The international school argument was spot on! I live in southeast asia and they don't ever teach about racial problems (they only teach us about how colonizers turned us into slaves and thats all) i had to learn about the n word from wikipedia. Students and teachers also make jokes and memes at the expense of black people because they're ignorant. I mean, i haven't even finished learning about my own culture let alone other cultures.

I'm still learning how the history of my country has been colonized twice yet, these people calling me "anti-(race)" because i didn't speak up about the issueーalso i knew the moment i speak up about my thoughts, my opinion will gonna be invalidated in less than seconds.

I think that people commonly forget or ignore that South Korea has it’s own problems as a country and has a separate culture from the USA and the UK. All countries have problems but sometimes, I think comparing our cultures and morals to an idols can be kinda unrealistic in ways. It is similar to people saying that the country that I lived in when I was a little girl is racist because little boys wear braids to show that they’re rich in the 2000s. I also would like to bring up something in this comment from my own perspective but I feel like the community has issues with accepting other cultures then a few. They can be pretty disrespectful as fans towards people of different religions and cultures feeing like their lifestyle has been made to use as an aesthetic and have their god disrespected in a music video. Then all of the stans are saying that the people that feel betrayed are over exaggerating. Etc. Also. I’m not at all religious but I feel like it’s rude to brush stans of our shoulders just because they’re religious Edit: I can’t respond to everyone but the comment section down below is open for any differing opinions. Feel free to open up. You’re never not black enough, too white, etc to have an opinion and I’m open to reading all kinds of opinions. Just be realistic and respectful towards other opinions

That reminds me of that one time a boy band tweeted "Hello Negros!" -Negros is a region of the Philippines- and people started calling them racists, assuming they were saying the N-word. The thing is, in the Philippines and Spanish-speaking countries, "negro" means "black". Just because it's a derogatory term in English, it doesn't mean that it is a slur in other places/languages. I'm from Argentina, and even if I'm not part of it, I try to understand and learn about the cultures I expose myself to through the Internet. I hope people from different cultures than mine do the same.

I agree 100%, international fans (mostly American) are pushing their cultures and values on someone else culture. They are also pushing their beauty standards and their vision into kpop idols that are often very young and vulnerable. I personally think mistakes can happen when they grow up in a culture where they are not educated about those type of issues. I do think that's the company's role to help idols being more mindful of issues that can arise with their actions, rather than hating the idol who started training very young, trained for years, are often without phone and can't contact their friends and family . It's just not realistic to put this pressure on them. The company's power really shows in scandals that arise in China, companies are quick to made sure issues are solved ASAP. For example, do I think Giselle scandal was justified? Yes, because the company filmed, edited, published a video of her saying the n-word, the company should have taken action, identify the issue and never posted the video. That was a massive issue that made me think the slip up was actually intentional. I wonder is some people wonder whether some of those "mistakes" are just ways of getting clout and attention. And yes, stans kpop can be hypocritical, some CA / racisms scandal will be overlooked by some fandom, stans, and communities, while other idol caught into similar scandals will be harassed to no end.

@@z.6480 The issue is assuming that every person from every culture has the same knowledge and understanding as Americans when it comes to racism and the relation between white Americans and black Americans. It's not people's fault if they were born in a different culture, many Asian countries have little diversity in their population, people in Korea interact growing up with 99% Asian people, far away from the American culture, it does not make sense to assume they know your culture and history. They may actually not care, it does not concern them at all.

@@jessicajessica4392 exactly, I didn't even know about racism until some one told me about it. People think that the world works the same way and everyone must know about everything in reality I can tell you majority of people give 0 fucks, no offense. I haven't seen some one talk about racism or islamphobia one time, if you're making such a big fuss over an idol doing something they're most likely not aware of, let's talk about things other idols have done then? Racism that isn't only against black? Let's not forget that Korea has their own problems, su1cide and overworking is a huge problem in Korea, people are killing them selves everyday because they can't seem to keep up with korea's standards, most of them think about becoming an idol from a young age due to this. Please don't think that your problems are important in other countries, its your problem not theirs. No country is obliged to learn about another country or race's history, if yall have black month or whatever, why can't other races have the same? This is a problem that bothers me, i mean, tell me one event from middle eastern history that isn't just wars between America and the UK. I don't think anyone can name any because they're uneducated about this topic. You have no right to think that every country has to know your history, if you're black know YOUR history, not others. Im Arabian and I learn about MY history, not others. Simple as that.

