Tbh I don't think companies are searching for talented trainees anymore. They want visuals, stage presence and people that can stand out to others and attract attention. For vocal, singing and dancing companies can teach that.

THANK YOU!!! Someone finally said it! SM doesn’t know how to market to save their lives! Red Velvet would have been a much bigger group by now if SM did their job! And EXO probably would be able to compete with BTS if SM knew how to handle their idol’s comebacks. Since they suck, Red Velvet gets outshone by Blackpink and Twice (and is starting to get outshone by Itzy too). So yeah, just from being in the big three doesn’t guarantee success. But it definitely gives you a leg up in the beginning.

I don't see this mentioned as much but one other privilege of being in the Big 3 is advertising/ambassador deals. Being a Big 3 idol means you can become brand ambassadors for bigger brands more easily than a group from a small one. And it's probably easier to get positions like MCs, I think yo'd rarely see a rookie idol from a small group MCing for a music show, they'd have to have some success first but Big3 idols are more likely to MC as rookies. I could be wrong about that though but I did think that when Sungchan was made Inkigayo MC. And yes SM stans like claiming everyone hated every SM group and called them flops at first but people actually had to know these groups existed to claim they're flops unlike smaller groups who do flop and no one mentions it because no one knows they even existed. And even if not all SM groups were sweeping award shows left and right as rookies, they usually break quite a few records that people conveniently don't mention. The annoying thing about big 3 privilege deniers is the that the instant you speak about it, they will claim you're one of the people who try to nullify the group's success when you're not. You're just trying to point out it's okay to accept the privilege exists.
@xyzz2540
@xyzz2540 2 года назад
I do agree they get a good head start but there is competition to get in. Ppl conveniently forget that. Even the visuals are able to keep up the performance. They worked hard for it too. I'm an exol so I'll give eg of exo. They come from sm so they for sure got head start. But do they lack? Do they fall behind in terms of talent? It wasn't handed to them they won it. Its just that sometime ppl dont consider these things and discredit them. If they have that talent and it factor they can make it big. I'm not denying the opportunities they get but ppl should also not deny the hardship they go through to be there.

As an SM stan, I can say big3 privelage exist but you have to get it. SM has so many trainees and literally like 9 or less debut in a group every 4 years. I mean EXO had 100 people competing to debut and only 12 did. Red velvet original concept was like NCT's but it was scrapped so all those trainees waited in limbo until they left. I mean Aespa was supposed to happen but SM kept pushing it back and the original line up all left except NingNing. When SM was creating WayV, they were telling trainees that they're really only looking for Chinese members. Then those members had to compete to try to get a spot in WayV. SM training is like a survival show in itself. Then when they actually debut, most of the groups are hated. This includes F(x), Exo, Red Velvet, NCT, and Aespa. All these groups were hated by the Korean GP, and had to grow up into their names. So while Big3 privilege exists, it doesn't really help as much as everyone expects.

As for why there are so many "untalented" "filler" idols, boy I have an answer for ya: Korean Culture. Your reputation and place in society is everything this is why: - They value hardwork over talent even if the hardworking person isn't as talented - They value an obedient personality over troublemakers. And this goes hand-in-hand with hardwork, because someone, who puts so much effort into something is less likely to do something stupid and make all of that effort go to waste. I mean we're talking about a society where a little careless error can ruin your whole career. - Talking about reputation, working in groups puts even more pressure on you to be a hardworking and obedient robot, because slipping up ruins not only you, but your co-workers as well. However working in groups also means that you can cover each other's flaws (and this is why groups with more members don't usually have outstanding multitalents, but rather people who are only exceptional in one thing really, like Jihyo in singing, Tzuyu with visuals or Momo with dancing, and it somehow works as well as a small group with multitalents). To put it simply: You can't cut, photoshop, autotune or perform plastic surgery on someone's attitude. Why do you all think the idols are overworked even before debut? Raising skill levels quickly is not the only reason training years are intense, but it's also a really good test of whether that idol will be able stand the hardships of a debuted idol. This is just an explanation of how I see things and I don't really condone this way of thinking even if it means I'm shitting on a whole society. I understand wanting to test someone's attitude, because nobody would want to hire a lazy person, but overworking can have the opposite effect and this is why a lot of them end up smoking marijuana or getting in all sorts of scandals to try and get away from their heavily controlled life.

