Just purchased a 2020 230 xdrive. One of the main reasons was the size is right having comfort and practicality but still feels really sporty. Put it into sport mode and you feel like you are driving a sports car with instantaneous acceleration and great road holding ability. The ZF 8 speed transmission always seems to be in the right gear and in comfort mode highway drives are quiet and relaxed. Most new BMW’s have been upsized but this reminds me of my 2001 330i which I really loved being a true drivers car. Thanks for highlighting so many of the 2’s great qualities.
I've had my 218d for two years now. Absolutely loving it, driving it back home after a long day's work is always the highlight of my day. I'm always amazed at how buttery smooth it drives.
@@msimomi only 30k over 2 years? That’s a bit too low for a diesel car. Beware of the dpf mate and hopefully you drive some long distances from time to time. Enjoy the car!
What a great video. I'm in the market for a car at the moment and after reading the spec sheet of a 2015 228i, I realized it had all that I wanted. Now in my enthusiasm and research, I ended up here, and it has only made my excitement about one stronger. Praying to find a manual in my budget, but you can never go wrong with ZF.
Just got my 19’ M230 and I absolutely love the car in all aspects (first time BMW owner as well). After seeing this video I have a new found appreciation for the amazing machinery I’ve got my hands on. Great vid!
Great review, have a 2015 225d for nearly a year now and it's great. Identical to yours but with black leather and love the auto box too. Can't think of any other car that could replace it.
I have the 2018 BMW 230i and i love it. The performance and speed is out of this world. We know the M2 - M4 is fast as well but i was amazed what the 230i could do and now i upgraded and modifying the engine and exhaust system and getting ready to tune up. Awesome video
Love my 228i. Was originally going for a 428i (first bmw) and liked how for less money I could get something faster, more nimble, and a modern version of the classic bmw coupes I grew up with
Amazing stuff, I agree with all of it, cargo space is unreal. I would add that there is even an Xdrive version for people like me who get snow for months out of a year. And with purchasing the 4cyl version I am capable of achieving 35mpg on the highway in eco-mode. The ability to have a snow-going, economic, but 5 second sports car is a dream come true. I only paid 23K for mine with 20K miles. Find me a car that does all that with a luxury badge for 30K
I, like you, think the 228 is a beautifully designed automobile. My 228 has the eighteen inch wheels which match well with the overall dimensions of the car, in fact, I think they're the perfect size. Any larger or smaller size would spoil the harmony. My favorite angle of view is the low and front 3/4 shot. The hood and fender seem just a little longer in a supermodel leggy type of way at that angle. I agree with your great review completely.
I recently purchased a 2020 2 series coupe in the same blue as the one on here but my interior is a rich red color and is GORGEOUS ! Drives and rides like a dream .
Almost closed in on buying a 218d M sport, it's feels perfectly fast for real world driving, perfectly comfortable and makes you feel somewhat special when you drive it
Great content as always. Agree that the 2 is a welcome departure from the Bangle BMW design language and seems just the 'right' size. Look forward to future content and best of luck with the car.
New to the 2series-life. I bought a 218d a few months back, im absolutely in LOVE with the car. How it handles, how it feels in the interior, looks... Best daily driver. Also allows quite alot of sporty driving, even as a diesel.
I had a m235i. Sold it looking for something else just as fun and practical. Nope it,ain’t out there bought a m240 convertible and it is the best car. Fun, powerful and a convertible when you have the weather. Good video explains what owners already know.
RWD/AWD, auto/manual, diesel/gas, 4/6 cylinders, coupe/convertible, track beast or comfy daily driver... there's a 2 Series for almost everyone out there. Love the subtle, handsome styling. Interior materials aren't unreal and the car lacks a few toys, but the ergonomics and build quality are top notch. I'm just glad BMW still has the balls to offer a sporty coupe with a longitudinal engine, rear-biased driving characteristics, and a 6 cylinder. A standout in its class for sure in this day and age. BMW put a lot of effort into a car that doesn't sell nearly as much as their other models, and I hope coronavirus doesn't affect the future of the next 2 Series because it's absolutely a car that doesn't need to exist but I love that it does.
@@ohioplayrs1 I am looking at ordering a 2021 230i 6 speed manual in Mineral Grey Metallic and the dealer has one in stock but it is the automatic. Beautiful color for sure.