K-pop has always been an escapist hobby for a lot of people, especially young people. The worst communities are always the escapist hobbies. The anime community in the early years was pretty terrible, but now it’s calmed down a bunch since most fans are older. You notice a lot of K-pop fans are pretty young and don’t understand the nuance of critical thinking. Older K-pop fans are pretty chill or they grew out of it because of the actual problems in K-pop (contractual slavery, suicide, and sometimes the fact that they realize how unwoke K-pop is). A lot of the issues you see has to do with the increasing awareness of social issues among younger people (a good thing) combined with the fact that younger people lack a lot of nuance and critical thinking required in a lot of K-pop “scandals.” It applies twitter social wokeness to K-pop which has a different set of cultural issues. If you defend it or you think it’s not the biggest deal, you’re anti black while ignoring the fact that those issues have varying opinions within the black community (even American black communities).
@irondragonmaiden
@irondragonmaiden 2 года назад
You still see it in parts of the anime community. To give an example: the Bungou Stray Dogs fandom is a lot more chill than, say, the Boku no Hero Academia fandom. That's because the former has older fans who've been around the block while the latter is baby's first shounen for a lot of teenagers.

There is also the issue of South Korea in itself not being a very 'woke' country as of right now. Things are moving in a positive direction I think, but overall Korea has a lot of its own issues that get reflected in kpop. I think expecting kpop to be super woke while the country it originates from isn't is just setting yourself up for disappointment. I'm not saying that we shouldn't hope for more open-mindedness but I think people need to manage expectations.

i think the reason why i hate when people say “x idol doesn’t deserve to debut” comes from my fear of rejection. yeah i agree bahiyyih needs more training and needs to polish her skills and i know there are moas who stanned her for being huening kai’s sister but at the same time, i’m sure her confidence will build overtime and she’ll improve. i also agree that if bahiyyih wasn’t huening kai’s sister, she would be eliminated, part of the reason being mnet not giving her screentime. speaking of armies, a few days ago they got mad because someone called yeseo “golden maknae” and op apologized. there was this one army who said that it was disresprectful to jungkook and rm because he was the one who gave jungkook the title, and there are sones saying seohyun was given the title first. also i doubt jungkook is crying himself to sleep because other kpop idols are being called the golden maknae.

I'm not here to deny that it's ridiculous that only a certain people get to have "titles" however, as an ARMY, i can definitely say that i can understand ARMY's POV of why it's not ok for us, and honestly, it's because we're ARMY. we got bashed a lot and called names, being told to left the Kpop community, being called toxic and got the boys dragged on left and right for no reason, and yet when we created something and trend it(although only among ourselves), suddenly we have to share it with everyone who hated us before. for example of these are when people are bashing Tae for his i purple you, and then suddenly other groups are using other colours as equivalent words of love. other example is when we make the tiny 7 trend and others started to call us "tiny seven" (not in a good way) but then they also started to use it. it's frustrates us that we're bashed and shamed for doing it first, and then the same people that drag us then use it freely without consequences./nm

@@hyeji2840 However good part of the "trends" armies have were already used. There were several times other idols are called "Tae", "Golden Maknae", etc, etc and an army comes out of nowhere saying they can't use because it's from their fandom. And it wasn't for "no reason", like Cheryl said in a video, the behaviour of fans reflect on their artists. While it is unfair to them, this is the truth, specially for those looking from outside. I've been there since their debut and I've seen how the fandom behaved over the years and this was all brought onto yourselves because of the bad apples in the fandom which unfortunately are a lot and it's not from being a big fandom but because of bad behaviour. You can defend it all you want but this is what I saw and experienced with army's and I've tried to change my mindset before to be disappointed right after.

The section about racial ignorance is really spot on. I'm white and whenever an idol disrespects a certain culture it always causes a really confusing environment. I consider myself reasonably educated and able to form a factual and balanced opinion, but the problem is that that opinion is not only disregarded but shunned, like "no, you don't get an opinion, you're white". And to a certain point, I understand that. When a culture is disrespected you want to raise the voices of the community that is affected so you can grasp the full scope of what that comment or action did to the people it applies to. But the problem is that that community is not a monolith. I'm not allowed my own opinion, so I have to listen to someone else, but regardless of who I listen to in that community, I'm going to get shunned by the other half of it. If A is offended and B isn't, I'm going to be generalising an opinion either way because I'm not allowed to take the middle road since that would be forming my own opinion. And this doesn't just apply to opinion, it applies to action as well. If I shut up I'm criticised for my silence and not calling out my faves but if I speak up I'm cricticed for speaking up in a place where I don't have the right to do so because I'm white and don't know anything. And I understand that those are all different people with different opinions and all of them are entitled to share them, but it just causes a very confusing and toxic environment where you get called a racist bigot for every turn you take regardless of whether it's left or right.

Woow that makes a lot of sense I never considered this once. We tend to shut white opinions down, because it most likely comes along with people belittling the issue and devaluing the feelings of affected ones, but from that point of view it’s quite confusing as well. As a black person I also struggle as well with this argument, sometimes I simply don’t care and voice it like this only to get called sell-out. You truly never win with those arguments and never get completely satisfied no matter what race you have or on which side you sit of that argument. So don’t think too much into it, it’s okay to not find a definite answer to issues like this, I mean how are we suppose to.

