The E46 M3 was so great that it never raced with it's original i6 engine. That was thrown out and replaced with the 4.0 V8 which was subsequently used in the E92 followed by the F82 generation. THE M3 of all times is undoubtably the one with the race winning V8 ... the E92 !!!

+Mango mangoson you can fix the engine issues (forever) is an afternoon with $400 of parts

+Mango mangoson BMW recalled the car in 2002 and fixed the rod bearing issue. 2003 and later had the properly manufactured bearings from new and did not need to be recalled. The reliability issues with the engine are the vanos bolts (bolts are fine, but need to be loctited and torqued to spec to not back out) and the vanos oil pump disk (holes are too big which causes a hammering effect-- a properly sized modified factory pump disk costs $150 post core return. Do those two fixes and the engine is bulletproof. I have 142,000 miles on mine, including >10,000 track miles, 10 winters, and multiple trips to above 8000rpm every day. It's a wonderful, wonderful engine.

Because they're cunts. The E46, E39 and E38s were perfect looking cars, that look should've been frozen and slightly modernised with each generation... like Porsche with its 911 or VW with its Golf.

+fahmi prewire Nice my friend had a e46 four door A/T great car to drive. The CSL is the best car I have ever driven. From the handling, acceleration to the SMG gearbox its a beast to drive. One of the best BMWs ever built!

What color is your CSL? We didn't get it here in the states so I am buying all the OEM CSL parts and changing them out with my E46 M3 parts. It's also my daily :)

Couldn't agree more! Love every part about it. Only thing I have ever changed is the down facing exhaust. Other than that it is perfection!
