system I mean ?

Lame thinking. I dropped adobe and moved up from 3 to 18 to 4. It can be simple but it is, if you have a brain, very deep. Also ai is a play on words for the public. Btw if you can not see your adjustment as you make them get glasses.
