Being a child of the 80s I was so conditioned to do passive stretches before a workout but eventually I dropped them out of impatience, lol. I found I did have better energy and results just doing warm up versions of the upcoming exercises, and saved the long passive stretches for the post workout session. Interesting to see that my inherent impatience and laziness was onto something, lol.

It's the same as doing cardio (almost always running) before a workout. It's one of those things people have always done and never stopped to wonder why, and largely still do.

Good to see this information getting around more now! I found this general info years ago, after having some sudden failures in squat and deadlift workouts, and correlating it to stretching after a few workouts.

This was so incredibly helpful! I was just jumping right into strength training and doing my yoga afterwards because I tend to do just passive and restorative yoga most days because of my job. So it is helpful to know there are moves I can do before the strength training! Thank you so much!! 🙏🏼💜💪🏼

As long as you don't passively hold the poses, but you keep flowing through them you are pretty much doing a dynamic/ballistic active stretching. Good choice! :)

I think it needs to be mentioned that there are exceptional cases where you do want to do passive stretching before your training session, and activities that will require going into maximum joint range of motion are one of those. You really do want your hamstrings to be as flexible as possible before you start throwing high kicks, your kicks aren't going to be weaker for it if without stretching you wouldn't be able to hit the mark at all, and even if you could hit the mark anyway and even if the kicks really were a bit more powerful for not stretching is that small gain in power worth the risk of a muscle tear?

Can you do a video of active stretching /yoga to do before a weight lifting workout? a good generic one would be stretches to do for full body, for example before the big compound lifts. I've been looking for a good video on this on RU-vid and haven't found one yet. So there's a hold that needs filling and you'd be perfect to do it!

Hi Liv, I love your informative videos. Thanks for doing them! I'd like to ask You about stretching AFTER the training... Is it beneficial after every type of training? (heavy weightlifting, HIIT, running etc.)
@flameace
@flameace Год назад
Oh... I did strength training some ten years ago, but hadn't much gains and eventually stopped due to lack of motivation. Because there were those rests between sets and physical therapist had recommended stretching in general, I used those between sets rests for stretching.
@Livinleggings
@Livinleggings Год назад
If you were to stretch a COMPLETELY different muscle group to the exercise you were doing this wouldn't be so bad, as long as you weren't about to go train that muscle next. For instance shoulder stretches mid-set during a purely lower body session wouldnt be the end of the world...but really rest periods are for resting!
@flameace
@flameace Год назад
Yeah, I think I did some harm, I stretched pretty much full body and most probably hit same muscles with stretching and lifting... I actually had quite bad hamtsring pains back then, I would guess that doing deadlifts and stretching hamstrings is not great combination.

That's really good info, thanks. As a child I never stretched and was fine. As a tight muscle adult (hopefully no link there!) I started stretching profusely before exercise then again afterwards. I have recently found that dynamic stretching before jog gives me better flexibility when I stretch afterwards!

Hi Liv! Like everyone has said, I’ve learned so much from you and love your content! I was wondering about doing a combination of the passive and active stretching prior to a weight lifting workout. I just love to stretch and do prefer to do it before. But I totally understand what you mean about it not helping. Would starting with some passive then finishing with some dynamic be beneficial? Thanks again for sharing so much amazing information!

I've known this since late 2000's, but I'm AMAZED I had to learn it once I got out of school in 2007 and started training for myself. It should have been taught in PE EVERY YEAR. However everytime I do a Martial Arts or Movement Arts kind of lesson/class I get annoyed by warmups that involve static/passive stretching instead of dynamic active stretching. However it's SO common if I decided not to go to a place that did do it, I'd never take lessons/classes again...

I have never put too much thought into it but I have always naturally done my passive stretching at the end of my training, mainly because I found it was a relaxing way to bring the heart rate down and improve flexibility. Never spent time passive warmup stretching, never made sense to me.