Well said. But I’m struggling on defining which trim I should pick. 228? 235? 240? Etc... And I like the 2017-2019 model... convertible is what I have in mind to have some fun with my kids on weekends why not. Any comments?
Yeah, not the best British accent, but appreciate the May shout out. I first experience a BMW in the Supra. Loved it and the ZF so much, just ordered a 2 series. I hope it’s as good as the Gen you reviewed. Thanks for sharing!
Agreed. I’ve enjoyed the 6 cylinder cars I’ve owned but this car has plenty of power and acceleration and with a little bit of tuning, it’s downright fast.
I got my 14 228i m sport delivered a day after this video came out and it just made feel a lot more proud than I already was about owning this bmw . Great video
LOOSEGOOSE I’m currently searching for a 2016/2017 2 series m sport Xdrive, but with corona and everything that’s going on it’s slowing down the car business
Great video man, preciate the effort you put into this content! Definitely planning on getting the convertible version of this. Any differences that come with that?
Thanks for watching! Your channel looks great! As for convertible 2 series, I wanted to track my car so I intentionally stayed away from the vert. Having had several, including two BMW Z4s, I love open tops and I think the 2 series makes a perfectly proportioned one.
I own a 17 220d manual. Although it’s a replacement to the 1 series coupe, I think it fits the gap between the e92 and the 1 series. 4 series looks loads bigger then the e92. The manual feels great to use and it’s definitely a pretty car. 220d js fun but almost a bit boring, but ig that’s bc it’s a diesel and I haven’t really had any chance to have fun it in, despite doing 5k miles in 3 months. Definitely happy I chose it over a golf gtd though. Got mine for a really good price with every option ticked minus 2 (no harmen kaaden which doesn’t bother me and no pro nav). Red heather leather seats, heated steering wheel, sun roof, dual zone climate etc. it’s an amazing car all around, just wish that 6th gear was longer as I’d like to sit around 1700rom at 70mph rather than 2k
Glad a channel like yours exists and that you picked the lighter 4-pot model as it seems like so many others go for the M235/240i instead. I have a 15 228i m-sport as well but in silver. My last car was a F30 328i in that beautiful estoril blue but unfortunately was totaled by a drunk driver who blew right through the intersection. I guess the silver lining is that it got me into this 2er instead which I've enjoyed more. Excited to follow your experiences with this car!
I'm so sorry to hear about what happened! What a a-hole🤬 I also lost my beautiful 328 to someone that ran a red light 😢 I'm thinking of getting a 2016 228 with only 20k miles on it! Can't wait to test drive. Hopefully no one buys it 😅
Got an Audi A4 riddled with electronics issues.....shopping for another BMW. I loved my 1 series and 3 series but this car looks sick! Great video! Sub and Like added!
I have a 1 series m Sport convertible and a new shape Audi A3 Cabriolet, the 1 series has hydraulic steering and hard suspension and the Audi has sports suspension but the chassis is so stiff due to the MQB platform so deals with poor road surfaces better, but has electric steering which doesn't have the same natural feel as the BMW. I actually love both
Glad to know I'm not the only one that thought the rear 3/4 view angle of the 2 series looks better than the 4 series or those Grand Coupe variants from BMW. Very classy and well proportioned design and very close to the E46 generation 3 series.
@@andreiboros10 My average consumption is 6.5lt/100km. And this is equivalent to 36mpg. My car is like a toy. It has a fun ride. I don't think I could experience this in a larger and heavier model. But 2.25d is not available in our country. Maybe this might be a better option.
Then you’ll be pleased to hear that most of these vehicles particularly the M235i and M240i had the steptronic, which is an on demand manual shift with the stick or a paddle shift with the paddle shifters. This car is honestly the best!
May I compliment you on your vocabulary and such an entertaining informative video. I’ve just put a deposit on a 2017 218d with sexy red leather seats ❤️😁 had to have it after a test drive.
I recently purchased a 2021 2 series Gran Coupe. Mileage is great (25/26 locally. Only disappointment is that doors do not feel solid when closing and vanity mirrors lack illumination. For over 40000 does it cost that much to add a light to the vanity mirror?
Nice review. I really liked the look of the 1 series which this model basically replaced. But I think my 228i makes for a better daily driver with still plenty of performance.