@brianlittrell797 2 года назад
@@HopeeInk I personally don't care if a person says the N word while singing or rapping to a song as long as they don't have any disrespectful intent. I don't see that as a racist act. They are just vibing to a song and wanting to sing/rap every word in the song. I DO care if they have a racist attitude towards any person of any race. However, if a person knows a word is offensive to a race of people then they should be careful and respectful not to say it when they are in public or cameras are rolling. I'm willing to give Giselle the benefit of the doubt that she wasn't coming from a disrespectful place because I know some people do get carried away sometimes. I suspect the K pop companies themselves and some idols are racist though. Not just towards black people either. K pop companies treat their own Korean idols like shit so I wouldn't expect them to respect Black people. People who are racist or deliberately disrespectful towards others don't love themselves fully and completely. They are experiencing a lack of love and they are suffering to some extent.

I've been in book, TV, and movie fandoms outside of Kpop. The shitty reality is that Kpop fandoms move like fiction-based fandoms in its escapism. IT SHOULDN'T BE. You shouldn't be self-inserting unto a person. That idol isn't a character that doesn't exist outside of screen time. Watching videos of idols opening up on vlogs and IG live doesn't mean you know a lot about them. Idols are carefully crafted personalities bolstered by PR teams, companies, music producers, video directors, and stylists. These people aren't your FRIENDS. More importantly, these idols aren't YOU. Kpop fans take shit personally because they feel closer to idols than most celebrities when they are just that. They are celebrities marketed in a way people aren't used to.

I WANT TO ADD THIS DEEP PERSPECTIVE: Black Americans can be very egoistical and ignorant in various ways (not overall). As a Black American, I know this comes from a place of hurt as we dealt with a lot of racism in this country. Sometimes it comes from always having to defend ourselves (especially from being gaslighted by white people) or overcompensating for the failures in our communities, which can lead to anger, hate, or disguised jealousy. ** READ BELOW** Black kpop fans have no awareness of how racially ignorant that our own race can be towards Asians as well. If you look through hip hop songs, there are many instances of mainstream multi-platinum Black artists using the Asian racial slur, ch*nk, pushing negative stereotypes, and making insults in their rhyme schemes. They will also ignore the countless number of times Black artists do CA (I personally don't believe in the concept of CA unless it's claiming somebody's culture or exploiting it in a disrespectful way). They don't realize that their definition of CA goes beyond just music. In the US, Black people open yoga studios, get Asian tattoos, sell work based of Asian art, open martial arts studios, sell merch with Asian art/aesthetics, teach meditation/Buddhism, sell Asian food, etc. If your definition of CA is profiting from another culture that's not your own, then your argument already falls flat. Even in the context of kpop, these companies work with Black choreographers, songwriters, producers, stylists, etc. A lot of these Black music industry professionals would be having a far lower income if they didn't move on a global scale and only focused in the US/UK market. The world does not revolve around the pop culture you've created. There are other aspects of life where you benefit from other cultures and peoples. For example, an Asian woman invented a test kit for HIV which disproportionately affects the Black community and this may have saved millions of lives for Black people all around the world. An Asian person founded RU-vid, providing a platform for Black creators to make money and have a voice, etc. I can obv keep going with examples. You also see ignorance playing out in the political space of the US as well. They are pushing very weird ideas like Asians are privileged in America. They can't fathom that there's a huge wealth gap in the Asian community and many of them are very poor as well . Black people are ignorant about the fact that White people went to Asian towns and burned them down just like Tulsa. Asians also had their land stolen from them like Black and Native people. Overall, I want a lot of toxic Black kpop fans to grow tf up and REALLY educate themselves by thinking critically (instead of parroting ideologies) because a lot of people are getting sick of the toxicity. You don't see Asian people dragging hip hop artists and trying to destroy their careers bc of a racial mistake they made years ago or an ignorant word/phrase they used. As a Black kpop fan, I often see toxic and hypocritical behavior reflect negatively to my image. Image is something that Black people never think about in America, and it has big deal on how you are perceived internationally via media as well as how you are treated by other groups. It also hurts the relationship between Asian and Black Americans. Over the years, I've seen the rift growing between the groups as bad ideas with no critical thinking are pushed, sometimes in inflammatory ways (such as the idea of Asians being white-adjacent). I honestly don't think it was bad at all like 3-5 years ago and this is frustrating to me. Note: this doesnt mean you cant criticize racial mistakes or outright racism from anyone. These examples are not a whataboutism for justifying bad actions by idols. I am also injecting what I believe is CA vs cultural appreciation. I am speaking strictly about cancel culture, generalizing mistakes toward a whole group, and other toxic behavior. I am also trying to let you know that the US industry can be just as bad as the kpop one, even in Black spaces.

