@@papaburgundy71You may not like the list but blaming this on him alone is a bit much. I'm sure these rankings were a group effort by everyone who works for this channel
@@papaburgundy71lmao, Jason puts together more than a few great videos. About lots of interesting topics, he's also one of the founders I think? You should just go watch ballet or something, you don't know shit lmao
Its not popular but i think Strickland v Izzy is. There is a million arguments against but the fact that Sean's defense was exposed vs Alex and Izzy is one of the best strikers ever made it so shocking that Sean pieced him up. No wrestling, no clinch, just straight striking. KO's and subs can happen from wrong place wrong time but getting beat at your own game for 25 minutes is unreal
sean was trained before the fight by alex. Alex wouldofc address the issues sean had against him and show him izzys weaknesses. Everyone forgets that even though izzy won the rematch, he won from a desperation overhand right that landed. He was getting destryoed worse in the second fight that he was in the first. Alex simply has izzys number and sean implemented what he learned training with him.
A lot of the recent upsets are reminders that those former dominant champions of the early and late 2010s are getting older and a new generation is creeping in. Always sad to see the older generations leave but I’m excited for the future.
"Average" fighters are getting so much better, this usually happens in sports, as it evolves and more and more people grow up in the sport, you see less dominance. It's why the best baseball teams only win about 70% of their games, and that's extremely elite, most years there isn't any team with a .700 win percentage. Even the "bad" teams in major league baseball are really good, they can beat the best team on a good day.
@@theywouldnthavetocensormei9231 Depends on the sport though. In soccer, dominance is just getting more pronounced than ever on every level due to the monetary imbalance with rich teams getting richer through TV deals and poorer teams and smaller leagues losing their best players earlier.
For the same reason you pick this fight, I pick Nunes vs Pena. Pena had nothing for her, but Nunes had grown complacent and froze in the face of minor resistance. It wasn't a skill or cardio thing, as demonstrated in the rematch. Just a wild fluke night.
I remember being a teenager and so excited for Mirko to come to UFC. I had told all my friends about him and shown them tapes I had gotten. Will never forget watching that happen. Jaw, nearly literally, hit the floor.
Yep, I thought Gonzaga was just a stepping stone to a title shot, I was convinced he was gonna make the UFC his bitch. I think he just had too many fight miles on him, all the punishment came back around. He was still pretty damn good though, he finished his career on a 10 fight winning streak, and a tournament championship.
I was in the arena for it and it was the most deathly silent crowd I've even been part of. Still remember how his leg got stuck underneath him. Gutted.
#1 is the time Anderson Silva almost beat Chael Sonnen. You would think it doesn't count, because he didn't win, but just getting close to beating the undisputed and undefeated GOAT of MMA is worth a mention.
The reason I believe in the multiverse is that I’ve met people convinced that Anderson Silva won that fight. But Chael is still undefeated and undisputed.
This is a video on upsets not comebacks. Anderson was the favourite for that fight, so it wasn't an upset when he won. Obviously its one of the greatest comebacks ever
I think if you go purely on how it was done. The biggest upset has to be the 13 second KO of Jose Aldo. The fact Aldo was unbeaten in nearly a decade. Like its not like people counted out McGregor but 13 second KO was a huge upset.
@@Mafiatunes1 go back to WWE, little boy. McGregor fans are children and the adult ones live in their parents basement and obsess over his money like it's their own. 😂😂
Even if you went off of performance, it would go to Dillashaw vs Barao. TJ was a nobody fighting a guy who was smoking his division. The Mendes/Aldo fight made Jose look beatable and Conor had a nuke for a left hand at featherweight.
Yep, I was over at my brother in law's house, we were all partying and having a good time, me and his wife were the only ones paying attention by the main event. Crazy shit.
@@theywouldnthavetocensormei9231 i was staying at my cousins house and we woke up before the costa rockhold fight (5 am) i almost fell asleep before the kick too, crazy times
The fact Peña actually thought she had a claim for a 3rd fight is crazy. Can’t get over her screaming like a drugged up banshee during Amanda’s retirement speech.