Thank you, very thoughtful job. The only downside I see, is this is more an infomercial than a review in that we did not hear any cons, just pros. And any/all cars have some cons, even if minor. Also, nothing on mileage, and predicted reliability. We all know parts and service for any BMW can be very high, so not needing a lot of repairs is a key consideration for most of us. Just the same, very dignified run down of the car, really enjoyed it, and you.
I've got a 14 228i M Sport manual in the same color with black interior. It's my fun weekend car and love driving it. I took a friend of mine who owns a modified Corvette...he said the BMW pulls just as hard as his car and may be faster to 60 than his.
I have to admit after many years owning and driving probably 50 different cars of all price ranges expensive and cheap the 220i I rented was probably the best car I’ve ever driven. I thought I was just saying that to myself until I saw your video. After renting it so many times I think I’m going to buy one next
Does anyone have some experience with F22 220d 2014.. im looking at one, with 170.000km, looks great but i would love to hear something from you guys. TIA
What a great review! i have watched so many reviews this week as we searched for our next car and none told the story of this car as you have. I'm used to BMW 3 size cars and I've been having a hard time thinking about getting something a little smaller, but i know i really should. i looked at the 1 Series, a nice enough car, a step too far for me. It didn't make sense to me that no one made a nice car to fit the Series 2 space. The Audi A3 is horrid, so dated, like something from the 90's. Mazda3 a maybe, or even the 6, but nahh. You have shown me what i wanted to believe. The 2 Series can be the midsize car while not making me feel cramped, missing features or, worst of all, slow! M Sport looks perfect. Thank you!
Yep... And I can’t wait for the 2021 2 series M245i to come out that’s the rumor it’s going to be called . They just released 3 days ago spy photos of it testing in Mexico City , if it looks good that will be my next car . 😊
I am contemplating buying a new 2021 230i with manual transmission. I drove the model with a automatic and loved it, but I just want a manual transmission. Problem is, I have never owned a BMW and hear that they are expensive to own and maintain.
i thought you were trying to sound like agent smith from the matrix with your intro quote and the glasses, the pronunciation in your voice kind of sounds like him too haha
@@marcomillo49 Do you get free maintenance for the first three years or so? And when that runs out, is this a car that I could fairly easily do my own oil changes or not? Just trying to get an idea of ownership cost after the initial purchase.
I love my 2017 230 xDrive. I live in Cleveland, so having AWD makes it a perfect year rounder. It's great in the city and even better on the highway (40mpg). I tracked it once and it by no means was the slowest car out there. Might give it a tune bc it's a little heavy, that other than that it is flawless imo
I think one of the biggest reasons that they put the manual in there is because of how bad the enthusiast crowd freaked out over them taking it out of the 3 series. Heresy!
Great video and very insightful stuff on a wonderful car. What year is this car? How many miles were on it when you got it? I did some research on it and you can get great buys for that same model that is just a few years old and that is under 30,000 miles.
had my f22 m235 for 4 years, dinan s3 package with numerous tunes... once it hit 45k, turbo issues. Was such a good car, 22 track days, as soon as I bought it off lease, it all went to shit. Spent 8k trying to chase down a gremlin, ultimately traded it in for a b58 x3 m40.
Great review and I agree with it fully. I have a 2018 230i Sport. Yours is an MSport. Which suspension do you have? MSport or Adaptive MSport (Track Handling Package)? Have you compared standard, MSport, and Adaptive MSport? I've only driven the standard suspension. Was wondering how stiff the others are? Standard handles great and is fairly comfortable too. Where I live, most of the 2 series are 228i/230i in Sport line. I occasionally see an MSport as well as M235i/M240i and M2, but most are 228i/230i Sport
My car has the Msport (non adaptive) suspension. It isn’t harsh, definitely softer than my Z4 was, which may be due to the run flats on the Z4 being very hard. I have not driven one with adaptive suspension so I can’t compare. The car handles well, I need to test it on track and see how urgent a set of coilovers will be.
@@BetweenTheWheels I have 18 inch run flat performance/summer tires on mine. My only complaint is road noise. Not sure if non-run flats would help with that but the roads are so horrific where I live and run flats are so helpful for me. With my last car, I was always having to call for roadside assistance due to a flat tire and my back problems prevent me from changing a tire on my own. At least with these run flats, I can still drive.