Big 3 privilege is VERY MUCH REAL. Anyone that thinks otherwise is in denial. You see, artists debuting in the big 3 already have an audience waiting on them. In scenarios like, lets take Blackpink for an example, when Blackpink was on the verge of debuting. YG was actively posting introductions for trainees and there was already a literal fucking audience waiting for Jennie to debut. They called her "Jennie the trainee" back then and people were IMPATIENTLY waiting for her to debut so they can bias her and support her. Even big 3 groups with discographies that you absolutely cannot listen to unironically, will still be relevant, in the spotlight and sell a bunch of albums because they always had an audience. Period. This isn't to say that big 3 artists aren't talented and hard working but they definitely do have it easier and that is undeniable. They don't have to worry about "breaking into the industry". Yes, the auditioning or scouting criteria maybe strict for these companies but once these idols have been selected/scouted and don't go through elimination, they'll still come out fine. With groups from smaller companies? Not so much. Especially not when there's groups like SOLIA that disbanded within 4 days of their debut because their company didn't have enough funds to keep them going. Even if they did have the funds, I doubt they would've made it that big. Saying that the big 3 privilege doesn't exist is a big "fuck you" to groups and idols like SOLIA that never even got a chance to showcase their talent and skills simply because they could've done better if they were in a bigger or more reputable company.

4 months later but a perfect example of big 3 privilege is jyp’s new girl group and their “blind package”. no info on the group at all besides they’re a girl group coming in february from jyp but their debut album has sold 60k copies 6 months before their debut, before we even get any info on the girls in the group or even how many members there are or their name or anything. you can partially contribute this to the fact it’s “limited” so people want to make sure they get it just in case but you’ve also got people that a) typically like jyp groups so they’re getting it because they expect they’ll like this one too and other people that b) are buying it to resell it because they know a jyp girl group will be successful and they want to profit off their limited edition debut album. this is absolutely not meant as any kind of hate towards the yet to be revealed members or anything (I even bought an album myself) but it just goes to show the type of privilege that comes from being a big 3 group. you don’t even have to actually be a group yet. any non big 3 company wouldn’t get that type of response for something like that.

Visual and any form of clout pre-debut for idols weighs much more than talent. Kpop is an industry based on those and the more you are popular and visually pleasing the more demand there is for you to be seen everywhere. This explains the stigma why sm is so focused on visual and how kpop big 3 groups have more props and expensive stuff on the visual aspect, so they can reach that standard. Like there are many instances where visuals or members who were famous before are more popular than members with exquisite talent, especially in the big 3z

Thank you for this video, it's a much needed discussion. I had a couple things to add (if only to drive your point further) but I saw in the comments people already said, Yue Hua is a rich company. Only goes to show that even with money, you need to work so much harder to get close to the recognition the Big 3 get. Another thing is that we cannot underestimate the HUGE significance the Big 3 clout plays in monopolizing kpop industry in general. The Big 3 groups collect music show wins one after the other, more than fingers on both of my hands. It's ridiculous to the point that some groups compete with their own track that has FINISHED ITS PROMOTIONS. How does that not make your blood boil? To a smaller group, getting even ONE win can make or break their career. How many amazing groups with potential faded into the background because they couldn't even show what they could do? Meanwhile Big 3 groups collect them like damn pokemons

Fun fact Twice is the only group in big3 that didn’t get the privilege of being in big3. 1. They have go to street and sell their own Tickets for their debut show 2. During Twice debut time early 2015 JYP was on verge of becoming bankrupt and was going to be kicked out of big3. 3. Twice debut song Like ooh ahh didn’t charted well like it didn’t even entered top100 during that era but charted after Cheerup became viral. 4. They had to perform in small venues like in schools to promote their songs. 5. Cheerup’s phrase “Shy Shy Shy” made the song popular and viral not the song itself but later people were hooked with the song and by this way they started to gain hits after hits not because they were from Jype 6. Even though Twice came from reality TV show sixteen the rating of the show was very very low considering the fact that it was from JYPE.