No one ever talks about little Nog losing to Sokoudjou, that by far is one of biggest upsets. Sokoudjou was a guy no one ever heard of and was literally 2-1 with 2 wins over nobodies, while little nog was a top light heavyweight at the time going 11-2 with wins over guys like overeem twice and hendo, and then when they fight, not only does sokoudjou finish little nog (who had never been finished before) but does it by knocking him out in under 30 seconds. Definately in the top 5 upsets, if not, the #1 upset for me
You can blame this one on the punchers chance. A guy as strong as Sokoudjou just needs to connect one good angle and it's light's out. I personally find it much more upsetting when a champ gets decidedly beat, and its just clear that the other fighter had a more skilful performance (see Nunes or GSP)
@@ypsilonick8738That's true about the puncher's chance. The amazing thing about Sokoudjou is that he followed up his defeat of Lil Nog by beating Ricardo Arona. Having wins over those guys 5 fights into your career is pretty damned impressive no matter how it happened. I was just looking at his Wikipedia page and he also has a win over Jan Błachowicz too.
What's more Lil Nog was a -2500 betting favorite going into the fight. As far as upsets go, its easily the biggest in terms of betting lines as its even bigger than Rousey vs Holm. Sokoudjou was brought in as a layup for Nogueira but my god, it easily tops the list of 'when can crushing goes wrong'.
Sokoudjou was wild. Dude had so much physical ability, everything he did looked explosive. But put him on his back and he forgot which direction was up lol. If he had the training and fight IQ to back up his physical prowess the dude would have been an absolute monster.
Imo there is no way Barao and Dillashaw is 14. Barao was an absolute machine and was smoking everyone. TJ was a 9 to 1 underdog and no one gave TJ a chance
Not only that, but it was a 5-round, one-sided absolute fkin BEATDOWN, with a finish to top it all off. imo that's WAY more impressive than just a quick flash KO
@@bongologist420 It was so convincing it left no doubt in anyone’s head. I couldn’t believe my eyes. Imo this fight should of been third behind GSP vs Serra and Nunes vs Pena
Maurice Smith is so underrated. He's the first kickboxer to really figure out the wrestling dominant UFC. I feel like people don't mention his fight against Coleman enough. And I can see what you're saying about his record but those loses made him better. Once he started training with Frank Shamrock they both really started to train "mma"
I remember Renan Baraos face in the first fight after the second or third round looking to the guys in his corner, he was totally lost, and would have done whatever they told him to do it was like he could not believe what was going on. I bet he just never learned how to lose, so much of his life and formative years were spent being “the guy”….that great winning streak ended up being a sort of curse.
I'd never thought about Barão not knowing how to lose and I think you're onto something. Until the loss to Dillashaw he was considered one of the best fighters in the world and looked like he had a chance to go down as an all-time great. That one loss not only derailed his career but also seemed to erase everything he'd accomplished up to that point. It's kind of weird in retrospect.
@@BiggieTrismegistus It explains what happened afterwards, Barao attributed the first Dillashaw loss as fluke and when they re-matched it showed in Barao's performance as he didn't look any better than last time, it was very much a repeat performance from Dillashaw. Barao's confidence was completely and utterly destroyed by what TJ did to him, and even when he wasn't fighting TJ from then he had poor performances even against middling competition, losing more often than not.
Sean beating Izzy by decision was 14-1 odds biggest upset in history. Izzy’s losses don’t take away from the fact him winning the way he did was 14-1 odds
@@AnglephileSwedenGermanhe really didn't he was back and forth between unranked guys and top ten guys and got it because of short notice and because izzy said so and he called the shots at his weight class.
I’d love to see you make these kinds of videos longer! Your content is very entertaining with loads of underground knowledge that keeps me dialed in. I appreciate the work you guys put in, it helps me forget about what I got going on life
Man, griffin's win over shogun is rarely given the respect it deserves. Griffin had just lost to Jardine via KO, while shogun had lwon the middleweight gp in pride by destroying overeem and arona in the finals !!!!
Rockhold v Bisping 2 is blatantly the biggest upset of all time, he had one eye, spent the camp losing weight, all 2 weeks of it and Luke was battering everyone including Bisping who he choked to death a year earlier. Doesn't even make the list, astonishing..
In that matter serra victory. That win was all on Matt, Matt popped st Pierre good. The punches that hurt him was attributed to his power and not over confidence by st Pierre.
Agree, love GSP and he is a better fighter, but I hate when a guy like him loses and they talk about what he did wrong, not what Serra did right. Just weird to me.