Have you tried out the previous generation E82 135i coupe ? If you can put the 2 series modern tech to one side and focus on the driving experience its amazing. Has so much feedback from the road surface and sharp throttle response. It rolls through corners and grips with very little understeer if you're on equal sized Michelins all round. Mine has a birds bmw LSD diff and suspension upgrade with 225 40 18s. Comfortable with great body control and so much extra traction from the magic Diff. The steering is very good perfectly medium weighted. I found the 2 series steering a bit too light for me and dead feedback. Nothing coming back to the driver about the road. Many people love all the 2 series Tech but I prefer a simple sat nav thats actually a good map and I hate stop start engine thing at the traffic lights. You may find this strange but I rejected the 240i because of the dead steering and too much technology overload. I want to drive the car myself without technology interfering thank you very much. All I can say is try out a 135i coupe one day. The young drivers of today don't know what they are missing out on.
Yes, I love the 1 series and I think, as you say, it’s a fantastic mix of size, straight ahead driving feel and eschews the glitzy tech. Sadly, they’ve been in such demand they’re were more expensive than my budget for a straight ahead track car and lacked some of the things I wanted in a daily.
Thanks for watching! I’m not very tied into any super secret knowledge but if you mean the new version of the F22 platform, there have been photos of ‘mules’ posted in the last couple of weeks. BMW must be in final testing for that car but I’d expect it to be a 2022.
Check out bmwusa.com (or the bmw site in your country). 2 series is the smallest in the range. 3 series used to be 2 and 4 door cars of various engine size and trim level and then 4 series became the 2 door 3 series. 2 series was supposed to be a 2 door but then added 4 door version…. 2 series comes in three flavors - 4 cylinder 228/230, 6 cylinder 235/240 and 6 cylinder M car - M2.
Thanks. Here in Hong Kong we only have the 220i or the 235i. We are missing the 228i sweet spot. Not sure if I could adequately use the full power of the 235i on our roads. The 180 HP in the 220i might be the better choice. Any thoughts, opinion or inputs?
Sorry to hear about the reduced choices for you. In America we often don’t get some of the variants that European markets do, so I feel your pain. I have been a six cylinder fan for all of my more powerful cars, including those from BMW with their fantastic power bands. That said, this car makes me appreciate the usable power of a torquey four cylinder. I don’t know the 220i but I’d say if it has decent torque, it may be the way to go. The reality is, none of us can use sub-five second 0-60 times on the open road.
@@BetweenTheWheels Thanks for the reply. I was hoping for a reply from one of your subscribers, so your reply is sincerely appreciated. I think I will go the 220i route. There is a stage 1 tune option that would up it to 245 bhp. That might be close to perfection for my use.
@@samz3295 I ended up with a M235i. LOVED IT! The 310 BHP was great fun. There are few roads to really enjoy it, but it is a great value fun car. Just in the process of replacing it. Was tempted by an early M2, but more likely going with a 2018 Golf R.
I had nothing but great experiences with that car. Solid and fun. If I was interested in tuning it, it would have done well under those conditions too. Ultimately my own lust for more sex appeal in a car drove me to my current ride (see below), or I’d still have the 2 series. Great car. Coming from a 1 series 120d coupe 2009 remapped 223bhp manual looking buying a 220i coupe auto 2 series 190bhp first auto do you think this is a smart move ?
Hi.. i am an owner of a 218i coupe 2018 and love it. i am very glad driving it. But now i saw the new 420i, and i cant make up my mind to change the 218 to 420i. would you give me some advice .... thanking you in advance ... G. A.
I think it comes down to whether a few inches of backseat room matter and, maybe more, the aesthetics of the longer wheelbase. I’m not really feeling the new 4 series as I think it’s understyled and rather bland. If you must upgrade, I’d look at the new 2 series coupe.
@@BetweenTheWheels thank you for your prompt reply. i looked at the new 2 as well. i didnt like the design and especially the backlights. i think mine looks better then the new 2. i am really in a state to change to 4 or stay with my own 218i, which looks beautiful and especially the mineral grey with beige seats.. i dont know if you saw it, on the 4 series they made this dravit grey colour which, on the sun when you look at it, it gets oily green colour .. i dont like it at all.. this is also something that keeps me back not going to the 420.
Fantastic. Zero issues. I do my own maintenance and I’m a bit over the top so, three oil changes in 7 thousand miles and track ready brake pads. If this was just a daily driver it would be even cheaper.