Heavily agree with the first part, as someone who is black (the fact that I have to clarify that just to have my opinion validated🤦🏾‍♀️) it’s so infuriating seeing all these black Kpop fans constantly getting away with being racist to these idols and accusing them of things that aren’t racism. And I don’t think it’s ever fair to use the “but history” excuse. Other minority groups don’t act as entitled as the black community does, there are no excuses for racism and terrible behavior. All I ever see in this community is Kpop fans trying to control and dictate what idols can or cannot do, their own personas, their music, other fans, and throwing internet riots over the slightest thing, but keep in mind cultural appropriation isn’t automatically bad, culture is just shared traditions and ideas. They cannot be owned by anyone and can be adopted by anyone. We would not have survived as a species of it wasn’t for sharing and appropriation of culture, it’s how we evolve socially. Gatekeeping people from intangible things purely on the basis of race and or region is classic racism. No need to practice what white supremacists have been practicing and slap a “woke” label on it. No one has the right to tell people what they can or cannot wear or say or do hair because someone can’t handle the fact that people have the right to wear what hairstyles they liked or don’t like a particular cultural practice. It is immoral and violation of human rights. Maturity is realizing no one gets to play authoritarian and realizes the world shouldn’t bend to the boundaries and insecurities of oneself, it’s a type of self awareness that almost no one seems to have,

finally the truth is said! Kpop fans are always so quick to jump on someone when most of the issues in kpop are so gray and not very clear,why can we just stay neutral till we get the full picture? Like we do understand that idols careers are essentially in our hands and one bad comment can ruin them. That’s not to say that they don’t deserve some criticism and they should be “protected” bc um no, criticism is a way that they can know what they did right and what can improve. Ppl just need to stop being too sensitive when it comes to this. And totally agree with what you said about the international schools, when it comes to history topics that paint a country in a bad color(speaking of US cuz that what I learned) they usually breeze through the topic and call it a day, so we actually expect international school to go in-depth when not even the actual country does it, makes no sense

I remember when Wendy had her scandal, people were saying “she’s from Canada, she should know better!” And the same thing happened with Giselle but people were trying to twist and say she LIVED in America and not just attending an international school in Japan, which is completely different. Canada doesn’t have the same history of slavery as America. Most Canadians don’t even know the atrocities against indigenous people such as the Catholic schools so how would they know the history and nuances of Black American culture? And why would an international school in Japan go in depth on American history and linguistics? They might learn English, sure, but they don’t have a black world studies course lmao. Black fans want people to know everything about our history and culture but also get mad when you tell them to educate people “google is free,” “not my job,” etc. I agree it’s no one’s responsibility to educate if they don’t want to, but you therefore can’t expect everyone to know everything. Obviously it helped her, i mean, that was a given, acknowledge you noticed her because of her brother, and run with it, saying that you realised she was actually good, what's the point of denying the obvious. Bahiyyih needs to improve, that's a fact, she is probably the weakest member of the group, her vocals are stable, I'll give her that, but people saying she should be lead vocal are delusional. She lacks stage presence, looks either too expressive and bland on stage, and overall, needs to improve. Her dancing is pretty good, especially considering she is quite tall, she never really has this awkward dancing on stage, and her proportions make her movements really aesthetically pleasing. It does not mean I am full on hating on her, I do admit that she improved a lot during the show, and overall was super eye catching in the Ice cream performance. But her 'stans" refused to consider that her styling and hairstyle during the last few performances totally hindered her performance and her ability to shine, and pretended she was super expressive with sparkling eyes and all that crap. Plus I try not to comment on something without carefully thinking about what I want to say and how other people might receive my words. And when I comment on something when I don’t have all of the facts, I immediately say so, and I try to tell people to take what I say with a handful of salt. I also invite people to correct me or to point me in the direction of the information that I’ve missed. Spot on with the int school... I've seen some people say "they have the internet" used in a similar manner as the international school argument. Unless you actively search for it (and know what you're searching for), follow content creators who talk about it and so forth, most people don't come across this kind of stuff on their own feed without extensive digging. Sadly it's a topic that gets suppressed and our social media revolves around algorithms that only presents subjects we already/similarly consume. Also this isn't something thats usually widely available in other people's country/language (just bc you know English from an international school, doesn't mean you'll actively search for stuff/read in English).

I’ve noticed that a lot of the time when people get into yelling matches over groups, it’s the wording that causes the problem and how people don’t use the right phrase. For example, there’s a difference between ‘I don’t like (insert group)’ and ‘I don’t care for (insert group)’. In the former, you just don’t like, as in opposite of like, a group for whatever reason you may have, be it the music, history etc. But in the latter, you can mean that you aren’t interested in a group because they haven’t caught your attention or just don’t interest you, which is different from disliking someone. The two phrases have different meanings yet people use them interchangeably or only use the first, causing others to get defensive as in their mind dislikes=hates, and it soon escalates into a cluster of misunderstandings and insults.
@brianlittrell797
@brianlittrell797 2 года назад
It depends on how it's meant by the person. There's a subtle but important difference between "I don't like" and "I dislike". You can say "I don't like this group because I don't know them". However saying "I dislike this group" means that you know the group to some extent and you dislike them. A good way of putting it is "I'm not drawn to this group" or "I'm not drawn to this idol" or "This group is not my personal taste".

