Why The BMW 230i Surprised Me - Both Good, And Bad

In today's video we are looking at a BMW 230i. Once upon a time the 30i badged BMWs were the top of the non-M lineup, but now they're a far cry from what they were. Powered by a 2L turbo four instead of an NA straight six, can this 230i deliver the experience of my old 330i?

Had a 230i m-sport for 2 years, and I can't agree with your assessment. Perhaps it's the mismatched Bilsteins that are causing trouble, but my 230i was at its best on country roads, with enough steering feel, chassis feel and balance, without it being too twitchy or harsh. This was with Conti Sportcontacts. The twisty stuff was great, though the short wheel base made it a bit scary above 230+ KPH.

I drive an 2007 e92 330d, and I was never particularly impressed with its handling until I replaced all the suspension arms with decent units, new oem Sachs shock absorbers, eibach lowering springs, Michelin PS4s tyres and a Hunter alignment. Now, I’m actually impressed with its handling and I can’t wait to hopefully venture onto track later this year

Yep, I have one and I have to say, I bought it specifically for the fact it's underrated, it's a bit of a sleeper in many ways. I've had many a Leon Cupra and Civic Type R drivers look over at a set of lights after they've been left for dust with a kind of "what the hell is that??" kind of expression on their faces. Plus, it's less of a target for thieves than the M240i, it sort of lies under their radar.

Good review. I have one of these and never considered the handling as you showed. Mine does have all the Msport Extras. My biggest decision in buying one of these was cost. It was an excellent 2nd hand buy costing about 2/3 of a 235/240. It's fast in a straight line and can get down a road. Thanks and good job.

Great video - there should be a small switch on the side of the seat which tightens/loosens off the bolsters, used to look after a fleet of BMWs and my colleague was a very large fella, forever complaining then one day we figured it out. Always thought it's a feature which should be on all cars with any kind of sporty credentials.

On the subject of turbo replacements my mum recently bought a second hand, low mileage 2018 fabia, it was running fine but kept going into limp mode so I checked it over for any obvious troubles and couldn't find anything so assumed it was a sensor or something similar. It went back to the dealer she bought it from under warranty and when the car came back a few days later the bill of work , to my great surprise simply said "replaced turbo".

Another good video on the 2 series. If it’s like the 220i coupe I had for the day whilst my M2 OG was in for its MOT the steering is definitely too light and lacking feel (for what I’m used to). I heard changing the steering wheel fabric to a smaller amount of padding etc can help. These new 4 cylinder engines are good, they just naturally lose the drama / noise compared to the 6 cylinders. When Covid restrictions loosen your welcome to try out my M2 OG DCT on uk roads etc

Had Michelin PS4 non-run flat tyres on it for this review. Getting PS5 replacement front tyres fitted tomorrow. However to be fair it came from factory with Continental Sport Contact 5 SSR run flat tyres and these were fine on the road and the PS4 didn't feel like much of an upgrade. I did do a couple of track days with the Contis on and then some more with the PS4 and the difference was much more noticeable there.

I did get it checked by a normal garage however am getting a proper alignment check soon from a respected tuning specialist. Although can't adjust much without changing parts, I think just front and rear toe. As it's now got 75k on the clock this check will also hopefully pick up if anything is bent or out of place.

I have a 2018 230i with manual. Overall, great review and very accurate with the exception of one thing (which was not your fault). The modified shocks on the 230i you drove is likely what made the suspension feel much firmer, yet, the shocks will not really reduce body roll. I think this is why you found the suspension so contradicting in terms of being super firm, yet not sporty. On my 230i, the suspension is definitely not all that firm. It's firm enough to feel sporty, but it really does not beat you up over the bumps. While this means it may not be on par with something like an M car, it feels like a good balance of sportiness and comfort.

Know what you mean; some BMW models are terrible in finding dips and bumps to pull into or onto and you're forever correcting but over-correcting because of a) numb and b) way too light steering. BMW should add a few 'weighted steering' options so that we can finally go in a straighter line and feel that we're actually in control.

Most BMW steering racks have traditionally been less immediate around centre. I actually find my 235s better in that regard than my old E46. The only BMW I can think of that didn't have this characteristic is a E30 M30, which runs way more castor.
@veefource

I'd set out to buy one of these for the more nimble handling over the 240i & it really is quick enough to be fun. But the overly long gearing & especially the numb steering were a huge letdown after my E36 328is. That was when I realised BMW had lost the plot so bought an Audi S1 instead (same price like for like at the time). Cheers for the review though James, there are far too few on this car.

I also have a 2016 230i. Absolutely agree that the steering has no feel at all however the consistency of the power steering does make catching oversteer quite easy, if that’s any use. I had E92 325i on SE suspension , run flats and the car was tram-lining a lot. The road would dictate the course. Even with hydraulic steering, I had no confidence on tight B roads. Under heavy braking, it would move about. The grip was mighty on dry roads and fast corners. Never squalled or flicked the TC light on unless in wet. I think the problem with middle level cars is exactly what you described as ''the car being undecided on what it wants to be''. With BMW, the safest bet are their baby M cars , full M and 3.0 engine or higher in general. Anything below is just does nothing for the enthusiast and it's designed for rental and company car markets.