If you're in Sm you can't write shit? That's simply false a ton of idols under Sm write & sm sends them to their notorious writing camps with huge korean & international producers. The difference is Sm has an anonymous system so everyone has to send their work without a name and the best is picked to be released. So basically these idols compete against professional producers and Sm picks whatever they deem top notch. Examples of these idols (Jonghhyun, Taeyong, Ten, Kun, XiaoJun, Seulgi, Yeri, Mark, Amber, Luna, Tiffany, Seohyun, Yuri, Sooyoung, etc..) Also Tiffany had creative freedom about TTS's visual department styling/set designs etc.. Yuri is leading the creative direction of Snsd's new unit and so much more. Sm gives a lot more creative freedom than people think unfortunately the Idols are dealt a bad hand when are put against these professional international producers so most of the time you don't see their work until later on. The other points I kind of agree though. Enjoyed the video none the less and you always present them in a logical way :D

I read some comments disagreeing with EGU about Big 3 debuting some "untalented idols." I think what Kpop fans don't understand is that being untalented is NOT a bad thing. At least in my opinion. Talent, from what I understand, is when it's easier for you to learn or do something compared to people who don't have talent in that field. I will use my girl, Lisa, for example. She is TALENTED in dancing. It's easy for her to learn new techniques and choreographies. She can utilize her dancing ability to be much better than people who aren't talented in dancing. If Lisa and Jisoo (my ultimate bias) both had learned dancing from childhood, Lisa would've definitely still been better than Jisoo because she is gifted with dancing talent. That doesn't mean Jisoo can't dance though. She can dance, but if she wants to be on par with people who have talent in dancing, she must work harder than them because it's simply not her forte. Lisa is NOT TALENTED in singing. Rosé is. I believe that even if both of them had learned vocal lessons in early age, Rosé would've still been the better vocalist than Lisa. Even if Lisa were to focus more on singing rather than rapping, she wouldn't hit the same level of people who have talent in singing who work as hard as her. And if she doesn't focus on it, like her current condition, she will be mediocre at best at singing. What I want to say is, not all idols debuted are talented. Most of them are mediocre or have decent skills at best, while only some of them are naturally talented. And even if they aren't, they still can improve themselves by working hard. The factors that affect the company's decision to debut idols are not based on talent alone, but also visual and if the trainees fit the concept they want to introduce. Kpop groups are products after all. So if we want to speak objectively, yes, idols who are not talented do exist and I don't know why people get triggered so much when I don't see it as negative. I'm talented in drawing but suck in cooking. I acknowledge that, so I work harder in learning how to cook. But I won't deny it if people say I'm untalented in this field. And not all talented idols would be successful too. Talent is not everything, luck, hard work, and privileges do play in an idol's career.

Mamamoo is one of the most all rounded, best vocally, most credited in writing, rapping, and dancing/performance as well as creativity, they're active with their fans constantly as well too. Yet they are from a small company like RBW that honestly would be nothing without mamamoo. Mamamoo being the 4th highest charting 3rd gen group behind rv, tw, and bp all from the big3. Groups like mamamoo, bts, monsta x, etc are proof that big3 privilege exists. Groups that aren't from the big3 didn't debut with already growing fanbases, clout, higher budgets in mvs and performances. And most non big3 idols come in with raw talent since smaller companies can't afford high-quality trainers. Also, idk why people take it as such an insult. No one said big3 groups don't work hard. They are just privileged. Its like some stans act like a company being wealthy, better trainers, more popular previous groups, better budgeting, higher charting groups is all a bad thing..when its not. Stop acting like all that is such a bad thing and stop denying the fact that big3 companies are clearly gonna have higher advantages with their groups over companies like RBW. And big3 groups do have more untalented or "useless" idols in their groups than ones that aren't from the big3. Why? Because other companies NEED the most talented they can find so they can try and chart higher and get more popular. The big3 companies don't have to try. Lastly, some big3 stans sadly you can tell if they stan them either completely for a group's popularity or mostly because of popularity rather than their talents. Meaning if you a fandom in a fanwar, they'll be bragging more about charts and numbers than actual talent or talent achievements or mentions from other artists. Those stans also won't watch many variety shows or stream heavily because they stan them mostly because they are popular.

I dont think redvelvet is one of the groups like that. The artists in redvelvet like wendy,seulgi,yeri and joy were recruited based on their raw talents. Seulgi and yeri were able to pass the Saturday audition which is one of the hardest sm auditions. Wendy was already talented and trained just for 2 years. Joy was initially recruited and had shortest training period but still was able to sing better without proper training. It was wendy and seulgi who had more time to get vocal lessons from good coaches but the other three were still able to carry on with their own talents. Neither of them practically got trained in rapping but still they are able to deliver average kind of raps. When the girls debuted they had to face criticism right away. They were criticized by fandoms from f(x) and and for not being like girl generation or f(x). When their albums got released many critics picked them just because of their vocals just like mamamoo. There is a reason why many smaller artsits look upto redvelvet not for their ppopularity but for their talents and music. Now as for their privileges redvelvet is one of the groups who was supported definitely by their senior groups but when it comes to their popularity it is completely based on their talents. They dont have amazing album sales like their senior groups and sm doesnt even restock their albums though sm is one of the biggest companies. Their umpah umpah mv is one of the worst things a company can do for their group. Their awards or music show wins were completely based on their own talents. Though redflavor was one of the biggest hits of kpop it has the smallest budget but it was definitely a big hit because of the song the girls were able to deliver. After mamamoo redvelvet is one the most talented groups out there and whatever they have right now is completely based on their talents. They did chart well on the charts and so did mamamoo. There are times when mamamoo charted even better than them. Though MMM came from one of the smallest company they were able to release solo songs but this is the first time that a redvelvet member was able to do solo comeback. Even yeri had to request multiple times to release a song in sm station n even had to do all the work from composing to making of the mv. What I want to say is there are groups from big 3 who may have support but they dont always get it compared to even smaller groups(from smaller companies). Some of the groups from big3 are RV, ikon, got7.