As someone who grew up in two very different cultures (I am black and part indian)and faced racism from both sides, I can understand, to an extent, why black kpop stans get upset when asked why they don't just stop supporting kpop.From a young age I discovered that people will say and do things to people that look different from them. From micro-aggressions to macro-aggresions, calling you slurs and purposefully isolating you from others (mostly around other kids and not knowing why). When adults would do these things, children would follow. So people saying or doing racially insensitive things don't phase me, but i am familiar with the feeling of having to fight to feel accepted but knowing it is futile as people have already made up their minds the moment they saw my face. I felt worthless,defeated but could not help it, I sought out validation and love from people I knew didn't like me, from getting good grades to cleaning up after myself,staying quiet, not asking for extra food and overall being a perfect kid. I was supposed to trust those people and they were supposed to love and protect me, they hated my existence,however they were still my family. So when someone asks "why don't you just leave?", it feels like my feelings aren't important and everything wrong with this situation is somehow going to disappear, if I just leave I'm gonna stop feeling hurt, especially if I've been a part of this community for years and I share a bond with everyone in it, do my feelings as a fellow fan mean nothing (this is just what I think some fans are going through ). Also other fans cause more damage than their faves, so some people feel like they have to be louder. I understand people that stay even when they are hurt, but silence and departure , in the end, may be the best decision. Don't cry,lose sleep or risk mental health issues over strangers you don't know. The real world is filled with people that will love and cherish you, people that have monkey emojis on stand by don't matter and stop giving your money to the kpop industry that doesn't care about your blackness unless its profitable.

When I learned that, I never used those words again and educated my friends when they would say it just in case they didn’t know. Where I stop giving grace is when someone is told over and over that something is offensive and they don’t care. That’s when I ignore their existence and just keep moving because I refuse for my mental health to be affected by their existence. For this example, I would use Jessie. Her usage of black culture and her dismissal of people who call her out is triggering to me so I legit made it so I would forget she existed. There’s nothing I can do so that she faces consequence because regardless it’s Koreans who will support her, not me🤷🏾‍♀️ the most I can do is not support her and explain to people what she has done if they actually ask. 🤷🏾‍♀️

I'll also talk about how I perceive things here in Brazil. I'm obviously not the spokesperson for my country and this is obviously based on what I understand of our society. I will type out the words in english and portuguese just so yall have a better idea of what I'm talking about, so *heads up* if you find it super offensive and are actually triggered by racial slurs. I'm not mocking you, this in an actual warning. *A disclaimer*: apart from "negra/negro", I don't use these words, not only because they're slurs but because they're just not a part of my usual vocabulary. Again, I just want to better express my point. Also, my vitamin-D deficient ass is not white, as people seem to believe from my profile pic and use to insult me whenever I comment on this. Like most br, I'm of native south american and black (father) and arab (mother, not that widespread) descent so chill. I know racism (and xenophobia, mostly thanks to my two years in the US). In the US you guys have "nigger" and "nigga", pronounced "ni-gr" and "ni-guh". Here in Brazil we have "negra/negro" and "nega/nego" (genders), pronounced "neh-gra"/"neh-groh" (NOT nee-gra/grow) and "neh-guh"/"neh-goh". They sound VERY similar, especially in everyday use, and you'd be lying if you said they're nothing alike. So much so I actually don't even notice when some of my friends switch between the portuguese and english terms, I just get it because of the context and who I'm speaking to and because I'm fluent in both languages. Negra/o is used to refer to someone's skin color/ethnicity. It's literally your "black" and is in no way racist or related to slavery -at least not that I'm aware of. Nega/o is just a short form of negra/o. Colloquialism, basically. A lot of people use it as a way to refer to another person, no matter their skin color; think "dude". So imagine a native english speaker hearing a brazilian talk and just picking up on similar terms being used in everyday conversations refering to other people. I bet my nearly 3 decades of social interaction that a north american with little or basic understanding of brazilian portuguese will think we are using racial slurs and being racist torwards them or someone else and ***_WILL_* try to cancel that person if she's internationally known. People experience life SOLELY based off of what they know and NOT what you think they should know. The average br, aka the person that just learned a second language on their own/through classes and not through actual abroad experience, regardless of notoriety and english proficiency, will most likely associate "nigga" with "nega" and use them interchanggebly with absolutely *ZERO* intention of offending anyone. That does *NOT* make them racist. That does *NOT* mean they need to me chewed out by a crown of north americans (and other brazilians that sympathize with gringos more than they do their own people) on twitter and youtube for being a biggot. It does *NOT* mean they're just apologizing because they were caught (which is probably true, that's what most people do) and that they're lying or being insincere when they say they didn't know. You can't expect people to educate themselves on issues they don't know exist. People have better and more important things to do other than googling "list of things that offend various local and international social groups that I should not do and why". Yeah, it's almost 2022 and yeah, if you're bashing someone on the internet, that person probably has the means to look up what not to do, but you can't expect everyone to do that and it's not because they're bad people. It's just because they have other priorities and bro. If they're not constantly and purposefully being a prejudiced douche, that's actually totally fine. You guys need to understand that your problems, and the problems your community faces, are just that. They're YOUR problems, important in YOUR area and YOUR social context. An ascending brazilian musician that barely got through school because his family didn't have enough money to feed him everyday and the state government didn't do it's job properly is *NOT* obliged to know about african north americans struggles just because he has internet access; and neither is the preppy sheltered rich kid that studied in international schools his whole life just because he has money and was brought up learning other languages, even though he never had any contact with racism and, thus, doesn't really know or understand that it exists. I know I'm being redundant and am giving really specific examples and am talking a lot, but even though I have commented about this a bit right and left, this has been stuck for a while because I'm honestly really tired of getting hate from people that seem to be incapable of considering other individuals realities. I'm leaving this comment here because I do think your channel is a good place to talk about this kind of thing. I know and understand police brutality, racism and social injustice is a GIGANTIC problem yall have in the US and yep, you need to fight for your right to live and be treated as an acyual human being but again. That's your problem, not ours. You need to know about it; We don't. We need to fight against our own police brutality, racism and corruption and we don't *need* to know about and understand your battles, just like you don't need (or want to) understand ours. You need to understand you're being an entitled dick when you expect everyone to know your problems, regardless of where they live and what they have to deal with. You RARELY see people from other countries getting so worked up about insensitive things foreigners do related to their culture. Yeah, some people do try to talk about and educate the offender but if you pay close attention the loud, super angry people aren't even from the battered culture. Come down from your high horses, my guys. In general everyone, apart from north americans, undertands their country, culture and struggles aren't the most important thing in the planet and that nobody is born woke and most people aren't raised that way either. But yeah, I'm really sorry for the super long rant. I don't really expect anyone to read it all but at least I said some of the things I really wanted to say