Crazy how I attended 4 of the biggest upsets in ufc history and my first even ever was #1. I remember Juliana finishing Amanda was just ridiculous everybody in the arena went crazy
@@mfc5808 Nunes vs. pena 1 Edwards vs. usman 2 Schevcheno vs. grasso Rose vs Esparza. My favorite moment I’ve seen live will always be the edwards knock out. That moment was so unexpected and crazy
Holm-Rousey is the GOAT. who doesn't remember where they were when that happened..? people literally thought that Rousey might be able to take Floyd Mayweather before this happened.
Cro Cop vs Ganzaga was one of the first UFC fights I ever watched live. I remember my dad hyping him up and showing me Pride highlights. My dad used to rent the UFC vhs tapes at blockbuster, its crazy how the sport has changed
I’m surprised Bisping v Rockhold 2 wasn’t on here. Bisping was short notice, got ko’d in the first fight, and legit only had one eye n still pulled it off by ko
Carla beating Rose when she already had a finish win over her is a bigger upset than Bisping KOing Rockhold on 17 day notice when he got headkicked and choked out in their first fight??? Idk who picked the entries but wtf
I think what makes Strickland v Izzy an even bigger upset is the style. Nobody should be able to make a Philly shell work in mma, and parrying strikes is insane when you can get a kick launched at you from the same side, but Strickland makes it all work and has some of the best defensive stats in MW, gave Izzy a crazy low accuracy stat
Hey guys great analysis as always um Jason told me to follow Luke on a website and I went to it and I thought it was weird but I looked him up despite the big ***** ***** and best of luck with all that but personally I exited my tab and continued my bloons tower defense IV run
I just want to mention DDP vs Reaper as a non-title upset. That was insane, Robert was just outclassed the entire time and he was the 3rd greatest middleweight of all time in his prime.
man, I've been an mma fan for a long time and was a huge fan of Pride, Mirko being my favorite. I convinced some friends to check out mma and was going on and on about how my boy Mirko was about to tear through the division and be the new champ in no time 😑
I remember watching Usman vs. Edwards II and my jaw hit the floor the same time Usman’s did. I never thought Leon had a chance to pull it off. Absolutely wild upset.
Look forward to the mike bell video this week lmao What a joke of a judge. That mf shouldn’t be able to judge a dance recital let alone a UFC main event 10-8 in the fifth for 90 seconds of domination is one of the most egregious score cards I’ve ever seen
Yeah, it sucks, but I’m almost certain he did it because he realized he misscored round 4 for Shev and felt he had to fix it. It sucks that it had to happen like this, but the right person left with the belt at the end of the day
Even if andersons record gets beat i doubt anyone will do it as well as he did, it was truly special to watch that man perform and nobody has the same aura as prime anderson imo.
The way I see it, what I do to measure and evaluate how big of an upset a fight was, is that I imagine myself going back in time and telling past me the result; how I'd respond. That's why I think Gonzaga v Cro-cop is the greatest. I was ten thousand percent sure Mirko would come and dominate the UFC, I was a pride evangelist and couldn't shut up about the talent in Japan. I hyped up everyone I knew to watch it and told them how superior and more taxing and higher level the grand prix system was, kept saying his fight with Fedor in 2005 was the greatest fight ever, taught them about the Left Leg Cemetery stuff, showed his face off with the Axe Murderer and the KO... and etc... If I told past me not only the result but also how it would happen, past me would laugh present me all the way to the psych ward.
I can agree with the #1 pick. Matt Serra still had a wealth of experience to draw from in comparison with Peña, even if his fight was just as seemingly hopeless against GSP. Peña's upset against Amanda truly felt cosmic in every regard
Dillashaw vs Barao 1 is still one of my favourite fights, Dillashaw was untouchable in that fight, immaculate performance. Dillashaw just schooled him everywhere. Also Sapp is an asshole for trying to piledrive big nog.
Lil Nog vs Sokoudjou? Randleman vs Cro Cop? Lawal vs Newton? Griffin vs Shogun? Griffin vs Jardine? Liddell vs Jardine? Liddell vs Couture? Alexander vs Jardine? I’m sure there’s more that I haven’t mentioned that aren’t as well known to many fans.
I may be misremembering, but is this the first video that includes LIVE fight footage and not just screenshots? 9:40 with the Anderson/Weidman 1 knockout
One thing that people get stuck up on when talking upsets is gambling odds. But there's a difference between an upset on the books, and the size of an upset in perception.
Holm knocking out Rhonda is still one of my favorite and most satisfying UFC knockouts ever! That, Hendo flat-lining Bisping, and both Dillashaw KOs of Cody!