'they are too big to care' LITERALLY 😭😭 big companies have too many groups to handle and they can't have eyes on everyone. the big company just has easy access to marketing, music shows, views etc etc. and yes some idols are not very talented but only there bcos they have looks....

having talent is not equal to success. Hard work is the key, every big 3 idol may not be naturally talented yall want them to be, but they work hard as much as other idols. There is no doubt big 3 privilage exists, but the suffering is more too, the negetive energy around u gets increased. Like u get a lot of attention for your debut, you get criticized more, u get hated more, being in big 3 is financially amazing but the other negetive things are there too. And there has to be some criteria which is diferent from smaller companies in selecting idols, there has to be. I can't convince myself that u have to do the same amount of hard work for both type of companies. Maybe its the luck, or visuals. and i don't know about other companies but i do know that yg's trainers are fcking rude and strict. In my opinion surviving in these industries is a bigger task then getting into them. Blackpink was set to debut as a 9 member group but all the other 5 left the company bcuz of delay and hard training. treasure started getting hate from the starting of their career, and they are still not that successful. Objectively speaking big 3 debut can never flop but maintaining that attention is the thing. Like after two or three cbs if u dont make good music people start hating on you. And now that kpop is getting famous globally if people don't like big 3 groups they have much more options.

Fanmu isn't known for their handling of the few idol groups and soloists well. Astro their boy group and Weki Meki their girl group. Astro has 10 days until their cb and all concept videos so far has been released on fanmu's RU-vid channel instead of ASTRO's official RU-vid channel where they have nearly 4million followers. I'm hoping this cb is going to be successful and they gain more fans this era.

That is the injustice and the privilege of big 3 or 4, their debut group will be more waiting even if they didn't release teaser, they can be called genius for doing just too experimental music like Aespa - Next level, Nmixx - O.O and people will talk about it, called them genius or bad buzz but they get the attention that medium/small companies didn't have when they lauched their debut group

Filler members are part of a formula. There has to be an ordinary person like SJ's chinese member. I remember he talked about it in a show. I don't remember the explanation but someone has to be relateable or ordinary?

When i watch video like this i always think about Dreamcatcher, Oneus and Mamamoo..they literally scream TALENT but have not the success that they deserve (even if actually mamamoo is a big group)

I mean if big 3 privilege wasn’t a thing then I wonder why everyone wants to get into one of those companies cuz they are not known to manage their artists ,however ,they have the money and visibility which makes it easier to blow up. In this industry, hard work does not guarantee recognition , that’s unfair but that is how it works. In my opinion

The best example is enhypen from hybe. Their vocals suck, no stage presence and charisma but because their seniors are bts they get the clout.

Even being a trainee under big three is considered "advantageous" and the trainees are perceived as more talented and better. Just watch produce series and gp999. The hype of big3 is evident. Honestly, i got into kpop knowing the first big 3 groups, with bts. Big 3 is a gateway for a groups, artist that is automatically seen as havibg great music etc. I think i wouldn't Stan most big3 groups if they're not part of it. But the hype, privilege and exposure makes me want to stan groups under it. Sure success is comibg along the way just by debuting under big4.

But tbh, Twice didn't have the big three privilege, they had to perform in university classrooms, worked in fast-food restaurants to promote for cheer up, sent fliers themselves to promote for sixteen. Twice never had big three privilege but kpop stans are too afraid to admit it for no reason. LIke they and 300 (around that) album sales when they debuted, in the first WEEK!

What? They had 40.000 sales in 10 days after debut. The reaction was considered luke warm considering just how big jyp is and how popular sixteen was but not at all small.