After watching this video, I have realized that Critical Thinking is dying not just in Kpop, but also from a different perspective. And the worst, when we do not apply critical thinking into our arguments or opinions, its really bad that it affects our well-being and to others. For the Criticism vs Hate, i learned that criticism points out the strength and weaknesses of a subject and it requires recommendation of improvements as a whole. If you read statements and comments, you will know the difference of the two. Love you statements btw ❤️

btw, off-topic (kinda, i think?) i remember when the mina-jimin scandal came up, people quickly accuse jimin and when some people said they wanna stay neutral/not convinced with what mina said, people said "you should believe the victim first" and straight up bully the neutrals/not convinced ones. and then, when the fatou scandal came up, people said "you shouldn't quickly point out the aggressor". idk, it doesn't really sit right with me😕 it feels so hypocritical. would love to hear your take one this. pls tell me i'm not the only one feeling this way (and educate me if i'm wrong somehow)

I've been into kpop for about 3-4 years now too and in my *personal experience*, the worst encounters I have with people who can't take constructive criticism are with blinks (maybe blonks is more appropriate) and Bahhiyih stans. Now, I love Blackpink, they're the ones who got me into kpop and I also like Bahhiyih but I avoid saying anything good or bad about them because the discussions involving them are not very progressive and honestly kind of annoying. Say something good about Blackpink or Bahhiyih > someone will attack you. Voice out a disagreeing preference or opinion about them> someone will attack you. Again, this is just my experience Also I highly agree with the "America is not the world" sentiment and it's unfortunate but it needs to always be emphasized in and outside of kpop. I thought it was the default mindset but years of internet surfing always proves me wrong

Don’t get me started on the number of times I’ve written a long comment (and you know how long those can be lol) and I’ll get dozens of comments attacking the first sentence. I think it was *Edit: It was Katerina Rose’s video, not RosieLuv* who made a video on the LGBTQ+ in KPop. I made a comment basically saying “There are idols who are on the LGBTQ+ spectrum. It’s not our job to find out which ones are and out them”. I started off by asking “Isn’t the statistic that 1 in 5 people identify as a part of the spectrum?” At least 75% of the comments were fighting me saying that the statistic was wrong and not even reading the rest of the comment. I was like... I NEVER stated that it was a fact and it wasn’t even the primary focus of my comment. I was just baffled.

Unfortunately, many of the fans on platforms like Instagram and Twitter are younger, meaning their prefrontal cortices are definitely not fully developed. Their lack of control over their emotions and/or their inability to predict consequences of their words can be somewhat attributed to that. Even as a young person though, we can train ourselves to have more self control and restraint. It seems that not many want to though.

I really agreed with your statement on ignorance vs. straight up racism, especially regarding Sowon of Gfriend and her picture with a Nazi statue. As a Jew, I was pretty pissed when I saw that especially knowing that WWII was a very global event and that she should've known the implications that doing that would have. But, I think now I kind of realize that people are just dumb, especially in very homogenous country where history can be skewed very easily or just not taught because it's not relevant to that country, and the citizens won't know otherwise. I think it's important to have that perspective when these types of things happen because these people might genuinely not know anything and you'll be able to tell based off actions in the future. Obviously fellows Jews didn't and don't have to listen to Gfriend if they find that the scandal made the music sound bitter to them, but to be open-minded enough to know that these people may have really had okay/ good intentions ( like Lisa doing CA when her intention was to appreciate the culture, as many East Asians appreciate when people wear things from their culture instead of finding it offensive, and then apologized a lot and explained that she wanted to show love not hate).

