Liverpool is booming with plenty of people on CB and starting to use PMR. If you live in Merseyside you will not be disappointed, I have heard at least 50 locals and my antenna is at ground level at the moment.. Without being political I would also just like to say that I think CB is the support group a lot of men need right now, it really offers something unique.

Im in merseyside. Mckinley thru a 5/8 silver rod and getting very little that's readable most nights. Absolutely battered with QRM...7-9 pounds of shite.. I admit the twig is a little low at the moment. Only about 8 feet above the ground. Planning on a bit more height in the coming months and praying for a major improvement in reception.

Great Video Fred Expat now but what great times in November of 81 with Christmas 81 the main present bought was a good old CB. I was 14 in 81 but had been involved in radio since the age of 11 with some cheap 49Mhz radios then moving on to CB in 1979 pestering my parents who finally gave in to buy my a used Hygain 3 80ch AM FM set until legalization when my dad obtained a Dixons store card and bought me the Harrier CB-X at a whopping price of 109.99 pounds. I owe a lot to CB radio and some of the people I got to make as friends and still to this day I am in touch with.. Its been a hobby of mine that has stayed with me to this day, although my Harrier has since gone :( I still own a Ham International Multimode 2 and on my last visit to the UK was given a Amstrad 901 which still works and in great condition but obviously just a nostalgia piece unless I get around to converting it to 10m FM. Long live UK CB and thanks for sharing Fred

Yes CB is a great hobby and we can't rely upon mobiles and landlines. So CB can be a vital lifeline at a seconds notice. It's a great thing meeting people, having a focus and I think Fred has inspired a lot of ppl to get involved...

I was there at the start. Our thought was, after a few deaths with older people getting snowed in, in their cars & dying, that this would be a fantastic safety feature. Thatcher (after many, many protests) gave us those frequencies. Her thoughts? "Give it to them. The idiots will come in, & it will soon die a death". She was sadly, correct. The idiots killed it. Now, it seems, Meshtastic is heading to grow, I hope it doesn't meet the same fate. Off grid comms are going to be vital. Soon. Might try waking up my old CB, too! 😎
@CB-RADIO-UK
@CB-RADIO-UK 3 месяца назад
Yes i totally agree with you. I ve read that the reason (not sure if its true) we got the odd FM channels and not AM /SSB was that they did not want people being able to talk long distance and arange protests remotely. Think miners strike etc. They knew that FM would be short range only with a max height antenna of 1.5 meters. If you went above that you had to drop down to 0.4 watts.

I do Remember when back in the PRE CB/27/81 days of CB when echo mics were a thing, personally i never used one back then but the secretive approach to get CB gear was amusing often someones house was selling stuff or they had a SHED with stuff in. we often went out early morning mobile with a burner stashed in a glove box or at home with those old bremi burners ah those were the days seeing this gets me nostalgic.

Quite a tame echo compared to the echo mics I remember from the 80s, in fact, Dave's echo sounds quite good. In those days a "net" consisted of a bunch of folks who hogged a channel 24/7 and would explain how long they had already been there if anyone else dared to try and use it. If they thought they heard a DX station their response was to turn their echo mics right up to 11 and you could just about make out that they were yelling "CQ, CQ, CQ DX!" but not much else above the din of what sounded like a thousand buckets with the same head in them.

@@CB-RADIO-UK I have about 5s (With gain it 20+) of background noise on my rig when using mains power and have had to go to battery power. It's awesome on battery with no noise at all. I have the crt 6900 clone type the Anytone 5555 and it struggles on a 12v battery at higher powers. I have now bought a step up converter to pump out 13.8v. I figured this out myself but a youtuber sent me a message saying he had to do this too. I always thought rigs ran ok on batteries but it turns out that's when they have a engine keeping the battery topped up high, when the battery drops just a little rigs over 4 watts can struggle. Anyway Stuart Sheldon (AG6AG) was the guy I got the message from, he has interesting videos on the power drops caused by long cables and that one about step up converters. I mention this because one of the biggest factors I have seen putting people off from CB is the noise we deal with now, I have heard two conversations this week about it with many suggesting PMR as a alternative. The local lads in liverpool are talking over Americans I can easily hear because they have too much noise. I know that some people have noise through the antenna but mine seems to come through the power. Some of the best DX's I've heard of late are mobile and one was only using 8 watts. The local liverpool lads are putting 40w out minimum. A lot run Kl 505's or have HF rigs. This power is to cut through the noise. I know you are making a new series or video on getting back into CB and I think with the noise and possible blackouts you might add something about what I have mentioned, a battery backup is not a bad idea or total solution. Also going mobile is a cheap way of getting going as you can use a cheaper antenna, need no amp and can use low power. I think being in the car and away from family listening can also help with radio shyness. I don't have it too bad but coming back and talking to strangers was a little harder than I remembered. I have spent about 8 years disabled and got use to not talking but typing. Being disabled I don't see many people so I have lost my social skills and CB is challenging for me. Sorry for the wall of text fred.

I have to apply for planning permission from DCC, then I'll splash out on a twig and all the bits to set it up (already got the gear in an online shopping basket). Going to run off a battery & solar too (So I can use it when the grid goes down). Also going to make a setup for my mountain bike, should be fun. I live at the bottom of Derby.

Yes 4w FM CB radio is legal in UK. But you are on SSB using more than 4w. Which is ofcourse in no way legal. But l won't knock you as l started on 11m back in the 80s using 400w & had QSL cards from many countries covering 2 walls. But several mates back then had a visit from you know who & all their gear was confiscated & they were fined in court. So l decided the best way to avoid that was spend a few months in night school then sit the RAE. I passed both exams one after the other. So l now have a class A ham licence. I don't knock those still on 11m. But the ham exams have been simplified so much that primary school kids can pass the foundation exams. Therefore it's never been so easy to get a ham licence. The RAE was a nightmare to pass back then.
