Hello, new subscribers (and old subscribers)! A brief introduction for anyone who may need it: My name is Seren, and I am an artist-activist, writer, critic, and cultural preservationist- essentially, I like to get to know Black people and how we live. That’s what we do around here 🤟🏾✊🏾 We support Black-owned businesses and individuals with the goal of autonomous Black communities.
I’m extremely pleased to be presenting to you the first of our season two BONUS episodes of ‘The [Black] Americans’ docuseries! The [Black] Americans is a series of public conversations dedicated to archiving and exploring the cultural narratives of Black Americans - Descendants of American Chattel Slavery. In this, our second episode located in St. Louis, I discuss gentrification, segregation, homeschooling, urban agriculture and more with Alicia, who was born and raised in the city.

A moment in time! It was such a pleasure to sit down and chat in person with such a genuine, honest and kind soul such as Seren! Thank you so much for the opportunity and experience! I couldn't agree more with the comment about the lack of initiative for community autonomy and black autonomy from the white system. I also feel like we lost the mindset to do for ourselves in the sense of not relying on white people/white systems due to the trap of assimilation. If we would get back to pre-assmiliation mindset, it would be so much more beneficial for Black Americans as a whole.

When I was in elementary school, we had all black females and male teachers. It felt good. It was like a warm hug. Then we had an influx of white teachers, where a lot of cultural confusion came into play. I never knew, we pronounced words ask and library “wrong” until one of these teachers pointed it out. For me we said axe or liebarry. Then the school closed after this influx.

One of the main reasons my granduncle left the south, was because he was being stalked/harassed by a white woman who was obsessed with him. He knew, nothing good would come of it, so he got out of there ASAP!

I’m barely 10 minutes in and I’m like... thinking back realizing how often I was offered to go to “special programs” at schools outside of my neighborhood because of my above average grades.... I even was allowed to stay in one school despite being out of district because my grades brought up the schools average. Then high school and cut to me being bussed every day several towns over to attend a tech school cause I tested high on the psats in 8th grade... and yes melanin was lacking at all of these locations...

Hoodoo is just as much of a religion as Santeria, IFA, Vodou, etc. but foreign blacks don’t want to admit it. We traditionally lean more towards ancestral worship and animism as opposed to honoring deities. Even the way black Christians praise and worship is heavily influenced by hoodoo.
