You know its gotten bad when the fan-made arma 3 film got more praise for being historically accurate than big triple A company productions

That strange looking tank was a Crusader III, AA Mk I am anti-aircraft vehicle however due to the allies essentially having air superiority they were often used against ground targets.

5:13 As a brit I second that! A HBO series about the British and Canadian forces would be brilliant but it will be harder to sell to a US audience which would be their main target audience.

the name of the tank u were asking about is the Crusader AA 40mm Bofors gun. Its not actually a tank or a support vehicle but an SPAA that wouldn't have carried out the functions shown in the video too often as it was lightly protected👍

this has more care in battle cinematography and more realism than vanguard

13:27 This is a Crusader AA Mk.1. It’s a Crusader light tank with its turret removed and refit with a open top turret with a single 40mm Bofors. The 6-pounder was replaced with a Bofors 40 mm anti-aircraft gun with an autoloader and powered mounting in an open-topped turret. The crew numbered four: gun commander, gun layer, loader, and driver. However, those Crusader III, AA Mk I used in NW Europe from D-day on did not have the turret, but a 40 mm Bofors gun mounted directly on the hull top with its standard shield.

The AA Tank you are seeing there (13:27) is a Crusader Mk.III AA tank with 40mm Bofors.

When you was the 1973 series "world at war" some American said the British and Canadains were so slow in closing the Falasie Gap because they'd been at war for 4 years and were too scared to take casualties, either forgetting or not knowing that while the US were chasing defeated, broken units, the Brits/Canadians were facing the cream of the German army and Waffen SS panzer divisons. Compared to Caen, the yanks under operation Cobra had a cake walk.

Good vid, man. And I agree, there should be a miniseries about the British. One problem I notice in the video, which is in most WWII-based videogames, from 2:08 - 2:19 the soldiers carry their weapons at the shoulder like the modern-day 'ready stance' (they move like a modern SWAT team clearing a room). They should be using 'port arms' or 'trail arms' when running with their weapons. I also see some guys moving while firing their SMG's from the shoulder (again, modern-day) when they should be firing from the hip.

100% agree there should be a series about British paras on D-day or they could jump between the infantry storming the beaches and fighting through Caen and the airborne forces.

This is a great look into something i know very little about even though I'm from Saskatchewan. Very interesting we didn't learn about this in high school. In grade 10 WW1 (before and after) was covered and grade 11 was WW2 (before and after). Thanks for the information, can't wait to follow along with this channel. Keep it up!

Very insightful video, this 'gameplay' really does help to portray the brutal reality of this battle. Although just a videogame I feel like Arma 3 (if done with the a good group and set-up by someone who knows the history etc) can give a good insight into how WWII battles were and helps you to respect those who fought in such wars even more.

The vehicle you couldn't find is the Crusader AA MK1 (40mm autocannon, amalgamation of Crusader 3 chassis and AA MK1 turret) - it's technically supposed to be a SPAA but it played infantry support roles as well since it was still a Crusader and it's turret was fairly well armoured against small arms.

As a Canadian love learning more bout our war history I see it as a duty for those who fought.

Caen was so slow to capture because the Germans deployed their densest concentration of armour ever seen in WW2 there. Added to that is the fact that the Americans gave up on St Lo in June. Had the Americans applied pressure against St Lo the Germans wouldn't have sent all their armour to Caen (7 panzer divisions by the end of June).

A very good point you made, that i haven't really thought much about is the one about how uneven casualties were, like it seems pretty insane how you could have some units that would be practically unscathed, while others practically annihilated

that tank you asked about is a crusader hull with a turret fitted for a 40mm anti aircraft gun they were a great asset but did not carry a lot of ammo and the armor was vary thin

This is extremley historicaly accurate depiction of battle.

Fun fact: at 13:03 we see a Gewehr 43 being used. This weapon would commonly be issued with gaping gas holes and after prolonged use would be rendered useless.

It would be awesome to see you make one of these, its easy to set up the mission and units but idk shit about making it into a movie like this.

Question, If i were to start researching the battle for Caen, where should I start looking?

The fight for Caen was to draw in the German armour and keep it away from the American beaches. The Germans had stopped the Americans cold three times in Sicily and Italy with the British and Canadians picking up the slack. The Americans were vulnerable until they got their big armour formation on the ground. And for that they needed time to take Cherbourg. The Germans knew that with their armour counter-attack, they could push the Americans back into the sea. Everyone, including Eisenhower, agreed.

A great game that someone might've been able to use for a cinematic film would be post scriptum; iirc most of the houses still have peoples furniture and belongings unlike Arma

7:47 yes indeed! A group of Americans landed between 2 big bunkers and only lost one soldier!

quick fact about arma from a guy that does arma milsim, depending on the mods they are running they can go uncon (unconscious) if they are hit. if they dont go unconscious they get hit and start bleeding out. if they bleed enough theyll go into shock if someone doesnt stabilize them. in the game it helps to do battle damage assessments because it saves lives especially in 1 life realism events. not screaming at you for being wrong just saying that yes there is a way to have wounded that are actual players that are on the ground screaming for a medic or trying to crawl back without getting killed. i myself have had times where i was in an event, got hit, mopped up the battle with the division i was working with then as i was walking back to base camp to get orders i noticed my ingame vision was all fuzzy and gray then i just bled out from the wound i didnt realize i had. your limbs can also be broken by falling or being shot in that body part and can render aiming or running not an option

I appreciate both this history and these Arma 3 videos. Its rare to have a game that has videos like these of actually in-game footage without using outside sources like photoshop (Editing excluded of course). If a game is designed to run Community servers, then the game is planned to never really die, compared to official servers only.

My only complaint with historical accuracy is the German Imperial flag on the side of the helmet it was removed after the battle France in 1940 some units still used it in 1944 like the 352nd Wehrmacht who where stationed on Normandy and where destroyed at the beach’s on Normandy but the luftwaffe ground forces did still keep the insignia till the end of the war

One thing I never get to see in any documentary/video is the extensive use of anglo/French artillery by the wermarcht . During the summer of 1940 The Germans were able to capture so many French 75mm and British 6 pounders that that they were integrated into the wermarcht as part of their standard artillery regiments in the western front.

May i suggest you look at the history of the 1st and 2nd Northamptonshire Yeomany around Caen. This tank regiment was just about destroyed on Totalise, even though Joe Ekins nabbed Wittmann...some Canadians make a claim for it, Joe got him😉
