Paul Pierce and Kyle Lowry's last-second battle to determine who's going home needs a deep rewind

The 2014 Nets and Raptors had a lot in common! They both have a history of terrible records. They both started the year in an embarrassing fashion. And they're both facing elimination in the first round of the playoffs. Seeing as how it's at each other's hands, I don't think they'll be bonding anytime soon.
And besides, their differences are more defining. The Nets spent lavishly to boast one of the best (in theory) rosters in the league. Their starting 5 at the beginning of the year was Deron Williams, Joe Johnson, Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett, and Brook Lopez. That's 5 all-stars.
Whereas the Raptors have a quiet payroll that supports one all-star (DeMar DeRozan), a bunch of young guys, and a point guard who was their second choice and they tried to trade away. (Kyle Lowry)
To find out how these similar but different teams got this win-or-go-home battle, we have to rewind.

The Nets would make a fascinating collapse episode. Their all-in push fell apart and gift wrapped the Celtics their core of Tatum and brown, and when they managed to get a big 3 of KD Kyrie, and Harden, it only lasted 16 games and they had to blow it up too.

This is a tough block to watch, but man… seeing Kyle break out in 2014 to become the East’s most well-rounded PG for a 6 season stretch that ended with a ring was great, and now he’s the savvy vet proving he’s still got stuff in the tank ala Pierce here.

@@GuntherBovine I mean, yeah… if you want to make the obvious “thicc” joke, it’s on the table. But Kyle’s game was well rounded. He could drive to the rim & get buckets alongside foul calls. He became a better three point shooter. His defence got better off-ball, picking the lane for steals & putting his body on the line by taking charges. Lastly, he elevated every player he played with, something he’s still doing now in Miami these playoffs. His intensity & mentality rubs off on other guys & they all buy in. He was the leader in 2019. That fake 3-dimensional thing on the baseline always pissed me off and made me root against the Raptors back then. Yeah I’m autistic and I won’t apologize

I think it would be amazing to rewind on the 2021 finals. Bucks winning the first championship in 50 years. Giannis getting a gruesome injury against the hawks and coming back to average 35 ppg in the finals. The suns using their bubble momentum and Chris Paul reaching his first finals. It’s a super underrated narrative and would make a fantastic video.

Lol obviously still hurt and shell-shocked Bucks fan needs to see something soothing and validating after the Jimmy Butler utter domination to the point that Giannis is acting like a scared puppy on the court that just happened. xD Sorry, not sorry.