I agree with most of this video so I wont comment on those parts of the video because you hit the nail on the head but some parts just rubbed me that wrong way when you were talking, as an African about Black American issues that you dont experience because you're African and certain situations effect black Americans more than they would Africans. While I agree the lack of critical thinking is very prevalent in the kpop community as a whole (I've seen a lot of it in the past 10+years, trust its everywhere) the way it was said that just black kpop stans lack critical thinking skills when it's much bigger than that comes off some type of way. Critical thinking skills is lacking in the kpop community in general because this is the result of the type of behavior social media can develop especially when younger ones are gaining access to certain social media sites. It's a much deeper issue than just black kpop stans. And to say something about the later part of the racial ignorance section, where you were talking about respect, I'm obviously not going to talk about your experience but as black americans we dont get heard when we're quiet, we get ignored. Theres real life examples of this, we've switched it up before and it gotten us no where time and time again, this is just people being tired and some of that carries over into kpop. This is where our different experiences as a black american and an african come into play. All that being said I'm not here to attack you or anyone here, i rarely comment under videos in general. Ive watched a lot of your videos over the past couple of months since I found your channel, so this isnt coming from a malicious place. I apologize for any spelling errors or if anything doesn't make much sense I can elaborate at a later time if need be but it's late here.

What I find particularly fascinating about this video is how “on the nose” it is. Literally not even 5 minutes of me being on tik tok and I saw a video of your’s titled “I am an anti-black black Kpop stan” and the person who had put it on tik tok not only have no context, I doubt they even bothered to think about why you would even bother to make a video like that. I am an African American, throughout my experience in Kpop since 2019, I really had to maneuver my way through Kpop in a way that wouldn’t sacrifice my own enjoyment. There have been times where I’ve dropped certain groups for various reasons and some that I just simply have no interest in because of some of their problematic actions. Not once have I ever hated on any of them. I have had discussions about them with some of my friends that also like Kpop but other than that, I don’t keep up with them. Why would I? I’m not a fan and I have no reason to say anything about them. Me hating on a group or idol I don’t particularly care for doesn’t do anything. It isn’t going to make them lose money and it damn sure isn’t going to make me feel accomplished. Sometimes I wonder why people constantly give their attention to these idols they claim to despise so much. Cool points? Views? Do they themselves want the attention that comes from “dragging” yet another idol that’s done something wrong? Idk. One thing is for sure, the block button is my best friend.

exactly. this happened with nct when they also had the mosque in the background and scriptures from the quran for one of the maw stages. like i get it’s wrong, but why should nct apologize? the people that should be apologizing are the people at the music show that designed the set. nct aren’t in charge of that stuff, they were just there to perform.

They didn't did this on their own the stylist did the stylist should be called out it's not the idol's job to look up on these days "They could have said no" Do these people even know how the kpop industry works 💀💀💀

I always feel blessed that (some islands in) the Caribbean makes sure that our full history is covered in the syllabus from primary school to tertiary. We start from South American indigenous tribes moving up to the islands and cover the history all the way to independence and indentured servitude. We even cover some American history especially as it relates to us. I have also been in many positions to interact with different Asian cultures. From personal perspective Koreans can be very ignorant and a bit elitist. Note these are from my personal experiences. I can always tell who is more well traveled and exposed to different cultures and assimilate into them. Anf then there are some who just think themselves superior and refuse to blend or at least partake in different cultures. This is why I don't bother with written apologies and instead watch many idols actions. I'm very careful of who I stan and yes that includes bts. I was there from 2014 and I have seen them make efforts for personal growth. They aren't perfect by any means but they show in their actions what I need to see in other idols.

On constructive criticism vs other types of criticism, I don't get why people think we have to come up with the solution to the problem we're criticizing in order to criticize them in the first place. For example, people would get mad if someone criticizes an idol's performance (the vocal is not good, the facial expressions are off, etc.) and this person does that providing the legitimate reasons for why they think that, and then people would demand that person to come up with a detailed solution to the things that they find problematic in order to criticize the idol in the first place. Sure, coming up with a solution is good but it's not required in order to criticize something. It all seems like an attempt to avoid criticism at all costs. The only thing that's required to criticize someone's work is a valid reason for why you think that way.

Hello. I am a Bahiyyih stan. I don't think she is ready to debut (although I am obviously happy she made it). While I completely agree that a large portion of her success is thanks to Kai, I don't think that she got into the group BECAUSE of him. There is certainly a difference between hate and criticism. People who say that she is ugly are trash. People who say that they think her vocals and dance need a bit more improvement before she debuts are absolutely valid. However, my biggest issue with what a lot of people have said about her, including you, is that you say she got into the group BECAUSE of him. I thin this misses what actually happened. People were interested in her because of Kai (and sometimes Lea), and then they became ACTUAL fans of her, because she has a lovely personality, a hardworking attitude, REAL talent, and a great 'little-sister-you-want-to-protect' vibe. She got into the group through the sheer streaming and voting power of HER OWN fandom. And, keep in mind that MOAs are trash at streaming and voting. There is NO WAY that so many MOAs would suddenly become so motivated to stream and vote for someone who isn't even a part of the group, and may not even be related to their bias (assuming their bias isn't Kai). Her fancams were higher in view count than Kai's. She has her own fandom, and needs to be recognised for it. However, valid that a lot of them ended up there because of Kai. They just stayed for HER. Thanks for coming to my TED talk I guess. Completely agree that the kpop community is lacking in critical thinking skills. And common sense. And research skills.