Finally an honest review about these. I just bought one and pretty much hate the thing. Keep trying to convince myself that it's good. there is absolutely no steering feel and the suspension feels like the body is held on by rubber-bands over the four corners. On the limit it's so distant, it's oddly frightening yet boring at the same time; It's not rewarding to get up it like BMWs of the past - it just doesn't respond the way it should and always leaves my disappointed. I think the steering feel is poor in terms of weighting and over assistance however once I gelled with the car I found the neutral chassis balance fantastic and also you do feel through the chassis (via the seat and your feet and very slightly through the hands) what each corner is doing and when it is approaching limits of tyre grip. More so at the rear though, I can feel oversteer slip angles before it happens but front end understeer can occur with less warning.

You managed to highlight in the first minute or so the problem I have with BMW sports seats. As someone who also carries a bit extra around the middle, BMW's idea that narrow squabs + deep bolsters = sporty does not make for a comfortable car and aggravates an already bad back. This seems to be an issue for all 1-4 series since the early noughties and even the F10 suffered too. As someone who was serial BMW buyer in the 90s / noughties, I'd love to return to the marque but until they make their sports seats with a little bit more thought for the more generously upholstered driver I'll be looking at other manufacturers. Audi, MB, Porsche, Volvo get it right, why can't BMW?

Definitely sounds like something is wrong with this particular car. Suspension and handling I would consider one of the 230i's strong points. Steering is light and precise, but the feeling is somewhat numb. The relatively short wheel base will easily exacerbate a steering/suspension issue.

Amazing... I took my gf's 2015 125i F20 M Sport out for a little blast last night between Ipswich and Hadleigh and came back with the EXACT same conclusion. Zero steering feel. Abysmal. I'm wondering if a little more camber and caster would improve it. Maybe a poly bush or two on the front arms. Other thing is that it's classic modern German suspension where it bounces off bumps, particularly at high speed - over damped. Apparently this is due to BMW using very little suspension travel before hitting a polyurethane-like bump-stop. I would think that is why the owner of the car you drove has changed to Bilstein shocks. Would be interesting for me/you to compare the two setups. Other things that struck me - gear mechanism is too long, could do with short shifter kit. Engine is way too quiet, can't hear what it's doing when driving enthusiastically. Needs freer flowing panel filter at least. (I drive a modified 350Z and a stock E90 325i so normally have glorious noises) Engine (N20 in this case) has oodles of torque but flattens off at 5k.

I didn’t realize this was the 4 cylinder until halfway through. Bmw can’t do much of anything right these days. Blows my mind how they went from a German version of the Honda’s heyday With bigger motors, etc. and eventually turns into a double German Volkswagen with little benefit. No "Garantie" in Germany, only "Gewährleistung". The difference does not translate to the English term warranty: - Garantie: the seller has to prove the fault did not exist at the time of purchase - which is virtually impossible. - Gewährleistung (two years are mandated by law for every purchase): the buyer has to prove the fault did exist at the time of purchase - utterly impossible.

Without the adaptive dampers it was always jittering about and just way too hard, and this is on a 5 series... Had a new G series 320i loan car recently that also had the adaptive dampers. Comfort mode was very hard and sport mode was an absolute joke.

But that's the way a BMW is supposed to be, it's the "ultimate driving machine" (TM). If you wanted a smooth ride why didn't you get the Luxury package instead of the M-Sport package? That's *what the luxury package is for*! People choosing the M-Sport package instead of the Luxury package and then complaining about the ride makes no sense. The pre-facelift F30 M-Sport setting were considered too floaty compared to the E90, so that's why BMW stiffened it up again for the G20 to put it back to how it's supposed to be. :)

I have a 2021 U.S. market 230i with 6 speed manual and Michellin PSS non-runflats. The car was a factory order ar the start of Covid and showed up with Continental performance runflats, i.e. not according to order spec, which the dealer immediately agreed to replace. I agree about the dead steering feel but not the ride and handling, at least not on U.S. roads. I ruined a base Cavalier hears ago by swapping out the shocks. The average owner is not going to improve the ride/handling compromise that BMW engineered into the car after spending many hours and much development money. Leave the thing alone.

The suspension I'm sure could be sorted but lifeless steering probably not!! Really should be excellent from the outset!! Also BMW's insistence now, to give a 230 badge only to find a 2.0 under the bonnet, it's like they are trying to make it sound better than it actually is!! Sadly you can’t fix them like the E series cars. No amount of money and mods really get any feel into the steering. As much as I wanted a 140/240 for the great engine and compact packaging, I could just never get past the poor chassis dynamics.
