This was so interesting because I felt exactly what he meant at 02:50 a short while ago (I’ll say 1.5 months ago) but man chess has really changed my life and I am having that mental shift now to where I see moves before they happen, my intuition is stronger, my emotions are more in check, my stamina is strong, my way of attacking is refined, my general approach has gotten better…chess is one beautiful game To think I use to think this game was impossible to understand

Wow this is a great RU-vid idea Gregory .. The idea has been discovered via MRI that the brain has two decision making systems . One is activated by stress and relies on neural pathways that are guided by chemical dumps of cortisol used to get us out of danger .The other is not affected by the chemical dump and has full access to all information. It takes more time at first to make a decision but as pattens of experience are repeated we can recall faster them faster in a concise concept that include several steps . I think we could use both systems based on repetitive experience called habits but it shows the cortisol blocks some pathways so the secret is to not be stressed or frightened

Completely correct on everything except - Their moves are fast due to time on their clock. In classical tournaments they'll have about an hour and a half or so on each clock and they always try to be economic about time spent on certain moves, taking a lot of time in critical situations and trying to have enough time reserved for a complex endgame. Simply, no matter how much you play this game will never be tic tac toe

I see the point being made here about how memorizing can allow automation to occur more efficiently. It makes me wonder though, if that develops beyond a certain point, then do opportunities for delight at surprising oneself with a new discovery grow less frequent?

But it does look like slow thinking is what really matters against similar or higher level opponents. At that point what determines your win is the capability to figure out more moves ahead of the opponent.

True, it all depends on the activity. For a timed test for example it’s better to utilize fast thinking and as minimal slow thinking as possible irrespective of the test’s complexity

Can you go more into MRI or brain scan studies on chess? I like to understand why chess is such a perfect game and that the brain cannot exceed its limitations into a different type of game? The more people try to explore outside its current parameters of chess only to find it to be an ineffective inefficient game... Resulting factor is none of those mutations stick.

Chess is all about intelligence ,strategy . I say huge element of memory as in working memory and long term memory ? You might say what ? Counter me on that When AlphaGo beat chrss Grand master do you think its b cauae of high intelligence. No computer knows all possible ways and it stores it on its memory .... Its not purely analytical

I hate speed chess because it’s not much thinking, just going fast, it’s better to sit down and think of you’re moves thinking of all the possibilities then using you’re analysis to play the game knowing what advantages you’re enemy has and what advantage you have and how to deflect you’re enemy attack

I did not understand 1 thing. Can someone please explain to me in very simple language: is moving slowly a good skill? It sounded like there was a contradiction. Once it sounded like a good thing, then it seemed at the end contradictory with the conclusion that it is a bad thing. The last sentence on the skill of moving slowly confused me. Thank you.

2nd comment: After playing Chess960, I realise how mentally unwell chess players become the more they play it. They know they will get the same ideal setup every game and they deny the fact that they will mess it up unless they memorise some other geek's ideas. In Chess960 there is nothing to deny. You know you are going to get a far from ideal start position and you know it is up to you to make the best of it and you know you will be playing moves nobody has tried before. Which is better for your mental health?

No u conquered what most die for. When playing chess. Most ppl live they whole life craving to beat the one who taught them or better experienced. Some die without ever having that chance the ones who do accomplish that is a joyful moment. Reason being u know that person/ have achieved the impossible. First time I beat my uncle who taught me I bragged on that shit for weeks. N my friends witnessed it. Haven't beat him since that was my only win. So I can't say I'm better than him. But my teacher was proud of me. Look at it in that way. Not better. Doesn't mean your teacher slack. He taught u well. Now the game is very interesting n beautiful. I can teach u how to move the piece but I can't teach u how to think. So lack of sleep, sleeping on your opponents wte the case maybe every dog has there day. No game the same n that's why it's beautiful n mind boggling once u learn the concept. I love the game I'm obsessed with it. Not trying to win or lose. More of let me see where the one I'm playing against is at up to my intelligence. Game of wits my friend

@@vanillapillow5380 it won't really make you think actively. It's a myth. I've played and studied chess for years. I know what I'm talking about. It's just a game that's full of memorisation of patterns, moves and positional ideas. You don't think. You don't think at all. You see a position and remember what you're supposed to do based on what you studied. To me , a person thinks when he is unfamiliar with something. A new chess player will think a lot. I don’t think the Queen’s Gambit is doing a very good thing by showing an unrealistic picture of chess. I think chess players and enthusiasts love to hop on the train and praise anything that romanticizes chess in any way because it validates their own spending of many hours on this game. I like to play chess online too, but it’s not a good thing for everybody. I think anybody who knows people who regularly play chess know that chess players are simply not very pleasant people. Either they don’t understand the social interactions or they argue about every random thing like contrarians who just like to argue. I also think chess players have problems with their psychiatric stability.