I was very ready to argue some points until I got you 24:00, you covered it all with those points. They don’t care and they refuse to get educated. All in all your points were actually well put and clearly stated The problem is that a lot of kpop stans idolize their idols and expect them to be perfect. These idols are doing a job to get paid and sure they love their fans but they don’t know their fans. You know an idol by name and maybe their family history etc and they know you only as *insert fandom name*. Most fans refuse to accept this. This is why we keep having issues with accountability when idols mess up. You have one side who believe idols can’t do any wrong and then another side that can’t handle the disappointment, and then people who hate these idols for whatever reason and jump on the opportunity to hate and bully.

Thank you for this video. It's very refreshing to hear someone so well spoken and critical in the k-pop community. I've been a fan of k-pop for 10 years and I can tell you things have spiraled out of control for the past 2-3 years, everything has been chaotic, but I really found some light when I found your channel a few days ago. We need more people like you who makes a statement that having opinions and thoughts of your own is valid and that doesn't have to label you as anything (as long as you do it with respect). Also, sometimes people just needs to go outside, hug a tree, feel the sun and air on their skin and realize we're here to be happy, and if k-pop brings more misery and anger than joy, maybe, just maybe, you can take a break from it. Happened to me when EXO lost 3 members, when Jonghyun passed away and when Wonho left Monsta X, I needed to stop and I did it for a while each time and then decided to come back. If something is hurting you, no matter how much you love it, you have to stop and reevaluate if this hobbie still healthy and if it's not, change the behaviors you have towards it or just leave it. Idk, those are my two cents on it. Thank you again for this very well put video. ✨

I've noticed A LOT of kpop stans imprint their beliefs onto idols or tend to use them as a benchmark for their identity. So whenever said idols receives critisisum it becomes a personal attack. kinda of why so many claim idols struggle with mental health, because THEY do and with the close relationship between idol and stan they feel validated in theses assumptions. In reality fans are merely in month/years long para-social relationships with people that don't really know much about. But when you're based a large part of your life essentially around a stranger to the point of giving characteristics, it's hard pull to swallow.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but the world doesn’t revolve around the states. You can’t expect everyone especially on the other side of the world to be in depth knowledgeable about your history. Let’s take Chan for an example real quick, how are we mad at him for not recognizing that Jim Crow pose. Obviously it was insensitive for him to do so, but that’s one of the few incidents where “educate your idol” makes sense. You really acted like he read those pages in his history book and still decided to make this pose even after knowing how offensive it is. He made it because he didn’t know better and wasn’t thought about it. We talking about something that’s so specific to AA culture and history, that I don’t understand that we label him as a racist for not knowing. Where I gonna draw the line is him changing the lyrics and making a joke of the meaning. They obviously talk about the racism that black people face in America. The concept of race discrimination isn’t exclusive to black Americans, even if most of you think like that. It’s something that people face all around the world also in Korea and especially with the indigenous people in his home country. That’s something that he should have a least a basic understanding of and should have known better. Therefore I feel like anger in that situation makes complete senses. I literally lost track but what I’m trying to say is that we like to throw that racist label around for no reason. (But also Chan is a repeat offender and you’re completely in your right to not like this man, maybe don’t send death treats please?) It feels like most of us don’t want to see nuances if a idol does something insensitive to black people. There are things that are quite obvious like don’t paint your face black, don’t say the n word, but there are also things where a little bit more critical thinking would make sense, like the situation I mentioned at the beginning. It’s always like you need to cancel or you’re a sell-out. Critical thinking is something we lack quite a lot in those situations, I get it, it’s always emotional and how you react is mostly shaped by your experience as a black person. But what I wish for is to understand that people have different views on things and that sometimes we need to understand that somethings ain’t black and white (no pun intended). It’s about the lack of understanding that there are nuances to racists behavior, I feel like Americans in particular lack that. Before you as a black person jump to conclusion dragging someone and calling them racist, maybe take a step back put your emotion aside and think if this is really KKK type of racism, a micro aggression, culturally insensitive or just tone deaf. I’m Congolese but also German, I was born here live my whole 23 years in this country, so I feel like I most of the time have a complete different view on such things like this than my black kpop friends who are mostly Americans. Yeah long story short, the next time you see something that you deem as racist take maybe a step back and analyze the situation. Not saying any of these nuances are worth to get ignored or played down, just we should start to match our reactions to the offense.
